Culprits Season 1 Review Out ( Photo Credit – YouTube ) Culprits Season 1 Review: What’s It About:
Culprits is a new heist TV series debuting on Hulu, Disney+, and Star, depending on the territory. The eight-season episode focuses on the life of David, a man living several lives at the same time. The show splits into two timelines, showing David during two pivotal moments in his life: during a massive heist and after the heist. The series then goes back and forth between the two timelines, and we see that getting out of the game is easier said than done. How did David get to this place?...

Series creator J Blakeson enjoys heist films but wanted to do something different with the subgenre. The trailer for Hulu’s Culprits shows that he did just that, setting the story years after a heist when the robbers have put their former criminal ways behind them and have established new lives.
“Heists have been done so many times, the great thing about this is that you can sort of play in that sandbox with the tropes and the expectations and the iconography of the heist, but actually tell a story, which is much more about these people who are dealing with this bad thing they’ve done and the consequences of their actions and trying to escape who they were and are trying to become a person who they’d like to be,” said Blakeson in an interview with Variety.

Set in 2010 on the last day of school before summer, Darryl Foster’s directorial debut Hard To Reach sees a young man and his mentor share a cathartic experience they’ll never forget. Foster (who we saw in Oliver Goodrum’s Iniquity last year) tells the story of his two protagonists across a single day where their conflicting yet similar states of being reach boiling point. It’s a short that relies on its central performances and Foster’s background as an actor allows him to dive into and create fully-rounded, complex characters which combined with the talent of young actor Cory McClane allows the film’s central relationship to flourish in all its intricacies. Dn was fortunate enough to chat with Foster about Hard To Reach, which is currently amidst its festival run, about his experience making the film, from sourcing its budget through the BFI to balancing his...

Undoubtedly one of the British films of the year, it was our pleasure to have the opportunity to speak to the leading star, as we chatted on Zoom with Make Up’s Molly Windsor.
We discuss with the talented young actress (second time of asking – we had internet issues that scampered plans earlier in the day) the joys in tackling such a complex, nuanced role, and whether characters like this come around very often. She comments on her memorable experience shooting, and what it was like to be on the Cornish coast. She also talks about collaborating with director Claire Oakley, and finally on her rise through the industry, and why she feels there’s been such an influx of creative talent to have come out of the Midlands.
Watch the full interview with Molly below:

Claire Oakley's assured debut is all about liminal spaces, both physical and mental, the places and feelings that hang eerily between the concrete and the comforting. Set on a Cornish static caravan site, perched on a clifftop, a scrap of land between civilisation and the sea, this isn't a place full of holidaymakers but a patch of life in transition, as the year slips slowly into winter and the campers slip away.
It's where Tom (Joseph Quinn) has worked the winters for years and where Ruth (Molly Windsor) has come to join him for the first time, finally considered old enough by her parents. She is also in a halfway place, still somewhere between childhood and adulthood, leaving one but perhaps not quite arrived at the other, dipping her toe in the waters with help from fellow, slightly older worker Jade (Stefanie Martini). She has all the assurance Ruth lacks,...

A teenager encounters ghostly goings-on and sexual intrigue at an out-of-season caravan park in a stylish psychological drama
The out-of-season holiday resort, like the abandoned city or ruined temple, has something fascinating and even erotic in its emptiness. Writer-director Claire Oakley taps into this mood for her debut feature, a psychological drama-thriller set in a wintry caravan park in St Ives, Cornwall. She has taken the template of arthouse Brit realism and audaciously spiked it with some genre thrills, as if Ken Loach collaborated with Brian De Palma or Nicolas Roeg. With cinematographer Nick Cooke, Oakley finds the bracingly different aspects of the Cornish landscape: ominous in the darkness, wild in the sunshine and menacing in the cold, as distant sea spray mixes with the cloud cover.

This striking, lo-fi, key art for Claire Oakley's debut feature, Make Up, does unlikely things with colour. Mixing red and green is a one-way ticket to evoking Christmas, but here, it is cosmic and ethereal, like the stargate sequence of 2001: A Space Odyssey. A British body-horror psychodrama in the guise of a lesbian romance (according to Sight & Sound), the Quad-style poster certainly says, "something's up." Mixing the lead character's form with the landscape, that is both grassy hill and isolated lake. There is a village down below, and the night-sky is an un-gradient red. And then there is that thin-chunky type set. In general, the skinnier the font, the more 'art-sci-fi' the film....

Made with the help of her dad on a caravan park, the roots of this sexual psychodrama ended up being an awakening for the director herself
A few years ago, the writer-director Claire Oakley wrote a script for a short film, based on one of her dreams. “It was just a girl, following another girl, through some streets in a foreign town,” she explains, via Zoom, from her home in east London. She submitted it to a writers’ scheme and was accepted on to a retreat in Croatia with 20 other writer-directors, all of whom had to read each other’s work. “This guy came up to me on the first day, and said: ‘Oh, so you’re a lesbian, then.’ And I was like: what? He thought the work was about female desire. And I didn’t know what he was talking about, thought he was really weird, and didn...

"It's not about what it looks like, it's how it makes you feel." Artificial Eye in the UK has released an official trailer for an indie psychological drama titled Make Up, marking the feature directorial debut of English filmmaker Claire Oakley. This initially premiered at the London Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Rotterdam, Göteborg, and Glasgow Film Festivals this year. While at a remote holiday park in Cornwall, a young woman is drawn into a mysterious obsession when she suspects her boyfriend has cheated on her. The official synopsis adds: "Transforming her remote coastal setting into an intangible labyrinth of creeping intrigue, Claire Oakley inventively flirts with genre conventions to weave a singular tale of self-acceptance and sexual awakening." I'm intrigued. Molly Windsor stars as Ruth, with a cast including Joseph Quinn, Stefanie Martini, Theo Barklem-Biggs, Lisa Palfrey, and Elodie Wilton. This looks very moody and hauntingly atmospheric,...

Only three new titles will be playing on the opening weekend.
The UK film release schedule is coming together for July and August as the industry approaches the first weekend that cinemas are allowed to reopen.
However, a lack of venues and the difficulty of coordinating international releases means only two films have confirmed new releases for the first weekend of July, with another beginning previews.
As of July 1, 18 new films will be released into UK cinemas in July. The majority of these are small releases, with none coming from the major studios.

A haunting slow-burn thriller turned coming out story, Make Up is an atmospheric and somewhat provocative tale of Ruth (Molly Windsor), a young woman brought in the middle of the night to a trailer park overlooking the beach in Cornwall, England by boyfriend Tom (Joseph Quinn). Tom works long hours at a local factory, coming home late to Ruth, often loaded. The details are a bit sparse, relying mostly on mood and the tropes of psychological horror to pull the narrative together as Ruth has a series of encounters that, at times, often reminded me of a low-rent version of Peter Strickland’s lush In Fabric.
Directed by Claire Oakley, Make Up is a debut feature lensed in large part like a thriller as the misty atmosphere of a small tourist beach resort in the offseason leads Ruth, a plain Jane who wears little make-up, down some dark corners as...

Ken Loach’s “Sorry We Missed You” and Jessica Hausner’s “Little Joe” have been selected to play in competition at Cannes. But buyers looking for more British-originated fare can head to the firmly established “Great 8” presentation of titles from the country’s up-and-coming filmmakers.
The Great 8 event is backed by the BFI, the British Council, BBC Films and Film4. U.S. buyers from Bleecker Street, Apple and IFC have attended previous editions, as have the likes of France-based The Jokers and Netherlands-based Cherry Pickers, and Transmission Films and Madman from Australasia.
This year the buyers at the sales-boosting event will get a best-of-British look at new films from writers and directors Simon Bird, Cathy Brady, Fyzal Boulifa, Hong Khaou, Rose Glass, Claire Oakley, Eva Riley, and Nick Rowland.
The 2019 lineup includes Rowland’s “Calm With Horses,” starring Cosmo Jarvis (“Lady Macbeth”) and Barry Keoghan (“Dunkirk”), which counts Michael Fassbender among its exec producers.

Exclusive: Screen Stars of Tomorrow involved in trio of projects set for production.
A trio of projects have been greenlit for production in the latest round of Creative England’s low-budget filmmaking initiative iFeatures.
Three Screen Stars of Tomorrow are present in the selected teams - writer-director Eva Riley with Perfect Ten, producer Emily Morgan with Make-up, and producer Michelle Eastwood with Retreat, which is set to be the first British feature film to be made entirely in sign-language.

Subsequently, Lady Macbeth sold to the Us (Roadside Attractions) and UK (Altitude Film) among others, and Peccadillo Pictures acquired The Levelling for the UK.
