The first entry – “USS Callister” – aired back in 2017 as the Netflix show’s Season 4 premiere. The entry immediately jumped to the top of most fan’s rankings of best “Black Mirror” episodes and has stayed there since. A sequel to the popular episode seemed likely and Season 7 is finally delivering the goods.

But what happened in the “Star Trek” inspired first outing of the Callister? Here’s what you need to remember before diving into the sequel – “USS Callister: Into Infinity” – when Season 7 premieres.

Who Is Robert Daly?

Review: Since Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror moved from the UK’s Channel 4 to Netflix in 2016, we have been lucky to get four seasons and the interactive movie Bandersnatch. The last foray into the surreal anthology was in 2023, which offered a mix of almost feature-length tales that felt a bit underwhelming compared to the legacy the series had built for itself. The seventh volume of Black Mirror debuts on Netflix today and is a return to the powerful storytelling we saw in the early years of the series. Bringing back spin-offs and continuations of beloved entries, this may be the most diverse mix of story tones and themes, all tied to the ongoing theme of technological horror that is just slightly askew from what could really happen.

As an anthology series, the episodes of Black Mirror are pretty much standalone (with the exception of some shared universe easter eggs)… until now. Season 7 featured not one but two follow-ups to previous entries, including a sequel to one of the most acclaimed episodes in the series: USS Callister. Although USS Callister: Into Infinity doesn’t reach the new frontiers of its predecessor, it is a consistently entertaining entry that will have audiences swept away in its adventure.

Charlie Brooker’s dark satire anthology series “Black Mirror” is back for Season 7 with a new crop of conflicts.

“Black Mirror” will have six brand-new episodes, created by Brooker who also writes the series while working with a slate of directors. The episode descriptions have now been released ahead of the season premiere, which includes the buzzy sequel to the sci-fi adventure “USS Callister” titled “USS Callister: Into Infinity” and starring Cristin Milioti, Billy Magnussen, and Jimmi Simpson. The trio previously starred in the 2017 “USS Callister” episode with Jesse Plemons and Michaela Coel, which also featured the voice of Aaron Paul and an uncredited cameo by Kirsten Dunst. Black Mirror has been running since 2011 and has carved out a strong niche for itself among viewers who crave cautionary Twilight Zone-esque tales which often revolve around technology gone wrong.

At least, that's what Black Mirror is usually like. But with its previously released sixth season, the show expanded into new territory by having several episodes focus on the supernatural instead of modern-day technology parables. This made for a bit of a mixed viewing experience, since werewolves and the like are not something fans normally associate with Black Mirror.
