Exclusive: Emmy Award winner Ben Schwartz has joined the 20th Century feature Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice as part of the ensemble cast, which includes Vince Vaughn, James Marsden, Eiza Gonzalez, Jimmy Tatro and Arturo Castro.

Keanu Reeves has long been a fan-favorite hero in Tinseltown, famous for portraying stoic, morally upright characters in critically acclaimed flicks such as John Wick and The Matrix. Nonetheless, much to the surprise of his fans, the Beirut-born actor, 59, has now taken on a new role that differs from his usual heroic persona: that of the anti-hero (Shadow) in the forthcoming Sonic 3 film. Multiple sources are attesting that Reeves will resume voice acting following his role as Bruce Wayne / Batman in Jared Stern’s DC League of Super-Pets (2022).

For better or worse, the next big bet in Hollywood right now is video games. "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" is the biggest film of 2023 so far. These are curious days for feature animation. Netflix scaled back its plans in the arena, while two years of releases straight to Disney+ during Covid and under Bob Chapek seem to have seriously devalued the once unstoppable Disney/Pixar animation empire. Universal, though, enjoyed one of the biggest hits ever with the near 1 billion juggernaut “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and also landed the year’s second-biggest animated release with “The Bad Guys.”

Still, animation at the box office and animation in the awards race are two very different things, and it’s unlikely that Academy voters will be checking the grosses as they review the 27 qualifying films in this year’s Best Animated Feature race at the Oscars.

Those 27 include movies from big, traditional studios like Disney/Pixar, Universal’s DreamWorks Animation, Warner Bros. and 20th Century (now part of Disney) – but also a handful of international productions from GKids,...

In the early days of the Academy’s animated feature Oscar, there were questions as to whether enough films would qualify each year for the award to be given. Not anymore! This year sees a record number of contenders across a wide variety of genres, styles and audiences, from serious, adult-targeted films (like “Charlotte” and “Eternal Spring”) to boffo offerings from Hollywood’s top toon studios — and that doesn’t even count such anime franchise sensations as “One Piece Film: Red” and “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which didn’t submit but further illustrate the vitality of the form.

The pair have launched production company Antigravity Academy, which will develop and produce movies, television, theater and short-form content from and about people from historically excluded communities.

An animated adventure containing both talking animals and popular superheroes was always going to be a big money-maker, and so it has proved with DC League of Super-Pets, which went straight to the top spot at the US box office this weekend. It’s easy to see why – written and directed by veterans of the Lego movies, the film delivers fun, fast-paced superhero action with knowing humour that caters to both adults and children alike.

The story centres on Krypto the Super-Dog (voiced by Dwayne Johnson), who came to Earth with baby Superman (John Krasinski) and now fights crime alongside his owner, as well as adopting the glasses-wearing secret identity of Bark Kent.

Warner Bros animation has eclipsed holdover US studio titles such as Minions: The Rise Of Gru and Thor: Love And Thunder.

DC League of Super-Pets could have benefited from a sharper bite.

The animated superhero pic, from Warner Bros. and DC, opened on the lower end of expectations at the North American box office with an estimated 23 million. On the bright side, the pic had no trouble winning the weekend.

League of Super-Pets — which had hoped to clear 25 million or more in its domestic launch — is yet another test for the family theatrical marketplace as the box office emerges from the pandemic. The marketing campaign certainly doesn’t lack for attention, with voice stars Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart embarking on a publicity blitz.

When it came time to voice their roles in DC League of Super-Pets, stars such as Kevin Hart had to get creative.

The film was made in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, when rules were so strict that voice talent recorded their parts in isolation without the aid of an audio engineer on site to set them up. Super-Pets stars Dwayne Johnson as Superman’s dog, Krypto, and Hart as Batman’s pooch, Ace — who must team up to save their superhero pals.

Producer Hiram Garcia recalls watching talent record their parts over Zoom, after being sent recording equipment to operate themselves. Hart stood out thanks to a sound booth he made out of a few mattresses and blankets in a hotel room.

New family movie DC League of Super-Pets is opening on the lower end of expectations with an estimated weekend debut in the 23 million range.

The animated superhero pic, which has a voice cast that includes Dwayne Johnson, pulled in an estimated 9.3 million-plus on Friday, including 2.2 million in Thursday previews. Audiences bestowed the movie with an A- CinemaScore.

From Warner Bros. and DC, League of Super-Pets also features the voices of Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski and Keanu Reeves, among others, and marks the theatrical directorial debut of Jared Stern.

League of Super-Pets is yet another test for the family box office in the pandemic era and had hoped to clear 25 million or more in its domestic launch. Warners is counting on the movie, which is playing in 4,315 theaters, having strong legs throughout August.

The animated film features the voice talent of Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart as the lovable and loyal dog companions to Superman, Batman and the like. The film is projected for a 25 million opening this weekend.

For some comparisons, Universal’s animated “The Bad Guys” this spring made 1.2 million in its preview screenings and opened to 24 million, and it has ultimately made 97 million in its run. Johnson’s “Jungle Cruise,” which opened this same weekend last year but also opened in the midst of the pandemic, brought in roughly 2.7 million in its Thursday previews before opening to 35 million. And WB’s “The Lego Movie 2” in 2019 made approximately 2.1 million in its Thursday shows and opened to 34 million.

The summer continues to wind down faster than usual with the last of the major tentpoles (Thor: Love and Thunder) entering its fourth weekend and just two significant releases left (DC League of Super-Pets this weekend and Bullet Train next weekend). The overall box office risks falling under 100 million for the first time since May, though it may be able to stay above the nine-figure line for another two weeks before likely falling under until October, if not November. This is a disappointing sign after two months where the overall box office was doing a solid job of catching up to the pre-pandemic years.

As superhero movies have grown more convoluted, self-serious and ludicrously expensive, it’s fallen to their animated counterparts to keep the multiverses grounded in actual fun. Think the unserious, self-referential madness of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse or The Lego Batman Movie, a zany, film-length jab at Batman’s relentless darkness, isolation and general emo-ness. DC League of Super-Pets, from Lego Batman writers Jared Stern and John Whittington, takes some similar lighthearted digs at Batman, but he’s a side character to the irresistible stars of the show: man’s best friend, plus some pals. Why can’t animals be super, too?

The 105-minute romp, directed by Stern and Sam Levine, shares with the Lego Batman Movie a deadpan sense of humor, frenetic action, reflexive winks for adults and cartoon harmlessness for kids.

The Warner Bros. animated superhero comedy may not be closing out the month with a bang, but it will at least manage to lead domestic box office charts. Over the weekend, “DC League of Super-Pets” is aiming for 25 million to 30 million when it opens in 4,300 North American theaters, which should be enough to dethrone Jordan Peele’s “Nope” as the No. 1 movie in the country. Peele’s UFO thriller, which opened last weekend to 41 million, is expected to decline by roughly 60 with 15 to 16 million in its sophomore outing.

Of course, this isn’t just any baby and puppy. Warner Bros has released a new trailer for the action-adventure DC animation ‘DC League of Super-Pets’

Krypto the Super-Dog and Superman are inseparable best friends, sharing the same superpowers and fighting crime in Metropolis side by side. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, Krypto must convince a rag-tag shelter pack – Ace the hound, Pb the potbellied pig, Merton the turtle and Chip the squirrel – to master their own newfound powers and help him rescue the superheroes.

On the heels of a successful in-person event that welcomed such stars as Woody Harrelson, Amy Poehler, Liev Schreiber and “Dopesick” creator Danny Strong, the 2022 Sun Valley Film Festival, which ran from March 30 to April 3, announced its juried film award winners.

Best narrative feature film went to “Linoleum,” directed by Colin West. “Holy Emy,” helmed by Araceli Lemos, received a special mention. Ron Howard’s “We Feed People” netted the fest’s audience award.

The winners were announced during the Idaho fest’s annual awards bash, which took place at Whiskey Jacques on Ketchum’s main drag of town, and was hosted by filmmaker Bobby Farrelly and comedian Hayes MacArthur, with a musical performance by the Nude Party.

Voting jury members at the fest included Jo Addy (global film and entertainment director of Soho House), Eric Bress, Trevor Groth (film financier at 30West) and producer Heather Rae.
