Kenya Barris was deeply inspired by “The Cosby Show” when he created “Black-ish” in 2014. The writer and executive producer wanted to create a similarly beloved family sitcom that was expressly Black, not only with the characters, but also in the subject matter the show covered. That mission was achieved, and like “The Cosby Show,” “Black-ish” went on to spawn a TV universe that would also make an impact.
“Grown-ish” was the first “Black-ish” spinoff. It has now gone six seasons and will air its 100th episode this month. Similar to “A Different World” with Lisa Bonet’s Denise Huxtable from “The Cosby Show,” “grown-ish” has chronicled the college adventures of “Black-ish” characters Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) and later Andre Johnson Jr. (Marcus Scribner). “Grown-ish” has become a tentpole series for Freeform, according to Simran Sethi, exec VP of programming and content at Freeform and ABC.

Marcus adds, “This has been 10 years of my life, so I’ve had the fortunate opportunity to grow up on the show.” Yara notes that the final season “lands the plane with a couple of storylines I think we were all excited to figure out what’s going to happen with those characters.

Bras are out. Nipples are in. Saint Laurent’s fall/winter 2024-2025 runway show was the place to prove it. Several celebs, like Zoë Kravitz, went braless for the presentation. Others, like Olivia Wilde, bared it all through their sheer tops. Is it the year of the nipple? The stars say yes.

Zoë Kravitz exemplified a more understated version of the bra-less trend. The Batman star wore a very thin nut-brown tank top and a matching skirt. Her top was nearly sheer, showing off her curves.
Kravitz demonstrated the nipple-forward trend some believe was spurred by Skims’ nipple bra, which sold out in less than a month when it debuted in late 2023. With Kravitz’s natural accessories showing through, the 35-year-old donned a simple black belt, dangly earrings, sheet tights, and chocolate-colored pumps.

As of publication, Michelle Williams is understood by many as one of the most gifted actors working today. She has two Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, has been nominated for a Tony Award, and boasts a whopping five Academy Award nominations. Her breakthrough performance in "Brokeback Mountain" in 2005 earned her first Oscar nomination, and she's been one of the most highly sought-after performers ever since. But "Brokeback Mountain" was not Williams' first role, nor was she some actor plucked from obscurity and tossed into prestige cinema. For six seasons, Williams starred as Jen Lindley on "Dawson's Creek," one of the most formative teen dramas in television history.
And yet when she nabbed the role of Alma Beers del Mar in "Brokeback Mountain," the general conversation wasn't fixated on her years as a television teen star, nor were people dismissing her casting due to previous appearances in teen films...

Women in Film returned for its annual Wif Honors on Thursday night, once again recognizing the women working on the frontlines to change the entertainment industry for the better.
The event, held at The Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles, kicked off with the presentation of the Jane Fonda Humanitarian Award, selected and presented by the icon herself. Fonda explained that, “there’s great joy in being an artist, an actor — being paid for your work and recognized, fantastic, wonderful; but to be an activist that’s something else again. To act is to put on a performance, but to be an activist is to perform in service of the world.” She continued, “It’s hard to imagine a more perfect recipient of this recognition,” speaking of this year’s chosen honoree, America Ferrera.
“From her very first moment on the screen in Real Women Have Curves it was obvious...

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds are donating to yet another cause.
The couple donated $1 million to the International Committee of the Red Cross (Icrc) on Friday “to help children in Israel and Gaza,” a source close to the pair told The Hollywood Reporter. They have four children and are adamant about sending financial aid to causes that are important to them.
In the past, Lively and Reynolds matched up to $1 million in donations that were sent to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees after Russia invaded Ukraine, as well as $500,000 to Indigenous-focused safe water charity Water First Education & Training Inc. They also donated another $1 million split between Feeding America and Food Banks Canada, following the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.
More recently, they donated $1 million to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s financial assistance program for performers facing economic hardship as the actors strike continues.

Jennifer Garner, Adam Sandler, Yara Shahidi and more celebrities shared heartfelt messages for innocent victims of the Israel-Hamas war amid increased violence taking place along the Gaza border since Saturday’s terrorist attack in Israel.
The messages poured in as media reports noted that a former leader of Hamas called on supporters of the Palestinian terrorist group to take to the streets for a “Day of Rage.” Following the reports, SAG-AFTRA canceled its Friday pickets planned for New York City and Los Angeles, citing “potential safety concerns that are unrelated to our ongoing strike.” The Academy Museum gala, which was set to welcome an A-list roster of talent this Saturday, was also postponed “out of respect for the devastating conflict and loss of life happening overseas.”

Giambattista Valli, the Italian designer known for creating oversize silhouettes while wowing audiences with his bodacious gowns, took a more low-key design approach for his Spring Summer 2024 collection unveiling on Sept. 29. Valli has been on so many red carpets this year, on such stars as Penélope Cruz and Yara Shahidi to Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Perhaps this could be why actors Madison Bailey, Lucy Hale, and Sofia Carson were posted front row at the show, plotting their next Valli red carpet moment post the actor’s strike. Also, front row were socialites David Blasberg and Ivy Getty, and Olivia Palermo and her model husband Johannes Huebl.
At the Oscars this year, actors Allison Williams, Sandra Oh, and Carson stunned in extravagant silhouette gowns from the brand, while at the 2023 SAG Awards, Angela Bassett stunned in a yellow off-the-shoulder mermaid gown. PinkPantheress’ priorities couldn’t be more in order. Her commitment to the early 2000s aesthetic led her to channel the romantic comedies of that time in the music video for her latest single “Mosquito.” But instead of yearning for the affection of men with deeply hit-or-miss haircuts, she went with the more obvious win: those shopping sprees the protagonist and her friends always seemed to have endless funds for.
PinkPantheress stars in the nostalgia-drenched video alongside Bridgerton actress Charithra Chandran, Queen Charlotte star India Amarteifio, and Black-ish lead Yara Shahidi.

Apple has become the latest entertainment company to suspend additional overall and first-look deals this month as the WGA strike is getting past the four-and-a-half-month mark.
As has been the case with the other recent suspensions at Disney, NBCUniversal, Warner Bros. TV and CBS Studios, impacted are non-writing producers who are not currently rendering services due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. I hear the handful of pacts that are being suspended include those for Natalie Portman’s MountainA, the company she formed with producer Sophie Mas, and Adam McKay’s Hyperobject Industries. A number of the streamer’s high-profile deals with non-writing producers are still ongoing as they are working on projects, including Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone, which is behind the upcoming Apple series Masters of the Air. Martin Scorsese, who signed a film and TV deal with...

The move involves producers who are not performing services due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
According to sources, Disney will pay for the suspended term deals to provide salaries for their assistants through the end of 2023 and for their development executives through the first week of October.
I hear the list of suspensions include deals with Not Dead Yet star Gina Rodriguez and ThIs Is Us alums Justin Hartley, Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore at 20th Television, Yara Shahidi (grown-ish) and director-producer Marc Webb (Rebel) at ABC Signature as well...

Once again, we find ourselves faced with another film centered around a protagonist battling cancer, whose impending mortality serves as a catalyst for their best friend’s aspirations and ambitions. Sitting in Bars With Cake falls short of expectations, leaving viewers with dry eyes, even though it’s based on a true story. In fact, even if you steer clear of spoilers, just reading a brief synopsis of the film would pretty much give you the entire plot. However, it’s crucial to emphasize that this critique is not meant to undermine the real-life friendship and experiences of Audrey Shulman and Chrissy Osmulski, whose remarkable bond inspired the film. Their innovative and somewhat whimsical concept of cake-barring originated from their shared love of sweet treats.

Yara Shahidi and Odessa A’Zion play best friends dealing with cakes and crisis in a well-acted yet often underbaked weepie
Ten years ago, the screenwriter Audrey Shulman whipped up a quirky plan to find a boyfriend in LA: an amateur dessert enthusiast, she would bake one cake a week – 50 in total – and offer them to patrons at bars around the city. The practice, which she called cakebarring, became an ever-surprising tour of joie de vive, even after Shulman’s best friend, roommate and cakebarring partner Chrissy was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.
That’s the explicit basis, clear from the trailer and the source material, for Amazon’s Sitting in Bars with Cake, starring Yara Shahidi as Audrey’s counterpart Jane, a shy and hyper-organized mailroom assistant who bakes during her Lsat study breaks, and Odessa A’Zion as her childhood best friend turned LA roommate Corinne. This is a tale with a set mold,...

Sitting in Bars With Cake takes inspiration from the real-life story of author and baker Audrey Shulman, who, on one fine day in 2013, decided to take cakes to bars in hopes of finding a ‘sweet’ boyfriend. In theory, Sitting in Bars With Cake sounds right up my alley. Not only do I love a good slice-of-life film, but I also love me some cake, especially if it means crying about a friendship on the screen. I will admit, it’s not the most riveting concept, but it’s got some intrigue to it anyway. I went into this movie expecting (and hoping) to bawl my eyes out, but shockingly enough, barring a lump in my throat on some occasions, there was no real crying. Along with a superstar director, Trish-Sie, the movie stars performers like Yara Shahidi and Odessa A’zion in pivotal roles.
