Questions about the role newly elected Teamsters president Sean O’Brien played in a thuggish 2014 labor dispute on the Boston set of Top Chef are still dogging him, resurfacing recently in the run-up to his election last week.
O’Brien, president of Boston’s Teamsters Local 25, steadfastly has maintained that he was not responsible for arranging the picketing of the show that led to five of his members being arrested and indicted for attempted extortion in a picket-line incident in which racist, homophobic and misogynistic taunts and threats of violence were hurled at members of the show’s cast and crew.
As first reported by Deadline, about a dozen members of Local 25 had set up a picket line on June 10, 2014, outside the Steel & Rye restaurant in the Boston suburb of Milton, where the show was filming after having been chased out of Boston by the Teamsters, who wanted the producers to...

Check out these 11 films from the 2000s that are better than their Rotten Tomatoes scores made them out to be.
“There is perhaps no decade in history with pop culture as trashy as the 2000s. The aughts were infamouslytrashy! Part of what contributed to that, aside from people ravenously consuming tabloids about heiresses and young starlets in outfits of questionable taste, was the lot of outrageous, cringe-worthy, and typically befallen to the category of good-bad-movie-that’s-fun-to-watch that came out at the time.”

A version of this story on the effects in “The Umbrella Academy” first appeared in the Comedy/Drama/Actors issue of TheWrap’s Emmy Magazine.
“We barely made it,” said visual effects supervisor Everett Burrell with a laugh, remembering the rush to finish postproduction on the first season of Netflix’s “The Umbrella Academy.” “Episode 10, especially, was huge. It had so much going on.”
For the unfamiliar, the 10th and final episode of the comic-book adaptation’s first season features one character ending a climactic battle by shooting a laser from her chest and destroying the moon, raining a spectacular apocalypse down on Earth in the process. But according to Burrell, showrunner Steve Blackman’s mandate for visual effects was consistent from the jump: Keep it simple. The goal was to rein in some of the more dramatic elements of the widely beloved source material and create the show’s own unique visual language.

One of Netflix and Ucp’s most dynamic 2019 series had a number of notable stars — but honestly, one of “The Umbrella Academy’s” most important figures was the hyper-intelligent Pogo, a CGI chimpanzee whose not-so-human status didn’t keep him from being a beloved figure.
“I love Pogo,” showrunner Steve Blackman told IndieWire. “He’s fabulous in so many different ways. It’s just a wonderful thing to think that a whole bunch of people brought this character to life, and people loved him. It’s just a great feeling.”
Pogo, a father figure to the super-powered children at the heart of the Netflix series, was a definite figure of sympathy. He was also, according to visual effects supervisor Everett Burrell, “a really scary point for production” — which was why, of all the production entities involved with the show, Weta Digital was brought on first.

TBS has opted not give a third-season renewal to its summer series People of Earth, the network’s supernatural-tinged comedy. Creator David Jenkins tipped the news last night on Twitter, and the move comes after the network had initially renewed it in the fall along with fellow summer series Wrecked and The Guest Book.
Jenkins told fans that Season 3 of the single-camera comedy, from Conan O’Brien’s Conaco and Warner Horizon Television, had already been written.
The series, executive produced by Greg Daniels and O’Brien, revolves around a group of alien abductees – or “experiencers” – living in the small town of Beacon, NY. The ensemble cast includes Nasim Pedrad, Michael Cassidy, Wyatt Cenac, Ana Gasteyer, Oscar Nuñez, Michael Cassidy, Alice Wetterlund, Luka Jones, Brian Huskey, Nancy Lenehan, Tracee Chimo, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Björn Gustafsson and Ken Hall.

Four episodes were provided prior to broadcast.
It doesn’t take long for TBS’s new half-hour sci-fi comedy/drama to get weird. In fact, it’s before the end of the show’s pilot, when one of its alien denizens – which might be a hallucination, or might be an actual reptilian invader bent on humanity’s destruction – appears out of nowhere in the car of series lead Ozzie (Wyatt Cenac) and asks, “don’t get weird, okay?”
That’s one of many played-straight oddities that nets People of Earth its biggest moments of high concept laughs, and more often than not (in the first four episodes made available for review, anyway), the show is far more hit than miss. There’s a straightforward slant to its story – bigwig New Yorker slums it in a small town and quickly becomes invested in its peculiarities – but what People of Earth succeeds...
