In Season 1 of quick and witty sitcom Mr. Mayor, the utterly charming Ted Danson was a clueless newly elected Los Angeles mayor. As Season 2 begins, his Neil Bremer is running full steam ahead with plans to improve his city. Series creators and longtime collaborators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock (30 Rock) spin this zeal into comedy gold as everything that can go wrong with each new proposal does. Witness farcically inept Jayden (Bobby Moynihan) in a pink open-air stretch limo trying to drive visiting mayors to an event — in L.A. traffic. Even Neil’s daughter stalls his momentum by pulling him away to the Dmv so she can get her permit. The new “I” Team initiative injects a fresh, energetic dynamic as they scrap with the current staff. These pretentious consultants offer suggestions like trash cans bearing the mayor’s face (garbage goes in Neil’s mouth). If government has to be a mess,...

At least Los Angeles’ fictional mayor is winning over the voters. Ted Danson’s political comedy “Mr. Mayor” has been renewed for a second season on NBC, it was announced Monday.
The premiere of “Mr. Mayor” in early January drew 6.6 million viewers, counting seven days of delayed viewing. It was enough to be NBC’s top comedy premiere on a Thursday since “Will & Grace” returned in 2017.
It finished its brief freshman season in late February by hitting a low for the series, however.

Ted Danson is getting another season in charge of Los Angeles after NBC renewed freshman comedy Mr. Mayor.
The comedy from Tina Fey and Robert Carlock was hit by the Covid-19 production shutdown last year and was only able to film nine of its 13-episode order. It premiered on January 7.
NBC touted the digital and catchup success of the pilot, which grew to a 3.7 in the 18-49 demo and 16M total viewers, adding that the half-hour show was its best Thursday comedy launch in total Live+7 day viewers since the premiere of the Will & Grace revival in 2017.
It marks the first comedy renewal of the season for NBC, which also premiered Young Rock and Kenan this year and comes as Superstore and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are coming to an end.

We've never wanted Ted Danson to be our dad more. In this exclusive clip from tonight, Jan. 21's all-new Mr. Mayor, Neil Bremer (Danson) attempts to connect with his daughter, Orly (Kyla Kenedy). How exactly? By using hip lingo. "So, what's gucci, fam?" Neil starts off in the clip. "Any Vsco girls stress you about cheddar?" Understandably, Orly finds herself confused by her father's line of questions. Thus, she offers up a quick, "No." In response to this, Neil states, "Perf." Orly urges her dad to not to use that word, but it seems Neil is committed to using Gen Z phrases. "Gfw, that feeling when these tacos squat," he adds....

To request every show feature Ted Danson getting outrageously stoned may be an unreasonable ask, but it would indisputably be for the betterment of TV. “Bored to Death” proved as much, building Danson’s series-long arc around his magazine editor’s penchant for good pot, and altered-state shenanigans served up intermittent joy in “The Good Place.” That Danson himself delights in the drug is nearly irrelevant; as fun as it is to share in the actor’s obvious glee over everyday minutiae and unjustified paranoia, the nuanced thespian still crafts each onscreen bake as carefully and methodically as an aspiring Star Baker. Every high is different, which makes each new performance an additive experience to his canon of cannabis, rather than merely a nostalgic reflection on past highlights.

Late last year, a potential heir to “30 Rock” debuted on a largely unheralded streaming service. “Saved by the Bell,” Peacock’s reboot of the 1989-93 teen staple, traded its forerunner’s clunkiness for a fleet and jazzy willingness to push past absurdity. From its breezy relationship with reality to its rich and deep bench of characters, it was no surprise that this series came from the mind of a key force behind “30 Rock” — Tracey Wigfield, who shared an Emmy win with Tina Fey for writing that series’s finale. Wigfield’s impish, hyperverbal humor both recalled her past creative home at its best and suggested that it might have a future.
The resounding creative success of “Bell” has one downside: It serves to emphasize that which does not work about “Mr. Mayor,” NBC’s new sitcom co-created by Fey and Robert Carlock. The two driving forces behind “30 Rock...

Despite their immediate on-screen chemistry as comic foils on the new NBC comedy “Mr. Mayor,” Ted Danson and Holly Hunter didn’t know each other prior to working on the show.
“I run in shallower circles then Holly,” Danson jokes. “At the Golden Globes, she’s sitting in the movie section I’m down in the TV section.”
In this bonus episode of the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Danson and Hunter talk about their starring roles in “Mr. Mayor,” including their give and take, learning how to perform the rapid-fire jokes that are the hallmark of a Tina Fey and Robert Carlock script. They also share what it’s like to work in quarantine, and Danson, who plays the mayor of Los Angeles in the series, reveals whether he has any political aspirations of his own. At the movies, January is the traditional dumping ground for box office bombs that the studios are eager to bury and forget. Unfortunately, NBC’s new sitcom Mr. Mayor — debuting this Thursday, Jan. 7 at 8/7c; I’ve seen the first two episodes — feels like the TV equivalent of that. It’s a real shame, because the combination of Ted Danson in a starring role and Tina Fey behind the scenes should be an easy slam dunk. But instead, the whole endeavor feels half-hearted and half-baked, with a thin concept and a glaring lack of laughs.
It explains a lot that...

Tina Fey has produced two series that have earned multiple SAG Award nominations — “30 Rock” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” — and she might just add a third at the 2021 awards. Her new NBC sitcom, “Mr. Mayor,” stars Ted Danson as a businessman running for mayor in Los Angeles, with Holly Hunter, Vella Lovell, Mike Cabellon, Kyla Kenedy and Bobby Moynihan filling out the cast. The show premieres January 7 on NBC and while most years it would be deemed ineligible for the upcoming SAG Awards, the circumstances of 2020 mean it will be on the ballot ahead of February’s nominations announcement.
If “Mr. Mayor” proves to be a breakout hit, it could be positioned very well at the exact moment the SAG nominating committee is voting. Such voters may be more likely to check out “Mr. Mayor” considering Fey’s pedigree, winning five SAG Awards for “30 Rock.” The show itself earned 22 SAG nominations in total,...

The bloodbath at ABC continues!
Comedies Speechless and Splitting Up Together are the latest cancellations at the Alphabet network, it has been announced.
Speechless lasted three seasons before the plug was pulled. Moving to a new night this season, it tumbled almost 60 percent in the demo.
In live + same day metrics, it is averaged 2.3 million viewers and a 0.5 rating. It did get a minor bump with delayed viewing factored in.
Related: The Cool Kids Canceled at Fox
It was ABC's least-watched scripted series, so the cancellation is not completely surprising. ABC did own the show, so many thought it stood a decent shot at being renewed.
However, it seems the network is going in a different direction.
Speechless starred Minnie Driver, John Ross Bowie, Cedric Yarbrough, Mason Cook, Micah Fowler, and Kyla Kenedy.
As for Splitting Up Together, the rom-com was not owned by ABC and was pulling in anemic ratings all season long.

Minnie Driver is speaking out about Speechless‘ cancellation, offering words of comfort — and encouragement — to the sitcom’s fans.
Shortly after news of the show’s axing broke on Friday, the ABC comedy’s leading lady issued a brief statement on Twitter. “Speechless has been cancelled and it feels rather sad,” she initially conceded, before adding, “However, I truly believe we have left this conversation about family, disability and love in a better place than we found it. I love all the people I worked with on it, and all of you who loved our show, too.”

ABC has silenced Speechless, canceling the comedy after three seasons, TVLine has confirmed. The short-lived series followed the everyday exploits of the Dimeo family — most notably J.J., a sharp-witted teenager living with cerebral palsy.
Speechless starred Minnie Driver as high-strung mom Maya, John Ross Bowie as fun-loving dad Jimmy Sr., Mason Cook as middle child Ray, Kyla Kenedy as prank-loving youngest child Dylan and, of course, Micah Fowler as J.J. The cast also included Cedric Yarbrough as J.J.’s “voice,” Kenneth Clements. [Update: Driver reacts to cancellation.]

“Speechless” has been canceled after three seasons at ABC.
The single-camera comedy centered on the middle class Dimeo family. Maya Dimeo (Minnie Driver) is a mother who will do anything for her children, especially eldest son Jj (Micah Fowler), who has cerebral palsy. Although she is attempting to get her own business of accessible clothing off the ground, she is also deeply focused on Jj’s future, as he graduated from high school in the third season finale and wants to pursue film school.
In addition to Driver and Fowler, “Speechless” starred Cedric Yarbrough, John Ross Bowie, Mason Cook and Kyla Kenedy. Scott Silveri created the series and served as showrunner; Jake Kasdan and Melvin Mar also executive produced. The series was produced by Twentieth Century Fox Television and ABC Studios.

The first episode of “Speechless” Season 2 starts with a flurry. Part of the action comes from the plot, as the Dimeo family wakens to the startling revelation that their house has been tented for fumigation.
