A Blue Demon Jr. Lucha Libre Universe is in the works. Candle Media’s Exile Content Studio and L.A.-based film company Moxie 88 have joined forces to produce a range of content based on Mexican wrestling icon, Blue Demon Jr.
The new 360-degree pact aims to expand the use of Blue Demon Jr.’s likeness in the areas of film, television, animation and merchandising on a worldwide scale.
As the adopted son of Blue Demon, the legendary 1950s Mexican wrestling (Lucha Libre) icon who inspired hundreds of comic books and nearly 30 feature films, Blue Demon Jr. has continued the noble tradition, stamping his own style on the wildly popular sport. He became the first Mexican and second masked wrestler to claim the prestigious Nwa World Heavyweight Championship and has sold out shows at Madison Square Garden.

In Ryan Coogler's upcoming superhero movie "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," the title country will see itself invaded by a species of undersea humanoids led by their king, Namor. Also known as the Sub-Mariner in Marvel comics, Namor may be the highest-profile superhero character to have yet to appear in a live-action feature film. Throughout the character's history, Namor has functioned as both hero and villain, sometimes using his powers of flight and super strength to help the Fantastic Four, but just as often harming humanity for their role in polluting the seas. In the comics, the character is sternly principled and doesn't suffer fools gladly.
Namor will be played by Tenoch Huerta, the Mexican actor who previously appeared in dozens of Mexican features including "Sin Nombre," and "Tigers Are Not Afraid," as well as a few American films like "The Forever Purge." He also played the famed real-life luchador Blue Demon,...

In a cold storage facility two miles south of downtown Los Angeles, the “Lucha Underground” ring sits empty. A day’s worth of dust settles on the seats and bleachers that were once filled with rabid fans chanting “Cero Miedo.” The lights that give the impromptu arena a pulpy comic book feel are off, leaving it feeling as lifeless and abandoned as it was when the cult wrestling TV show’s production team first found it.
But around the corner, in the darkest, dustiest area of the facility, Skip Chaisson is filming the type of scene he originally visualized when he found this decrepit location. Standing in his camera monitor, bathed in lights that shine beneath creaky floorboards, is Matanza Cueto, the ferocious, murderous man possessed by a bloodthirsty Aztec god. The 2014 WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony is this Saturday, and another group of inductees, headlined by the Ultimate Warrior, will join the ranks of wrestling’s greatest men and women. But there are still numerous deserving wrestlers who have not yet been inducted.
Here is a list of 15 of those wrestlers, tag teams, or factions that deserve to be in the WWE Hall of Fame.
Keep in mind that this list has been compiled according to WWE’s criteria for what constitutes a deserving addition to an “elite” group that includes Koko B. Ware but not Frank Gotch. There are going to be a lot of names not included that many will feel are more deserving of inclusion, and they should check out the list of the Professional Wrestling Hall of Famers or the Wrestling Observer Hall of Famers.
Here is the extensive criteria for those who will not make this list.

While it’s not my first column here at the blog, I did want to take a moment to extend a welcome to all of you before I huck my wares. “For Whom the Blog Tolls” is my own little corner of the FM digital universe where I’ll be discussing the things I’m working on here at FM (magazines, conventions, interviews, office drama, events) as well as whatever it is that I’m having fun with and think you might want to know about as well (books, movies, comics, video games, fashion models). Not everything here will have to do with classic monsters, but the idea is that you get to understand what your EDitor is all about. Some posts might be long, in-depth reviews while others will be barely longer than a tweet, just catching you up on where we are with certain projects. So welcome. Enjoy.

You read that right. I just finished an exclusive interview with WWE Superstar and Monster Kid, Cm Punk. As a fellow Chicago boy and lifelong wrestling superfan I’ve followed his career since he was an independent sensation in Roh and cheered him as he rose the ranks and became the biggest name in Pro Wrestling/Sports Entertainment.
Punk was kind enough to take the time to sit down and chat with me about growing up loving monsters. We talked about his earliest run-ins with the monster world, his favorites, what terrified him (spoiler: Lon Sr.), torture porn (another spoiler: not a fan), horror literature, comics, his collection, and more. And it’s a perfect fit for our Halloween issue that features the monster movies of Santo, Blue Demon, Mil Mascaras and the rest of the Mexican wrestlers known as Luchadors. One of these days I’m going to rub the back of my neck, and I’ll finally feel that implant that the gaming industry has managed to sneak onto my body during one of the alcohol-induced benders of my youth. At some point, in between the 11th and 12th shot of Wild Turkey, I was hauled into a van and chipped like a bear in Yellowstone Park so that my brainwaves can be scanned and a game that somehow manages to scratch every weird itch I have can be developed and released. It first happened in the early 2000s with Bloodrayne, a title featuring a feisty redheaded vampire clad in black leather slaughtering the Third Reich, and now it’s happening again with Guacamelee, which combines Metroidvania-structured platforming with the dizzying delirium of lucha libre cinema.

With a ridiculous title that sounds like it could have come straight from one of those 1960s Mexican wrestler-superhero-horror movies (like Samson vs. The Vampire Women, or Santo and Blue Demon vs. The Monsters), Syfy’s latest original movie, Chupacabra vs The Alamo, indeed offers a similar cheesy but fun Mexican/Southwestern pop-culture/horror flair, beyond its moniker. Again borrowing from the public domain/urban legend bestiary, Syfy this time uses as its title monster the chupacabra — a legendary beast that has been reported throughout Latin America and the American Southwest, and that has been said to have attacked and sucked the blood [...]...

It’s hard not to be excited for the eventual release of Aztec Warrior, seeing as it’s set to combine the skills of Black Dynamite’s delightful director Scott Sanders and character acting’s patron saint Luis Guzman for a ridiculous tale of warring Mexican professional wrestlers. But, due to some concept art for the film that Twitch posted today, suddenly everyone’s feelings about the film might be a lot more confused. Sure, this poster titled ‘Aztec Warrior vs. The Office Robot’ looks pretty dang awesome, but what the heck are we actually looking at? Yep, you guessed it, that’s an artist’s rendering of Luis Guzman wearing a suit and a lucha libre mask while facing off with Robocop’s haywire robot Ed-209. The question that any sane person must be asking after seeing this image is, “What exactly does a giant robot have to do with a movie about warring professional wrestlers...

Director Scott Sanders turned the blaxploitation film on its head with the deliciously tongue in cheek Black Dynamite and now he is doing the same to the luchador with Aztec Warrior. Sanders begins principal photography today on the Pantelion backed film starring Luis Guzman in the title role with Terry Crews (The Expendables) and Mexican comedian Eugenio Derbez in support. Sanders cites cult hits such as Santo and Blue Demon vs Frankenstein and Mil Mascara vs. The Aztec Mummy as key influences while noting that they've brought in Uruguyan effects house Aparato - the folks behind hit viral video Panic Attack that launched director Fede Alvarez's career - to juice up the quality of the special effects. And why do they need effects? FM's EDitor heeds Forry's lesson: Make sure you always properly dress-up for special occasions. Preparing for Mil Mascaras' induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.
This past weekend you humble EDitor braved the masses in Miami to see a phenomenon which horror fans already know: That which is dead cannot die.
Yes, on April 1 The Undertaker defeated Triple H for the second straight year. The win moves ‘Taker’s undefeated streak at Wrestlemania to 20-0. While there was much debate amongst the crowd as to the potential outcome, it always felt that The Dead Man was the odds-on favorite to get the ‘W’. The match wasn’t just any match, but the always electric Hell in a Cell steel cage extravaganza. The match was easily one of the two most intense matches of the evening (right up next to Rock v Cena) with much of the crowd not even using their seats for the duration.

Albuquerque, N.M. -- Defiantly waving an Arizona state flag, the self-described American patriot leaps into an octagon-shaped ring amid blaring music and loud boos from an overwhelmingly Latino audience, who hold aloft signs in Spanish supporting his masked Mexican opponents.
"My name is Rj Brewer and I'm from Phoenix, Arizona," the wrestler proclaims in a video of a recent match provided by the promoter. Taunts from inside the arena get louder.
He proceeds to rail against Mexican beer and to demand that people speak English. Then he points to the message painted on the backside of his red trunks: "SB1070" – a reference to Arizona's controversial immigration law. The crowd, some wearing masks of their favorite Mexican wrestlers, shrieks ever louder. He then brags that his "mother," Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, is helping "save" America by pushing policies that limit immigration (he's not really her son).

Proving that comedy is truly the universal language (screw you, love), Will Ferrell, Gael Garcia Bernal, Diego Luna and others appear in the trailer for what appears to be a new comedy western, Casa de mi Padre, which Mrs. Rodriguez across the hall assures us means "House of My Father, Quit Asking Me Questions about Spanish."
The news is sure to get someone good and riled up about taking their country back, as the actors, including gringo extraordinaire Ferrell, speak entirely in Spanish throughout the telenovela-style trailer. The only thing about this seemingly hilarious movie that could upset us, however, is if they don't find a way to shoehorn in some suit-wearing masked luchadores.
Please give us an El Santo and/or Blue Demon cameo.

It looks like the Japanese have finally run out of (semi) sensible titles for their Ott horror kung-fu movies… We’ve already had such classics as Tokyo Gore Police, Robo-Geisha, Meatball Machine, Alien vs. Ninja, and now comes the epitomy of stupid title / over the top movie combos, with The Big Tits Zombie in 3D (aka Kyonyu Dragon), which is directed by Takao Nakano and stars Sora Aoi, Mari Sakurai, Io Aikawa, Risa Kasumi, and Tamayo.
Rena Jodo (Sola Aoi) is a stripper who just got back from Mexico and she has been offered a gig at a hot spring resort. When she arrives, she finds a deserted country town. There’s hardly anyone in the audience at the strip club and all the other strippers, including Ginko (Risa Kasumi), Maria (Mari Sakurai), Nene (Tamayo) and Dana (Io Aikawa) are all bored stiff. Unrepentant trash? You bet, but gleefully so. Director Takao Nakano is about to unleash Japanese Av star Sola Aoi (Sora Aoi, 蒼井そら) against hordes of the undead in his film adaptation of Rei Mikamoto's cult manga Kyonyo Dragon and we've got your first look at the film with a gallery of stills below. Though spattered with blood, these are mostly work safe. Whether that's consolation or disappointment is entirely up to you. And Japanese cult film fans make sure to check back on April 18th as Twitch has just confirmed that we will be hosting the world premiere of the film's trailer then!
Big Tits Zombie in 3D!!!
Deadly Dd‐Cups!!!
A bloody Armageddon has begun!
Rena Jodo (Sola Aoi) is a stripper who just got back from Mexico and she has been offered a gig at a hot spring resort. When she arrives, she finds a deserted country town.

If only all press releases were as ridiculously fun as this one ...
Dear My Friends,
Are you already bored with the movies about girls in school uniforms swinging their weapons around? What? Ninja? Geisha girls? No, no, that's all way too old fashioned. But the waiting is over as we present an incredibly Japanese style of movie. And look, if you're bored with watching recent mass‐produced erotica and those grotesque movies, we are offering a new challenge, something awesome! Yes, 3D!
Our new movie is about pretty girls with big tits and zombies and it's in 3D! It will be absolutely the best movie you have ever seen. No mistake. It's a violent, action movie full of taboos. It's up to you to watch it or not. Are you ready?
You'll be convulsed with laughter at this previously unthinkable storyline brought to you by Tmc&Concept Film Co, Ltd.

A few years ago while researching a completely different subject, I stumbled on a hard cover copy of The Mexican Masked Wrestler And Monster Filmography written by Robert Michael “Bobb” Cotter and published by McFarland & Company Inc. Publishers. I threw the book in with all the other research material I needed, rushed home and completely ignored the paper I needed to write and devoured this book. Inside I discovered more depth in its tightly packed 90 pages than I had ever found on the subject in years of looking.
For years I have been a fan of this genre and had amassed a great deal of material thinking I might one day take a stab at writing a book on the subject. The late great Mexican wrestler El Santo had made so many movies that intrigued me, many alone and many with his colleagues Blue Demon and Mil Mascaras and these...

If you are a Luchadore aficionado, the mere mention of a title like Mil Mascaras Vs. The Aztec Mummy would have you salivating in anticipation of a good old fashioned butt kicking action adventure story with masked heroes who are not only champion wrestlers but also scientists, archaeologists, philosophers, and statesmen who have the ear of the very powerful – including the president of the United States. If you aren’t a fan, you are probably very confused right about now.
The Luchadores of Mexico have a long history of starring in quickie exploitation films, where in addition to the Aztec Mummy, they fought vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein, evil doctors, bloody apes, and just about anything else that the scriptwriters could conjure up. Most of these films stayed south of the border, but as some of the population moved El Norte, the movies naturally followed. (Fangoria covered the genre in several issues...

Cthulhu Unbound: Volume 2 edited by John Sunseri and Thomas Brannan, continues to inspire thrills from its nightmarish monstrosities with each short tale. Fifteen writers are again asked to create a world dominated by devilish creatures, the likes which author H.P. Lovecraft could only have imagined.
In the first volume, the breakneck pace came to a sudden halt by the numerous references to H.P. Lovecraft’s mythology. As a reader, I would sometimes have to stop and look up these citations to understand the story better. In this volume though, the writers concentrated less on the obscure references and more on elevating the suspense and atmosphere; which were the two elements Lovecraft concentrated on in his works. The best usage of the two is in “New Fish” by A. Kiwi Courters. A new inmate arrives at an isolated prison island. The other prisoners soon discover he is performing satanic rituals to conjure up a bloodthirsty demon.
