Exclusive: Kristin Scott Thomas and Lily James are joining forces to star in a scorching new play by Penelope Skinner, directed by Ian Rickson, that will open in London’s West End in the fall.
Pretty hot names to have atop a theater marquee, that’s for sure.
The drama, called Lyonesse, will open at the Harold Pinter Theatre in late September or early October. Official dates are being determined.
In this new work, Skinner — who won the George Devine Award for most promising playwright in 2011 for The Village Bike — focuses on Elaine (Scott Thomas), a reclusive and brilliant actress who disappeared from public view under mysterious circumstances.
Elaine summons Kate (James), a young film executive, to her remote Cornish estate to facilitate “her glorious comeback,” according to a production source who copped me a premise of the play.
“But who really controls the stories we tell and how we get to tell them?...

Actor James McAvoy will finally reprise his performance in the title role of director Jamie Lloyd’s Olivier Award-winning revival of Cyrano de Bergerac, with the pandemic-delayed staging at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York now set for April 5 to May 22, 2022.
The production, which won the Olivier for Best Play Revival for a 2019 staging at London’s Playhouse Theatre, was originally scheduled to play Bam in spring 2020 but was postponed due to the Covid shutdown.
In addition to Bam, the production’s 2022 engagements also include dates at London’s Harold Pinter Theatre (February 3-March 12) and the Theatre Royal Glasgow (March 18-26).
The new version of the Edmond Rostand classic was adapted by Martin Crimp and co-stars Evelyn Miller as Roxane.
“We’re so thrilled to welcome Jamie Lloyd, James McAvoy and this incredible company to Bam for a Cyrano like no other,” Bam Artistic Director David Binder said.

Mike Leigh has been nominated for seven Oscars and returns to Cannes this month with the biographical film "Mr. Turner," which chronicles the last quarter-century in the life of the famed 19th century painter J.M.W. Turner. Equally reviled and adored, Turner was the sort of electric historical figure that the industry has been gravitating towards, especially as many Americans are fully initiated Anglophiles. Writer-director Leigh, most recently having global success with "Another Year," made the film to showcase the polarizing aspects of the eccentric painter, played by Timothy Spall. The challenge of creating a film about an artist is that the product must do justice to the subject. In this clip, it is clear that Leigh had enough ambition in making "Mr. Turner" to match the artist's work. It showcases this ambition through extremely long takes and densely filled period sets. The cast also includes Richard Bremmer and...

James Corden, the affable, nimble and hilarious star of "One Man, Two Guvnors," reminds us that live theater is an adventure that happens but once.
The fast-paced British farce, which begins with a band, The Craze, warming up the audience, has him asking for help from the audience, clearly part of the play. He asked two men to carry a trunk that his character, Francis Henshall, couldn't and that led to a series of pratfalls. This went fine.
A little later, Henshall, perpetually starving and eating, is feeling a bit peckish. So he asks if anyone has a sandwich. The Music Box Theater, one of Broadway's old gems, is a place where carrying anything other than a purse in is considered gauche.
When he assures the audience he is serious, two men offer food.
"You do know this is the theater?" Henshall asks.
This leads to a few minutes of...
