For the self-reliant artists living in the era of instant distribution opportunities, outlets like the Independent Television and Film Festival are necessary to set yourself apart and make some professional contacts in the process. Taking place Sept. 26–28 in Dover, Vt., ITVFest features Web series, indie TV shows, short films, feature films, and panel discussions designed to connect content producers with potential distributors and each other. For its ninth year, ITVFest programmers are ensuring the right people will be in the audience when content makers screen their latest works. Rob Barnett, founder-ceo of Omnivision Entertainment and My Damn Channel, and David Katz, VP at Starz Digital Media—who earlier this year picked up recent Streamy Award winner “The Lizzie Bennet Diaries,” as well as Backstage’s Now Streaming featured Web series “Llama Cop”—will be on-site scouting new content for their respective platforms. Barnett and Katz will also participate in one...

The online video landscape has shifted since My Damn Channel first launched in 2007, and the network/studio is rebranding to reflect its current place in the industry. Founders Rob Barnett and Warren Chao have announced that My Damn Channel is re-launching as Omnivision Entertainment, an entertainment company spread across traditional and digital platforms. The rebranding effort comes six weeks after My Damn Channel announced Videocracy, which will become the studio's first TV program when it debuts on Hln. With the company's profile expanding, Barnett and Chao decided to change its image. “Warren and I both left traditional media to build a major media company focused on the future of entertainment,” said Barnett. “Seven years later, traditional, digital and social media companies are forging powerful partnerships with a united vision to earn passionate fans and build thriving businesses together.” For its first move, Omnivision has partnered with Sara Maria Forsberg, the...

Founders Rob Barnett and Warren Chao use corporate gobbledygook to explain the more traditionally corporate name, saying that it’s a “relaunch” for the digital video producer that reflects the entity’s evolution into “a multi-platform, 360° entertainment company.” Barnett will remain Founder/CEO, but Chao has been elevated to Co-Founder/President of Omnivision from Co-Founder and COO. In addition to the new moniker, the execs said today that they’ve signed Finnish entertainer Sara Maria Forsberg — who developed a popular video “What Languages Sound Like To Foreigners” — and will look for advertising, online, film, TV, theatrical, print and other opportunities. My Damn Channel — sorry, Omnivision — recently agreed to produce a viral video countdown show for Hln (which is also rebranding), and says it “will continue to produce and distribute premium content for screens of all sizes,” including MyDamnChannel.com and the My Damn Channel Comedy Network.

Just ahead of celebrating the seventh birthday of its incorporation this March 2014, My Damn Channel landed a development deal with Hln. The online entertainment studio and distributor of mostly comedic programming is behind Videocracy, a show in which a host and panel will discuss the day’s most exciting social media stories. That premise squarely fits into Executive Vice President and General Manager of Hln, Albie Hecht’s new vision for the cable and satellite television channel as a destination for the social media generation. But while My Damn Channel CEO/Co-Founder, Rob Barnett and company are testing out television, Hecht is crossing platforms, too. The Hln executive is producing a new series for My Damn Channel along with Robert Small dubbed, T:3 Showdown. The “interactive talent competition” debuts Monday, March 10 and will allow viewers to judge three contestants performing three talents in each video. Three new contestants will appear...

Hln is trying to change its image, and it's getting some help from a pair of crafty online video execs. The cable channel formerly known as Headline News has unveiled its upcoming slate, and it includes a series from My Damn Channel's Rob Barnett as well as another from Frederator Studios' Fred Seibert. Barnett will produce Videocracy, in which a host and a panel will discuss the most exciting social media stories of the day. From that blurb, it sounds just like @midnight, the Comedy Central program in which host Chris Hardwick and a panel of comedians riff on social media. Seibert's contribution will take the form of I Can Haz NewsToons, which will feature an assortment of socially relevant animated shorts. Some of these shorts will come from web cartoonists, while others will come from print satirists. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the eclectic slate is part...

Thanks to her substantial role in the fourth season of Arrested Development, Maria Bamford has been fairly buzzworthy of late. Therefore, there's no time like the present for the stand-up comedienne to release her new web series, Ask My Mom, which has debuted all across the web. The series plays off Bamford's usual shtick, as she plays both herself and her mom, a recurring character in her routine. Each episode has Bamford nervously posing a question, with her mom replaying in an honest, frank, and far-too-candid manner. Thus far, two questions have been answered. Ask My Mom is available in three different locations. The show is a part of the My Damn Channel comedy network, making it available on both My Damn Channel's website and its own YouTube channel. Thanks to the multi-channel network's agreement with Blip, Ask My Mom is available there as well, continuing Bamford's habit of exploring interesting distribution platforms.

It's been less than a year since Blip launched its Blip Studios wing, but the site's Newfronts presentation showed that its original content library is very healthy and about to grow even bigger. The big news was Blip's partnership with Ray William Johnson, but the platform's representatives also touted several new and returning series, with a particular focus on creating content suitable for both genders. The event's host was comedian Rob Huebel, and his upcoming Blip series, Mainly Murder, was the first trailer shown. Huebel, who frequently interacted with the crowd and high-fived attendees, also introduced other important folks, such as My Damn Channel co-founder Rob Barnett, who discussed his company's recent partnership with Blip. Several of Blip's upcoming and returning series are targeted at women; My Damn Channel's Grace Helbig, whose audience consists mainly of young women, appeared at the event to discuss the proliferation of her Daily Grace vlog on Blip.

Writer, actor, and director Eric Schaffer hasn't had much success on TV. The series he has created for channels like FX and Showtime have been short-lived, so he's switching things up with his newest effort. Schaffer has decided to move away from the TV medium, releasing Eric Schaffer: Life Coach on the budding My Damn Channel comedy network. Eric Schaffer: Life Coach stars a fictionalized version of its lead, a lazy writer who the series intro calls a "filmmaker, asshole, egomanic, visionary, anarchist, antichrist, son, brother" and much, much more. In the course of his self-centered existence, Schaffer decides the problems of others are his cross to bear. Thus, the Life Coach portion of the title becomes evident, as Schaffer spends the whole first episode decluttering his parents' apartment (all so he can find a few bucks he stashed away in an old soy sauce bottle). The series, which will run for 40 short episodes,...

My Damn Channel recently launched a full-fledged multi-channel comedy network, and it looks as if Mdc's upward move is allowing it to move outside of YouTube, showcasing its talented creators on every corner of the Internet. Two new shows--one of which features vlogger Mark Malkoff--will debut for the Mdc Comedy Network on MSN's video portal. Malkoff's series will be titled The Mark Malkoff Challenge, and will continue his trend of pulling enough stunts to be the David Blaine of online video. In the spirit of his Netflix binging, bus racing, and Bill Murray Stalking, Malkoff will undergo a different challenge every week. Now, when I see a guy cruising through New York City on a big wheel bike, I'll know what's up. Joining Malkoff on MSN will be pro games Brian and Mike, who will create Life: A Gamer's Guide. The viewcounts don't lie. Online video overwhelming means comedy, and as the market grows, comedians and indie TV creators are getting more buyers for their shows and videos. Still the announcement is sure to excite creators of independent web series. "We've always worked with top talent and breaking talent. We always will," CEO Rob Barnett said in an interview. Donnie Hoyle has some company. The depressive image-altering guru’s original web series You Suck at Photoshop was recently resurrected for a third season by My Damn Channel, but the popular program that’s racked up over 40 million views in aggregate and a nod from Time as a topnotch entertainment property is just one of many online originals to join the new media studio’s new upcoming slate. After researching and teaching web television for over three years, I was ironically accepted as a faculty fellow of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences a few weeks ago. The fellowship was an exploration of traditional television and how it is adapting to the changing landscape of television production. About twenty television professors were accepted in all and all of us were shocked to find that television professionals we met were excited by the changes in the entertainment industry, especially the move to online distribution. The reason: television transcends. Television evolved simultaneously to the technology that displayed it: the Crt. Yet, unlike other mass media, the technology is currently disappearing and television, the form, is remaining. Television is now an application on a screen. While television professionals, whether from old media or new media, are excited by the limitless prospects of television creation, television academics are just starting to understand the value.

There’s a lot of talk about money in online video lately. Who’s getting licensing deals, 7-figure advances, funding rounds—yet in the hubbub it’s too easy to take our eyes off the broader context of how the internet is reshaping entertainment. Last night in La, at Celebrate the Web’s screening of hastily-made web series pilots was a welcomed reminder that the independent, cooperative, sure-i-can-help-you-out attitude that underlies this whole creative revolution is alive and well. And that’s a very good thing. Sure, it doesn’t hurt that there was some cash on the line—$500 grants to each of the two overall winning teams—along with a development deal with online comedy network My Damn Channel. But ultimately this was as festival about just getting out there any shooting something, rather than just talking about shooting something. Enough burying the lead. Fox's digital content studio 15Gigs has inked a multi-series online distribution deal with web comedy network My Damn Channel that kicks off with The Iceman Chronicles premiering today. Technically, Iceman had already rolled out YouTube and picked up some strong early reviews. 15Gigs, which came together last summer, has been Fox Television Studios' (Ftvs) measured experiment with short-form original web content. Instead of building out a destination site of its own, it took the strategy of developing series and matching them with appropriate established distribution channels. For the most part this has meant using the 15Gigs YouTube channel as their home base, a key part of their digital playbook. Teaming up with four year-old My Damn Channel is the next play in that book, aligning themselves with a proven brand that has racked up a string of awards for its selective comedy series like You Suck at Photoshop, Wainy Days,...

CraveOnline launched MotoMan, its latest original web series today, that "covers new cars, classic cars and all things car lifestyle. In a nutshell, MotoMan drives cars you can’t." The debut episode (above) waxes auto-philosophical for a few minutes on whether a luxury cars are more about what's under the hood or the logo on top of it. [CraveOnline] Hans Zimmer didn't compose the theme song for The Guild, but what if he did? Brian “Tweex” Arnold mused on this question, coming up with a remixed intro theme song on his site [Tweex]music, combining the beefed up Season 3 theme with Zimmer's Pirates of the Caribbean. He even re-edited a clip from Season 3 with the new intro theme. [TweexMusic] Tubefilter's Jamison Tilsner talked Web TV and Streamy Awards on the Kodak K-Zone stage at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas last week. Joining him on the panel, moderated by Kodak Cmo Jeffrey Hayzlett,...

The fact that Nyu Film — one of the most respected film schools in the country — has taken an interest in web video speaks to the emergence of the medium. As part of a series of panels on internet video and the industry surrounding new media production, I planned and will be moderating a panel on The Business of Online Video including some of new media’s best minds, including… Rob Barnett of My Damn Channel Paul Kontonis of For Your Imagination Aimee Carlson of DailyMotion and Eric Mortenson of Blip.tv The panel will focus on the emerging business around web video shows and how content creators can best navigate the new production-distribution paradigm. It will take place on Monday April 27 at 6Pm at Tisch School of the Arts at 726 Broadway in New York City. Space is limited, but I am told that we can bring a small number of guests.

My Damn Channel, whose strategy we questioned when it launched in July 2007, has since blown us away with some of the best programming on and off the web. How’d they do it? Simple: true talent. CEO Rob Barnett has a knack for discovering and supporting the best. It comes, then, as no surprise then that MyDamnChannel would attract the likes of MTV. Beginning today, a selection of MyDamnChannel original productions will appear on a new channel on Atom.com, MyDamnChannel.Atom.com. First to launch will be a selection of episodes from David Wain’s Wainy Days, a 2008 Webby Award winner for Best Comedy Series. Coming soon are additional series including the viral phenomenon and a three-time Webby winner You Suck At Photoshop, created by Big Fat Brain, and Horrible People, the evil, comic soap opera created by A.D. Miles. An Atom branded destination also debuts today at MyDamnChannel.
