In the last several years, Hong Kong cinema has had a fascination with legendary Wing Chun martial artist Ip Man that borders on manic obsession, to the point where it wouldn’t be surprising to find out that Hong Kong cinema spent a week secretly living in Ip Man’s pool house and going through his garbage.
After the Donnie Yen movies, the quasi-prequel and this year’s Ip Man: The Final Fight, Hong Kong auteur Kar-Wai Wong (or Wong Kar-Wai to Westerners) seems to have stepped in and thrown his hat into the increasingly widening Ip Man ring with The Grandmaster, which acts as a somewhat broad biography of Ip Man’s life, told in Kar-Wai’s trademark fragmented narrative style. It's not necessarily DVD or Blu-ray related, but I thought I would mention that this Thursday, October 4, Sony is releasing the brand new 4K digital restoration of Lawrence of Arabia into theaters for one day only ahead of the November 13 Blu-ray release. It's a screening I've been considering seeing myself if I can make the time and I don't know about most areas, but here in Seattle there are both 1 Pm matinees and 7 Pm evening showings. Now, for this week's DVD and Blu-rays... Cinderella (Diamond Edition) I watched it last night and like all of Disney's restored and re-released classic animated titles on Blu-ray it looks amazing. The colors are so perfect, high definition has given new life to these titles and for an animated film from 1950 to look this stunning and be so classically entertaining is reason alone to consider adding it to your collection. At the beginning of the year I made a list of my Top 40 Most Anticipated Movies of 2012. Of that list, it looks like about nine won't be hitting theaters this year and I've now seen 13 of them, which leaves me with only 18 movies and with six months to go I need a little more motivation than just 18 movies and it never hurts to make sure we recharge our batteries and prepare for the home stretch.
