On the 20th of December, 1995, tragedy struck America Airlines flight 965 en route from Miami, Florida, to Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport in Cali, Colombia. The initial investigation found that a navigation error led to the crash which claimed 151 lives. But why would two experienced pilots make such an error? There was no alcohol in their bloodstreams. The Boeing 757-200 was equipped with all the latest navigational aides. Something didn't sit right. Two decades after the incident, retired British Airways Captain Tristan Loraine decided to make his own investigation based on the records from the crash, and this documentary is the result.
It begins with the story of the crash itself, incorporating news footage, insights from experienced aviators and a personal angle provided by two of the survivors, a father and daughter, who owe their lives to the persistence of rescue workers in a remote location under almost impossible...

During the Raindance Film Festival last year we previewed Everybody Flies, a film that made a great name for itself on the festival circuit and one that asks very important questions about the safety of our air travel. It introduced to many the dangers of Aerotoxic Syndrome, and explored the legal disputes and the concerted effort from the industry to cloak this secret from those whose lives could be affected.
With implications for every one of us, this is exactly the sort of film that’ll be everywhere soon, so it’s best to get in early. Beginning next week, on the 26th of February in King’s Cross in London, the wonderful Everyman cinemas across the UK will be holding screenings of the film, followed by a live Q&a with co-director Tristan Loraine.

Two months ago we previewed Everybody Flies, one of the standout documentaries premiering at the 2019 Raindance festival in London. Today, we spotlight the next project from writer/director Beth Moran and her producing partner Tristan Loraine.
The short film Missing a Note recently premiered at the New Renaissance Film Festival where it won the award for Best Short. The film deals with a young schoolgirl who wants to be a singer, and whose relationship with a former opera singer suffering a mental decline brings the two together in unexpected ways.
The short offers a thematic resonance to some of the films Moran has produced previously. Last year she produced The Frontier: Ukraine and Lucy: Breaking the Silence, two films which put the humanity of its subjects at the forefront. Though the conflicts in those two films were so different, one internal and the other brutally external, it is the personal...

Former BA pilot Tristan Loraine’s pet project is an agonisingly wooden drama that aims to lift the lid on what he claims is a very real health scandal – but this is just not the way to raise the issue
Here is an oddity. It’s effectively an amateur feature film produced to professional standards – more or less – and directed by a former BA airline pilot called Tristan Loraine. He retired on medical grounds in 2006, then retrained at the National Film and Television School, and is on a mission to campaign against the “aerotoxins” he says are poisoning cabin crew and passengers on all commercial flights, as unfiltered toxic fumes are recirculated into the aircraft. With help from industry colleagues and supported by Express newspapers, Loraine raised the production funds. The drama itself – about an investigative journalist working on this issue – is woodenly acted, clunkily written and agonisingly directed. It...

★★☆☆☆ When it comes to passion projects and coherent filmmaking, there are sometimes odd disparities. There are pitfalls when a director or writer becomes so entrenched in the material that they fail to create a concise or cohesive work. For Tristan Loraine's A Dark Reflection (2015) the passion that comes through from his credits as writer, director and producer is present but it appears to have clouded the ability to present the audience with a story that is full of faulty wiring and stilted performances. Our heroine is Helen (Georgina Sutcliffe), a journalist recently returned to England from an assignment gone awry in the Middle East.

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Modern Times"
Directed by Charlie Chaplin
Released by Criterion Collection
Granted, Warner Brothers released an extensive two-disc collection of arguably Charlie Chaplin's finest film back in 2003, but Criterion Collection is bringing the silent comedian to Blu-ray for the first time with a newly remastered edition of the Depression-era classic with an array of special features including the Dardenne brothers' 2003 tribute to the film, the 1916 two-reeler "The Rink," the Alistair Cooke home movie with Chaplin and Pauline Goddard, "All at Sea," two deleted sequences from the film, a new featurette on the film's special effects with Ben Burtt and Craig Barron and much more.
"Avatar: Extended Collector's Edition"
Directed by James Cameron
Released by Fox Home Entertainment
After a bare bones edition was released in April, James Cameron's box office world-beater receives a three-disc set with all the bells and...

Directed by Tristan Loraine and from a relatively new production company, the plot of this diddy sounds like a rehash of a million other things, but considering the output of genre film from the UK now, we know it has some potential. It's currently in pre-production and tentatively slated for 2010.
'A Dark Reflection' is an conspiracy action thriller written by Leofwine Loraine. When a lethal viral outbreak spreads through a small UK town, the government do everything in their power to contain the virus. But where did the virus come from?
More as it comes.

Occasionally I want to go off the beaten track on this blog. So today I’m going to show the correspondence between two composers looking for music gigs on films and me.

Dear Sydney!
My name is Moritz Schmittat - composer for film and TV. We met at the 'Dine&Shine' dinner at the Berlinale Talent Campus. I believe our round was the main course. I had a fabulous evening and I still have your card here.
I just wanted to re-connect and say hello. I recently scored my first feature film which is now playing in over 50 UK cinemas. It's called '31 North 62 East' - a political thriller directed by Tristan Loraine featuring John Rhys-Davies and Marina Sirits. I conducted the orchestral recording sessions myself. Now I am working on my next feature which is...

Last night I was lucky enough to attend the World Premiere of 31 North 62 East, a new movie by ex-pilot turned director, Tristan Loraine. The movie stars John Rhys-Davies, Marina Sirtis, Craig Fairbrass and Heather Peace. The Premiere took place in Horsham, West Sussex for two main reasons. 1) It's where the production company, Fact Not Fiction are based. 2) It's where a lot of the movie was shot.
I live in Surrey so to go to a premiere 20 miles from my house in the lovely countryside town of Horsham was a rare treat. As we approached, we saw the sky scanners lighting up the dark sky with limos outside, a bright red carpet and men dressed in balaclavas with M16's attached to them (don't worry, they were made of rubber!). The Capitol Theatre was decked out with huge posters of the new, British low budget movie but every detail had attention...
