New Delhi, July 26 (Ians) England’s quest for winning the Ashes 2023 ended when day five of the fourth Test was abandoned without a ball being bowled at Old Trafford. It meant the Ben Stokes-led side could not push for a victory, as England played a draw for the first time since they changed their approach to playing Test cricket.
With one more match to go at The Oval, starting from Thursday, England will aim to draw the series at 2-2, a situation similar to the one they faced and emerged victorious from in the 2019 Ashes.
Ahead of the fifth Test, Alastair Cook, England’s highest run-scorer in Tests, spoke exclusively to Ians about the Ashes and how the hosts could have won the series.
Here are excerpts from the interview:
Q. What are your views on the ongoing Ashes, which has been a very thrilling and exciting series to watch till now?...

Manchester, July 16 (Ians) Former England opener Alastair Cook believes Australia’s top-order batter Marnus Labuschagne’s dismissal in the second innings of third Ashes Test at Headingley showed that he was struggling with himself and needs to find form if the visitors need to win in last two matches.
From appearing as an injury replacement for Steve Smith at Lord’s in August 2019 in the Ashes through to the start of this summer, Labuschagne averaged 62. However, the right-hander batter has averaged only 24 and is looking a pale shadow of himself in the current Ashes series, apart from losing his top spot in the Men’s Test batters ranking.
“Credit to England because they have bowled brilliantly to him — literally from the first ball, when Stuart Broad dismissed him at Edgbaston. Before the series, Broad said he had developed an outswinger with which he was going to target Labuschagne and Smith,...

London, June 29 (Ians) Australia were dealt with a major injury scare on Thursday when premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon limped off the field while fielding during day two of the second Ashes Test against England at Lord’s.
Lyon, who is playing in his 100th consecutive Test, was running in to take a catch of Ben Duckett off the bowling of Cameron Green in the leg-side after tea, when he pulled up sharply while running towards the ball.
The injury looked so serious that Lyon had to go off the field by taking the support of a member of the Australian team medical staff and shook off in pain while clutching the calf region of his right leg.
A statement from Cricket Australia confirmed Lyon has suffered a right calf injury and would be further assessed after the close of day’s two play. “A further update, if available, will be shared in the morning,...

London, June 28 (Ians) After taking the field for the second Test of Ashes 2023 against England at Lord’s, veteran Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon on Wednesday became the first specialist bowler to play 100 consecutive matches in the longest format of the game.
Lyon, who made his Test debut in July 2011, has also become only the sixth player in the history of cricket to feature in 100 consecutive Tests. Other players in the list are Alastair Cook (159), Allan Border (153), Mark Waugh (107), Sunil Gavaskar (106) and Brendon McCullum (101).
Coincidentally, Lyon has achieved this rare landmark at Lord’s, the same venue where he was dropped in the format for the last time. This was almost a decade ago during Australia’s tour of England for the 2013 Ashes series.
“That’s something I’m really proud of. To be able to tick off 100 consecutive Test matches, that’s a proper stat in my head. That’s a lot of Test cricket,...

Despite the broad and expansive civilization on display in the "Star Wars" universe, there remain several cultural signifiers that remain obscure to most mainstream viewers. It's rare, for instance, that one might see books or physical writing in "Star Wars." There also doesn't seem to be any type of long-range communication technology, as distant planets seem to remain ignorant of war news. How else would a character like Luke Skywalker pass into myth only after a mere 30 years out of the public eye? Here on Earth, we certainly have records stretching back to the year 1993. Although it is plausible that many readers have forgotten about the 1993 TV series "Acapulco H.E.A.T."
Another thing rarely seen in "Star Wars" is legal tender. It wouldn't be until the 2018 film "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" that off-world coinage would be seen in great quantities (in the Canto Bight Casino sequence), and that the universe...

People say that time waits for no one, but what if you could stop the clock? Benedict Cumberbatch is about to discover the answer when his How to Stop Time movie project goes from being developed as a film to becoming a TV series. Studiocanal is teaming up SunnyMarch to turn Matt Haig’s novel into an episodic exploration of aging and the consequences of becoming eternal. Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh announced the project at Mip TV today, saying the How to Stop Time series will consist of six episodes, with Cumberbatch and Studiocanal attached.
How to Stop Time is an intense genre-bender focusing on men and women who live for hundreds of years after contracting a rare condition. Tom Hazard has lived for hundreds of years and is sick and tired of losing everything he loves.
Here’s the synopsis for Haig’s novel via Amazon:

New Delhi, Feb 24 (Ians) The McC World Cricket Committee (Wcc) has shown unanimous support to the law regarding the act of bowlers running out non-strikers over leaving their ground early, calling the law not only correct and necessary but issued a ‘call for calm’ to the global game.
The Wcc, which met at the Icc headquarters in Dubai last week, said through a statement that it is now calling for calm across all levels of the game, from the grassroots level of recreational cricket to the elite level, given that the act of running out a non-striker who opts to steal ground is within the Laws of the game.
“The bowler is not the villain here. Every batter has a choice, to stay in their ground, or risk being given out if they try to steal ground. If they choose the latter, they are the ones who are breaking the Law,...

Manchester, Aug 28 (Ians) England cricket’s managing director and the current selection panel head Rob Key has backed out-of-form openers Alex Lees and Zak Crawley, saying he is willing to give more time to the struggling pair despite them scoring a combined 477 runs at an average of 21.68 in six home Tests this summer.
Crawley has been going through a prolonged form slump at the top, with the 24-year-old opener managing just nine and 13 against the Proteas in the opening Test at Lord’s, which England lost by an innings and 12 runs inside three days.
The right-handed batter, however, gave a better display in the second Test at Old Trafford, scoring 38 off 101 balls as England won the Test by an innings and 85 runs to level the series 1-1.

New Delhi, Aug 25 (Ians) Adding another feather to his cap, veteran England fast bowler James Anderson on Thursday scripted history by becoming the first cricketer in the history of the sport to play 100 Test matches at home.
The 40-year-old pacer achieved the landmark during the second Test between England and South Africa in Manchester.
While 72 players have played over 100 Test matches in their career, none have appeared in more than 100 Tests at home. Sachin Tendulkar, who is the only player to play 200 Tests, has 94 appearances in India and comes behind Anderson in the list.
England teammate Stuart Broad is fourth on the list with 91 appearances while former teammate Alastair Cook is fifth with 89 Tests at home.
Overall, Anderson comes behind Tendulkar with 174 Test appearances. Cook and Broad are the only other England players with more than 150 Tests under their belt.

Chennai, Feb 10 (Ians) Joe Root's men came out with a "perfect performance" against India in the first Test, which they won by 227 runs at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium, says former England captain Nasser Hussain.
Hussain, however, believes that England should expect India to "come back at them" in the remaining matches of the four-Test series, the second of which begins from Saturday at the same venue.
"People were writing England off, saying this series could be 4-0 to India. No one really gave this side much of a chance. India had been on top of their game. Had won in Australia, Virat Kohli was back and India is a very difficult place to go and win in Test match cricket," wrote Hussain in his latest column for Sky Sports.
"So, this win for England has to be right up there, especially away from home. They put in the perfect performance.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) England's past successes over India in India have come with the aid of sweep shots and they used the same stroke to grind the Indian slow bowlers on a flat, batting-friendly Ma Chidambaram wicket here on Saturday.
Skipper Joe Root got to his fifth double century, becoming the first player to get to the figure in his 100th Test. On Friday, he had waited for 50 balls before employing the sweep which he had used quite successfully during the tour of Sri Lanka. But once in and settled, he used it to great effect trying to spoil the line and length of India bowlers.
Ben Stokes joined in and swept quite a few balls to the boundary as the Indian bowlers struggled.
Former India wicket-keeper Kiran More tweeted on Saturday, "Saw #GrahamGooch sweeping @RaviShastriOfc and #ManinderSingh during the 1987 @cricketworldcup semi-final. Then @KP24 used reverse sweep quite effectively in...

Galle, Jan 23 (Ians) England captain Joe Root went past former opener Geoffrey Boycott on the list of top run-getters for England here on Saturday. Root, who was unbeaten on 67 after the end of the second day of the second Test against Sri Lanka, has moved to 8,119 runs and is now five runs clear of Boycott, who retired a long time ago.
Root, who is now the sixth highest run-getter for England, could easily move to third spot by the time England's four-Test tour of India ends in March. He needs 345 more runs to topple Alec Stewart from the third position.
Former England captain Alastair Cook is the all-time highest run-getter for England with 12,472 Test runs against his name. He is followed by Graham Gooch, who has 8,900 runs. Alec Stewart, David Gower and Kevin Pietersen are the others ahead of Root.
This was Root's 50th Test half-century. He now has 296 runs...

London, Jan 22 (Ians) Australia are no more the best team in the world and what England should be focusing at is to beat India in India as they have been "virtually unbeatable" at home since 2012, feels former England off-spinner Graeme Swann.
England will be taking on India in a four-Test series beginning February 5, followed by five T20Is and three ODIs. The Virat Kohli-led side would be high on confidence following their recent memorable Test series win over Australia in their own backyard.
According to Swann, beating India in India would now be a higher achievement than winning Ashes series away considering the performances of Team India in recent times.
"England always saying 'well the Ashes are coming up'. B***ocks to that. If you want to be the best team in the world, let's be the best team all over the planet, not just trying to beat Australia away.

The Edge, directed by Barney Douglas, follows the England Cricket team between the infamous years of success from 2009 to 2013. Beginning in late 2008 with England on a destructive path of self-annihilation during their world tour, following the teams slow rebuild with refreshed ideas resulting in a newfound success on a world stage, touching on the inevitable downfall and mental fatigue that comes with the global unification of serial winning.
First and foremost, The Edge is not merely a simplistic film about the sport of cricket. It is not a one-note love letter of which its main focus is to preach to the already convinced choir of fans. It is far from it. It is a film that works wonderfully on two levels.
