The first responders of 911 will keep putting their lives on the line at ABC.
The network has renewed 911 for the 2024-25 season, which will mark its second on ABC and eighth overall. The series, from Disney’s 20th Television, Ryan Murphy Television and Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision, moved to ABC from Fox this season. The renewal comes as 911 is set to air its 100th episode this week.
The show was Fox’s top-rated drama for several seasons, and it’s picked up that mantle at ABC. Through its first three episodes of a strike-shortened seventh season, 911 is averaging 5.29 million same-day viewers (versus 4.7 million last season), and the March 14 season premiere more than doubled its initial audience with a week of streaming and other delayed viewing, going from 4.93 million to 11.76 million viewers. ABC also says that 911 is the network’s most watched current series across all platforms this season.

The first teaser trailer for 9-1-1 season seven has a real Titanic vibe. The 30-second video shows a ship in distress but doesn’t confirm that Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby (Peter Krause) are on board. However, given their history, there’s a 99.9% likelihood the twosome’s honeymoon plans will come to an abrupt – and watery – end.
At the end of season six, the couple decided to spend their honeymoon on a cruise without telling any of their friends. And so, of course, the new season will begin with a dramatic rescue at sea.
Season seven marks the show’s move from Fox to ABC. The new season kicks off on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 8pm Et/Pt.

The last-ever episode of “9-1-1” on Fox airs Monday, and it’s a bittersweet occasion for Oliver Stark, who has starred as Evan “Buck” Buckley on the Ryan Murphy-produced first-responder drama since its debut six seasons ago.
While the show is ending its run on one network, it will be alive and well next season on ABC — the broadcaster that is owned by Disney, the parent company of “9-1-1” studio 20th Television, which not too long ago was owned by Fox — so Stark isn’t saying goodbye to his character, so much as a family he and his co-stars have established behind-the-scenes.
Here, Stark discusses with Variety his reaction to the move to ABC for Season 7, and if he thinks spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” (which also hails from 20th Television) remaining at Fox for its fifth season means the chance at another crossover episode between the two series is slim.

In one of the biggest twists of the 2023 upfront, Fox opted not to renew its highest rated scripted series, 9-1-1. As Deadline reported first, the drama, produced by 20th Television, was instead picked up for a seventh season by 20th TV sibling ABC.
While the announcement came earlier this month, during Fox’s pre-upfront press call Monday morning, the network’s CEO Rob Wade revealed that the decision for 9-1-1‘s run to end with Season 6 was actually made a year ago by his predecessor, Charlie Collier, as part of the difficult, down-to-the-wire renewals of 9-1-1 and The Resident, which finally closed a couple of hours before the network’s upfront presentation.
“But needless to say, you look at shows in two different ways. It’s first and foremost from the creative lens and how much we love to create, and the second thing is really the economics of that,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Monday’s episode of Fox’s “9-1-1,” entitled “In Another Life.”
Well, “9-1-1” fans, you can stop holding your breath, because Evan “Buck” Buckley (Oliver Stark) came back to life following his literal shocking “death” from a lightening bolt strike during the March 6 episode. But before he returned to us, and the 118, Buck had to journey through a world created in his coma brain in which his older brother, Daniel (played by “Mad Men” alum Aaron Staton), had lived and Buck never became a firefighter.
During the episode, Buck has a very “It’s a Wonderful Life” experience in learning what the lives of Bobby (Peter Krause), Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Eddie (Ryan Guzman), Chimney (Kenneth Choi) and more of his friends and family would be like if that one thing had changed.

Spoiler alert: Evan Buckley is in big trouble.
At least that's how things are left as the end credits rolled during 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 10. Unresponsive and headed to the hospital, Buck was in dire straits, and the 118 was working feverishly to bring him back to life.
With Buck's life very literally hanging in the balance, 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 11 looks to be a little break from the typical 9-1-1 hour. We'll see Buck in a self-described fever dream, where he imagines a life in which he never became a firefighter. And it's hard to fathom a world like that ever existing.
Buck's identity is so intrinsically tied to his profession, so it's odd to think of him doing anything else with his adult life.
But it's a fascinating premise for an episode, and it allows the series to try something a little unorthodox as they continue to explore Buck's journey this season.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 10, “In a Flash.”] Just like the episode title suggests, everything can change in an instant. In one of the most intense (and best) endings to a 9-1-1 episode to date, the members of 118, having been dealing with calls involving lightning strikes, find themselves having to save one of their own. Buck (Oliver Stark), after stopping Chimney (Kenneth Choi) from going up the ladder, is struck by lightning, leading to him falling off and leaving him hanging for a heart-stopping few moments before everyone leaps into action. He has no pulse and is in full cardiac arrest when they rush him to the hospital. Executive producer Kristen Reidel explains why the episode ended like it did and teases what’s ahead — for Buck, as well as the other first responders. Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from Fox’s “9-1-1” Season 6 spring premiere on Monday, entitled “In a Flash.”
The sixth season of Fox first-responder drama “9-1-1” returned Monday after a months-long winter hiatus, with an episode in which almost everything goes surprisingly right for the 118 — until it goes horribly wrong.
Before the bad came the good, when Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi) hosted their families at their new house with daughter Jee-Yun. Maddie was expecting her and Buck’s (Oliver Stark) parents, and imagining that they would be quite judgmental and rude, as they have been in the past. Chimney, meanwhile, had invited only his brother Albert (John Harlan Kim), but got a surprise visit from his estranged father and stepmother, as well — immediately assuming they would be even harder on him than Maddie’s parents would be on her.

As executive producer Kristen Reidel puts it, “the family that solves crime together stays together.” Such is the case on 9-1-1, with Bobby’s (Peter Krause) investigation into the rehab facility near where his sponsor’s body was found, and TV Insider has an exclusive sneak peek at the March 6 episode of him, Athena (Angela Bassett), and May (Corinne Massiah) working together. Athena and May go undercover, and the former is told that her daughter can “absolutely start today,” since there is an open bed. Furthermore, no one will know her daughter is there because they’re “exclusive.” According to Athena, “I have a friend who runs a hedge fund, he likes to say that’s French for expensive.” Carrie (Alicia Coppola) doesn’t disagree. “If you know the finance world, then you know the value of a good investment, an investment in your daughter’s future,” she says.

The 118 have narrowed down a return date.

The last fresh episode of the procedural drama aired on November 28, leaving fans with plenty of questions about when the show would be back.
9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 9 wrapped with Bobby dealing with a personal tragedy in the form of his sponsor's death.

The 118 will be back before you know it. 9-1-1 returns with the second half of its sixth season on Monday, March 6, Fox has announced. The last new episode aired on November 28, and it ended with pretty much everyone in a good place, but a few questions still up in the air. Buck (Oliver Stark) learned the friends for whom he’s a sperm donor are having a baby. “The question for Buck is really what is that role?” executive producer Kristen Reidel told TV Insider. “Some of the things that we’ll explore in the back half with Buck is, what was it that made him say yes? What does he want his role to be? Because obviously every circumstance is different. Some sperm donors never know their kids, their kids never know them. Others, they do. There’s gonna be a little bit of navigating that and...

If there's one thing you can always count on, it's a wild and crazy 9-1-1 midseason finale.

Heading into the hiatus, we caught up with 9-1-1 Executive Producer Kristen Reidel, who broke down all of the critical plot points from the hour and looked ahead to what we can expect when the show returns.

Tonight’s hour: explosive! Aisha Hinds’ Hen Wilson takes center stage in 9-1-1 Season 6 Episode 6 (airing October 24 on Fox) when the Lafd paramedic and the 118 respond to an eruption at the lab where her wife, Karen (Tracie Thoms), works. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist — which Karen actually is — to realize that a place containing unstable substances and high-tech equipment is a ticking time bomb. “The building houses many departments under the same roof, which come with different dangers,” explains executive producer Kristen Reidel, adding ominously, “some that the 118 isn’t even aware of when they arrive.” Karen and Hen’s budding scientist and roboticist son, sixth-grader Denny (Declan Pratt), is also on site. “Part of his project is in-person observation of Karen’s day-to-day duties,” Reidel says. “No one expects an emergency of this magnitude to occur.” While the first responders race the clock, the episode...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Let the Games Begin,” the “9-1-1” Season 6 premiere.
“9-1-1” returned in all its zany glory Monday on Fox with the premiere of its sixth season. During the episode, Oliver Stark’s Evan “Buck” Buckley tackled a blimp emergency with his team at the 118 — and yet that somehow wasn’t the biggest hurdle he had to overcome in the Season 6 premiere.
Here, Variety breaks down the episode, titled “Let the Games Begin,” with Stark and how it lays the groundwork for Buck’s journey throughout the rest of “9-1-1” Season 6.
What are you thoughts on Buck’s feelings about being passed over for replacement captain while Bobby is away? What does he need to do to become ready to take on that role some day?
I think being a firefighter is such a huge part of Buck’s identity.

It’s a bird, it’s a plane — it’s an emergency! Season 6 of the audacious first-responder drama opens in the unfriendly skies, with Firehouse 118 racing to stop a Hindenburg-level disaster at an L.A. stadium. “There’s something iconic about a blimp flying over a sporting event,” says exec producer Kristen Reidel. “But what if the blimp flew into a sporting event? Now that’s 9-1-1.” We can’t spoil the twist as the out-of-control blimp approaches a Women’s International Soccer match, but co-executive producer Jann Turner, who directs the episode, teases that firefighters Chimney (Kenneth Choi), Eddie (Ryan Guzman), and Buck (Oliver Stark) “scale dizzying heights” to reach the trapped captains. Meanwhile, on the ground, “a stampede has left chaos” for LAPD boss Athena Grant (Angela Bassett) to manage. Turner’s team used storyboards (below) to plan how they’d bring the nail-biting sequence to life.

“It feels like the 9-1-1 of old,” Oliver Stark (firefighter Evan “Buck” Buckley) says of the “big” Season 6. And Buck 1.5 co-showrunner Kristen Reidel teased at the end of Season 5? He’s not going anywhere. Stark tells us more about where Season 6, including where it finds his character. Last we saw Buck, he made the mature decision about his relationship with Taylor (Megan West). Is he sticking to that — not doing what he’s done in the past when it comes to relationships — when the season begins? Oliver Stark: He is. 9-1-1 is kicking off its sixth season with a major disaster — a blimp! — and with one of the 118’s own in some serious trouble. Firehouse 118 winds down Season 5 with a series of “starting over” emergencies. “It’s kind of a pun,” explains 9-1-1 executive producer Kristen Reidel of the calls, which include a woman’s ill-fated request for a new look at the hair salon and the rescue of a wellness guru from his overly enlightened (aka drug-crazed) followers. 9-1-1 has returned, and we’re on the verge of getting the answers we’ve been waiting for to one simple question: Where has Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) been, and what will happen when Chimney (Kenneth Choi) finds her? Maddie left earlier in the season out of concern that it wasn’t safe for her to be around her and Chimney’s daughter. He soon took off after her, despite the message she left, and last we saw him, he was still trying to track her down. That all changes in the March 28 episode, “Boston.” Co-showrunner Kristen Reidel teases what’s ahead for Maddie and Chimney and how the season will end. In “Boston,” Chimney’s determined to find Maddie amongst the chaos of St. Patrick’s Day. What can you tease? Kristen Reidel: Maddie’s been gone for six months, and Chimney has been gone almost as long.

Before launching “9-1-1” with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk as a Fox midseason drama in January 2018, Tim Minear was a prolific producer with many impressive TV credits under his belt. Minear, who has the longest-running overall deal at “9-1-1” studio 20th Television, is best known for his work on “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” “American Horror Story,” “Terriers,” “Feud,” “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and “Wonderfalls.” But of those shows, the ones he personally created are best known for being very short-lived. Case in point: ever the self-aware-dark-humorist, Minear’s now-deactivated Twitter handle used to be @CancelledAgain.
“For the longest time, it was always like, what’s the hit network show?” Minear, who is “9-1-1” and spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” co-showrunner, told Variety. “That’s what the studio wants me to do, they want me to come up with a hit network show, and all I wanted to do was weird little cable things.
