Friday Night Dinner knows the truth about families. Not that they bicker, mock and childishly compete – sitcom’s known about that since Steptoe & Son. No, Friday Night Dinner knows that families aren’t made up of people; they’re made up of odd habits.
Did you ever invite a friend home from school and pray that none of your family’s Weird Stuff would leak out into the playground the next day? That your mum’s special word for a fart wouldn’t follow you down the corridor into Maths, and the dinner hall wouldn’t echo with the high-pitched voice in which you all talk to the dog? Perhaps you hoped against hope that your brother wouldn’t be wearing his comedy Viz Buster Gonad t-shirt, that no-one would see the wooden clothes peg holding open the choke on your dad’s car, and that nobody would call...

“Most people aren’t wet for trauma like we are,” Josie (Kat Sadler) tells her sister Billie (Lizzie Davidson) in the pilot of Hulu’s “Such Brave Girls,” as they scroll through the social media of the girl Billie’s ex is now seeing. “She’s ‘live laugh love.’ We’re…death, silence, hate.”
While it’s arguably the thesis of Hulu’s new series, produced by A24 and Various Artists Ltd., “Such Brave Girls” has a lot of laughs and a lot to love. Sadler created, executive produced, and stars in the gloriously uncomfortable comedy as the perpetually depressed Josie, on a search to find herself with the often misguided help of Billie and their mother Deb (Louise Brealey). Simon Bird directed all six episodes, which premiered on BBC Three in November.

It was subsequently pulled from linear schedules but remains on the streaming platform. She also produced short form series Peck’Eds with writer/performer Soph Galustian for BBC Three.
She will join the BBC Studios division early next year that makes the likes of Inside No. 9, Good Omens, Trying and Black Ops and will report to head Josh Cole in the newly-created role.

Because the fall festivals had fewer actors and writers on hand due to the strikes, more independent movies came into the season looking for buyers. Below is the running list of movies that have found buyers.

Those who enjoy the Everyone Else Burns series don't have to worry about it being cancelled right now. The show was renewed for a second season before even the first episode had aired. That being said, The CW's new management looks closely at how well a show is performing in the ratings and has dropped several low-rated shows mid-season. Could that happen to Everyone Else Burns? Stay tuned.

For nearly two decades, The CW wasn’t TV’s most popular network — outside of carefully curated demographics — but it might have been the network most confident in its brand. Shows on The CW looked and felt like they were shows that could exist only on The CW.
Currently, I struggle to find the proper analogy to describe the grab bag of acquisitions that fill The CW’s schedule since the network was acquired by the Nexstar Media Group.
Is the process of surfing through the CW slate, trying to guess a program’s origins, like taking a road trip with the family and playing the license plate game? “There’s New Mexico! There’s British Columbia! How did New Brunswick get all the way over here?”
Or is The CW’s strategy of picking up motley offerings that weren’t on the radar of Netflix or Hulu or Max...

All American is the only original The CW scripted series to appear on the upcoming season’s roster. Walker, which was recently renewed for a shorter season, will return midseason. And the network still hasn’t decided what to do about Gotham Knights, All American: Homecoming, or Superman & Lois.

Warning: this article contains plot details for Everyone Else Burns
‘We’ll meet the congregation, we’ll pray, shelter, and eventually bury the corpses of the sinful dead. It’s going to be very special.’
These are the words mum Fiona uses to describe the plan to her terrified daughter in the opening scenes of Everyone Else Burns, as dad David takes them on what the children don’t yet realise is a middle-of-the-night apocalypse training exercise rather than the real thing.
As sitcom openings go, it throws us straight into the action, and while the scene is disappointingly lacking in decent jokes, Channel 4’s latest comedy confidently establishes the Lewis family’s life in a super-strict apocalyptic religious cult.
Such speedy exposition involves some heavy-handedness as we meet pompous patriarch David, long-suffering wife Fiona (Kate O’Flynn), their anxious teenager Rachel and apocalypse-hungry young son Aaron (Harry Connor). The...

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has explained how the studio will address one of the most common complaints among viewers.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) now reaching “Phase Five”, the sprawling superhero franchise has grown to encompass 30 films, as well as several TV series.
This glut of content has led to fears of “superhero fatigue”, and speculation that viewers are starting to lose interest in Marvel films.
Speaking to The Movie Business Podcast, Feige spoke about the ways the studio intends to stave off superhero fatigue in the studio’s many forthcoming projects.
He said that there exist “80 years of the most interesting, emotional, groundbreaking stories that have been told in the Marvel comics” for the film franchise to draw upon.
“But another way to do that is adapting them into different genres and what types of movies we want to make,” he said. “[I remember] sitting at USC, and sitting...

Dancing on Ice fans are highlighting a discrepancy regarding the first eliminated celebrity.
On Sunday (22 January), the second selection of stars performed one week after the first five made their debut.
It was revealed that, from last night’s celebrities, former footballer and Gladiators host John Fashanu received the lowest number of votes, and was in the dreaded skate-off alongside Love Island winner Ekin Su CülcüloÄ.lu, who found herself in the same situation the week before.
Both performed their routines once again, with the judges opting to send Fashanu home.
However, viewers found this “unfair” as CülcüloÄ.lu had an entire extra week to practise her performance, knowing she was in the bottom two. Fashanu, meanwhile, had approximately five minutes.
The show’s co-host Holly Willoughby said she was “gutted” by the decision as skater Christopher Dean said “nobody has improved more since bootcamp” than Fashanu.

This is why I don’t do interviews,” says Simon Bird. “I regret everything I say.” I’ve just asked the 38-year-old star of The Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner about Rishi Sunak. In his 2021 mid-pandemic stand-up special Debrief, Bird suggested that Sunak, then chancellor of the Exchequer, was “personally culpable for gross negligence manslaughter”, branding his Eat Out to Help Out scheme an “act of terrorism”. “There was definitely an element of comic hyperbole there,” he tells me, somewhat pragmatically. “I don’t feel like it’s my place really to get into politics. Although, I mean, the reason you’re bringing it up is because I literally did get into politics... I’ve totally contradicted myself. But how do I feel about him being prime minister? Well, I don’t think I’ll be voting for him. And I’ll probably leave it at that.”

British broadcaster Channel 4 has ordered an apocalyptic comedy series starring Friday Night Dinner and The Inbetweeners star Simon Bird.
The ad-supported, public service broadcaster has handed the six-part order to Jax Media, the company behind series including Netflix’s Russian Doll and HBO Max’s Search Party, and Universal International Studios, the London-led global production arm of the NBCU studio.
Everyone Else Burns explores life in a hyper-religious community and asks: how does an idiosyncratic family navigating modern day life protect themselves from eternal hell fire?
Bird stars alongside Kate O’Flynn, Amy James-Kelly, Lolly Adefope, Al Roberts, Soph Galustian, Harry Connor, Ali Khan, Lloyd Griffith, Kadiff Kirwan, Morgana Robinson, Arsher Ali, Liam Williams, Kath Hughes, and Seb Cardinal.
It is a coming-of-age comedy about a Mancunian family and the puritanical Christian sect they are devoted to. Will patriarchal David Lewis ever ascend the church ranks and become an Elder?...

Formula 1 Finale Goes Terrestrial
Sky has inked a deal with Channel 4 for Sky Sports’ live coverage of the Formula 1 season finale to also air on the free to air channel this Sunday. Lewis Hamilton stands on the brink of history – victory in Abu Dhabi would clinch an unprecedented eighth world title. The Brit is currently on equal points with adversary Max Verstappen. Sky is billing the race as ‘Lewis v Max: Decider in the Desert’. Earlier this year Channel 4 struck a lucrative deal with Amazon to share the streamer’s coverage of the US Open featuring Brit Emma Raducanu and the broadcaster also secured the Cricket World Cup final from Sky. The F1 deal is likely to be a similarly costly pact. Stephen van Rooyen, EVP & CEO UK & Europe Sky said: “Sunday’s Grand Prix is one of the biggest sporting events in the last decade, and could...

Friday Night Dinner is ten.
That’s ten years of crimble-crumble, humble bumbling, manic misunderstandings, and more lovely bits of squirrel than you could shake a dead fox at. For thirty-seven Friday nights across six glorious seasons the Goodman family – shirtless dad, Martin (Paul Ritter); long-suffering but ever hopeful mum, Jackie (Tamsin Greig), and their visiting prank-wanker sons Adam (Simon Bird) and Jonny (Tom Rosenthal) – served up a banquet of laughs to a hungry nation, ably assisted by chronically persistent, reality-adjacent next-door-neighbour, Jim (Mark Heap) and his faithful dog, Wilson, and a host of other regulars and monstrously memorable one-offs besides.
In celebration, then, of one of the most smartly-observed, perfectly-cast comedies of recent years, in chronological order, we count down ten of the show’s best.
The Sofabed Series 1, Episode 1
Most first episodes – nay entire first series – of new comedies can be scattergun. Maybe the characters haven’t quite coalesced,...
