Her mother is Puerto Rican and her father is Ecuadorian.
Represented her high school in Staten Island's Chemistry Olympics.
"Minchala" is her last name by birth and means "happy spirit" or "face that smiles" in Quechua. Quechua is an official language in Ecuador, where her father is from. It is spoken mostly by the indigenous people. She took her Spanish last name when "Minchala" proved difficult for people to pronounce.
