While fans of Sucker Punch's "Ghost of Tsushima" can still expect to see a film adaptation of PS4's fastest-selling first-party video game, they may want to slightly temper their expectations. When Head of Playstation Productions, Asad Qizilbash, announced the project and its director Chad Stahelski in March 2021, his statement — "We're excited to be partnering with Chad and 87Eleven Entertainment, to bring their vision of Jin's story to the big screen" — left us hoping production would begin soon. Stahelski further fueled intrigue in the film when he told Collider in August 2021 that he planned to make "Ghost of Tsushima'' as a Japanese language film with an all-Japanese cast, and Deadline broke more promising news last April that the studio had hired writer and director Takashi Doscher to develop the script.

It was announced last year that Chad Stahelski had signed on to direct a movie adaptation of Ghost of Tsushima, the extremely popular video game released on PS4 two years ago. The game puts you in control of Jin Sakai, a samurai on a quest to protect Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan. While it might make sense for a Japanese story to be told in the Japanese language, this is Hollywood we’re talking about. They haven’t always believed that mainstream American audiences can handle subtitles, but Chad Stahelski is hoping to help change that.

While speaking with Collider, Chad Stahelski explained why he’s so excited to helm the Ghost of Tsushima movie.
Honestly, it’s probably the same things that would scare the shit out of most people. It’s a fantasy period piece.

The "Ghost of Tsushima" movie, based on the popular 2020 Sony Interactive video game, has found its writer. The movie will be directed by "John Wick" franchise helmer Chad Stahelski, which means the game's samurai-inspired action sequences should pack plenty of punch. Deadline reports that Takashi Doscher will pen the screenplay for the upcoming Sony Pictures production. The project is still in early development, but having a screenwriter is usually one of the biggest early hurdles, so this is huge news for "Ghost" moving forward. The wildly popular video game has its roots in classic Japanese cinema, so this is one adaptation that might make the transition to...

In light of current world events, it feels a bit odd to be talking about a movie like Only but it acts as a good reminder of how bad things can get if the world doesn't manage to get its act together.
Takashi Doscher's third narrative feature, the film unfolds in a nearby future where Eva (Freida Pinto) and Will (Leslie Odom Jr.), newly dating, are having a night in when strange ash starts to fall from the sky. There's no explanation for what's causing this odd snow but almost immediately after it begins, women, including Eva's roommate, begin to get sick and die. As time passes, doctors discover that both men and women are carriers for whatever disease the ash brings with it but it's only deadly to females, and not only of the human species.

Leslie Odom Jr. and Freida Pinto make sympathetic, easy-on-the-eyes lovers in “Only,” an absorbing post-catastrophe drama, in theaters and on demand March 6. Consider “Only” a variation on the “What would you do in this horrid situation?” subgenre. Only it’s more a “What would we do?” which can be an exponentially more challenging proposition. (Hard enough to agree on where to get takeout.)
Written and directed by Takashi Doscher, “Only” opens on the 400th day of an unceasing disaster that began with ash snowing down across the globe. The story moves back and forth in time, showing the pair under better circumstances and ever so slowly meting out the arrival and impact of the virus. As in many disaster films, newscasts and the radio broadcast do some of the exposition. That there is news, internet, water for a shower hints at the catastrophe’s strange arc.

Only is a sci-fi feature from director Takashi Doscher (Still). This post-apocalyptic thriller focuses on a couple, trying to survive in a deteriorating landscape. Making matters worse, Eva is the last woman alive, after an ash has devastated the planet. Now, both Eva (Freida Pinto) and Will (Leslie Odom Jr.) are heading for the wilderness, in an attempt to hide from the world. A trailer for Only was just released in February. And, this title is expected to show in a few theatres and on Digital platforms this March 6th. Chandler Riggs ("The Walking Dead") also stars, with this article serving as your gentle reminder that a post-apocalyptic thriller is releasing this week, a bit under-the-radar. If there was a checklist of items to include in a movie that spoke to me directly, Only would be right at the top. Post-apocalyptic, mysterious, dramatic, beautiful and focused on a woman. Though in the case of Takashi Doscher's sophomore effort, it's more about the lack of women.
The set-up is eerily similar to Light of My Life (trailer) and though both films tell the story of a world without women, they do so in very different ways. Light of My Life takes place long after the women have dies and has a man at its centre while Only unfolds just as the world is starting to lose women in mass numbers and the story is centrally focused...

"I'm not trying to control you, I'm trying to protect you." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for an indie sci-fi drama titled Only, the second feature film from up-and-coming filmmaker Takashi Doscher (of Still previously). This originally premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and arrives in theaters next month. After a comet releases a mysterious virus that begins to kill all the women in the world, a couple's relationship is severely tested. They hide out (from both the illness and the savages who hunt the remaining women) in their over-sterilized apartment, until they must venture out into the wilderness once again. Starring Leslie Odom Jr. & Freida Pinto, along with Chandler Riggs, Jayson Warner Smith, Joshua Mikel, Mark Ashworth, and Tia Hendricks. Not an original idea, but perhaps the film is good. Exclusive: New Line has set Tony-winning actor Leslie Odom Jr. for a starring role in The Many Saints Of Newark, the prequel film to David Chase’s iconic HBO series The Sopranos. He joins Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Ray Liotta, Jon Bernthal, Corey Stoll, Billy Magnussen, John Magaro and Michael Gandolfini, the latter of whom is reprising the Tony Soprano role originated by his late father, James Gandolfini.
No one is saying what role Odom Jr. will play, but the film is set in the era of the Newark riots in the 60s, when the African-Americans and the Italians of Newark were at each other’s throats. Among the gangsters of each group, that clash became especially lethal. I have heard that Odom figures directly into that conflict which involves Dickie Moltisanti (Nivola), who is the father of Tony Soprano’s lieutenant Christopher (played in the series by Michael Imperioli...

"Vows weren't meant for this. What we're doing - this ain't natural." The Orchard has released an official trailer for an indie drama titled simply Still, a shortened version of the original title Moon Shine Still. This premiered at the Atlanta Film and Video Festival last year, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Takashi Doscher, born in Atlanta, Ga. The indie film is about a young hiker who stumbles onto an isolated farm after losing her way on the Appalachian Trail. She's taken in by a strange yet beautiful couple trying to protect a secret deep in the mountains. That's a bit vague, but still intriguing. The small cast includes Lydia Wilson, Nick Blood, and Madeline Brewer. This looks very suspenseful and eerie, but a bit unrefined. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Takashi Doscher's Still, direct from YouTube: When a young female hiker (Lydia Wilson) stumbles onto...

Waltz for One from Intellectual Propaganda on Vimeo. Why Watch? A shrill emergency buzzer is the last thing you want to hear while floating in orbit around the Earth inside a tin can. You’ll get to know that beeping bastard well in John Merizalde‘s latest work. The director, alongside his Intellectual Propaganda team have joined in the stunning tradition of Kubrick and Tarkovsky and Moon to craft a disturbing, absolutely gorgeous film about the solitude of space. It was co-written by Takashi Doscher, who should be familiar if you read this column regularly. It’s more proof that he (and that particular production house) are talents to keep a very close eye on. Check out more of his work here. What will it cost? Only 10 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films...

Why Watch? Call it sugary, call it a little schmaltzy, but there’s a lot to love about Takashi Doscher‘s new short film that focuses on a very lucky cab driver who wins tickets to Game 7 of the World Series and his last client of the day. Slickly shot with as much heart as humor, it overcomes a general Aw Shucks vibe with a loveable comedic lug in star Ted Huckabee and stands as further proof that Doscher is a talent to watch out for. What will it cost? Only 8 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films...

Why Watch? Smartly shot with an engaging lead this short film from Takashi Doscher brings a story literally to life. In it, an author consumed by writing his next novel ignores the real world at his own peril, and when his work bleeds into reality, he’ll have to deal with some severe consequences. It flashes with a noir sensibility and style but manages a lot of humor without crossing the line into parody. With subtle nods and a nice mirroring technique, it’s clever work that’s got a great eye for location, art direction, and camera work. What will it cost? Only 7 minutes. Skip Work. You’ve Got Time For More Short Films.
