[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the 9-1-1 Season 7 premiere “Abandon ‘Ships.”] Listen, if there’s one ‘ship we’re not ready to abandon, it’s Athena (Angela Bassett) and Bobby (Peter Krause), though they do have some things to work out in the 9-1-1 premiere. Fortunately, all is well for Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Karen (Tracie Thoms), as well as Chimney (Kenneth Choi) and Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt)—though multiple people need to tell him that!—and we’re not at all attached to Buck (Oliver Stark) and Eddie’s (Ryan Guzman) love interests, which is a good thing in one case. If there’s been one constant about Latino representation in Hollywood, it’s been the abysmal representation that has barely shifted in decades.
Despite some gains in recent years, a 2019 study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative revealed that underrepresentation and stereotypical roles for U.S.-based Latinx talent are, sadly, still the norm.
Enter Broken English Prods., a fledgling Latinx production company, which hopes to “change the narrative,” in the words of its CEO Christopher Acebo. The new shingle joins Lionsgate’s Pantelion and other companies in addressing the paucity of Latinx films.
Broken English forms part of new entertainment finance company Grandave Capital (Gc), launched by film financier Stanley Preschutti in June, which has boarded projects as a third-party equity investor but has also plowed considerable funding to its new Latinx production arm.
Gc aims to invest some $20 million in up to four Broken English projects a year...

"A party crasher that is out of this world." Quiver Distr. has released an official trailer for an indie horror comedy titled Useless Humans, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Stephen Ohl. This sounds and looks like one of those extra wacky, shoestring budget indie films that is ambitious but actually impressively entertaining. A 30th birthday -- and the survival of mankind -- are left hanging in the balance after a mysterious alien creature crashes the party, forcing four childhood friends to save the night. Starring Josh Zuckerman, Rushi Kota, Davida Williams, Luke Youngblood, Edy Ganem, Maya Kazan, Joey Kern, and Iqbal Theba. This surprisingly looks like some good, stupid fun with a terrible man-in-suit monster and more shenanigans. Might actually be a good time, I want to watch this. Check it out below. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Stephen Ohl's Useless Humans, direct from YouTube:...

Following the success of "Jane The Virgin," which is based on a telenovela, the new film "Ana Maria in Novela Land" follows the magical conundrum of super fan, Ana Maria, who swaps places with her favorite telenovela star, Ariana Tomosa. The film stars Edy Ganem ("Devious Maids") who takes on the roles of both Ana Maria and Ariana Tomosa. In the new clip, we see a very confused and angry Ariana Tomosa who confronts Ana Maria's parents, presumably before realizing that they have switched places. The acting in this clip appears to be very much in the vein of a telenovela, so the film is sure to be a fun watch. Directed by Georgina Garcia Riedel, the film also stars Michael Steger, Luis Guzmán and the late Elizabeth Peña. The film, distributed by Fluency Studios, will open in select theaters today, February 27. Check out the clip below: Read More:...

The mainstream embrace of ABC’s “Ugly Betty” and The CW’s “Jane the Virgin” will hopefully mean that the charming and hilarious telenovela satire “Ana Maria in Novela Land” can find a larger audience beyond the Latino movie ghetto. Starring Edy Ganem (“Devious Maids”) in what should be a star-making turn as both schlubby millennial Ana Maria and hyper-glamorous “gold-digging orphan/whore” Ariana (the protagonist of the fictional “Pasión Sin Limites,” or “Passion Without Limits”), this switching-places comedy warmly and trenchantly sends up the telenovela genre’s swooning melodrama and oversexed-but-prudish contradictions. “Novela Land” begins with a flawless spoof,...

'Devious Maids' Renewed
Devious Maids, created by Marc Cherry, will have a third, 13-episode season, reported The Hollywood Reporter. Cherry will be continuing in his role as Devious Maids’ showrunner and will co-executive produce alongside Ric Scwartzlander and Brian Tanen.
"We are thrilled to be bringing Devious Maids back for another season,” said Lifetime’s executive VP and Gm Rob Sharenow. “Marc Cherry has created a uniquely twisted world that blends his comic wit with devilishly ingenious characters and plot twists.”
Devious Maids’ sophomore season, which wrapped up two months ago, averaged 1.8 million viewers per week. While the viewership was down from the show’s first season, it was enough to keep its status as the No. 1 basic cable program airing Sunday nights at 10 p.m. among women.

Last year, the ratings for Devious Maids started low but grew over the course of the season. Will they keep rising in season two or will they fall? Will this Lifetime series be cancelled, or renewed for season three? Stay tuned.
Devious Maids revolves around a group of Latina maids who work in the Beverly Hills homes of wealthy and powerful families. The large cast includes Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sánchez, Judy Reyes, Edy Ganem, Susan Lucci, Rebecca Wisocky, Tom Irwin, Grant Show, Drew Van Acker, Mariana Klaveno, Brianna Brown, Brett Cullen, Wolé Parks, Mark Deklin, Joanna P. Adler, Colin Woodell, and Dominic Adams.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's chances of staying on the air. The higher the ratings, the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available.

When I began covering Lifetime’s new soap Devious Maids last year, I was every bit the open-minded – albeit conflicted – journalist. The internal debate I was having about the show – about five Hispanic maids – went something like: “Well, there’ll finally be a television show with a primarily Latina cast!” Followed by, “But they’re all maids.” A slew of thoughts ensued, all along the lines of “We Latinas are more than maids – we’re doctors, engineers, bankers and more,” and then “maids are people too and that’s how many immigrants earn their start in this country.”
It went on like that,...

The ladies of Lifetime’s hit series Devious Maids are back – and by the looks of a new poster for season 2, with plenty of oh-so-juicy secrets.
The cast – Latina actresses Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Edy Ganem and Judy Reyes – are pictured striking a pose in slinky white outfits with letters spelling out the word “secrets.” And it looks like those secrets may require some intense damage control, as the tag “Deliciously Dirty” hints there’s going to be some serious cleaning up – and cleaning house – this season.
The poster will be released nationwide on March 17, and the season...
