Annecy, France — John Kahrs’ “Age Of Sail” and Jan Pinkava and Mark Oftedal’s “Piggy” are two of the four state-of-the art-animated Vr projects that Google Spotlight Stories (Gss) has brought this year to Annecy. For the third year running, Gss – a division of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (Atap) group – and Google Vr are partnering with Vr@Annecy, a non-competitive category of the official selection.
At a Studio Focus Session on Wednesday presented by Gss, titled “Animation Everywhere,” the projects’ creators discussed their shorts while exploring the storytelling capabilities of Vr, as well as the limitations and possibilities of 360 immersion. The panel was moderated by Gss’ executive producer Karen Dufilho and Pinkava, Gss’ creative director. Panelists included Kahrs, directors François-Xavier Goby and Hélène Leroux (“Back to the Moon”), and artist Céline Desrumaux, production designer in “Age.”
Kahrs took home the best animated short Oscar and an Annie Award in 2013 for his hybrid “Paperman.

It’s a film starring Sundance Film Fest creator Robert Redford and another film starring Sundance mainstay James Franco that are the latest and last items to officially pad the 2015 edition. Ken Kwapis’ A Walk in the Woods (surely to be discussed as a companion piece to Gus Van Sant’s heavy Cannes contender The Sea of Trees) and Rupert Goold’s directorial debut, True Story – a story that is stranger than fiction close out the Premieres selections. Also announced we find items for New Frontier, Sundance Kids and the From the Collection items. And while the line-up is complete, the actual final piece to the puzzle might actually be a secret screening or two. This year I wager on Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups playing as a non official showing. Here’s the press release.

The first time I recall Terry Gilliam‘s name being used to sell me on a movie it was City of Lost Children, but that was through a critic blurb making a comparison between the Brazil director and City‘s Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro. Prior to that, though, he’d actually lent his name as a presenter for their Delicatessen. I might not have discovered those movies without the endorsement. Later, Gilliam also put his name in a similar manner on Bill Plympton’s Idiots and Angels. As a Gilliam fan, I fell in love with Jeunet’s work immediately, while I’d already been into Plympton and now had more reason to appreciate the animation legend. I don’t know that Gilliam attached his name to anything before, between or after those two — I’m not counting the BBC TV adaptation of the book The Last Machine: Early Cinema and the Birth of the...

This afternoon, with poutine and local wine to mark the occasion, the Toronto International Film Festival announced their Canadian film selections. Programmers Steve Gravestock and Agata Smoluch Del Sorbo proudly pronounced that this year both new and seasoned filmmakers had the “curiosity and courage to show troubling issues occurring in our country in new and exciting ways.” Past festival favorite (and one of my personal own as well) Xavier Dolan, the always controversial Bruce Labruce and Jennifer Baichwal’s films garnered applause from the crowd at the majestic Royal York ballroom. Titles sure to draw headlines and attention in the Canadian slate are Denis Villeneuve’s locally filmed ‘Enemy‘ which has Jake Gyllenhall playing a man with two identities, torn between a mistress and a wife. Villeneuve’s other recent feature ‘Prisoners‘ was previously announced as a festival title. It’s worth mentioning that two feature films being presented at...

Where the Wild Things Are
Spike Jonze's ambitious feature, based on the Maurice Sendak classic, led Todd Gilchrist to write: "Where the Wild Things Are is most effective because it faithfully recreates the dimensions of childhood experience, but it filters them through the realities of adulthood. As an understated work of spectacle, or maybe a spectacular work of understatement, Jonze's latest film is not only his best to date, but a monstrous achievement in its own right - with or without the big furry creatures." Buy it.
The Blu-ray disc includes a bonus film: the too-adorable and super-cute adaptation of Sendak's Higgelty Pigglety Pop! -- the latest short from Madame Tutli-Putli filmmakers Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski. Meryl Streep voices a dog who leaves her master to find a new life and become a star for the World Mother Goose Theater. (Spike Jonze and Forest Whitaker also lend their voices.

Spike Jonze’s adaptation of Maurice Sendak’s children’s book Where the Wild Things Are was certainly one of the most interesting experiments in storytelling on film last year, not to mention an emotional depiction of what it’s like to be a child in a confusing world. Jonze was also clever in combining computer generated facial features with live action costumes for the wild things, creating an experience totally different from anything else.

Spike Jonze has produced a new live-action/animated adaptation of Maurice Sendak's Higglety Pigglety Pop! or There Must Be More to Life. Toronto -- Tough times have coin-starved indie producers hopping from the Toronto International Film Festival to IFP in New York City, by way of the Strategic Partners co-production conference in Halifax.
Strategic Partners organizer Jan Miller points to a "higher caliber" of producers, sales agents, funders and broadcasters in Halifax from Friday to Sunday as traditional financing sources these days go dry or are depleted.
"Everyone has limited funds and limited time as they look to grab people between Toronto and Ifp," she said of this year's producer matchmaking.
About 30 projects have been invited to Halifax to participate in Canada's biggest film financing forum during the Atlantic Film Festival.
Montreal-based producer Melissa Malkin of Silo Corp. will be shopping in both Halifax and New York "White Circus," a live action/animated feature from Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski, who wrote and directed the Academy Award-nominated short animated drama "Madame Tulti Pulti.

- Now in their third year and one-week prior to Oscar night, Magnolia Pictures and Shorts Internation have come up with the ingenious idea of putting out the yearly Oscar-nominated short films in the Live Action and Animation categories (10 in all) first in theaters and quickly followed up by a DVD release. It's a nifty initiative on their part and great incentive to check out the short film form without needing to check out a load of other crap. We'll be profiling a good chunk of the 10 filmmakers listed below with our monthly feature: Short Film Corner. Look for the 10-collection in theaters starting on the 15th in over 50 theaters across the U.S. Two thumbs up for you Magnolia! The nominated Live Action Shorts are: At Night; Denmark, Oscar® Nominees: Christian E. Christiansen & Louise Vesth. - The Toronto International Film Festival Group (Tiffg) announced this year's top ten Canadian feature films including higher-profile pics and items from a set of new-comers. In addition, this year's group of 10 is actually a group of 20 - they've included a ten-list of short films as well. Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski's Madame Tutli-putli (whom we featured here on Ioncinema.com - read our Q and A with the pair of filmmakers here) is the short film that has fairly great chances at making an appearance at this year's Acamdey Awards. The top ten list is part of a series of Q&As by filmmakers and panel discussions to be held in Canada's cap - from January 25 to February 5 at Cinematheque Ontario in Toronto. - It’s no coincidence that the Sundance Festival Short Film Program had to sift through a lot more short films this year – video filmmakers are popping out from everywhere and filling the web with viral video content. A whopping 5,107 submissions were submitted and a total of 83 were programmed for the upcoming edition of the 08 fest. While more doesn’t necessarily mean better, the stuff I’ve seen at the last two editions easily demonstrates that there is some great talent to explore and in the case of Apple's iTunes Movie Store, Xbox Live and the Netflix – talent to exploit. The trio of companies will promote the films throughout the year, but for those not going to the fest you can check for daily uploads at www.sundance.org/festival Among the already popular submissions are a pair of new works from Ken Wardrop, Julia Kwan - a Canadian filmmaker
