7 Must-Watch Sci-Fi Shows on Netflix Right Now
Image
As the Netflix library balloons, it can be hard to figure out just where to start when you want something in a specific genre.

The streamer has a large collection of top-tier sci-fi shows on offer for fans of the genre, so where do you begin? Do you go with some strong international offerings made exclusively for Netflix? Do you start with all-time classics of the genre? It can all be a bit daunting.

Luckily, we’ve pared it down to seven great options to check out if you’re yearning for a new sci-fi show to sink your teeth into.

“Dark” (Credit: Netflix) Dark

“Dark” remains to this day the best original offering Netflix has ever released. It is often pitched as a German “Stranger Things,” but that is a wildly reductive way to describe one of the all-time great time travel stories. The three-season show explores a town through three time periods,...

‘All American’ Showrunners Break Down Kj’s Choice and That Season 7 Cliffhanger
Image
Spoilers ahead for “All American” Season 7, Episode 13

In some other showrunners’ hands, it would be tempting to end Season 7 of “All American” by focusing on this long-running drama’s fan favorites rather than its new cast. That’s not the approach Nkechi Okoro Carroll and Jamie Turner took. It’s a deliberate choice that shows how committed they are to this new story and the central ethos of their show.

“While it’s a multi-generational show, always our entry point and main focus is through the lens of our youth. For us, bringing the story back around to the youth and how they deal with the fallout from the decisions the adults made was very much intentional,” Carroll told TheWrap.

Every season of “All American” has ended on a major cliffhanger, but Season 7’s is especially shocking. After spending a season chronicling the relationship between South Crenshaw High coach Jordan...

‘All American’s Showrunner Is “Optimistic” About Season 8 Renewal Chances
Image
The seventh season of All American is tantalizingly close to wrapping up its run with the season finale episode billed to air on Monday, May 5 on The CW. The sports drama has undergone enormous change during its current season, with changing plotlines, and the substitution of previous mainstays, including Daniel Ezra's Spencer James. Despite all the new faces, the show has been able to maintain its appeal with some beloved cast members from the show's past, most notably Samantha Logan's Olivia Baker and her twin brother, Jordan (Michael Evans Behling), returning to keep the show going, with Tamia "Coop" Cooper (Bre-z), also playing a major role.

Nkechi Okoro Carroll serves as showrunner on All American, and ahead of the season 7 finale episode, has offered an insight into the sports drama's renewal chances. Carroll, while speaking with Deadline, revealed that she is"optimistic" about All American season 8 happening. To emphasize her faith,...

‘The First Time I Never Met You’ Short Film Review
Image
Stars: Eric Kole, Renee Bailey, Osy Ikhile, Neferah-Jo Onilude, Kamaiyah Oppong, Victoria Shepherd, Christina Tam | Written and Directed by Eric Kole

In The First Time I Never Met You, writer/director Eric Kole crafts a short film that lingers long after the final frame… a gentle, aching meditation on the strange intimacy of strangers, and the profound connections we sometimes forge without ever exchanging a word.

At its heart, the film examines the magnetic pull between two people whose lives briefly intersect but never quite collide. Kole’s screenplay is economical yet emotionally resonant, relying heavily on suggestion rather than exposition. Through fleeting glances, missed opportunities, and wordless longing, The First Time I Never Met You evokes a full spectrum of emotions with remarkable efficiency, a testament to Kole’s strength in visual storytelling.

Stylistically, the film pays careful attention to framing and pacing. Each shot feels deliberate, capturing the small but meaningful moments that,...

8 Reasons ‘All American’ Should Be Renewed for Season 8
Image
We are heading into the dreaded part of the TV season for every TV fan when networks decide which of our favorite shows they’ll be keeping around for the next TV season, and which we’ll have to say goodbye to. All American is one of those shows that still doesn’t know its fate for the 2025-26 TV season. Deadline reports that there’s a 50/50 percent chance the show will continue with a Season 8, but that means there’s an equal chance the show won’t be coming back. All American overhauled its cast this season, keeping series regulars Michael Evans Behling, Greta Onieogou, and Bre-z, but otherwise shifting focus to a new generation of Crenshaw and Beverly High School students chasing their dreams like the original vortex. The new season introduced us to Kj (Nathaniel Logan McIntyre) and his father, Cassius (Osy Ikhile), who moved from L.

All American season 7 is coming to Netflix very soon
Image
You don't have to wait too much longer to watch All American season 7 on Netflix!

Thanks to Netflix's list of new shows coming in May, we know that All American season 7 is coming to Netflix shortly after the season finale airs on The CW. As things stand, the All American season 7 release date on Netflix will be on Tuesday, May 13.

The All American season 7 finale is scheduled to air on Monday, May 5, so the new season will be added to Netflix in the United States just eight days later.

Pardon me, but I'm getting a little nostalgic thinking about all the other seasons of The CW shows that used to be released on Netflix under that partnership.

It seems like it's been so long since the glory days of the Netflix-cw deal that brought new seasons of The CW shows to Netflix just eight days after the season finale. That...

"We’re Figuring It Out": 'All American' Season 8 Gets Uncertain Update From Warner Bros. Boss
Image
The seventh season of the sports drama, All American, is currently airing on The CW. While there has been a sea of change for the new season, the show still maintains an audience despite the exit of several original cast members, including Daniel Ezra's Spencer James. These departures meant that the show had to creatively pivot, relying more on guest stars and a new group of characters. These big changes to the long-running sports drama is also a reflection of current budgetary constraints for the show. With Season 7 of All American nearing its conclusion, conversations are turning to whether the show will be renewed for an eighth season.

In an interview with Deadline, Chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group, Channing Dungey, spoke to the show's renewal chances with its budgetary numbers as well. With a license fee that's said to be within the ballpark of $1 million an episode,...

USS Callister director Toby Haynes hopes to complete the trilogy
Image
The seventh season of the anthology series Black Mirror dropped onto the Netflix streaming service earlier this month – and among its six episodes, for the first time in Black Mirror history, there was a sequel! The season 7 episode USS Callister: Into Infinity is a follow-up to the popular season 4 episode USS Callister, and Toby Haynes, who directed both of the USS Callister episodes, has revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he’s hoping to make this a trilogy!

Created and written by Charlie Brooker, Black Mirror is an anthology series that taps into our collective unease with the modern world, with each stand-alone episode a sharp, suspenseful tale exploring themes of contemporary techno-paranoia leading to an unforgettable – and sometimes unsettling – conclusion. Without questioning it, technology has transformed all aspects of our lives; in every home; on every desk; in every palm – a plasma screen; a monitor; a Smartphone – a Black...

Cristin Milioti Reveals Whether She Would Return For Another Episode of Black Mirror
Image
The following article contains spoilers for Black Mirror Season 7, Episode 6, "USS Callister: Into Infinity"

Cristin Milioti reprises her role of Nanette Cole in the newly released season of Black Mirror, seemingly concluding her character's arc from Season 4. However, Milioti isn't completely shutting the door on a potential return to the hit anthology series.

Milioti and most of the cast from the fan-favorite Season 4 episode, "USS Callister", returned for Black Mirror's first-ever sequel episode in the newly released Season 7, providing some potential closure to a story series creator Charlie Brooker had been longing to finish. However, the feature-length sequel episode, "USS Callister: Into Infinity", may not be the end, according to Milioti. The ending of "USS Callister: Into Infinity" sees Nanette's clone finally escape the world of Infinity, having merged with her physical body in the real world. While her crew escapes as well, they appear to be stuck in Nanette's brain,...

The ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 episodes ranked, from worst to first
Image
Season 7 of Black Mirror dropped April 10 on Netflix after a two-year break. English showrunner Charlie Brooker wrote or cowrote all of the episodes, as usual. He's a five-time Emmy winner for writing and producing "San Junipero" in 2017, writing and producing "USS Callister" in 2018, and producing "Bandersnatch" in 2019. He received a sixth career Emmy nomination last year for writing "Joan Is Awful," but lost to Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer).

Speaking of "Bandersnatch" and "USS Callister," Season 7 marks the first time Black Mirror has revisited previous storylines in the form of cameo and a sequel, respectively. Will Poulter's computer programmer character Colin Ritman was featured in the interactive "Bandersnatch" and now returns with a small role in "Plaything." Meanwhile, "USS Callister: Into Infinity" is a full-on sequel to the original outer space installment, with Cristin Milioti and Jimmi Simpson reprising their crew members of the titular starship.

As for the other new episodes,...

Classic Black Mirror episode "USS Callister" almost got a full spinoff show
Image
Black Mirror season 7 is here, folks! The dark anthology series has returned for six new episodes, including the show's first-ever sequel episode, "USS Callister: Into Infinity," which continues the saga of the characters first introduced in the season 4 episode "USS Callister."

That original episode remains one of the standout entries of the entire series. It follows shy programmer Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), who steals DNA from his coworkers and codes their consciousness into his very own, idyllic video game. He essentially keeps them trapped inside a space-sci-fi universe very reminiscent of Star Trek, where he is in charge. The installment won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Television Movie.

For a few years, fans have been pleading for a follow-up episode. While the original ended with something of a definitive conclusion, there remained plenty of space for more adventures. I mean, we are introduced to the voice of Gamer691 (voiced...

‘Black Mirror’: Everything to remember about the original ‘USS Callister’ before watching new follow-up
Image
More than seven years ago, Black Mirror's fourth season introduced a dark take on Star Trek with the fan-favorite episode "USS Callister." This week, with the launch of the Netflix sci-fi anthology's seventh season, most of the cast is back for a sequel.

The final episode of Season 7, "USS Callister: Into Infinity," catches up with the surviving members of the crew. They may have escaped a dire fate before, but now they need to figure out what comes next.

To get you ready for the sequel, here’s everything you need to remember about the original "USS Callister."

What happened in the original "USS Callister" episode?

Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons), a deranged programmer for Callister Inc., used his skills to digitally clone several of his coworkers and place them into Infinity, the massively multiplayer game that their company produces.

The digital clones of Nanette Cole (Cristin Milioti), James Walton...

‘Black Mirror: USS Callister’ Recap: What to Remember Before the Sequel
Image
A reuniting adventure with the crew of the USS Callister is imminent in “Black Mirror.”

The first entry – “USS Callister” – aired back in 2017 as the Netflix show’s Season 4 premiere. The entry immediately jumped to the top of most fan’s rankings of best “Black Mirror” episodes and has stayed there since. A sequel to the popular episode seemed likely and Season 7 is finally delivering the goods.

But what happened in the “Star Trek” inspired first outing of the Callister? Here’s what you need to remember before diving into the sequel – “USS Callister: Into Infinity” – when Season 7 premieres.

Who Is Robert Daly?

At the beginning of the episode, Robert Daly (Jesse Plemons) comes off as the William Shatner-esque captain of the USS Callister. But it isn’t long before Daly’s confident captain persona is revealed to be a farce, part of the lifelike simulation he’s running.

Black Mirror Season 7 TV Review: The anthology is back with a sequel and unique original tales
Image
Plot: Charlie Brooker’s dark, satirical anthology series will return in 2025 with six brand new episodes, including a sequel to the sci-fi adventure USS Callister.

Review: Since Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror moved from the UK’s Channel 4 to Netflix in 2016, we have been lucky to get four seasons and the interactive movie Bandersnatch. The last foray into the surreal anthology was in 2023, which offered a mix of almost feature-length tales that felt a bit underwhelming compared to the legacy the series had built for itself. The seventh volume of Black Mirror debuts on Netflix today and is a return to the powerful storytelling we saw in the early years of the series. Bringing back spin-offs and continuations of beloved entries, this may be the most diverse mix of story tones and themes, all tied to the ongoing theme of technological horror that is just slightly askew from what could really happen.

Black Mirror: USS Callister: Into Infinity Review — A Worthwhile but Imperfect Return to the Universe
Image
As an anthology series, the episodes of Black Mirror are pretty much standalone (with the exception of some shared universe easter eggs)… until now. Season 7 featured not one but two follow-ups to previous entries, including a sequel to one of the most acclaimed episodes in the series: USS Callister. Although USS Callister: Into Infinity doesn’t reach the new frontiers of its predecessor, it is a consistently entertaining entry that will have audiences swept away in its adventure.

Black Mirror: USS Callister: Into Infinity Review

This episode picks up after the events of the first episode, with the digital crew of the USS Callister free in the metaverse of the VR game Infinity, now fighting for their existence against human players and their real-life counterparts. As the title suggests, expanding the scope of the setting allows Into Infinity to be among the most ambitious in the show’s history, with...

Black Mirror season 7 release date, time, what to expect
Image
Charlie Brooker was on to something when he created Black Mirror, a British anthology series that explores the dark side of technology and its impact on modern society. While initially a Channel 4 series, the show gained international recognition after Netflix picked it up, allowing Brooker to expand his vision even further. Six seasons have been released so far, with a highly anticipated seventh season set to be released on the streaming platform soon. We're talking about a batch of new episodes available to stream tomorrow!

Unlike the previous season, which had five episodes, Black Mirror season 7 will feature one additional episode, bringing the total to six episodes. This marks the first time since the fourth season that the show has featured this many episodes. Brooker has referred to this installment as having a touch of "Og Black Mirror." Personally, that sounds like something I'd be really excited to watch,...

Charlie Brooker Wanted a Return to ‘O.G. Black Mirror’ in Season 7 — With AI and a ‘USS Callister’ Sequel
Image
Over a decade into making “Black Mirror,” creator Charlie Brooker’s goal was to make episodes that felt like “O.G. Black Mirror.”

“Last season started out as a season called ‘Red Mirror,’ they were all going to be horror, crime, supernatural stories, etc. And then I inconveniently thought up the episode ‘Joan is Awful,’ which was none of those things and was a ‘Black Mirror’ episode,” Brooker told TheWrap.

“[This year,] I wanted every story to be about the kind of technical breakthrough that explodes into some characters’ lives and upends everything,” he added.

“That’s the basic starting point — it was back to basics.”

Brooker quite literally went back to basics by pursuing a sequel episode for “USS Callister,” which first debuted in 2017 with Season 4, which he said the original episode naturally called for. “They’d literally flown to a wormhole, and we’re in a whole new universe, and...

'How Could You Revisit That:' Black Mirror Creator Teases More Sequel Episodes
Image
A beloved episode of Black Mirror is getting the sequel treatment in the show's upcoming seventh season. Series creator Charlie Brooker recently revealed that more sequel episodes may be coming.

Brooker, the Emmy-winning creator of Black Mirror, is back with a new season of his hit anthology series, which will contain the show's first-ever sequel episode. "USS Callister: Into Infinity" serves as a follow-up to the fan-favorite season four entry, "USS Callister", and according to Brooker, it may be the first of many. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Brooker revealed that he has a keen interest in returning to older episodes, which could mean more sequels down the line.

"There’s a degree of freedom within the format," he explained. "We’ve done a sequel for the first time this season. We’re now looking at old episodes and thinking, 'How could you revisit that idea?' As long as it’s interesting,...

An Immersive Video Game Takes a Nasty Turn in New ‘Black Mirror’ Season 7 Sneak Peek
Image
Black Mirror Season 7 is taking the viewers aboard the USS Callister once again! “USS Callister” was originally part of Black Mirror Season 4 and was set in the twisted sci-fi world of Robert Daly, played by Jesse Plemons. The episode featured Christine Miliotias Nanette Cole, a programmer trapped in Daly’s virtual game where he controlled digital versions of his colleagues. While the original episode ended with Daly’s character possibly dying, the fate of the others was left unresolved. But Black Mirror Season 7 promises to pick up right where things left off.

This marks the first time Netflix’s dystopian anthology series is revisiting a previous episode. The sequel, titled “USS Callister: Into Infinity,” will feature Milioti reprising her role along with Billy Magnussenas Karl, Milanka Brooks as Elena, and Osy Ikhile as Nate. In an interview with Deadline, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brookerrevealed that he always wanted to follow...

'I’d Say There’s a Little Less Dystopia': Black Mirror Creator Says Season 7 Won't Be as Bleak
Image
Black Mirrorcreator Charlie Brooker recently revealed that the seventh season of his hit anthology series will be far more "emotive" and "vulnerable" than longtime viewers may be accustomed to.

Black Mirror has never shied away from taking viewers to dark places, as the anthology series often offers a bleak vision of the future regarding the potential of technology. While the series has had its moments where happiness wins the day with episodes like "San Junipero" or "Hang the DJ", the series generally opts for darker outlooks on the future, with warnings of how certain technologies may negatively impact how people live their lives and interact with others. However, the seventh season may be a break from the doom and gloom of previous seasons, according to Brooker. In an interview with The Guardian, Brooker revealed that the newest season has more "emotive" and vulnerable" episodes and that there won't be as...

Black Mirror season 7 will return to the show's roots
Image
Next month, Netflix will release the seventh season of Black Mirror, its dystopian sci-fi anthology series from Charlie Brooker. Black Mirror has been running since 2011 and has carved out a strong niche for itself among viewers who crave cautionary Twilight Zone-esque tales which often revolve around technology gone wrong.

At least, that's what Black Mirror is usually like. But with its previously released sixth season, the show expanded into new territory by having several episodes focus on the supernatural instead of modern-day technology parables. This made for a bit of a mixed viewing experience, since werewolves and the like are not something fans normally associate with Black Mirror. But with season 7, the show is getting back to its roots.

"I do feel the show can constantly evolve – like the last season, we had episodes that went supernatural, it was horror. That was almost like a palate cleanser," Brooker told...

'Star Trek' Fans Will Be Upset by 'Black Mirror's 'USS Callister' Sequel
Image
We're just two weeks out from the anticipated premiere of Black Mirror Season 7 on Netflix, and if Star Trek fans were hoping for more fun in the "USS Callister" sequel episode "Polygon," prepare to be disappointed. The long-awaited sequel will be the sixth and final episode of the new season, which debuts April 10, 2025.

Speaking with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker and director Toby Haynes dished on all things "Polygon," which deviates from "USS Callister" in the sense that it's not a take on Star Trek like the original, but rather "feels a bit Return of the Jedi." That's right, while the first one was a spin on Gene Roddenberry's classic series, the sequel will instead examine things through a George Lucas-like lens. "Obviously the first one was riffing on Star Trek and this one is slightly riffing on Star Wars," Brooker said, adding:

"That...

Everything We Know About 'Black Mirror' Season 7
Image
The British anthology series Black Mirror has captivated fans since it launched in 2011. Created by Charlie Brooker, the sci-fi, high-tech-charged, The Twilight Zone-like anthology series moved to Netflix after its first two series when four more were released in 2016, 2017, 2019, and, after a long wait, 2023. There was also the 2014 “White Christmas” special starring Jon Hamm and the interactive movie Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. Each season offers unique, standalone stories that run the gamut, serving as cautionary tales about technology taken too far.

Almost two years after the sixth season graced fans with a mixed bag of episodes, including the stand-out “Beyond the Sea” episode starring Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett as astronauts in space able to transfer their consciousnesses to body replicas back on Earth, a seventh season is forthcoming. And it promises to be wild in more ways than one.
