Remedy Entertainment has redefined the survival horror genre with Alan Wake 2. This game, with its astounding, deep narrative and amazingly developed characters, could easily win Game of the Year at any other time.

Alone in the Dark is an extremely important franchise within the sub-genre of survival horror. The first game in the series is considered by many to be the first true survival horror video game ever released. Thus, without this franchise, other iconic survival horror titles like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Alan Wake may never have come to pass.

This is one reason that this reimagining of the original Alone in the Dark was my most anticipated 2024 release, the other reason is because survival horror remakes have been knocking it out of the park lately. Last year alone saw Capcom expertly remaster the iconic Resident Evil 4, after the year opened with EA releasing a masterful remake of the original Dead Space.

You know, a gripping story full of horror stuff, successful graphics and not-bad gameplay mechanics.

To be specific, Saga Anderson is at the center of the rumors about the game. You know, the brave FBI lady who identifies victims and suspects through telepathy. It seems that the Game Director of Remedy has grown weary of the endless theories about Saga and has finally put an end to the question marks.

“The Bridge: Season 4” is likely the final chapter in this crime drama from Sweden and Denmark. As before, it’s based on a complex crime scenario at their border affecting both countries, providing another round with a new menace for Saga (Sofia Helin) and Henrik (Thure Lindhardt) to confront. That’s hard to get off the ground, since Saga has been in jail for the eight months since Season 3’s events for allegedly killing her allegedly psycho mother. Since her release occurs in the first episode, it’s no spoiler to inform you that she’s cleared and returned to duty, albeit with some difficulties. Even knowing that, the method of getting there is intriguing enough for a good watch.

Back in 2011, the Scandinavian crime series, “The Bridge,” was not only hugely popular in Europe but spawned quite a few remakes and derivatives on both sides of the Atlantic. The now oft-used premise is that a body is found straddling the national border of a bridge joining Denmark and Sweden, creating jurisdictional confusion. That gets worse when they discover that the top and bottom halves are from two different women. Successor series have been set on the US/Mexico, Singapore/Malaysia, Greece/Turkey and the Russia/Estonia borders. A France/England version used the Chunnel in the same way. That list may be more illustrative than complete, since variations exist under non-bridgey titles. In each, a cop from one side partners with one from the other, despite cultural and personal differences that add tensions and friction to the whodunnit component.

Eric Kripke, known for creating hits like The Boys and Supernatural, has set his sights on adapting another popular comic series. He’s got his eye on ‘Saga,’ a unique blend of space opera and fantasy created by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples. Kripke’s passion for the series shines through. He’s even reached out to Vaughan and Staples on social media, promising to take good care of their creation if given the chance to bring it to TV.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's “Pulse” had an inescapable impact on the Japanese horror scene when it hit theatres in 1997. Countless filmmakers were inspired by its pervasive unease and refusal to settle for simple scares. Along with the release of Hideo Nakata's “Ringu” a year later, it set the standard for the J-Horror renaissance that forever altered the cinematic landscape in the 2000s. But even with the hordes of imitators and worshippers, perhaps no film owes more to “Pulse” than “Saimin” by Masayuki Ochiai. Released later as “The Hypnotist” in the U.S., “Saimin” shares themes of hypnosis and the inherent darkness of human nature with “Pulse”, but it is ultimately a more commercial take on the same material, trading in Kurosawa's ambient dread for gonzo thrills.
