Gareth Edwards’ battle between mankind and our robot overlords is being touted as a zeitgeist-defining masterpiece – hopefully the promo is under human control
Is Gareth Edwards’ The Creator primed to enter the pantheon of great sci-fi movies? Or should we be wary of all the hype? Because – like our future machine overlords – the hype is coming.
Ahead of any official reviews of the AI-centric piece, studio 20th Century has allowed select critics to tweet their opinions, and the consensus seems to be that this could be the discerning sci-fi fan’s movie of the year. To reach that level for me, Edwards would have to deliver a film on a par with Neill Blomkamp’s District 9 (2009), Alex Garland’s Ex-Machina (2014) or Grant Sputore’s I Am Mother (2019). These films were full of vim and verve and imagined future worlds so rich and detailed that you can imagine never-ending sequels...

The trailer for Gareth Edwards’ new film shows humanity being outsmarted by AI – and is released just as our overlords-to-be are rearing their terrifying heads
It’s been a while since we had a truly great movie about devious, dystopian AIs priming themselves to take over the world, in which the key choices made by mere humans will decide whether we end up as just an organic footnote in histories written by our machine conquerors. Alex Garland’s Ex-Machina (2014) springs to mind, while 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron was a fun comic book romp, if lacking the spiky gravitas and sly intellectual thrust of Garland’s debut. Grant Sputore’s I Am Mother explored similar territory in 2019 with a rather more claustrophobic, yet devastatingly incisive touch. Now there’s Gareth Edwards’ The Creator, the first trailer for which debuted this week, arriving just as very real concerns about the ability...

Netflix has been a godsend for movie lovers, as the entertainment empire completely changed the cinematic landscape and forced studios to scramble toward the front lines in the streaming wars. Thanks to Netflix proving the value of streaming, films have become more accessible than ever. Of course, seeing moves in the theater should always be the preferred method of viewing, but for a multitude of reasons (including the continuing pandemic), some movie lovers may not be able to make it to the big screen.
But Netflix's influence hasn't only impacted theaters, it's also had a drastic impact on physical media releases once films finish their theatrical runs. Unfortunately, this has resulted in some streamers outright refusing to release their original projects on DVD or Blu-ray, which also means a lack of additional content like blooper reels, deleted scenes, and commentary tracks. Given the high-caliber quality of many Netflix originals, plenty...

Exclusive: Hercules Film Fund and Rhea Films have closed a deal to finance and produce a feature-length version of Power Signal — the sci-fi short from Oscar Boyson that had its world premiere in Sundance’s Midnight Shorts section last Friday.
The short stars Babs Olusanmokun (Dune) as a NYC delivery worker who has a close encounter with an otherworldly life form after accepting a degenerate customer’s bizarre proposition. Boyson directed the pic, also starring Angela Sarafyan, Tennessee King and Will Brill, from his and Erin DeWitt’s script, also producing with Jordan Drake, Alex Coco, and production companies Object & Animal and Hayden 5.
Like the short, the feature adaptation is described as a NYC-set sci-fi Western in which e-biking delivery workers are the cowboys. Further plot details are under wraps.

Exclusive: Solstice Studios has optioned feature film rights to Reeves Wiedeman’s New York Magazine article “The Big Hack,” which depicts what experts describe as a plausible doomsday disaster scenario caused by a wide-scale cyberattack on New York City. The recent Colonial pipeline hack purportedly executed by a Russian ransomware group that is spiking gas prices on the East Coast makes the cautionary tale timely.
The article paints a scenario where hackers gain control of everything from the ignition and steering wheels of cars to hospital computers, subways and electricity, plunging the city into total chaos. All of these and other systems are subject to black hat hackers that simply sent Usb sticks to engineers that operate power facilities, promising explanation of benefits. When some of those engineers plugged in the Usb sticks at work, hackers had control. The article appears in the June 13 issue of the mag.

‘Top End Wedding’, ‘Hearts and Bones’ and ‘The King’ are among the 34 longlisted films.
Some 34 feature films will compete for nominations for this year’s Aacta Awards, and the longlist covers a diverse range of titles, from box office earners like Top End Wedding and Storm Boy, through to critically lauded films like The Nightingale and micro budget indies such as Suburban Wildlife.
However, perhaps the most notable inclusion in the longlist is David Michôd’s Netflix Original The King, which premiered at Venice Film Festival last week to an eight-minute standing ovation.
Typically, to be eligible for Aacta Awards, a film – even when made for a streaming platform – must have paid cinema screenings in Australia or local festival play.

Grant Sputore.
After making his feature directing debut on I Am Mother Grant Sputore has no qualms about making the significant leap to directing the science-fiction thriller Augmented for Warner Bros.
“I feel excited and ready to tackle it,” Sputore tells If as he collaborates with his I Am Mother screenwriter Michael Lloyd Green, who is reworking a spec script by Mark Townend.
WB optioned Townend’s script in 2017 and announced it would be produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment. But the project stalled until Robbie hired Sputore and Green, who pitched their vision to studio executives.
Townend’s script was set in a future where people are enhancing their lives with smart technology implants. The plot followed a female criminal defence attorney whose body is hijacked and forced to commit proxy murders.

Warner Bros. has hired I Am Mother’s Grant Sputore to direct Augmented, a sci-fi thiller which Margot Robbie is producing.
Michael Lloyd Green is rewriting an original script by Mark Townend set in a future where people are enhancing their lives with smart technology implants called Glaze.
The plot follows 40-year-old criminal lawyer Olivia Holloway, whose body is hijacked by an anonymous hacker who calls himself “Judge” while she defends the heir to a giant corporation who’s been accused of killing a young woman.
“Judge” threatens to stab her unless she tells the court her client is guilty, which she does, and then tries to use her to commit a series of proxy murders.
The studio acquired the rights to Townend’s spec script in 2017 and announced Robbie’s attachment to produce, according to Variety which broke the story.

Weta Workshop has released a very cool featurette that gives us a behind-the-scenes look at what went into creating the practical robot costume that was used in the Netflix sci-fi film I Am Mother. Yes, in case you didn’t already know, the robot that we saw in this film was not CGI. It was a practical costume, and it was incredibly well made. It’s so cool to see how real they were able to make this robot look.
If you haven’t watched the movie yet, you should check it out. It’s actually really good! It stars Hilary Swank and the story centers on a robot (Rose Byrne) designed to repopulate the earth and she raises a human child (Clara Rugaard). The bond between mother and daughter is tested and threatened when an inexplicable stranger arrives with alarming news. As you’ll see, things will take a dark and sinister turn.

I Am Mother is a Netflix distributed science fiction movie directed by Grant Sputore, who also penned the story, and with a screenplay by Michael Lloyd Green. Sputore put his heart into this, his feature film directorial debut. It is his story, he produced it, and he did a damn good job too. Green, as screenplay writer, delivered too. It is a collaboration between two obviously hungry and passionate creators who have managed to bring a modern sci-fi drama to the surface, something fresh, original and extremely well done.

The Oscar-winning actress plays a mysterious character in Netflix’s new post-apocalyptic thriller.
The last time that Hilary Swank starred in a science fiction movie was 2003, when she played one of a team of scientists who drill deep into the Earth’s crust to save the planet in the rather out-to-lunch The Core. She’s back underground in I Am Mother, a decidedly more serious story in which she plays a mysterious character known only as Woman. Swank’s enigmatic interloper comes between a young girl named Daughter (Clara Rugaard) and an AI called Mother (voiced by Rose Byrne) when the girl lets Woman into the bunker in which she has been raised by Mother from an embryo.
The bunker, it turns out, is a repository for thousands of such embryos, stored there to restart the human race in the wake of an unknown global catastrophe. But...

Hilary Swank stars in this post-apocalyptic thriller and is joined by Rose Byrne and new comer Clara Rugaar. There’s a long, absolutely delightful history of demented robots and dangerously self-aware A.I. in science fiction, and for a while, it’s hard to tell where I Am Mother‘s title character belongs in the Bad ‘Bot pantheon. It’s tough to pinpoint why, exactly, you don’t trust Mother, an angular android with a single peering eye and a track-runner’s gait. But you sense there’s something unsettling about this caretaker from the moment you see her pull out a tiny palm-sized packet containing a human...

I Am Mother is one of those original Netflix movies that feels both ambitious and undercooked. It takes place, we are told at the outset, in an undefined future where an “extinction event” has taken place, wiping out most if not all of the human race. But stored in an underground bunker in case of just such a crisis are some 63,000 frozen human embryos, all carefully tended by an a robot named Mother, who hatches one of the embryos in the bunker’s medical lab and grows it via montage into a teenage girl named Daughter (newcomer Clara Rugaard).
Mother acts as Daughter’s parental figure, friend, playmate, doctor and teacher, and when the girl is naturally curious about what lies outside the bunker, Mother regretfully...
