Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars to have never dipped his toes into the superhero genre. While Cruise was once in contention for the role of Tony Stark / Iron Man during the inception of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the star could have just as easily ended up on the DC side of the superhero landscape.

The Walking Dead maker Skybound Entertainment is pushing into the unscripted game.
The firm has hired ex-Catalina Content exec Brent Jacoby to head up the new division, which will tap into pre-existing Skybound IP such as AMC smash The Walking Dead and Amazon Prime Video’s Invincible.
Jacoby will be focused on quickly expanding the global unscripted TV slate, although Skybound didn’t delve any deeper into his strategy. He joins at the same time as former MGM TV VP Chris Goble, who takes up the newly-created SVP of Television role. Both will report to TV President Glenn Geller.
Jacoby joins from Sky Studios-backed Catalina where he developed the likes of The Mighty Underdogs for Discovery+. Prior to that, he led the development team for ITV America’s Outpost Entertainment, working for the likes of Discovery, A&e, Food Network and Science Channel including History’s Knife or Death.

When it comes to American crime fiction, you know the drill: Some hard-luck case, some tough guy, some boss. The first big score, one last job. Bad romance, the kind that gets people killed. Crime fiction is neon and shadows, cigarette smoke and cheap perfume. Gunpowder. Tropes as worn as a pair of old boots. Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips' Criminal wears them proudly.
Brubaker and Phillips launched their Eisner award-winning comic series in 2006 and have since created their own niche in the comics industry. When a Brubaker/Phillips book drops, it's accepted as both an event and business as usual. Their 30-year collaboration has practically become an institution; it'd be big-time news if they ever decided to go their separate ways.

‘Criminal”, the award-winning, creator-owned graphic novel title by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, has been given a live-acrion TV series order from Amazon:
“…the series is a meditation on the clichés of the crime genre while remaining realistic and believable, with story arcs that are self-contained focusing on different characters, from Center City, that frequent the same bar, and share a common history of two generations of crime.
‘With his partner ‘Ivan’, ‘Tommy Patterson’ ran the city's most proficient crew of pickpockets and taught the trade to his eight-year-old son, ‘Leo’. When Tommy was arrested and imprisoned for the murder of ‘Teeg Lawless’, Ivan took care of Leo and explained to him how following certain rules can keep a criminal "out in the world", out of both prison and the morgue…”

This post contains spoilers for Marvel’s Echo.
Ah, Netflix’s Daredevil. We didn’t know how good we had it.
We all thrilled to the series’ first season, with its violent actions and powerful performances from Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D’Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, but the second season got too muddled with the Punisher and Elektra, and then Netflix diluted the Marvel shows with seasons that went on too long and the boring crossover Defenders. Daredevil‘s third season returned the show to its former glory, but by that time, too many viewers had fallen off.
So when Cox’s Matt caught a brick in Spider-Man: No Way Home and when D’Onofrio’s Fisk lumbered into the final episode of Hawkeye, fans got excited. In this era of mediocre Marvel entries, Daredevil and Kingpin would bring a much-needed edge back to the MCU. Daredevil’s one-episode...

Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, will soon become a TV series on Prime Video.
Prime Video has given a series order to Criminal, nearly a year after it was put on the development fast-track. A writers’ room for the project was put together early last year, but the WGA strike brought development to a halt. Criminal tells “the interweaving saga of several generations of families tied together by the crimes and murders of the past.” Ed Brubaker wrote the script for the pilot and will co-showrun the series with Jordan Harper (Hightown). Both will also executive produce alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, Phillip Barnett, and Legendary Television.

Danish writer/director Nicolas Winding Refn isn’t as pessimistic as he was back when he declared that “cinema is dead,” but he’s no fan of the streamers that, in his words, have “kind of saturated everything” and “devalued content to just a swipe.” He made the comments while participating in a masterclass at the Venice Film Festival. According to Variety, the filmmaker behind “Drive” and “The Neon Demon” called the streamers “overfunded with money and cocaine.”
Refn, whose last project was Netflix series “Copenhagen Cowboy,” argued that “it’s incredibly sad and terrifying because art is essentially the only thing – besides, you know, sex, water and happiness — that makes us exist.”
While arguing that cinema was not quite as dead as he projected a few years ago, he stated that film has changed into “something we have to fight for.” He declared, “Theatrical movies are part of what...

Three new DC animated projects have been acquired by Prime Video including the film Merry Little Batman ordered with a spinoff series, Bat-Family, and a two-season order for Batman: Caped Crusader, from executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves.
Merry Little Batman is an animated family action comedy that follows young Damian Wayne as he finds himself alone in Wayne Manor on Christmas Eve transforming into “Little Batman” in order to defend his home and Gotham City from the crooks and supervillains intent on destroying the holidays.
Produced by Warner Bros. Animation and based on characters from DC, Merry Little Batman is directed by Mike Roth (Regular Show) from a screenplay by Morgan Evans (Teen Titans Go!). Roth also serves as executive producer, alongside Sam Register.

The references and Easter eggs in "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" may keep Mario fans satiated, but they're also a celebration of all things Nintendo. As much as Illumination's new animated film is a love letter to the illustrious video game company, its credits left out a name that made a vitally important contribution to Nintendo history. That would be Grant Kirkhope, the composer of the legendary Dk Rap featured in the 1999 Nintendo 64 game "Donkey Kong 64."
The Dk Rap has experienced a strange evolution from being the target of disdain to ironic enjoyment to genuine nostalgic love. Sure, it may have been annoying to hear the same record scratches and "Here-here-here- we go!" every time you popped in the yellow cartridge of "Donkey Kong 64," but once the tune inevitably wormed itself into your brain it was hard to deny its catchiness. Kirkhope had always intended the song to be a joke,...

With Francis Ford Coppola’s decades-in-development passion project Megalopolis recently wrapped after a smooth production, there’s been some speculation that the $100 million epic––starring Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia Labeouf, Chloe Fineman, Kathryn Hunter, Dustin Hoffman, Db Sweeney, Talia Shire, Jason Schwartzman, Bailey Ives, Grace Vanderwaal, James Remar, and Giancarlo Esposito––could see the light of day before the end of the year, but that won’t be the case.
As announced at Wondercon 2023, Popverse reports the Syzygy, the comics publisher, will be releasing a graphic novel tie-in for Megalopolis timed with its release in 2024. Coming from Syzygy co-founder Chris Ryall and artist Jacob Phillips, who were contacted by Coppola, they spent time on set developing this adaptation. “The exciting thing is that I’ve only worked directly with him on this,” Ryall said. “This isn’t the kind of thing...

Back in 2021, it was announced that a new animated Batman show was coming on board as executive producers, Ed Brubaker on the creative team, and got an instant 10-episode series order. It sounded like every Batman fan’s dream – except, in August last year, the series was axed at HBO Max amid a bout of Warner Bros. Discovery cost-cutting. Good news: it’s taken a while, but the show finally has a new home.
Now, Amazon has picked up Caped Crusader for a two-season order on its Prime Video streaming service – though, according to THR, formal deals are yet to be signed. In recent years, Amazon has ploughed further into comic book-inspired adult animated fare – from the uncompromising Invincible, to The Boys animated spin-off Diabolical, so while it’s surprising to see a property as huge as Batman end up somewhere other than a Warner Bros outlet, it seems a sensible home for the show.

Nearly two years ago, HBO Max and Cartoon Network ordered a new Batman animated series from Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, and Matt Reeves. Fans were excited about a new Batman series, especially with the involvement of Bruce Timm, but the series unfortunately didn’t survive the axe of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, who scrapped it along with many others. Thankfully, Amazon has come to the rescue and given Batman: Caped Crusader a two-season order.
When Batman: Caped Crusader was cancelled as a cost-cutting move, Warner Bros. Animation started shopping the show to other streaming services. The series is billed as a “reimagining of the Batman mythology” that will utilize “state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.“

J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves’ animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader” has been picked up at Amazon after being scrapped at HBO Max, Variety has confirmed.
The streamer has placed a two-season order for the cartoon, which is described as “a reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens” of executive producers Abrams, Reeves and Bruce Timm.
“Batman: Caped Crusader” was ordered to series at HBO Max in May 2021. In August 2022, the show was scrapped along with five other upcoming animated series set up at the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streamer, including “Merry Little Batman,” “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” “Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical,” “Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story” and “The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie.”
The animated series getting the ax came following HBO’s decision to let go of Abrams’ science fiction drama “Demimonde” last June.

Amazon Studios has ordered two seasons of “Batman: Caped Crusader.” The animated series is being billed as a reimagining of the Batman mythology via executive producers Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, Sam Register and Ed Brubaker.
The show, produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions and 6th & Idaho, was initially positioned as an HBO Max original before Warner Bros. Discovery changed course. It was not canceled, as initially reported elsewhere, but merely put out into the third-party licensing marketplace.
Considering the IP in question, and the creators involved, it can be speculated that it fetched a lot more cash-in-hand revenue from Amazon than it would have earned as a first-party HBO Max title.
Timm was the co-creator, alongside Eric Radomski, of the groundbreaking and universally acclaimed “Batman: The Animated Series” which ran for over 100 episodes first on Fox and then on WB from 1992 to 1999. The stylized, art-deco action...

Batman: Caped Crusader has found a new home at Amazon.
The streamer and retail giant has handed out a two-season order for the animated series that was scrapped at HBO Max last August. Caped Crusader landed at the Jennifer Salke-led streamer after producer Warner Bros. Animation shopped the project following the cost-cutting move that saw parent company Warner Bros. Discovery scrap the show more than a year and a half after ordering it straight to series. Other streamers, including Netflix, Apple and Hulu, also kicked the tires on the project that marks a reunion for executive producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves, who previously collaborated on The WB Network’s beloved Felicity.
The animated series hails from Bruce Timm, Abrams and Reeves and was sold to a streaming rival as part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s efforts to monetize content by selling projects to third-party buyers.

Many comic fans probably know Ed Brubaker as the man who created the Winter Soldier, reinventing long-dead sidekick Bucky Barnes. Brubaker is much more than a one-trick pony, though. He got his start writing crime comics and, after a self-imposed exile from Big Two superhero comics, he's made that his full-time gig.
He and Sean Phillips have become an inseparable writer-artist pair, putting out regular graphic novels and mini-series that always find a new way to tell Noir stories. For my money, Brubaker and Phillips' books are some of the best American comics being made right now.
"Fatale" was about a seductress whose allure is literally supernatural, while "Pulp" is about a former gunslinger who pawns off embellished versions of his escapades in early 20th-century magazines. Their definite project, though, is "Criminal," an anthology series about, well, criminals who live in the fictional Center City. Each volume tells a different story,...

Exclusive: Amazon Studios is finalizing deals for Criminal, a TV adaptation of Ed Brubaker and artist Sean Phillips’ bestselling crime comic book series, sources tell Deadline.
Details are scarce but the project, written by Brubaker, who serves as executive producer and showrunner, is described as an interlocking universe of crime stories based on his award-winning comic book series. I hear a writers room for the potential series is up and running. A rep for Amazon Studios declined comment.
Nick Pepper, Amazon Studios’ Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Wholly Owned, and his lieutenant Matt King, Head of Tentpole, Genre and Universe Development of wholly owned content, are believed to have championed bringing in Criminal for development. It's been known since 2016 that the third "Captain America" movie wasn't always going to be "Civil War." For one, Robert Downey Jr.'s involvement took some negotiation and you can't have "Civil War" without Iron Man. Second, the original plot was totally different.
As /Film reported at that time, the initial threequel premise centered around the "Madbomb." What is that, you might ask? In the Marvel Universe, it's a device that, through sonic waves, can drive whole crowds into frenzied violence. The device debuted in 1975; the eponymous "Madbomb" storyline ran in "Captain America" #193 to #200, written and drawn by original Cap co-creator Jack Kirby. Nate Moore, a producer on "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "Civil War," aptly compared the Madbomb to the rage-inducing Sim cards in "Kingsman: The Secret Service."
"Cap 3: Madbomb" still would have featured the return of Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) and Baron Zemo (Daniel Bruhl) as the villain.

When characters have been around for decades, a number of people tend to leave their creative fingerprints on them. For example, Captain America was created in 1940 by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby for Timely Comics. He was a World War II soldier that went above and beyond the call of duty to aid in the fight against the Axis powers, particularly the Nazis. Later, when the company transitioned to Marvel, Stan Lee brought Cap into the modern day in 1963's "The Avengers" #4 as part of the popular super team. From there, a number of extremely talented people like Ed Brubaker, Mark Gruenwald, Roger Stern, Mark Waid, and Ta-Nehisi Coates have crafted character-defining stories for the Star-Spangled Man With A Plan. But as a character goes from creator to creator, they may change slightly. While it's certainly possible for people (fictional or otherwise) to be multifaceted in their personalities, those changes...

This post contains spoilers for She-Hulk Attorney at Law Episode 7
When it comes to comic book adaptations, the devil is in the details. So when Netflix debuted a live-action version of Daredevil in 2015, fans were thrilled to see a hard-edged take on the street-level hero. Between that show’s shocking violence and Charlie Cox’s soulful performance as the charming, but conflicted Matt Murdock, Daredevil’s 2003 big-screen misfire was all but forgotten. However, concerns bubbled up again in the long runup between Cox’s cameo as Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and his in-costume return in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Many wondered how the more family-friendly MCU would handle the action, and how the universe’s self-deprecating humor would play with such a brooding character.
Turns out, it worked pretty good! She-Hulk episode seven “Ribbit and Rip It” proved to be a highlight of the series, even winning over...

Next month, writers Tom King and Phil Hester are teaming up to bring back one of Gotham City’s oldest protectors. No, not Batman. Heck, I’m not even talking about the original Green Lantern and his cabbie sidekick Doiby Dickles.
I mean Slam Bradley, the hard-drinking, hard-talking Pi. Originally a lead character in Detective Comics, Bradley has been a mainstay in Batman’s orbit since the ’30s, and has even headlined several series. He’ll get that chance again as King and Hester make him the lead in Gotham City: Year One.
Working alongside illustrator Eric Gapstur, colorist Jordie Bellaire, and letterer Clayton Cowles, King and Hester tell the origin story of DC’s famously crime-riddled city. At the center of this tale is Bradley, who is on the case of Helen Wayne, a Gotham City heiress who goes missing. Bradley’s investigation will uncover deep corners of rot within the city,...

It seems like since the merger with Warner Bros, Discovery CEO David Zaslav is not just overseeing the productions of previously announced projects, but he also appears to be cleaning house on movies or TV shows that the company can stand to save some money on. HBO Max Cancels More Animation, Including ‘Batman: The Caped Crusader’ and 2 ‘Looney Tunes’ Projects
HBO Max continues its baffling decisions regarding its animated programming, with six animated projects no longer making their way to the direct-to-consumer streaming platform, TheWrap has confirmed.
Among the projects that will no longer stream on the platform: “Batman: The Caped Crusader,” from “The Batman” director Matt Reeves, J.J. Abrams and comic book luminary Ed Brubaker; “Did I Do That to the Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story,” an animated “Family Matters” spinoff; and two high-profile “Looney Tunes” features.
While those projects are still in development, some of which are pretty far along, TheWrap has confirmed that “Driftwood,” an original HBO Max animated feature from Victor Courtright, has been fully canceled.

“I made macaroni.” That line, from Hawkeye episode 5 “Ronin,” launched one of the most exciting developments in the MCU’s phase four: the friendship between Kate Bishop and Yelena Belova. Played with irreverent pluck by Florence Pugh, Belova was not only the breakout character in Black Widow, but also a key part of Marvel’s future plans, joining Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine’s team of misfits. If early reaction to Yelena is any indication, then the Marvel Cinematic Universe can continue its popularity, even as it loses original heroes like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.
Like every other part of the MCU, Yelena Belova has her roots in the comics. First introduced in 1999’s Inhumans #5, Yelena was created by writer Devon Grayson and artist J.G. Jones as an antagonist and eventual ally to Black Widow Natasha Romanov. Given the important role that Belova played in Black Widow and Hawkeye,...

Development continues on a live-action TV series adaptation of the Icon Comics graphic novel “Incognito" (2008), written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips:
"...What if you were an ex-super-villain hiding out in 'Witness Protection', but all you could think about were the days when the 'firewalls' were in place, and the rules didn't apply to you?
"Could you stand the toil of an average life after years of leaving destruction in your wake? And what if you couldn't stand it? What would you do then?..."
"'Incognito' is the story of a bad guy forced to be good," said Brubaker," and what happens when he starts to go stir-crazy from the monotony of normal life. It's a dark look at good and evil and pulp and noir all in one hard-hitting package."...

So where does the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen go next? At this point, there’s no clear word about the new show being a continuation of the Netflix series or a hard reboot. Likely, Marvel will split the difference. If so, the new Daredevil series could retain the cast and continuity, while eschewing its predecessor’s darker tone.
If that’s the case, then comic books may be the best guide for future Daredevil stories…
“Daredevil: Reborn”
(Daredevil #1 -6, 2011 – 2012)
When the first episode of Daredevil dropped in 2015, it announced itself as something very different than other superhero shows. Daredevil was violent, willing to show the brutal cost of fighting criminals without powers or superweapons. But to be frank, that’s not the tone that made the MCU such a success. How can viewers transition from the bleakness...

This article contains spoilers for Batman #118.
There’s no bigger single title in the DC Comics library right now than the core Batman book. Consistently the book where the future of the Dark Knight is made each month, it’s also been the DC title with perhaps the longest unbroken run of the highest-possible-octane creative teams in superhero comics over the last 15 years. Since 2006, Batman has been written by Grant Morrison, Scott Snyder, Tom King, and James Tynion IV, each bringing their own flavor to the book over extended, sprawling runs.
The latest writer to hit the bat-jackpot is Joshua Williamson, who has had a string of creative successes of his own over the last few years, but who is perhaps best known for an unbroken five year run on The Flash, where he renewed and restored countless elements of not just Barry Allen’s history, but the entire Flash legacy.
