The Last Video Store, set to premiere this Friday at Fantastic Fest, pays tribute to the format wars and the video stores of yesteryear through a cursed VHS tape that unleashes terror. Bloody Disgusting has been provided with a clip that demonstrates a horrific fate far worse than late fees for store employees and patrons.
The feature debut of directing duo Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford is described as “Last Action Hero meets Evil Dead” as the VHS Necronomicon has the ability to bring any movie character to life in the real world. That pits the protagonists against a slew of B-movie villains, with the below clip giving a peek at some of the rules and horror.
The official synopsis: “In this love letter to the era of the video store, we follow Nyla who accidentally uncovers a ‘cursed’ VHS tape. A film holds the power to connect the real...

Disney’s sequel Hocus Pocus 2 was a massive hit for the Disney+ streaming service this Halloween season, setting streaming records and proving that the franchise is now more popular than ever before. Which begs the question. Will Hocus Pocus 3 soon be on the way?
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Hocus Pocus 2 producer Adam Shankman teases the potential for follow-up projects, which could center on the sequel’s new characters. Hocus Pocus 2 introduced Whitney Peak as Becca, Belissa Escobedo as Izzy, and Lilia Buckingham as Cassie, a new group of sisters who come together to vanquish the Sandersons.
It’s Becca who ultimately discovers she has her own bewitching powers.
Shankman tells THR, “[Director] Anne [Fletcher] I think handled [Becca’s character arc] really, really beautifully. We went back and forth on how that was going to work, if it was going to work, forever, and Anne was just like, ‘This...

Photo by Matt Kennedy. © 2022 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved. When Hocus Pocus was initially released in 1993, the film was poorly reviewed and received. But, in the decades since then, the film has evolved into a camp classic. As the film continued to get attention via airings, streaming, and home video sales, the decision was made to bring back the original film’s three stars — Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler, and Kathy Najimy — for a sequel. When the new movie’s director, Anne Fletcher, got to see the three stars in action on the set, she realized there was definitely a magical kind of synergy happening that made the trio so much more than the sum of its parts. I have been a fan of the Italian giallo subgenre for 30 years since my initiation into it was precipitated by my first viewing of Creepers (1985), the severely cut version of Dario Argento’s Phenomena, my personal favorite film of his. Subsequent viewings of films by both Mr. Argento and his mentor, Mario Bava, as well as Lucio Fulci, Lamberto Bava, Luigi Cozzi, and Michele Soavi solidified a love for the putrid and the fantastic, and anyone who has seen these movies knows how delightfully entertaining they are: off-kilter camera angles, ludicrous dialogue, and what writer Todd French referred to as “a maddening narrative looseness” are present in these films in a way that they are absent in other genres. There is just nothing like an Italian giallo film. With all of the mock horror films that have been made going back to 1981’s Student Bodies and the later,...

Over the past few years, we’ve seen a number of homages to the giallo genre including Peter Strickland’s clever, slightly bizarre and altogether mesmerizing thriller Berberian Sound Studio, as well as Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy’s The Editor and the gorgeous, sometimes clever, and visceral Amer from directors Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani. If you know and love giallo you will love the first poster they’ve released to promote the film. Enjoy!

Now, this giallo-inspired thriller is coming to several Canadian theatres, on Sept. 18th. This release will be followed up by another as The Editor releases on home entertainment formats, Oct. 6th. The film is a send-up starring Paz de la Huerta (Boardwalk Empire), Samantha Hill (Bad Meat), Laurence R. Harvey (The ABCs of Death 2), Adam Brooks (Manborg), Matthew Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Tristan Risk and Udo Kier. Hopefully, actress Paz's appearance in this film has not ruined her career, forever. And now, fans can preview the film's horrifying launch here. The story follows an almost out-of-work editor. It is suspected that his desperation has led to murder. But, only Rey (Adam Brooks) believes in his innocence. Now, Rey must prove to others that he is not behind a series of murders,...

Recent films like Berberian Sound Studio and The Strange Color Of Your Body's Tears have paid homage to giallo and the '70s Italian horror genre, in a way creating a modern resurgence. Now the Canadian collective known as Astron-6 have thrown their hat in the ring with a satiric approach. Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy lovingly pay tribute to the genre and cleverly poke fun at everything from Suspiria and The Beyond to the more obscure films from that era. There's great attention to detail in everything from the production design and lighting, to the overdubbed dialogue and eerie synth score, and they even got Claudio Simonetti from Goblin to contribute to the main theme.
Adam Brooks instills great comedic sensibility into his character, Rey Ciso. Once the greatest editor in the world until horrific circumstances left him with wooden fingers on his right hand, Rey now finds himself cutting sleazy bottom-of-the-barrel slasher pictures.

Set in an Italian movie studio plagued by death, the film’s deceptively simple plot involves Rey Ciso (co-director Adam Brooks), a once prominent film editor who accidentally chopped off four of his fingers and is now forced to edit with one hand. Here are two films from the Chicago International Film Festival that couldn’t be more different.
First up I was Miss Julie, based on the play of the same title by August Strindber, directed by Liv Ullmann and stars Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, and a pug. The general plot is simple, but the drama and themes, are rich and complex as it focuses on a single night where the daughter of a wealthy aristocrat seduces on of her servants. I’m not just saying this because of Ullmann’s legendary collaborations, but the film really does feel like a modern Ingmar Bergman film, particularly Through a Glass Darkly and Cries and Whispers. It is a highly emotional film about the dichotomy between sex and love and the pressures of class based societies. It is also an excellent actor’s showcase, with three powerful performances.

The FrightFest All-Nighter 14 returns to its spiritual home, The Prince Charles Cinema, on Saturday October 25th, with five killer titles, including the world premiere of Anthony Diblasi’s Last Shift.
The evening kicks off with a special preview of The Vicious Brothers Extraterrestrial, a fine blend of Close Encounters and Communion with “some of the most extraordinary special effects and camerawork you’ll see in 2015″. Next up, The ABC’s of Death 2 needs no introduction. The first was a huge draw at FrightFest Glasgow and now attendees can scream along to 26 more deaths by 26 handpicked filmmakers. This is followed by the world premiere of Anthony Diblasi’s demonic horror Last Shift, which had to be dropped from the August line-up because of altered release and completion dates as did the next film – the highly anticipated sequel The Pact II, which has its UK premiere. And Giallo fans will not want...

Over the last few years Astron-6 have emerged as a powerhouse in trashy genre cinema of the best kind, the kind of genre fare that you remember fondly from the old direct to VHS days or badly scrambled on late night TV channels you shouldn't be watching. Their latest achievement is a ridiculous and entertaining bit of giallo inspired goodness known as The Editor.
Written and directed by Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy, Brooks also stars as Rey Ciso, a once great film editor who has lost his mojo along with most of the fingers in one hand. Now relegated to cutting schlocky Italian movies for a hard ass, he spends much of his time remembering the old days, being chided or ignored by his once famous actress of a wife and day dreaming about his hot assistant. Horror has seen its fair share of parodies, but none have gone so deep and played to such a specific audience as The Editor. A consistently funny film from its blood-soaked opening to its bizarre end, the film is definitely guided by horror fans - in this case Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy (two parts of the filmmaking collective known as Astron-6) - and is for horror fans, particularly those who love the vivid, sometimes surreal world, of Italian giallo cinema. Concurrently, The Editor simply a good giallo throwback, hitting all of the right beats where so many have contemporary attempts have failed.

Rey Ciso (Adam Brooks) was once the most celebrated film editor in the world, but ever since a lapse in judgement while working on the longest film ever made left him four fingers short he’s been relegated to cutting trashy genre movies for no-talent hacks. When cast members on his latest project start turning up dead the cop investigating the crimes, Det. Peter Porfiry (Matthew Kennedy), immediately sets his sights on Rey forcing the editor into a race against time to identify the real culprit before it’s too late. His efforts are complicated by several factors including the possibility that he may be the murderer after all. The list of suspects is as long as Dario Argento’s Giallo is terrible and includes Rey’s wife Josephine (Paz de la Huerta), an actor named Cal (Conor Sweeney) who’s benefiting from the newly available roles, Rey’s eager new assistant (Samantha Hill) and the head...

The directors of The Editor, Adam Brooks and Matthew Kennedy, along with the rest of their cohorts from VHS-obsessed Winnipeg film collective Astron-6, must have been mighty pissed when they caught wind of Berberian Sound Studio. Peter Strickland's 2012 film was a comic meditation on 1970s Italian Giallos featuring a fragile British film editor trying to finish a film in Italy while he slowly loses his mind due to the culture shock and vulgar cinema imagery. The Editor, operating from a similar premise, features a suicidal film editor equally out of sync with the studio he works with, losing his mind due to everyone being murdered around him. This kind of coincidence, where two features of similar ideas go into development at the same time, happen frequently...

With the recent Berberian Sound Studio and now The Editor, we’re in a bit of a giallo revival.
