Brandon Routh and Mena Suvari will lead the cast of Grammy-winning director Joseph Kahn’s next film, “Ick.”
The film aims to evoke the timeless creature features of the 1980s with an ambitious arsenal of scares and comedy. Routh stars as Hank, a high school science teacher who still pines for his childhood sweetheart, played by Suvari. While discovering he may have a teenage daughter, portrayed by Malina Weissman (“Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events”), Hank must grapple with a terrifying alien anomaly (the titular “Ick”) invading their small town.
Interstellar Entertainment, co-founded by Udaya Sharma, D.C. Cassidy and Michael Fisk, is backing the project. The company is emerging as a powerhouse in the independent film space, currently in the midst of a $100 million fundraising effort.

Two of Mexico’s most respected women film executives Alejandra Paulín and Maru Garzón, have been named joint heads of the country’s Los Cabos Intl. Film Festival, one of Latin America’s fastest-growing film events. Paulín will serve as executive director and Garzón as artistic director.
The appointments were announced Thursday by Los Cabos president Eduardo Sánchez Navarro and Alfonso Pasquel, president of Los Cabos Arte y Cultura A.C.
Paulín and Garzón replace Hugo Villa, Los Cabos Festival director at last year’s edition but named in February as director of Mexico’s Unam Filmoteca, a key national cinematheque.
Garzón and Paulín’s new joint leadership recognizes their role in the build of Los Cabos, launched as recently as 2012, as a key – as well as highly enjoyable – event working an ever more dynamic U.S.-Mexico-Canada movie axis. Both already held top jobs at Los Cabos, Garzón as programming director,...

While we often see headlines about spec script inciting studio bidding wars, the reality is most screenplays don’t sell themselves. Attracting financiers to help turn screenplays into actual movies usually requires one or more agents who are highly skilled in the art of packaging — the process of attaching actors, directors or other essential ingredients to a project.

During a panel conversation at Ifp Film Week on Monday, two film agents and one sales agent shared examples of how packaging movie ideas or completed screenplays with other elements helped get projects off the ground fast.
One example from Los Angeles-based ICM agent Peter Trinh involved an actor with no writing credits named Scott Cooper who had written a script called “Crazy Heart,” based on the tragic story of an aging country music musician.

At the “Working with the Right Agent” panel at Ifp Film Week, one thing we heard a lot of is that it’s a business of relationships and connections. Peter Trinh (International and Independent Film Agent, ICM) says that for big agencies, it’s impossible to look at everything that gets sent to them, so he pays a lot of attention to what the people he trusts recommend. Since his pile of scripts would be literally impossible to read in its entirety, he’s much more likely to read the ones he’s heard good things about. And to that point, he says it’s […]...

Now in its fourth year, the Finnish Film Affair, which runs Sept 22-24, has attracted a record number of 70 guests and top Us executives for a panel on how to develop films for the American market. New this year is the award for Best Pitch in the works-in-progress presentation worth 3000 Euros of international marketing funds. The Finnish Film Affair takes place as part of the Helsinki International Film Festival, a.k.a. Love & Anarchy.
With Jalmari Helander putting Finland on the map with "Big Game" starring Samuel L. Jackson and its international success, local filmmakers can find out more on how to tackle the U.S. market from leading U.S. experts, including Ryan Wickers (Director of Development of U.S. Production at EuropaCorp), Peter Trinh (Agent, International and Independent Film ICM), Robert Burke (Managing Director, TenOne Entertainment) and Sundance Film Festival senior programmer Hussain Currimbhoy. The panel’s moderator is La-based producer Gudrun Giddings (CEO & Producer at G4C Innovation).
Last year’s Finnish Film Affair projects that went on to international success were Pirjo Honkasalo’s "Concrete Night," which won the Spotlight Award from the American Society of Cinematographers this year, and Klaus Härö's "The Fencer," which is this year’s Oscar entry for Finland and sold is by the Little Film Company.
This year’s Works-in-Progress line-up of nineteen projects includes work by as many as six female directors: Katja Gauriloff ("Canned Dreams," Berlin 2012), Zaida Bergroth ("The Good Son," Tiff 2011), Selma Vilhunen (Academy Award-nominee for Best Short Film "Do I Have to Take Care of Everything?" 2014), and Elli Toivoniemi (producer of "Do I Have to Take Care of Everything?," now launching her directing career).
As Hiff executive director Sara Norberg comments, “It’s great to see former Finnish Film Affair titles doing so well. After three successful editions, the Finnish Film Affair has clearly established itself internationally as the place to discover new local talent. Our aim is to strengthen that local talent with our panels, the Project Development Clinic and now the new award for best pitch. At a time when the discussion about equal funding opportunities for female directors has become a hot topic, we are especially proud to be presenting so many female-driven projects.”
The Project Development Clinic will feature ten projects by first and second-time filmmakers. Confirmed guests include sales companies, distributors and programmers from Europe and North America: Fortissimo, Urban Distribution, Picture Tree International, Dogwoof, Trust Nordisk, Cinemavault, Nonstop Entertainment, Sundance, and SXSW.

The Palm Springs ShortFest has announced that highly-acclaimed writer/director Gus Van Sant will be presented with the ShortFest Spirit of Short Film Award as part of a special Directing Master Class presentation celebrating his work in film. A selection of his short films will be shown on Saturday, June 23rd at 2:30 p.m. with a discussion headed by Festival Director Darryl Macdonald. Van Sant, who earned Oscar nominations for "Good Will Hunting" and "Milk," was previously honored at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in 2009 when he received the Sonny Bono Visionary Award.
I personally salute the Palm Springs ShortFest. It is such a grassroots effort that honor the diversity and talent of many striving filmmakers. And most of the films shown move on to win Oscars such as "Freeheld" which won Best Documentary Short in 2008.

The department, which also includes agent Peter Trinh, brokered or co-repped eight distribution deals during and following the Sundance Film Festival, including the North American acquisitions of festival award winners Robot And Frank, starring Frank Langella and Susan Sarandon; the Duplass Bros-produced Safety Not Guaranteed, Ryan O’Nan’s...
