Twenty-seven years after the release of the the slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) and twenty-six years after the follow-up I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (watch that one Here), Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. might be reprising the roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson in a new sequel… but we still don’t know for sure. This new sequel was announced thirteen months ago, and even though it was said at the time that Hewitt and Prinze were in talks to return, Prinze later said that no one had been in contact with him about it yet. Hewitt said she would 100% be on board if an offer came her way – and even though she recently told Entertainment Tonight she couldn’t confirm but wouldn’t deny that she’d be back for the new sequel, she also revealed that...

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is on board to direct the next installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) writing the screenplay. We don’t yet know if the original cast will be back for the new movie, but that’s something Jennifer Love Hewitt is refusing to deny at this point in time.
The actress told Entertainment Tonight over the weekend, when asked if Julie James will be returning in the upcoming sequel to the ’90s hit, “I can’t confirm but I won’t deny.”
Jennifer Love Hewitt notes in the same interview that she hasn’t yet read the script for the film, but her comments do generally seem to suggest she’s very much on board. We expect the next I Know What You Did Last Summer movie will mix new characters and legacy characters,...

Thirteen months have already gone by since it was announced that the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer (watch it Here) was getting a new sequel with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) set to direct from a screenplay by Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) and Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to reprise the roles of Julie James and Ray Bronson. We haven’t heard much about the project since then, except when Prinze said he hadn’t actually gotten an offer yet and Hewitt said she would gladly come back for another sequel. There’s no word on when or if this sequel will be going into production – but during a recent interview with Collider, McKendrick did talk about making her pitch, collaborating with Robinson, and her reason for pursuing the job.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Writer Teases Upcoming Sequel; A Slasher for the Social Media Age?
As we learned last year, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) is on board to direct the next installment in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise for Sony, with Leah McKendrick (M.F.A.) on board to write the screenplay. We don’t yet know if the original cast will be back, but the film had been originally announced as a legacy sequel of sorts.
Speaking with Collider this week, writer Leah McKendrick remained pretty tight lipped about her I Know What You Did Last Summer plans, but she did provide some low-key insights.
McKendrick told the outlet, “…no spoilers, but I will say that I think if you’re an Og fan like me and you, I think you’re gonna be happy. I think you’re gonna get it.”
She also teased a social media aspect to the upcoming sequel, something that of course wasn’t present in the original movies because,...

It was reported back in February that both Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. were “in talks” to return for an I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel from Sony Pictures, but Freddie Prinze Jr. called that report into question just one month later. According to the actor, he hadn’t actually been offered anything at all – at the time, at least.
So what’s going on here? Is Sony actually even developing a sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer? And if so, are Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt even interested?
Well, in a new interview with the podcast Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum, Jennifer Love Hewitt made it clear that she’d love to reprise the role of Julie James one more time.

It's doubtful that when Lois Duncan published the slow-burn mystery "I Know What You Did Last Summer" for young adult readers, she predicted it would become the basis for a horror movie franchise over 20 years later. That, however, is precisely what happened — much to the chagrin of junior high English teachers everywhere. Written by the now legendary teen horror screenwriter Kevin Williamson, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was written years before it finally hit production, but after the massive success of "Scream" in 1996, producer Erik Feig knew the best course of action was getting another Williamson slasher into theaters.
Using Duncan's novel as a loose basis, "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is about four friends named Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Ray, and Barry (Ryan Phillippe) who after partying on the Fourth of July after high school graduation, hit a person in a drunk driving accident.

When people think of Jim Gillespie’s I Know What You Did Last Summer, they usually consider it a solid slasher. It certainly had an engaging lead cast—Jennifer Love Hewitt, Freddie Prinze Jr., Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe—and a script from Scream creator himself, Kevin Williamson. It even spawned an Amazon Prime spinoff series and is being featured as part of a “High School Horror” category on the Criterion Channel.
But that’s not the film this article is about. This is about the 1998 sequel that has a less positive reputation: Danny Cannon’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, which brought back Hewitt and Prinze Jr., but not Gillespie and Williamson. A lot of people tend to think of it as a lesser follow-up that is best left forgotten.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson made her directorial debut with the romantic comedy Someone Great (2019). The 92-minute film was distributed by Netflix as an original film and officially released on April 19, 2019. Although the movie’s story, written by its director, isn’t exactly original, it stands out for its charm, relatability, and incredible cast. Someone Great is perfect for romantic comedy audiences looking for a movie to watch with friends. It’s a perfect blend of both genres, as its comedy helps dilute the romance theme. Someone Great is centered around heartbreak, friendship, and the strength to let go and move on. Here’s...

While Hollywood still has a long way to go in supporting queer stories and storytellers, we’re living in a relative golden age of LGBTQ cinema compared to what has come before. Netflix has not always chosen to support the LGBTQ community in their business decisions, but the streamer has played a major role in increasing the visibility of queer characters and storylines in both film and TV, and in supporting queer creators in telling stories.
As we celebrate Pride month and beyond, let’s take a look at some of the best LGBTQ movies Netflix currently has on offer. If you’re looking for a queer film to watch—satirically funny or devastatingly earnest, heart-stoppingly romantic or casually queer—try one of the many excellent and diverse options below.

Freddie Prinze Jr. might be considering a return to the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” franchise, but the star doesn’t have many fond memories of making the original slasher flick.
In a recent interview with Too Fab, the “She’s All That” star called the making of the 1997 movie — one of his first major screen credits — a “miserable” experience that almost caused him to quit acting. Specifically, Prinze said his issues stemmed from clashes with the director Jim Gillespie, who wanted to cast Jeremy Sisto, then best known for “Clueless,” but was pushed to hire Prinze by the studio and screenwriter Kevin Williamson.
“It’s not that we weren’t on the same page, I knew what the correct choices were for the Ray character. He wanted a different actor, a really good actor named Jeremy Sisto, who I know and I like and respect very, very much,...

Freddie Prinze Jr. has recalled being “miserable” on the shoot of 1997 slasher hit I Know What You Did Last Summer, saying he “almost quit the movie” and “was just going to quit the business.”
This was Prinze Jr’s first major Hollywood film and launched his career, but he says he clashed with the director, Jim Gillespie. Appearing in a video interview with TooFab to promote his new podcast That Was Pretty Scary, Prinze Jr said, “There was no passive aggressiveness — which I hate — (the director) was very direct in the fact that, ‘I don’t want you in this movie,’ So when that’s your first job and you hear those words, it just wrecks you, man. It just wrecks you.”
He added, “It was very difficult waking up in the morning – or in the afternoon, because we shot a lot of nights – and go to work with the right attitude.

Freddie Prinze Jr. marked the launch of his new horror movie podcast “That Was Pretty Scary” by talking to TooFab about one of his own seminal horror films, the 1997 teen slasher classic “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Prinze Jr., who co-hosts the podcast with Jon Lee Brody, said making the movie was a miserable experience because of director Jim Gillespie, who the actor said was “such an asshole” to him on set. Alleged tension between the two started because Gillespie wanted to cast Jeremy Sisto in the role of Ray Bronson but the studio and screenwriter Kevin Williamson wanted Prinze Jr. instead.
“I’ll give the man this, I think his name is Jim, he made no bones about it,” Prinze Jr. said of the director. “There was no passive aggressiveness — which I hate — he was very direct in the fact that, ‘I don’t want you in this movie.

Announced back in February of this year, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) will be directing a brand new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel for Sony Pictures, with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. both said to be in talks to reprise their roles from the original two slasher movies. But let’s hold that thought for just a second.
Speaking with TooFab last week, Freddie Prinze Jr. makes it clear that he hasn’t actually been offered a role in the new movie. And that means he certainly hasn’t signed on to star.

As Mindy Meeks-Martin wisely observed in last year’s Scream, “You can't just reboot a franchise from scratch anymore – the fans won't stand for it!” And since the Child’s Play and Black Christmas reboots haven’t fared nearly as well as ‘legacyquels’ like Scream and David Gordon Green’s Halloween trilogy, you’ll see she’s got a point. Clearly Sony agrees too, as it’s now planning to resurrect its own '90s slasher franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer with the original cast in tow.

I know what we're doing next summer – or at least, sometime soon. The teen slasher "I Know What You Did Last Summer" is reportedly the next big horror saga to get the legacy sequel treatment, according to Deadline, and we might even be able to catch some of the original film's characters back in action.
The outlet reports that "Do Revenge" director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is on board to direct the sequel for Sony, with both Freddie Prinze Jr. and Jennifer Love Hewitt in talks to reprise their roles from the 1997 film. This is far from the first time the story of a group of guilty teens being haunted by a hook-handed man has been revisited: the original was followed up by two sequels, and a now-canceled Prime Video series re-adapted the 1973 Lois Duncan novel in 2021.

This is far from the first time the story of a group of guilty teens being haunted by a hook-handed man has been revisited: the original was followed up by two sequels, and a now-canceled Prime Video series re-adapted the 1973 Lois Duncan novel in 2021.

Sony Pictures is moving forward with another sequel for the teen horror franchise I Know What You Did Last Summer, with Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to return, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The project, which dips into the late ’90s nostalgia, is in the earliest stages of development, and talent deals have yet to be fully hammered out, according to sources. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who co-wrote Thor: Love and Thunder and directed Netflix’s Do Revenge, is on board to direct the follow-up to the 1997 slasher film in which four friends are hunted by a murderer after they cover up an accident in which someone was killed.
The original version, which starred Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Prinze and was scripted by Scream scribe, Kevin Williamson, grossed 125 million.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is calling out the “backwards way of thinking” by some Marvel fans.
The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alum addressed the gendered approach to superheroes onscreen today after “Captain Marvel” and “Ms. Marvel” were review-bombed by trolls ahead of release.
“Genre is where women can really succeed and hold an audience,” Gellar told The Guardian. “Every time a Marvel movie tries to do a female cast, it just gets torn apart. Unfortunately, audiences weren’t as accepting.”
She added, “There’s still this mentality of ‘the male superhero,’ this very backwards way of thinking.”
While Gellar noted that she will not reprise her iconic role of Buffy, the “Wolf Pack” star addressed the controversial experience working with Joss Whedon and other showrunners in the ’90s and early 2000s.
“There’s not a day goes by where you don’t pick up a trade magazine and hear about some...

Few producers have the staying power of Anthony Bregman. From his early 1990s start as an assistant at Good Machine, he rode the wave of an independent film boom, producing “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” “Foxcatcher,” “Enough Said” and other acclaimed features. After co-founding This Is That with Ted Hope and Anne Carey in 2002, he formed Likely Story with Stefanie Azpiazu in 2006, establishing ongoing partnerships with auteurs like Nicole Holofcener, John Carney and Charlie Kaufman.
In another landmark achievement, Sundance selected three Likely Story features for its 2023 lineup, Bregman’s largest number of Park City premieres in any year. This year's "Thor: Love and Thunder" brought the titular Asgardian warrior back for his first solo outing since 2017's "Thor: Ragnarok." Helmed by acclaimed, award-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi, the film received mixed reactions but was praised for cutting loose and being a lighthearted addition to the Thor franchise. The film had multiple running gags, screaming goats, epic superhero catchphrases, and saw Thor as a Zeus fanboy. After a dark chapter of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was a welcome change.
There's endless humor injected into the story, a credit to Waititi's near-chaotic, improvisational style of directing, which encouraged a collaborative process between actors ... but also required throwing out the script. Turns out, Waititi is open to making changes on filming days that can better serve the movie.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is one of the best TV shows of all time, but by this point, the Joss Whedon series is as infamous as it is famous. The seven-season coming-of-age series is about finding family and support as much as it is about slaying vamps, so it's always hard to reconcile the show fans loved with the hypocritical behaviors apparently on display on set.
In the years since the show has ended, several actors and colleagues have spoken up about alleged mistreatment from Whedon. Charisma Carpenter, who played mean girl Cordelia, released a statement alleging that the series writer-creator was "casually cruel" to her on several occasions, especially with regards to her pregnancy. Whedon's ex-wife Kai Cole also penned a blog post for The Wrap calling the writer, who was lauded as a groundbreaking feminist voice of television, a hypocrite for hiding "multiple affairs and a number of...

Debate continues over why Bros, the first LGBTQ romantic comedy to get a studio release, didn’t have better luck at the box office and what this says about the market for comedies, particularly those featuring queer themes. While it’s unclear whether the Billy Eichner-starring film would have made a bigger splash on a streamer, one movie that recently proved streaming projects can quickly attract a fan base among the LGBTQ community was Do Revenge, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s high school comedy about Camila Mendes’ fallen queen bee befriending Maya Hawke’s newcomer as they scheme to take down each other’s nemesis.

The phrase "Do Revenge" may not be grammatically correct, but when a movie is this entertaining, who cares? The new Netflix film not only revives the teen revenge thriller but gives it a pastel-themed makeover, updating the familiar tropes to fit in with Gen Z sensibilities. Following two teenage girls hellbent on ruining the lives of their enemies, the film acts as a campy twist on the Hitchcock thriller "Strangers on a Train," but also takes inspiration from the classic teen movies of the '80s, '90s, and '00s. The result is wild, hilarious, and much more clever than you'll realize at first glance.
The film from writer-director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-writer Celeste Ballard is packed with easter eggs that go far beyond the script. Visual references include "Clueless," "Mean Girls," "Scream" and so many more — and then there's the matter of casting. "Do Revenge" is stacked...

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s delicious and devious “Do Revenge” takes place firmly in the larger-than-life high schools of movies, cleverly established here by its grossly-rich prep school and their uniforms of light pink, mint green, and purple. Every party scene is a shiny extravaganza with a dress code, looking more like junior “The Wolf of Wall Street” than what you probably experienced. It’s all cosplaying the lavishness and lasciviousness of being an adult, which sets the stage for its wilder drama of manipulation, a year-long bully scheme hellbent on humiliation.

So much for the anticipated lengthy #1 run for “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount/19.99). In its fourth week of VOD availability, the film is down to leading just one of the three charts (Google Play) we follow weekly. Surprising interest for “Beast” (Universal/19.99) saw the modest grossing (31 million) horror film rise to head Vudu’s revenue-based chart its second week out, while “Where the Crawdads Sing” (Sony/5.99) was boosted by an early price reduction, including leading at iTunes.
But “Maverick” is hardly flailing with #2 positions at Vudu and iTunes. Still, neither of the two titles replacing it might have seemed likely contenders to dethrone it.
This week saw notable showings for three leading studios, each suggesting how home play of theatrical releases and windows are still evolving. That includes the current Netflix top ten, which shows how two of them — Sony and Universal — continue to bolster the dominant streaming site.

‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson ‘Would Love’ to Direct a Marvel or DC Movie
[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Do Revenge,” now streaming on Netflix.]
Since her film debut in 2019 with “Someone Great,” Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has been determined to tell stories about “complicated, messy” women — including in the MCU.
Robinson, whose latest film “Do Revenge” is now streaming on Netflix, co-wrote “Thor: Love and Thunder” with director Taika Waititi, all while writing and helming the ’90s-inspired indie feature starring Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes as Eleanor and Drea, two “fucked up TaskRabbits” out to avenge one another’s high school horrors. The ensemble cast including Austin Abrams, Sophie Turner, Ava Capri, Maia Reficco, Paris Berelc, Talia Ryder, Jonathan Daviss, Rish Shah, and Alisha Boe, even dubbed themselves the “Revengers” with a special nod to Marvel’s “Avengers.”
While Robinson especially focused on penning the Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) storyline for “Love and Thunder,” the “Hawkeye” consulting producer hasn’t written off directing her own standalone Marvel film someday.

With “Do Revenge,” Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and co-writer Celeste Ballard have created the ultimate “Fatal Attraction” reference (that would be “Glenn-ergy”) and coined a heck of a brand-new backhanded compliment: Being a “high status cunt.” And if you just flinched, just wait for what Netflix executives had to say.
The “Celeste Ballard original, chef’s kiss” line, as director Robinson told IndieWire, was a bit of dialogue that Netflix was a little uneasy about. Camila Mendes first slings the quotable phrase toward co-star Maya Hawke when engineering a makeover montage for Hawke’s character, something that Robinson felt was important to the tone of the film.
“‘High status cunt’ was something early on where executives were like, ‘Can you find an alt?,'” Robinson said. “They asked to shoot an alt and I was like, ‘No. Because if we shoot it, we have it,...

Note: The following contains spoilers for the “Do Revenge” ending. Do not read until after you’ve seen the film.
The Hitchcockian Netflix movie “Do Revenge” contains several twists and turns, even by “Strangers on a Train” standards. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson describes Hitchcock’s classic “Strangers on a Train” as one source of inspiration for “Do Revenge,” which stars Camila Mendes, Maya Hawke, Austin Abrams and many more famous young faces. But one thing both have in common is a whopper of an ending.
“Most of it is departure I think honestly, it’s really just the very basic conceit,” director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson told TheWrap in a zoom interview during which she also discussed the “Do Revenge” twist ending, as did Maya Hawke.
In the 1951 Alfred Hitchcock thriller, two random strangers meet on a train and get to talking about how they’re not exactly happy with their lots in life.

Claws-out high school drama has inspired some pretty memorable movies. Youthful touchstones like Heathers, Cruel Intentions, and Mean Girls take the intensity of hormones and the cruelty of high school students, and mix them with snappy, era-appropriate dialogue and up-and-coming stars. It’s a potent cocktail that when mixed just right yields delicious results. Netflix is looking to follow that template with their new high school revenge comedy Do Revenge, directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the co-writer of Thor: Love and Thunder who previously helmed Netflix’s Someone Great and created MTV’s Sweet/Vicious.
Will Do Revenge become the 2020s defacto teens-behaving-badly comedy? Only time will tell, but Do Revenge’s cast is enticing enough to suggest that the alchemy may be right for another mean girl magnum opus. Not sure where you’ve seen some of these fresh-faced stars before? Read below to find out.

Despite reports of Gen-z’s progressive politics, it appears hyper-awareness around sexuality, consent, and toxic masculinity have only made high school popularity contests more sophisticated. That is, if we’re to take the outlandish feminist satire running through Netflix’s dark teen comedy “Do Revenge” at face value, anyway. If two-faced men’s groups and psychedelic mushroom stings seem a little ridiculous, it’s all part of the sickly fun and games of “Do Revenge,”
Starring Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”) and Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things”) as two unlikely allies in a battle for teen justice, “Do Revenge” is a funny feminist take on the mainstream high school comedy. Touching lightly on class awareness and queer politics, the girls are firmly in control of this candy-coated world — though only one can come out on top. As their Machiavellian quest for revenge leads to some unlikely revelations, the self-righteous anti-heroines prove that boys...

Austin Abrams’ character Max Broussard in “Do Revenge” could not be more different from his role in “Euphoria” as Ethan Lewis. And for a little bit, Abrams went back and forth between shooting the new Netflix movie (now streaming) and Season 2 of Sam Levinson’s HBO drama.
“It was really fun to go from a very nice, gentle, thoughtful guy to [an] egomaniac,” he said in an interview with TheWrap about his “Do Revenge” character. “That is just really flashy, really craving attention.”

Maya Hawke, Camila Mendes, a Bougie with a capital B high school and two thirsts for vengeance complete the recipe for Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s latest film, “Do Revenge.”
Based broadly on Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” (1951), “Do Revenge” sets a similar switched “getting back at” story in a younger scenario: the elite Rosehill Country Day high school full of entitled and wealthy students. If the story or cast doesn’t sound appealing, maybe the soundtrack will.
Fans of the work of Hitchcock and of Mendes in “Riverdale” or Hawke in “Stranger Things” as well as Austin Abrams’ work in “Euphoria” may be wondering how to watch “Do Revenge.” We’ve rounded up all the details below.

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for “Do Revenge,” now streaming on Netflix.]
A modern update on “Clueless” and “Cruel Intentions” with a “Strangers on a Train” twist? Well, we might not immediately think of Marlon Brando or Paul Newman as inspirations for a Hitchcockian ode to classic ’90s teen dramedies, but we are not Hollywood royalty, Maya Hawke.
The star of Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s “Do Revenge,” now streaming on Netflix, revealed that she was inspired by iconic male onscreen villains while preparing to embody Eleanor, a seemingly innocent new girl on campus who is out for revenge. Eleanor gets schooled by “revenge mommy” Drea, played by Camila Mendes — but Eleanor has more than a few twists up her sleeve.
“I really tried to look at male performances because the nature of both of the lead characters aren’t necessarily ‘likable’ 100 percent of the time,” Hawke told IndieWire. “And I feel like men are often given...
