This isn’t going to be like most of the useless reviews of Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake that you’ve already seen. It has been a long enough time since I have seen the original Oldboy, so that I can review this film on its own standing, and not spend the bulk of the review convincing you that the original is a better film. We’re not here to talk about the original, so why waste people’s time? I will make one mention of the original film, but not for the sake of comparison. It’s more to pose a question. Why did Spike Lee bother with remaking such a recognizable cult film, if he gave as little of a fuck about the original property as his take on the film suggests that he did? I’m not a person that hates remakes. You have plenty of websites...

Scarlet Fry continues his efforts at horror anthology filmmaking after building a mixed reputation amongst genre fans for the microbudget productions Nightmare Alley and Junkfood Horrorfest. Indy horror writerdirector David Sabal joins him (Blown 2005) together with newcomer Jacob ONeal in this latest attempt. Yet even as Indy productions go the cast is pretty thin. Rob Edwards is one of the three in a cast of 32 with even modest filmacting experience. This one was produced on a shoestring budget but so was the original Evil Dead. We shall see how it holds up.

An Sov offering from Chemical Burn Entertainment, Junkfood Horrorfest (2007) is a no-budget anthology directed by Brian Crow. Written by Brian Crow and Walter Reuther (Scarlet Fry), the movie opens with a female junkie looking for a fix but instead getting a video cassette from her dealer. In a fit of rage, the junkie goes back to the dealer with a crowbar and beats him to death. The blood-soaked junkie then finds a friend and asks if he wants to watch a movie. The dealer is unforgettable but the junkie is played by Calico Cooper, daughter of shock rocker Alice Cooper. This intro leads the viewer into six horror shorts tied together by quick vignettes involving Scarlet Fry as a redneck cannibal complete with a mask made of skin (a la Ed Gein) and a female victim tied to a tree in the background, awaiting her fate.

Pretorious Productions presents us with Scarlet Fry’s Nightmare Alley, an anthology of seven ghoulish tales filmed in “Grind-o-Scope” and hosted by Scarlet Fry himself (director Walter Ruehter in a wizard costume). This micro budget Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow-inspired anthology starts off with a “Prelude” which has a couple of metal heads talking about concerts who meet up with a homeless man who asks them for a cigarette and gives them a comic book entitled “Nightmare Alley” in return. The homeless man quickly turns out to be a psychopath who pulls out a knife and stabs the one guy to death and the other runs off with the comic until he stops at a dumpster and has his head removed from his shoulders by someone or something inside the dumpster, a scenario similar to a scene in the comic book he was just reading.

For this go around in our Faces of Indie Horror Month, I spoke to director Walter Ruether about his just released Nightmare Alley. I wanted to highlight someone that's just about indie as it gets in the horror field. Here's what he had to say:
For those unfamiliar with you, who are you and what are you all about?
Well my real name is Walter Ruether (aka Scarlet Fry). To date I have done three anthology films, two in which have been distributed. My latest film Nightmare Alley comes out on DVD August 10th. You can pre order it right now on Amazon, Borders, or Walmart just about anywhere.
You've acted and directed, what made you want to get involved with horror?
I've always loved horror. The only reason I ever acted and started to make films was due to my love for the genre. I've acted in several films...
