As the European Film Market starts to unwind, the verdict is already in: Even if global economics are rocky, buyers are back and on the lookout. This week, dealmaking has been happening on both star-driven packages as well as arthouse and foreign-language movies.
In a sign that the theatrical business is rebounding, Sony just scooped a pair of splashy packages: “Materialists,” Celine Song’s follow up to “Past Lives,” and “Big Bold Beautiful Journey” starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell. Another hot package, David Mackenzie’s heist thriller “Fuze,” headlined by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, is also close to selling. Movies competing at the Berlin Film Festival are also expected to secure U.S. deals, notably “La Cocina” starring Rooney Mara, and opening night movie “Small Things Like These” with Cillian Murphy.

For most of those involved in the film pre-sales business, the virtual Pre-Cannes Screenings, running June 21-25, is the main event, with the in-person Cannes festival and market in July almost a sideshow. The mood of those approaching this month’s bazaar is mostly upbeat, but with a note of sober caution.

London-based film sales and financing house Embankment Films has closed a major international deal for “Joyride,” starring Olivia Colman, who is Oscar nominated for Florian Zeller’s “The Father,” another of Embankment’s titles. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has bought “Joyride” for the world, excluding North America and U.K.
The deal comes as Embankment – led by Tim Haslam and Hugo Grumbar – amps up its pre-sales slate, with the recent addition of Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern to the cast of Zeller’s “The Son,” which sees Zeller reuniting with “The Father” co-writer Christopher Hampton, and news that Helen Mirren will play Israel’s legendary Prime Minister Golda Meir in “Golda,” directed by Oscar winner Guy Nattiv, and produced by BAFTA winner Michael Kuhn (“Florence Foster Jenkins”).

Bleecker Street has won domestic rights to “Military Wives,” a feel-good comedy with Kristin Scott Thomas, Variety has confirmed.
The pact is one of the first to emerge from a slow market at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. “The Full Monty” filmmaker Peter Cattaneo directed “Military Wives,” the true story of a group of women who form a choir while their husbands are serving in Afghanistan. What starts as a diversion to distract themselves from negative thoughts about their spouses soon propels them to the center of a media frenzy and global movement.
In her review for Variety, Amy Nicholson called the film a “ballad to female unity,” adding, “though their husbands are on a dangerous six-month deployment, the women of this charmer about a camp choir find a reason to sing.”

Exclusive: Bleecker Street is at the altar for U.S. rights to the Toronto Film Festival acquisitions title Military Wives, the Peter Cattaneo-directed film that stars Kristin Scott Thomas, Sharon Horgan and Jason Flemyng. Cattaneo is best known for The Full Monty, and this one also has a feel-good element to it. Pic tells the true story of a band of women who form a choir on a military base while their partners are away serving in Afghanistan. What starts as a diversion becomes more than that, and the unexpected bonds of friendship between the women transform their lives and help overcome their fears for loved ones in combat.
Several distributors circled the picture, which will get a proper theatrical release after a slew of festival trade reviews said it deserved one. The deal will be a shot in the arm for a festival whose acquisitions marketplace has been off to a slow start.

As Harvey Weinstein faces accusations from more than 100 women and a rape trial that could send him to prison for 25 years, directors, writers, and producers jockey for position: Who will be the first to prepare adaptations of his demise? He sparked an episode of “Law & Order: Svu” that aired earlier this year, but that only scratches the surface.
Of course, news headlines spur plenty of quickly announced films that never get made. Revolution Studios touted “Fan Interference” the week Steve Bartman’s foul ball catch kept the Cubs from the 2003 World Series, while Spike Lee pledged to direct a James Brown biopic for Paramount Pictures and Imagine Entertainment just one day after the soul legend’s death in 2006. However, a couple of these Weinstein undertakings are very much in the works, with one only months away.
Here, we assess the prospective Weinstein-inspired projects to date, from most to least likely.
