Premiering tonight at the 2016 Los Angeles Film Festival is Darren Lynn Bousman’s Abattoir, a neo-noir-infused horror film that follows a reporter (Jessica Lowndes) investigating a mysterious man by the name of Jebediah Crone (Dayton Callie), who collects the rooms of violent crime scenes as part of his plan to build a home based entirely upon murder. Abattoir also co-stars Lin Shaye, Joe Anderson, J. Larose, and Michael Paré.
Daily Dead recently had the chance to speak with Bousman about his return to horror for his latest film, why he thrives on making “un-makeable” films, and the long journey of Abattoir from page to screen.
[Writer’s Note: Full disclosure, my significant other (and sometimes contributor to Daily Dead) edited Abattoir, so while we will not be reviewing it, we thought an interview with Bousman would be an appropriate way to give Daily Dead readers insights into the film.]
Let’s start at the beginning and talk about the evolution of Abattoir from the graphic novel to the feature film version. This has been a long time coming.

I can vividly remember the first time I binge-watched a TV show: Jean-Xavier de Lestrade's eight-hour crime documentary The Staircase, a rare splurge on a DVD boxed set, bought because it reminded me of the great southern gothic murder trials of my childhood, like the Haysom murder trial recently profiled in The New Yorker. I remember it so well because, shortly after starting it, my then-girlfriend and I got into one of the biggest fights of our then-new relationship. I don't remember what it was about. I do remember that we went on watching it almost straight through, anyway, and we've been pestering Serial and Making a Murderer fans about it ever since. (Reader, I married her.) We weren't alone in loving it. Created by the French filmmaker for Canal+ in 2004, The Staircase tells the story of Michael Peterson, a crime novelist who is arrested for the murder of...

How do you make a Making a Murderer? Well, for SundanceTV that means dusting off the one you already have. The network will be making its Peabody Award–winning docu-series The Staircase from 2005 available on its website and app beginning January 15, with the first two episodes free. (That's how they get you!) The eight-part series by Oscar winner Jean-Xavier de Lestrade details the case of novelist Michael Peterson, on trial for the murder of his wife, Kathleen, who was found dead at the bottom of the stairs in their North Carolina mansion in 2001. The ensuing trial involved sex, politics, and possibly another death in a complex series of plot twists and reversals. It was well reviewed when it came out, and has been called "the Serial before there was a Serial!" The original docu-series will be aired with de Lestrade's 2013 follow-up The Staircase: Last Chance, which documents...

Oscar-winning French director to revisit infamous case of Tennessee novelist accused of murdering wife.
French director Jean-Xavier de Lestrade is set to make a third instalment of his popular real-life crime thriller, The Staircase, revolving around Tennessee novelist Michael Peterson who was accused of murdering his wife in 2001.
Lestrade has followed the case since Peterson’s original trial in 2003 on charges of killing his wife Katherine, who was found in a pool of blood at the bottom of a staircase with injuries to her head.
That trial – at which Peterson was found guilty — was at the heart of Lestrade’s hit, 2004, HBO-backed miniseries The Staircase.
It is regarded as a seminal true-crime series and Sarah Koenig, creator of the hit podcast Serial, has cited it as one of her inspirations for her own episodic, murder-mystery investigation.

Well, that was a very busy episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. There’s a lot here to unpack, not the least of which is the tendrils between S.H.I.E.L.D. and the other big happening in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. What was that called again? Oh yeah, Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The show did not disappoint in terms of leaving breadcrumbs for this Friday’s big release (and yes, I know Avengers has already come out overseas so don’t bother pointing that out), but for the purposes of this review, let’s just assume you haven’t seen Avengers yet.
Picking up on last week’s episode, Coulson has surrendered himself to Nu-s.H.I.E.L.D. with the intention of sidelining one adversary so that he can chase a bigger fish. He convinces Gonzales to allow him a mission to retrieve Mike Peterson and...

Marvel is planning a new TV series for ABC which will be penned by John Ridley. Ridley wrote the award winning 12 Years a Slave and Red Tails. Which project is he working on with Marvel?
Marvel has a lot of major movie plans for the next few years but they are also keeping themselves busy with small screen projects. Just recently, Marvel announced a spin-off to Agents of Shield, although they gave very little information on what it will be about or who will be in it. Now they have told Entertainment Weekly that they are working on a “mystery project” for ABC TV.

Agents of Shield, Season 2, Episode 16: “Afterlife”
Written by Craig Titley
Directed by Kevin Hooks
Airs Tuesdays at 9pm (Et) on ABC
After Bobbi and Gonzalez’s big hero moment and Skye’s escape in “One Door Closes”, “Afterlife” is set up to be a bit of a let-down, or at least a slowdown by comparison. There are plenty of good hero moments, like the return of Deathlok, and Fitz-Simmons pulling the wool over Bobbi’s eyes. Even with these moments, the episode’s focus on Skye slows everything down to introduce Afterlife and fit in lots of exposition from Lincoln, played by guest star Luke Mitchell (The Tomorrow People).
It is difficult to gauge Mitchell’s performance as Lincoln based only on “Afterlife”, because as Skye’s guide in this world, most of his dialogue is exposition. The large majority of his scenes with Skye are just Skye walking...

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. builds on an impressive turn last week with an episode full of superhuman snafus and double crossing…

It’s telling of how confident S.H.I.E.L.D. has become recently when you consider that we really enjoyed this week’s episode despite the fact that it didn’t actually achieve much beyond reshuffling the deck a little and re-establishing what some core characters are up to.

Mike Peterson made his surprise return in tonight's episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and as you can see, his costume has been improved a great deal since season one. Talking to IGN, J. August Richards had this to say about the circumstances surrounding the return of Deathlok. "Coulson has had Deathlok in his back pocket since we saw him last," he reveals. "So he pulls me out of hiding to help him out with this really huge mission that is vital to S.H.I.E.L.D. As you can see, I got a lot of upgrades while I’ve been gone. My costume is very different. There are things that are still the same. The character has been evolving since we’ve seen him last. This is like Deathlok 2.0." As for when and if we'll get to see a version of Deathlok much closer to the comic book version,...

J. August Richards has been one of the most judicially used tools in the "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." shed. The Joss Whedon veteran appeared in the show's pilot as newly enhanced struggling father Mike Peterson and then popped up periodically in the first season as the initially malevolent, but ultimately heroic Deathlok. Every time Richards returns to "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," it seems like Deathlok has been modified somewhat, either with an embellished suit or with an evolution in Mike's connection to his humanity. Richards' latest "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." appearance came on Tuesday's (April 7) episode and the actor just coincidentally happened to be on-set when a group of reporters descended on The Unmarked Marvel Black Site where the ABC series is shot. "They keep me in the dark as much as you guys," Richards joked about his return and yet another new costume for Deathlok. "I have so many cool abilities,...

Did Michael Peterson fake the accidental death of his wife Kathleen, whose body was found in a pool of blood on the stairway of their North Carolina home? It's more complicated than that. That's the central question that drives "The Staircase," a Peabody Award-winning, eight-part examination of Peterson's high profile 2001 murder trial directed by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, who won a 2002 Oscar for criminal justice doc "Murder on a Sunday Morning." "The Staircase" premiered on French television in 2004 to raves before hitting the Sundance Channel. Village Voice called it "a remarkable eight-part documentary that offers an intimate, vérité glimpse of a very sensationalistic trial"; The New York Times wrote that it's "so brilliantly conceived, reported, filmed and paced that you may come to wish it were twice as long." Every time a new cast member signs up to Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D, fans speculate on whether they'll turn out to be a character we know from the Marvel Comics universe or not. You can't really blame them; after all Mike Peterson became Deathlok, "the Doctor" became Mister Hyde, and Skye turned out to be his daughter, Quake -- and that may just be the tip of the iceberg. We recently found out that fan-favourite actor Edward James Olmos (Battlestar Galactica, Blade Runner, Dexter) is the latest addition to the cast, playing someone named Robert Gonzalez. Will he turn out to be an established Marvel character? Olmos didn't comment on that during his interview with Cbr but he definitely suggested there's a lot more to this mysterious fellow than we're currently aware. While Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is still months away from its already highly anticipated mid-season premiere in March of 2015, it’s not stopping us from reporting all the latest news we can get about the show while we wait. Today we may have something very exciting to look forward to. One of the characters that had a large presence last season and had a huge fan following was the character of Mike Peterson a.k.a. Deathlok, played by the marvelously talented J. August Richards who is most-known for his role Gunn Charles on the Joss Whedon drama Angel, the spin-off show of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The last time we saw him on the show was in the season one finale, where he told Skye (now also known as Daisy) that he had to go into hiding after he was controlled by John Garrett (Bill Paxton) and Hydra.

(Cbr) Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for the freshly aired "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." first season finale, "Beginning of the End," and the show up to this point as a whole. "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." has reached the finish line for its first season -- and, following last week's renewal news, it's more like a victory lap. Not that Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg's) team look entirely like winners at the outcome of the season finale, "Beginning of the End." Are you recovered, agents? Have you had enough time to get some theories together? Are you asking yourself how the heck you’re going to wait until fall? After last week's corker of an episode, Marvel's Agents Of Shield keeps the standard high. Here's James' review...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
1.21 Ragtag
After last week's episode, guest-starring Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill (which, though I was unable to review it, I absolutely loved), this week's episode of Agents of Shield had a high standard to live up to. It's quite surprising that even after what was probably the series' best instalment, it managed to keep the standard high.
In the past I've criticised Shield for acting less like a spy organisation and more like a bunch of government auditors. Well, this episode did something about that. With a collection of Bond-esque gadgets and agents assuming cover identities, things finally have some of the glamour of post-war espionage that has always accompanied Shield in the comics. Why it couldn't have been like this from the start, I'll never know,...

Coulson and his team infiltrate Cybertek in an effort to stop Garrett, but their enemy remains one step ahead of them.
Previously on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Grant Ward turned out to be a sociopathic murderer who went and killed a number of agents. And then he kidnapped Skye in an effort to get information his mentor, John Garrett, desperately wanted. She gave up the information, but only after Deathlok threatened to kill Ward if she didn’t. And S.H.I.E.L.D. lies in ruins and Phil Coulson and his teams struggle on in the aftermath.
This episode kicks off with a flashback to fifteen years ago. Ward was in juvenile detention for setting his house on fire. Garrett finds him and offers him a choice between a really tough life and jail and he doesn’t give Ward really any time to think about it.

Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) makes a guest appearance in this week’s “Agents of Shield,” which picks up where last week’s ep left off — Coulson and crew back at Nick Fury’s secret base, but finds the Bus gone, Patton Oswalt’s agent garrotted, and the traitorous Agent Ward having absconded with everyone’s favorite hacker Skye. Before Coulson can go after his agents, though, the U.S. Army shows up at the base — led by Maria Hill (at the urging of Melinda May, who you may recall was looking for Hill at the epilogue of last week’s ep). Time for a talk! Ward, if you’ll remember, is trying to hoodwink Skye into decrypting a hard drive that contains goodies Garrett, Ward’s mentor and current Hydra tool, wants. She informs him that to do this they have to head off to that same Los Angeles diner...

When J. August Richards appeared in the pilot of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as Mike Peterson, a single dad harboring some pretty awesome powers, viewers hoped that his presence would translate to a lasting spot on the show’s guest star roster. And Richards himself hoped for the same.
“I didn’t even know if I was gonna come back at all,” the actor admits with a laugh. “Everything is top secret, as you know. I feel like sometimes I find things out at the same time the audience does. But I like it that way, because it forces me to be more honest.

In some ways, the journey of J. August Richards' Mike Peterson has been the journey of the first season of "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." In the pilot, Peterson was introduced as an ordinary father who got superpowers through the use of the Centipede Device. He just wanted to be a hero to his son, but instead he became a victim of the technology and he had to be secured by S.H.I.E.L.D. A bit later, he was recaptured and his technology was overhauled to make him the villainous Deathlok. With each passing appearance, we see less and less Mike Peterson and more and more Deathlok. Late last week, I got on the phone with Richards to talk about his character's evolution and how much humanity still remains in Deathlok. We talked about the balancing act of keeping just a touch...

(Cbr) Marvel's "The Art of Level 7" initiative for "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." continues this week, with Entertainment Weekly revealing a new piece for upcoming episode "Nothing Personal" by "Journey Into Mystery" cover artist Stephanie Hans that teases the return of J. August Richards as Mike Peterson/Deathlok and more developments on the Skye (Chloe Bennett) and Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) front. "I love that the silhouette of Skye and Ward is kind of really one person, because they’re both wearing black," executive producer Jeffrey Bell told Entertainment Weekly. "I love her Hydra hair, and then I love even that he’s in her shadow. And so from this, you don’t know whether she’s wounded him, whether she’s protecting him, whether he’s dying, or whether she broke his heart. I love that it’s all ambiguous in that way, and with Deathlok looming over but not looking directly at them.

To say that this week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. left our team in disarray would be an understatement. May has abandoned ship, literally, apparently on a mission to seek out Cobie Smulders’ Maria Hill (with a little help from her mom). Coulson, Trip, Fitz and Simmons have returned from a mission to find their plane gone. And Skye and Ward are currently on a mission of their own, one that involves Ward’s determination to crack that hard drive once and for all.

Agents of Shield, Season 1, Episode 16, “End of the Beginning”
Written by Paul Zbyszewski
Directed by Bobby Roth
Airs Tuesdays at 8pm Est on ABC
“The End of the Beginning” wastes no time with pleasantries but jumps right into action with Deathlok (J. August Richards) breaking into a Shield safehouse. He is nearly taken down by Agent Garrett (Bill Paxton) and Antoine (B.J. Together, Coulson hopes they can search through a list of potential suspects, people that Shield is aware of with Esp abilities, and find the Clairvoyant once and for all.

Previously on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.…well, it’s been awhile, mostly because ABC’s scheduling has been a little crazy. But starting tonight, we’re back with a handful of episodes all in a row, no breaks required. Rejoice!

So much for making it easy for new viewers to jump in. At this point, "Marvel's Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D." seems to be serialized in a major way, and if you haven't been watching from the start, things just aren't going to make as much sense to you. That's fine with me, but it seems like their plans for the show have changed fairly dramatically since it went on the air. Then again, maybe this has always been the plan. After all, this week's episode lands at the perfect moment before "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," and next week's episode looks like it's going to take the ideas from that film and run with them in a parallel way. This is the sort of thing I was hoping for when this show was originally announced, and this is the first moment they're really having to juggle everything at the same moment.

Marvel Studios and ABC have released a new poster for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. providing another look at the first appearance of Deathlok, played by J. August Richards, with the tagline “Deathlok vs. S.H.I.E.L.D.” and the hashtag #ItsAllConnected accompanying the image.

When promos began airing for Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., many of us began to wonder what character J. August Richards would be playing. Fans immediately began hoping that he would be Luke Cage, but during the pilot episode we learned that his name was actually Mike Peterson, who is in fact not a Marvel comics character.
Over the course of the season Peterson joined S.H.I.E.L.D., only to get blown up and discovered by Centipede agents, badly burned and missing his right leg. Then, Marvel officially announced that the character would be the show’s version of the fan-favorite cyborg known as Deathlok.
Deathlok’s inclusion in the show helped boost some of the popularity and buzz that’s been waning over the course of the season. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been heavily criticized for how little it incorporates characters from the comics, and Deathlok...

One of the ongoing mysteries of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the “real” identity of Skye, especially since being revealed as an 084 (object of unknown origin) in the twelfth episode – the first time the team have heard about an actual person being given that designation. This has led to the fans of the show speculating as to her origin and linking her to a variety of superheroes.
