Kenny G is trying something a little different with his latest album, Namaste, set for release next week from Concord Music Group. The smooth jazz/easy listening icon has collaborated with Indian santoor player Rahul Sharma in crafting seven tracks fusing traditional Indian folk and classical music with Kenny's smooth soprano sax stylings. The tracks -- which were originally released in India in 2011 -- have been remixed on the new album by Kid Tricky of the UK dance music group Bimbo Jones.
Kenny G, who had already been a fan of Sharma's work before he toured India in 2008, "bumped into [Sharma] just before getting on stage in Mumbai," the saxophonist told The Times of India. "We got chatting and decided to work on something together," he said.
The two reportedly emailed song files back and forth from opposite ends of the globe during their collaboration. "It wasn’t the usual formula of playing the melody,...

Week 4: Sometimes in Eurovision, producers and artists just struggle to come up with original ideas for songs. I mean the contest has been going on for 57 years now so it’s a little more difficult to think outside of the box these days. The solution: ‘Hmmm, why don’t we just nab some bits from songs that have already been chart hits? It’ll take less time (and money – we’re in debt remember), sound instantly familiar to everyone who’s heard the original and will definitely be better than that cack about pigeons we were composing before. Just give it to some young sexy people to sing, throw in some equally sexy dancers, add a gimmick – flames, snow, thunder, midgets dressed as sheep – and ta-dah! We’ve totally won this thing.’ The 2012 Eurovision Song Contest is rife with stolen musical identities so here are 5 cases of Pop Theft...

I’ve been a Hip Hop fan since the early 80s when the likes of Double D and Steinski were around. They pioneered the instrumental cut and paste Hip Hop style with the legendary ‘Lesson’ series of tracks. Years later these were carried on by DJ Shadow and Jurassic 5’s Cut Chemist. However, instrumental Hip Hop has always been the less limelight-hungry member of the Hip Hop family, being comfortable with allowing its Lyric filled brother to take all the attention. I’m not sure if this is because the A&Rs were unsure how to market it or if the whole sample copyright situation just made these songs economically unviable. Whatever the reason, instrumental Hip Hop became more left field and underground than its mainstream brother.
To a certain extent this is a good thing. However, what it does mean is that anyone attempting...

"Freaks and Geeks" is now airing on IFC, and we thought we'd take this opportunity to revisit the show that launched a thousand bromance movies. Every week, Matt Singer and Alison Willmore will be offering their thoughts on that night's episode.
Episode 5: Tests and Breasts
Directed by Ken Kwapis
Written by Bob Nickman
Originally aired November 6, 1999
"In movies like that, they sensationalize certain things. But in reality those things don't usually happen." -- Coach Fredericks
Matt: When Coach Fredericks (Thomas F. Wilson) says that line, he's calming Sam's fears about an alarming porno film. But he's also speaking to the "Freaks and Geeks" ethos of realism over sensationalism. Tonight's episode "Tests and Breasts," written by Bob Nickman and directed by Ken Kwapis, really embodies that style of storytelling. It's full of moments when the show could veer into melodrama or exaggeration but never does.
Take that storyline with Sam.

“I don’t get the song choices tonight. I really don’t.” – Ellen Degeneres Your Aunt Whittlz took her first steps into Idoldome Oh-Ten this afternoon with what could tentatively be termed optimism, PopWatchers. I have learned my lesson after yea these many years of writing blogs on this here website: You commenters can be tough, but you are never more cutting than when the author expresses a certain weary disdain for the subject at hand. New Season, New Attitude! was my Tlc-reality-show-style motto today, fueled by the gorgeous L.A. weather and a meeting we had with the...

With a new hybrid car and a new ad campaign, Volkswagen is gearing up to take over America. Can they get there from here?
Volkswagen is starting 2010 in the fast lane. Moments ago at the Detroit Auto Show, it announced a new concept car, a snappy looking coupe with a hybrid engine called the New Compact Coupe. It's a hybrid on many levels--the company describes it as positioned somewhere between the Scirocco, Europe's best selling sports car, and the Cc, which is available in the States. Let the gearhead boasting begin: The company says the car can get 45 mpg, with CO2 emissions of 98 g/km, and attain a top speed of 141 mph. (For those more interested in interior stylings, the car comes with light-colored "Berry White" leather. Insert "Love Unlimited" jokes here.)
What a difference a year makes.
Last year Volkswagen leapfrogged from the No. 3 spot in worldwide car sales to No.

The star of Stephen Poliakoff's forthcoming Glorious 39 on his neuroses, playing educated toffs and why he digs David Hare
"A machiavellian dandy . . . Pure coldheartedness . . . Fabulously insincere." As I read out reviews of an old Bill Nighy performance, the actor grimaces and drums his knuckles on the table. "If ever a face was made for villainy, it's Bill Nighy's," I continue. "Wow," he murmurs. "Nighy's decadently long jaw and narrow, sneaky eyes serve him well . . ." He snorts, amused. "Sneaky eyes! Long decadent jaw! My God. I didn't know I had a decadent jaw."
Perhaps it is how Glorious 39 unfolds around him that makes you never quite trust Nighy as Alexander Keyes, a devoted father and aristocratic Conservative MP in Stephen Poliakoff's sumptuous new thriller about appeasement, set on the eve of the second world war. But perhaps Nighy has a singular talent for projecting unreliability into charming characters.

An aquarium in London has reportedly been successful in its attempts to use the music of smooth soul legend Barry White to encourage its sharks to mate. Managers at the Sea Life London Aquarium claim that the tunes from the late head of the Love Unlimited Orchestra have had the desired effect on the previously loveshy male Zorro, Ananova reports. Deputy curator Jamie Oliver said: "We are absolutely delighted that Zorro is finally getting it together with his intended but the courtship rituals of the zebra shark can appear quite violent and some (more)...
