"The Strangled Heart" episode of The Magicians is intense and filled with intrigue, setting up dark conflicts that put the characters' lives and sanity at stake. Penny is stabbed and cursed with black vines growing throughout his body, prompting Quentin and Alice to find a solution by burning his most prized possession. Mike gets possessed by the powerful magician known as the Beast, leading to a dramatic confrontation and the revelation that no one is safe from the Beast's threat.
The Magicians' "The Strangled Heart" was the eighth episode of the Syfy fantasy series' first season, and while it set up intrigue for what would come next, it was also an intense episode in its own right. Based on Lev Grossman's 2009 novel of the same name, The Magicians follows a Brakebills University for Magical Pedagogy student named Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) who trains to become a magician in a...

Exclusive: Jade Tailor, best known for her role as Kady on the Syfy series, The Magicians, is attached to write and direct a film adaptation of the bestselling novel, Twisted Crow: A Tale of A Broken Kingdom by El Dubois.
The novel is an intimate tale of domestic violence, in which Dubois chronicles her true story of survival at the hand of a sociopath and narcissist. It’s been a difficult week for Batwoman, with Ruby Rose surprising us by exiting the role of Kate Kane after just one season. While there have been several reasons floated as to why Rose quit the job, there’s been no shortage of actresses expressing interest in taking over the character. So far, notable names being rumored for joining Batwoman include Stephanie Beatriz, Alaina Huffman and Wallis Day. The latest actress to put herself forward though is Jade Tailor, who is perhaps best known for The Magicians.
Recently, Tailor put together her credentials on Twitter, including her fighting skills and experience with the demands of a television schedule on five seasons of The Magicians. The actress had this to say about why she should be considered for playing Kate Kane:
“Soo… since #rubyrose is no longer playing #Batwoman on #BatwomanCW I think they should cast someone with fighting skills...

This The Magicians review contains spoilers.
The Magicians Season 5 Episode 12
The Magicians should be applauded for its commitment to including a musical episode each season, and the fact that “The Balls” comes just before the end of the series makes this one particularly poignant. In that sense, centering the songs around emotions, bottled or otherwise, was an appropriate choice. However, combining the musical elements with a heist, another tried and true narrative in this show, may have had a diluting effect on both fan favorite formats rather than doubling the enhancement. Nevertheless, with the world seed in hand (or in… you know), the finale is bound to be legitimately world changing.
The setup for the heist was, as usual, a high point of the episode. The Magicians is good at making sure everyone has something to contribute. Here, for example, we had Marina describing her failed attempt at stealing the...

The Magicians has been a force of nature from the very start, growing a loyal audience and weaving a tale that bridged our world with the storybook land of Fillory and has become more and more complex ever since. Given its massive appeal, including our glowing reviews over the years, the anticipation was high for the return of season 5, which turned out to be the show’s final season.
The logline for The Magicians season 5 spoke of plenty of magical mayhem that was in store:
Last season, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: the life of Quentin Coldwater, who died heroically to save his friends— and the world. Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him. Now, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way and there’s too damn much of it,...

One day before I got on the phone to interview actress Jade Tailor, her show was cancelled. The Syfy series The Magicians is currently in the midst of its fifth season, having successfully remained fresh and invigorating for five straight years despite blowing past its source material and, at the end of Season 4, losing its lead actor. Despite all this, and despite the fans’ knowledge that these writers could easily have kept this show interesting for years to come, Syfy decided to pull the plug. As a result, The Magicians will come to a somewhat abrupt end as its …...

The chances of a sixth season renewal have disappeared for The Magicians. Syfy has revealed that the current fifth season will also be the show's last.

The series follows a group of friends as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures who threaten to destroy the magical world they’ve come to know. The Magicians is shaking things up for its fifth season. Following the death of Quentin (Jason Ralph) in the season four finale, the remaining characters will face brand new challenges as they cope with the loss of their dear friend and deal with the repercussions of having magic back. While many fans were upset with how the series handled Quentin's shocking death last season, Jade Tailor, who plays Kady on the series, told Popsugar that the show will continue to explore the grief the characters are facing in coming episodes.
"We all deal with grieving differently and you really see each character deal with [Quentin's] loss in a different way," Tailor said. "The dynamic [of the show] absolutely shifts because of that. You see some people really distraught and then others taking that pain and utilizing it for good. You really see the characters shift and grow in different ways that you might not expect.

Syfy on Monday revealed that the fifth season of its hit drama series would hit the air January 15 at 10/9c.
The network also dropped a new trailer that teases some spooky happenings. That's just par for the course with this series!
Based on the best-selling novels by Lev Grossman, The Magicians centers on a group of friends as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures who threaten to destroy the magical world they've come to know.
Last season, magic was saved, but at a terrible cost: the life of Quentin Coldwater, who died heroically to save his friends - and the world.
Julia, Alice, Eliot, Margo, Penny and their friends (and frenemies) must learn to navigate a world without him.
Now, a new threat has arisen: in freeing magic, the balance tipped the other way...

This post contains spoilers for tonight’s episode of The Magicians, and for the third season to date.
“When you file people away as sidekicks, you don’t realize their importance to the story. And this story belongs to a lot more people than you think,” Penny declares late in “The Side Effect,” the midway point of The Magicians Season Four.

The Magicians Season 4 Episode 7
The Magicians is making us eat our words as it answers the exact question we were critically posing last week: “Where the heck is Kady?” In a wonderfully meta homage to minor characters, Penny 40 makes his return with an exploration of what’s really important in the story of season 4, and although we don’t really get a full picture of how Kady’s revolution, Fen’s prophecies, and Zelda’s misgivings about the Order relate to each other, the seeds have now been planted, and we’re dying to know how it turns out. Since we’re now in the back half of the season, there’s a greater expectation for resolution to the problem of the...

Syfy’s adaptation of Lev Grossman’s “The Magicians” fantasy novels finally goes off-book for a wholly original story in its fourth season, and the result is just as spellbinding as ever. That’s not entirely surprising since co-showrunners Sera Gamble and John McNamara had already demonstrated their ability to play fast and loose with the source material, yet stay true to its magical spirit. Despite exhausting all of Grossman’s major plots, the new adventure continues the show’s inspired storytelling, which is both a vindication and relief for longtime fans.
Season 4 picks up directly after the cliffhanger, in which the quest to restore magic has been successful, but it’s now strictly rationed between the Neitherworld librarians. Also, Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy) has successfully saved the lives of his erstwhile Brakebills magic students with a spell that acts as a witness protection program. Worthy’s dog Buddy, a burly chocolate lab, trails behind, leisurely wagging his tail and making new friends along the way. Syfy has renewed “The Magicians” for a fifth season just ahead of the fourth season premiere. The show has also promoted Henry Alonso Myers to co-showrunner for the fifth season.
“‘The Magicians’ raised the bar at Syfy and has gained momentum season after season, attracting a new audience to the channel. We are proud of this series as it continues to break the boundaries of storytelling,” said Bill McGoldrick, president of scripted content at NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment.
Based on Lev Grossman’s bestselling novels of the same name, “The Magicians” centers on a group of 20-somethings from Brakebills University as they discover their magical abilities and ward off evil creatures. SyFy’s The Magicians has conjured its official season four trailer, showcasing the core group’s struggle to remember their identities and rediscover each other. The new episodes start on Jan. 23 at 9 Pm Et/8 Central.
Last season, the core group embarked on the epic quest of the seven keys to restore magic after it was turned off. In the finale, just as our magicians finally restored magic by unlocking the fountain at the other end of the Wellspring, the Library, Irene McAllistair and Dean Fogg swooped in to reroute magic to them.
In exchange, Dean Fogg negotiated the lives of his students, erasing their memories and giving each – except Alice who is now imprisoned by the Library – a new, magic-free identity. Even with their new identities, our core group is far from safe. Inside Castle Blackspire an ancient, powerful and unkillable Monster escaped confinement and jumped bodies to a new host, Eliot.

The pharmaceutical drug epidemic in America is a very serious issue. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse opioid crisis kills 115 people a day from overdose. The opioid crisis has also been a hot topic in the news as of late. The film Altered Perception attempts to use the topic as the focal point of storyline. Not only is the subject a hard pill to swallow, but so is the film.
In Altered Perception the government attempts to produce a designer drug aimed at correcting the false perceptions that people develop during trauma and the stress, the implications are deadly. Advertised as a cure for sociopolitical tensions, four couples volunteer, but end up with much more than they bargain for as their past and present are examined while taking variations of the new drug. However, this causes them to doubt their own memory, perceptions – and even their own sanity.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “The Magicians” Season 3 finale, “Will You Play With Me?”]
While the season-long quest for all of the Seven Keys is technically over, the ordeal for Brakebill’s erstwhile students is not. In the Season 3 finale of “The Magicians,” Quentin (Jason Ralph) and his friends were just about to succeed in restoring magic to the world when the faction representing the Librarian (Mageina Tovah) activated the fairy-powered Syphon device and diverted the magic to the Neitherworld Library.
Now, instead of having free-flowing magic, it’s so closely rationed that Brakebills instructors can barely perform simple demonstrations. Dean Fogg (Rick Worthy), who had betrayed Quentin & Co. to help the Librarians, is similarly frustrated with his limited access to magic. The timing couldn’t be worse because an all-powerful demon only known as the Monster or Thing has been unleashed upon the world with no one the wiser. The Monster is “something that simply wants…...

"Well, what if I told you I had a plan? It's the only thing powerful enough to stop what's coming." Magnet Releasing has debuted the first official trailer for a very weird, global-scale indie sci-fi film of sorts titled Higher Power, about a gamma ray that gives a human on Earth some crazy impressive superpowers. This is very hard to describe, you just have to dive into the footage. The official description is fairly vague as well, only explaining that "when the Universe decides what it wants, it's pointless to resist." You'll get a sense of this in the trailer. Starring Ron Eldard as Joe Steadman, who reminds me a lot of a young Jeff Daniels in Dumb & Dumber. The cast includes Jade Tailor, Austin Stowell, Jordan Hinson, Colm Feore, Tom Wright, and Laura Margolis. This actually looks pretty cool, and a bit weird. It's worth a watch, for sure.
