If ever a play had good reason to front-load itself with exposition, Good Night, Oscar is it. Once among America’s premiere wits and raconteurs, Oscar Levant has gone the way of many another once-famous wits and raconteurs. Which is to say, he needs lots of exposition.
Good Night, Oscar, the new bio-play by Doug Wright (I Am My Own Wife) starring Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) as Levant, goes a long way in introducing this long-ago talk-show staple to modern audiences. Whether it justifies the effort is considerably less certain.
A talented pianist and occasional second-banana movie actor, Levant is better known today for his frequent talk- and game-show appearances of the 1950s and ’60s, his aptitude for the improvised zinger and no-holds-barred confessional humor making him a sought-after, if controversial, Golden Age presence. Others would follow in his wake – the Gore Vidals and Truman Capotes and Phyllis Newmans, but Levant was first.

ABC has canceled the Shondaland legal drama “For the People” after two seasons, TheWrap has learned.
Set in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (a.k.a. “The Mother Court”), the Shondaland series centered on six talented young lawyers working on opposite sides of the law.
It first debuted as a midseason replacement last year, and has since struggled to gain a foothold in the ratings. The currently airing second season is averaging just shy of three million viewers an episode, with a 0.51 rating among adult viewers under 50, according to Nielsen’s live-plus-same-day numbers.

The Hamptons International Film Festival said today that First Man will be its Saturday centerpiece film, Roma will screen Sunday in the Spotlight section and Alan Alda is the recipient of its 2018 Dick Cavett Artistic Champion Award.
First Man, which just had its world premiere in Venice, stars Ryan Gosling as Neil Armstrong, the first human being to set foot on the moon. Claire Foy and Corey Stoll co-star in the film helmed by Damien Chazelle from Josh Singer’s script; the latter two will be in attendance, festival organizers said.
Roma is Alfonso Cuarón’s first feature since 2013’s Gravity, for which he earned the Academy Award for directing. Inspired by the early 1970s Mexico City, it’s a semi-autobiographical look at a middle-class family making a life for itself amongst political turbulence and patriarchal rule. Producer Gabriela Rodriguez will be in attendance.

Shondaland drama For the People has been renewed for a second season.
The series, from creator/executive producer Paul Williams Davies, debuted March 13 as a midseason replacement in ABC’s very challenging Tuesday 10 Pm slot, which has claimed a slew of short-lived drama series, and survived. It had a somewhat rocky road before launch, with production halted in September for additional script working after Britt Robertson and Jasmin Savoy Brown were recast as the leads. They took over for the pilot’s stars Britne Oldford and Lyndon Smith, respectively.

The verdict is in — and it’s (surprisingly) good: ABC’s For the People has been renewed for Season 2.
For the People, which has struggled in the ratings, stars Britt Robertson (The Secret Circle, Life Unexpected) as Sandra Bell, a lawyer who regularly found herself in the Federal Court of New York, also known as ‘The Mother Court.”
The show’s large ensemble cast also includes Hope Davis, Ben Shenkman, Jasmin Savoy, Susannah Flood, Wesam Keesh, Rege-Jean Page, Ben Rappaport, Anna Deavere Smith and Vondie Curtis-Hall. The show’s executive-producing team included Shondaland heavy hitters Shonda Rhimes, Betsy Beers and Tom Verica.
