I've been planning on wrapping up my Austin Film Festival content with capsule reviews for some of the short films I saw at this year's festival. However, after reflecting on Veteran's Day I thought it only fitting to give special attention to one short film in particular that I'd not covered in the Aff 2010 Preview: Selected Shorts: Veterans, directed by Miguel Alvarez (Mnemosyne Rising) and funded by a 2006 Texas Filmmakers' Production Fund grant. With so many great short films at Aff this year, Veterans hadn't originally made it to the top of my list. However, after subsequent viewings I have to admit that this poignant and somber short film is a "must see." It's a touching story of sacrifices not just made for our country, but for loved ones.
Shot on Super 8 by cinematographer Bear Guerra, Veterans has a home movie film feel but with higher production value and striking visual imagery.

Actor Colin Farrell was involved in a furious bust-up with a photographer at the premiere of his new movie Triage on Saturday.
The star attended a screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada with his sister and personal assistant Claudine.
But the 33 year old took exception when one snapper asked his sibling to step away from her brother's side to allow a clear shot of the actor - and Farrell angrily confronted the photographer.
Joe Alvarez says, "I was just saying, 'Please can everyone clear the carpet, move on'. He took it personal. He said, 'Do not shout at my sister like that, do not ever speak to my sister like that ever'."...

Colin Farrell lost his temper with photographers on the red carpet for the premiere of his latest movie at the Toronto Film Festival. The Irish actor became enraged when the press repeatedly shouted for his sister to move so that they could get a clear shot of the star. Farrell went nose-to-nose with one photographer, and then quickly regained his composure and went about his business. The Irishman, who’s been known to lose his cool in the past, was at the international film festival for the premiere of “Triage,” in which he plays a photojournalist suffering from the psychological effects of war. He arrived at the Elgin Theatre, when photographers began shouting for his entourage to “get off the carpet.” Farrell then angrily approached London-based Joe Alvarez, who was among those yelling at his companions. Alvarez has revealed what happened next, saying: “With celebs you get a lot of hangers-on,...
