I didn't publish a full review of Fox's "Surviving Jack," but I did offer a few thoughts on the show — specifically about the strength of Christopher Meloni's lead performance — at the start of the long Meloni interview I published the other day. Now it's your turn. For those who tuned in tonight, what did you think? How would you compare it to either "The Goldbergs," "Growing Up Fisher" or the previous attempt to make a sitcom about Justin Halpern's father, "Feces My Dad Says"? Did you enjoy the period references? Did you find Connor Buckley funny as the kid? And will you watch again? Have at it.

Christopher Meloni's new series isn't so much about the law, but there's no question he's still trying to maintain order.
Three years after ending his long "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" run as Detective Elliot Stabler, the actor goes for laughs in the Fox sitcom "Surviving Jack," premiering Thursday, March 27.
Bill Lawrence ("Cougar Town") is among the executive producers of the 1990s-set show, based on Justin Halpern's autobiographical book "I Suck at Girls." Meloni basically plays Halpern's father, a no-nonsense doctor who becomes a Mr. Mom to his teen children when his wife (Rachael Harris) starts law school.
"I was kind of leaning toward this arena," Meloni tells Zap2it of tackling a more humorous project than he usually has lately, "and it's been borne out in that I feel lighter in my day."
And lighter in his new role, too: "I think people find it refreshing when someone is unapologetically himself,...

Christopher Meloni has had the kind of varied, almost schizophrenic, and very vivid acting career in which the first thing you see him in would likely color your perceptions of him for years to come. I first encountered him in the sixth season of “1st & Ten,” a raunchy ‘80s HBO comedy about a pro football team whose cast at various points included Delta Burke, Shannon Tweed, O.J. Simpson and, for a season — as an ex-con quarterback calling himself Johnny Gunn — a young Meloni. (Here’s the opening credits for that season.) As a result of that and a few other sitcom roles immediately after, I thought of him as a comedy guy and was thrown when he would pop up playing intense dramatic roles in the ‘90s on shows like “NYPD Blue,” “Homicide” and, for a long and memorable stretch, “Oz,” HBO’s first original dramatic series, in which Meloni...

I'm tired of typing "Jack's back" when it comes to the return of "24," but at least now we know when Jack is actually coming back. As part of its Television Critics Association press tour appearance on Monday (January 13) morning, Fox announced spring premieres for the comedy "Surviving Jack," the action-drama "Gang Related" and, of course, the event series "24: Live Another Day." Up first is "Surviving Jack," which is based on Justin Halpern's book "I Suck at Girls" and features Christopher Meloni, Connor Buckley, Rachael Harris and Claudia Lee in a '90s coming-of-age comedy. Exclusive: Rachael Harris is is set as the female lead opposite Chris Meloni in Fox’s midseason comedy series Surviving Jack. The single-camera project, from Warner Bros. TV and Bill Lawrence‘ Doozer, is based on Justin Halpern’s book I Suck At Girls. It centers on a father, Jack Dunlevy (Meloni), and his teen son Frankie (Connor Buckley). Harris plays the Alpha-Mom, Joanne Dunlevy, who has decided to go back to law school, somewhat reluctantly leaving the care of her kids to her brash husband. The role was recast after being played by Alex Kapp Horner in the pilot. (you can watch the series’ trailer below) Harris recently starred opposite David Spade in the ABC comedy pilot Bad Management, which was in serious contention for a series pickup. She also recurs on USA drama Suits and did an arc on Fox comedy New Girl. On the feature side, Harris is...

The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the second announced yesterday. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on Fox.
While "The Following" proved a breakout winner, Fox had few success stories last season. So, it is going a bit more ambitious this year with numerous dramas, comedies and one-off "event series".
Several pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen including the family of government-sanctioned assassins drama "Boomerang," the adaptation of Lauren Oliver's book trilogy "Delirium" about a world where love is illegal, the legal interns workplace comedy "To My Assistant," the U.S.S. Lexington-set "The Wild Blue," and "The List" about the hunt for a thief who stole a file containing the secret identities of people in the Witness Security Program,

Fox is going back to the past in its new comedy "Surviving Jack" -- all the way back to the early 1990s.
The coming-of-age story centering on the relationship between a teenage boy (Connor Buckley) and his aloof dad (former "Law & Order: Svu" star Christopher Meloni), the Jack of the title, is set in 1991. (It's based on a book by series co-creator Justin Halpern, who was in fact a teenager in the '90s.)
Aside from a Marky Mark song and a few jokes at the expense of a Hypercolor shirt, though, the show focuses more on the core relationship than on the setting. The show's trailer has a low-key vibe that's pretty much the opposite of the last show based on something Halpern wrote, "$#*! My Dad Says." Meloni has a very good deadpan, and Buckley conveys the frustrations of high school pretty well.

Fox has one of its better slates coming your way with the new season, especially if you take the midseason shows into account. Some of these shows may not jump out at you now as must-see, but some of them are going to take over, if I’m any judge anyway.
Clear showcase offerings Dads, Almost Human, and Us & Them are guaranteed to take off early. Almost Human has J.J. Abrams recognition to pull people in, though it looks to be a show that could flounder after a few episodes, even if I hope it doesn’t. The other two are going to become hits. Unfortunately, we have to wait until mid-season for the Gavin & Stacey remake.
Rake also looks like a winner, as long as the translation can be made to work as an Americanized product, and the show actually delivers what made the Australian original so brilliant.

Fox has officially picked up five new comedies for its 2013-2014 season -- among them, an offering from "Family Guy" boss Seth MacFarlane and star vehicles for TV favorites Jason Ritter and Chris Meloni. The network only picked up three comedies last year.
First off, some sad news for "Parenthood" fans but great news for Jason Ritter -- he's finally found a strong pilot to lead in "Us and Them," previously known as "Friends and Family." Based on the British series "Gavin and Stacey," "Us and Them" pairs Ritter with Alexis Bledel in a long-distance rom-com.
"Law & Order: Svu" star Chris Meloni is taking a comedic turn with "Surviving Jack," based on Justin Halpern's book "I Suck at Girls." Set in the '90s, the series comes from the team behind "S#*! My Dad Says" and also stars Alex Kapp Horner, Connor Buckley, Claudia Lee, Kevin Hernandez, and Tyler Foden.

Former "Law & Order: Svu" star Christopher Meloni has lined up his next series role, and it's a long way from Elliot Stabler.
Meloni will star in a comedy at Fox from writers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker ("Cougar Town," "$#*! My Dad Says"), based on Halpern's book "I Suck at Girls." One of the longest and most persistent courtships this pilot season ended successfully last night when former Law & Order: Svu star Christopher Meloni signed on to topline Fox’s untitled Justin Halpern & Patrick Schumacker comedy pilot (aka I Suck At Girls), from Bill Lawrence’s Doozer and Warner Bros TV. Meloni fielded interest from about a dozen pilots this season, turning down all offers, including the Halpern/Schumacker project at first. But the producers came back to him, and he ultimately agreed to do it. Helping the cause was the fact that Meloni and Lawrence have known each other for a long time, and Meloni did an episode of Lawrence’s NBC comedy series Scrubs years ago. Based on Halpern’s book I Suck At Girls, the single-camera comedy tells the story of a boy becoming a man, and a man becoming a father, in a time before coming of...
