Exclusive: BBC News’ search for its first royal editor has been blown wide open after the British broadcaster passed over two leading internal candidates.
The BBC has advertised the royal editor post externally for the first time, just days after it was expected to be offered to either Mark Easton, BBC News’ home editor, or royal correspondent Daniela Relph.
The prestige on-air role is likely to attract interest from high-profile external candidates, with BBC sources already speculating that Roya Nikkhah, The Sunday Times royal editor and CBS News contributor, would be the candidate to beat, should she wish to apply.
There is anger, however, that Easton and Relph have been overlooked. “The whole thing stinks,” said an insider familiar with the process. A second person added: “Daniela and Mark are very very unhappy.”
Several sources said Easton, a vastly experienced BBC journalist, was asked to complete a written test as part of his application process,...

Exclusive: BBC News is close to crowning its first royal editor after narrowing the field of candidates down to a final two.
Deadline understands that the prestige on-air role is expected to be offered to either Mark Easton, BBC News’ home editor, or royal correspondent Daniela Relph.
The successful candidate will step into a newly-created role, but effectively replaces Nicholas Witchell, who retired as a BBC royal correspondent after 25 years.
Easton has little experience of covering the royal family, but has been home editor since 2004, overseeing major stories including the Grenfell Tower disaster.
Sources said Easton could bring a “more ballsy” approach to the BBC’s royal output, with the corporation sometimes seen as being cautious in its coverage of the royal family.
Relph has reported on the royals for more than a decade and appeared on the BBC’s News at Six bulletin on the day Kate Middleton announced her cancer diagnosis.

Stephen Colbert is not proud of some jokes he made about Kate Middleton’s whereabouts before her cancer diagnosis was revealed.

Stephen Colbert has acknowledged that his skit about Kate Middleton upset people in a downbeat monologue following the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis.
The Late Show host dedicated two minutes to Middleton on Monday’s episode, saying that jokes he made about Prince William having an affair did not go down well with some viewers.
“There’s a standard that I try to hold myself to, and that is I do not make light of somebody else’s tragedy,” Colbert said. “Far too many of us know that any cancer diagnosis of any kind is harrowing for the patient and for their family.”
He added: “Though I’m sure they don’t need it from me, I and everyone here at The Late Show, would like to extend our well wishes and heartfelt hope that her recovery is swift and thorough.”

Members of the royal family have experienced some trying times over the last couple of months. In January, the Palace announced that the Princess of Wales (formerly known as Kate Middleton) had abdominal surgery and needed a lengthy recovery. Then, on March 22, Kate shared that she had cancer. Weeks earlier, tests revealed that King Charles III had cancer and was receiving treatment as well.
With two working royals out of commission now, the family’s new slimmed-down monarchy has been put to the test as some senior members of the Firm are doing multiple engagements a day. However, one family member who isn’t the most recognizable attended an engagement that is very close to King Charles and Queen Camilla’s heart. That royal though showed “signs of nervousness” and seemed “unprepared” during the outing in London.

Kate Middleton has blamed her poor photo editing skills for the family photo Snafu that led multiple agencies to drop an image of her and family yesterday, sending the UK press into meltdown.
Prince William and wife Middleton’s Kensington Palace X account just posted a message from Middleton saying: “Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother’s Day. C.”
Four major news agencies — Associated Press, Getty Images, Reuters, and Afp — had pulled the photo from their libraries amid concerns it was manipulated by Kensington Palace.

It was meant to be a wholesome image to celebrate Mother’s Day in the UK, but a photo of Kate Middleton and her children has ended in controversy for the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Four major news agencies — Associated Press, Getty Images, Reuters, and Afp — have pulled the photo from their libraries amid concerns it was manipulated by Kensington Palace.
AP issued a “kill notification” for clients, telling those who use its service that on “closer inspection it appears that the source has manipulated the image.” Reuters said it was deleting the picture after a post-publication review.

While King Charles will be out of commission for a bit to receive treatment for an enlarged prostate, Queen Camilla (formerly known as Camilla Parker Bowles) has been busy carrying out her royal engagements and giving updates on how he’s feeling.
Buckingham Palace released a statement on Jan. 17, announcing that the king would be undergoing surgery soon for an enlarged prostate. It read: “In common with thousands of men each year, The King has sought treatment for an enlarged prostate. His Majesty’s condition is benign and he will attend hospital next week for a corrective procedure. The King’s public engagements will be postponed for a short period of recuperation.”
The following day, the monarch’s wife was asked about her husband during a visit to Scotland. She offered an update on the king’s health and revealed what he’s “looking forward to” after he has the procedure and leaves the hospital.

Exclusive: BBC News is gearing up to hire its first royal editor, with potential candidates emerging as the broadcaster looks to capitalize on soaring audience interest in the British monarchy.
BBC News has traditionally appointed royal correspondents, but the corporation has decided to elevate the role after Nicholas Witchell, a 25-year veteran of the beat, announced he will retire in 2024.
Insiders believe that it will be the first time in the corporation’s history it has installed a royal editor. Jean Seaton, the BBC’s official historian, was unaware of the broadcaster previously having the position.
Recruitment is expected to begin early next year, with the chosen candidate taking their place alongside household names including political editor Chris Mason and international editor Jeremy Bowen.
Speculation is already mounting over who may land the post, which will catapult a journalist into the heart of BBC coverage of key national moments including royal events and deaths.

U.K. media regulator Ofcom has confirmed it will not investigate comments made by “Bridgerton’s” Adjoa Andoh during the coronation of King Charles III last month.

Video footage of the incident shows the eggs whizzing by the King’s face and shoulder as he maintains his composure. The footage shows the eggs broken on the ground near his feet. It appears that both King Charles and Camilla remained unperturbed by the disruption.
Watch: Here is the moment eggs were thrown at King Charles by a protestor in York as he and the Queen Consort arrived in the city this morning.

King Charles III didn’t exactly receive a warm welcome on Wednesday when he and Queen Consort Camilla arrived in York, England, for an official visit.
The 73-year-old British monarch was greeting crowds at Micklegate Bar, a royal entrance to the city, when a lone protestor attempted to throw eggs at him, narrowly missing.
The moment was caught on camera and Charles is seen barely acknowledging the eggs, which landed on the ground next to him.
A man was detained by police following the incident, and in the video, crowds are heard booing the protestor.

David Beckham joined thousands of well-wishers queuing to say a final farewell to the Queen on Friday.
The soccer star told reporters and fans that he’d been in the line since around 2 a.m., and he was still there 12 hours later.
Like everyone else, Beckham waited hours and hours to pay his respects. He wore a dark flat cap, suit and tie for the occasion.
He looked emotional as he made his way to the Queen’s coffin at Westminster Hall.
Beckham told ITV that his grandparents would have been there in that line if they were alive today, so he was doing it on their behalf and that of his family.

Princes Harry and William have responded to the explosive findings of an independent inquiry into the BBC’s infamous 1995 Panorama interview with their mother, Princess Diana.
The investigation was centred on British journalist Martin Bashir and his use of forged bank documents to secure access to the princess in the now-iconic sit-down, in which Diana claimed there were “three of us in the marriage.” Bashir, who was serving as the corporation’s Religion Editor up until last week, abruptly stepped down from the corporation on May 14, citing poor health.
The findings of the investigation, carried out by retired judge Lord Dyson, revealed on Thursday that the BBC “fell short of the high standards of integrity and transparency which are its hallmark” and that the internal investigation at the time, led by former BBC director general Tony Hall, was “woefully ineffective.”

The death of a senior member of the royal family is always a huge event in British life, whatever your view on the monarchy. And nowhere is the significance of these moments perhaps better captured than on the BBC.
The public broadcaster has well-rehearsed procedures for reporting on royal deaths, and these protocols swung into action with the passing of Prince Philip. Just after midday on Friday, the BBC interrupted its usual output across TV and radio to bring audiences Buckingham Palace’s statement.
On BBC One, the UK’s most-watched television channel, an episode of daytime show Paramedics on Scene went dark. A black and white title card appeared on screen, with the words “News report.”
Presenter Martine Croxall then said: “We are interrupting our normal programs to bring you an important announcement. You’re watching BBC News from London. A short while ago, Buckingham Palace announced the death of His Royal Highness,...

In one week, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s nuclear CBS interview with Oprah Winfrey became a global television event that toppled incendiary presenter Piers Morgan from “Good Morning Britain” and now leaves a sizeable question mark over Sharon Osbourne’s future as a co-host at “The Talk.”
But it’s the war of words being played out across the Atlantic that has prompted extensive pearl-clutching from British royal watchers puzzled by U.S. outlets controlling the narrative about the British royal family.
In the latest jaw-dropping development, Gayle King, a co-host on “CBS This Morning” and Winfrey’s Bff, revealed on March 16 that Prince Harry has been in touch with his father, Prince Charles, and brother, Prince William.
“The word I was given was that those conversations were not productive,” King declared live on TV. “No one in the royal family has talked to Meghan yet.”

ITV chief executive Carolyn McCall has revealed that she completely believes Meghan Markle’s statements about her mental health, which is at odds with ITV presenter Piers Morgan’s views on the matter.
Outspoken presenter Morgan, co-host of ITV’s breakfast program “Good Morning Britain,” suggested that he did not believe Markle’s statements during the Monday edition of the show. During the interview, with Oprah Winfrey, Markle said she had felt suicidal at times while being a part of the Royal Family and didn’t receive the support she needed from them despite asking for it. “I don’t believe a word she says,” Morgan said on the show on Monday. “I wouldn’t believe her if she read me a weather report.”
Morgan stormed off set on Tuesday, while “Good Morning Britain” was being broadcast live, after an altercation with weatherman Alex Beresford, who called Morgan’s behaviour “diabolical.

Prince William and Kate Middleton visited the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre on Tuesday along with Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. Once they arrived, the four family members toured the facility and learned about the organization's efforts to help injured military personnel. At one point, the Duke of Cambridge played a little wheelchair basketball. After he missed a few shots, his father pushed him forward and gave him an encouraging squeeze on the shoulders. When Prince Harry took legal action against a number of UK tabloids recently, he claimed that these publications were guilty of bullying his wife Meghan Markle, stating that they had "vilified her almost daily," staging "a ruthless campaign that has escalated over the past year." He compared Meghan's treatment to that of his mother, Princess Diana, confessing that, "my fear is history repeating itself."
Now it turns out that Meghan's British friends saw this coming, and warned her a long time ago to seriously consider any kind of relationship with Harry. Talking to ITV's Tom Bradby during the documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, Meghan said, "When I first met my now husband, my friends were really happy because I was so happy, but my British friends said to me, 'I'm sure he's great, but you shouldn't do it because the British tabloids will destroy your life.'...

There were a lot of revelations in the ITV documentary Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, but one of the most surprising was Harry's frank comments about his sometimes strained relationship with his brother, Prince William. When questioned by Tom Bradby about his relationship with William, Harry laughed before confessing, "Part of this role and part of this job and this family being under the pressure that it's under, inevitably stuff happens."
However, he continued, "Look, we're brothers, we'll always be brothers. We're certainly on different paths at the moment but I will always be there for him as I know he'll always be there for me."

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are a huge talking point right now, having shared some of their deepest emotions in a new ITV documentary about their recent tour of Southern Africa. In Harry and Meghan: An African Journey, we learned more about the pressures they face as one of the most famous royal couples in the world, but we also saw the happiness and pride they take in each other; their son, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor; and their work for good causes. In fact, the documentary provided quite the insight into just how emotional the past year has been for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Those emotions became apparent in a series of candid interviews, which saw Harry and Meghan challenge the royal practice of keeping feelings behind palace doors. Both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke about the impact they feel from the constant...
