A Very Backstreet Holiday is not moving forward at ABC.
The special was filmed earlier this month in Los Angeles, but the network has decided to nix the project amid allegations that singer Nick Carter raped a 17-year-old during the band's 2001 tour.
It was set to air on December 14 and featured Carter, Aj McLean, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, and Howie Dorough as they celebrated the festive season.
It would have featured several songs from their "A Very Backstreet Christmas" album, alongside special guests including Seth Rogen, Meghan Trainor, Rob Riggle, Nikki Glaser, Ron Funches, and Atsuko Okatsuka.
Shannon "Shay" Ruth alleged in a newly filed lawsuit and press conference live-streamed on Facebook that Carter sexually assaulted her when they met backstage at a concert in 2001.
“The last 21 years have been filled with pain, confusion, frustration, shame and self-harm that are a direct result of Nick Carter raping me,” Ruth said during the press conference.

Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka is bringing her twerk-friendly funny to Quibi with the woke Japanese game show appropriately titled Let’s Go Atsuko! from National Lampoon and PalmStar Media.
In the new series, Game master Okatsuka will lead two civilian contestants through the surreal universe inside her grandma’s fridge. In every episode, each contestant — perhaps unwisely — will tell Okatsuka one thing they love and one thing they fear. These facts can and will be used against them to create tailor-made challenges that test the players’ “street smarts.”
The forthcoming series for the short-form streaming platform shares the name of her weekly podcast on the Forever Dog network and monthly live show at Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles. Past guests include Andy Richter, Aparna Nancherla, Lauren Lapkus, Nicole Byer, Guy Branum, Nik Dodani, Aparna Nancherla, Wyatt Cenac, Judah Friedlander, Sasheer Zamata, Baron Vaughn, among others.

National Lampoon, which turns 50 this year, has inked a series deal with Quibi for eight episodes of Let’s Go, Atsuko! A (woke) Japanese Game Show based on an eponymous live show and podcast by comedian and actress Atsuko Okatsuka.

“Saturday Night Live” showrunner Lorne Michaels has yet to comment on the racist and homophobic remarks made by newly hired cast member Shane Gillis, but comedians and actors are expressing their condemnation on social media, some even asking that he be fired from the show.

On November 1, the 2018 IndieWire Honors ceremony will celebrate seven filmmakers and actors for their achievement in creative independence. Los Angeles-based comedian Atsuko Okatsuka will host the ceremony.
Looking at the lineup of creators and actors being honored at this year’s IndieWire Honors event, host Atsuko Okatsuka is excited, because the accomplished actor, filmmaker, and comedian sees it as a sign of how things are different, when it comes to who’s getting to tell stories today.
“More and more, the gatekeepers are changing, and so it is becoming a little more democratic in that the mass audience is actually being heard,” she said, “and that’s why more unique and diverse voices have been able to write and direct.”
This is reflected in part by the honorees selected for this year’s awards, including “Black Panther” director Ryan Coogler, “Vox Lux” star Natalie Portman, and “Maniac” co-creator Cary Joji Fukunaga.

The whitewashing controversy that plagued recent releases like “Ghost in the Shell,” “The Great Wall,” and 2015’s “Aloha,” is merely one symptom of the racism many Asian American actors face in Hollywood, The Guardian reported in a thorough survey of working Asian American actors. Most said they were very rarely considered for leading roles, and often asked to play offensive caricatures.
Yale School of Drama graduate Pun Bandhu, who is Thai American, has a healthy roster of doctors, lawyers, and scientists on his IMDb page. “We’re the information givers. We’re the geeks. We’re the prostitutes,” he said. “We’re so sick and tired of seeing ourselves in those roles.”
As with sexism, the problem is often apparent in the casting breakdowns. One called for an Asian American actor to be “focused while he composes his drawing…Makes you wonder what kind of life he had back in Asia.

Childhood abuse affects its victims in myriad and often abstract ways. The disparate images and mysterious female voiceover that provide Travis Mathews’ “Discreet” its illusory opening do eventually come together, like the concentric cycles of abuse and pain experienced by its woeful protagonist, Alex (Jonny Mars).
A drifter and filmmaker, Alex travels the country in a dark blue van shooting footage of highways. On a passing visit to his unstable mother, he learns that the man who abused him is living in a small cabin on the outskirts of the rural Texas town where his mother lives. Seeking out the older man, Alex finds a severely incapacitated John (Bab Swaffar), complete with an involuntary twitch in his left arm and a vacant stare.

Ott uses extreme- close-ups to make Cory's stream of consciousness feel all the more personal, despite his slightly shallow hopes and dreams: “What can I say? I'm a troublemaker. I've always wanted to be a rebel with no cause. I've always wanted to be a rock star too...”

Back in 2010, Mike Ott's second feature film, "Littlerock," made a considerable impression on the indie-film world. Beyond winning top awards at AFI Fest and Independent Film Festival of Boston, "Littlerock" won both the "Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You" prize at the Gotham Awards and the "Someone to Watch" award at the Independent Spirits -- pretty much the holy duo of support for an emerging American indie filmmaker. Two years later, Ott has followed up the promise that came with those accolades with "Pearblossom Highway," which had its world premiere at the just-wrapped Vienna International Film Festival last week before heading to AFI Fest for its American debut this past weekend. The film, in large part, continues both the themes and approach of "Littlerock," a risky move that pays off quite nicely. Ott again collaborates with Atsuko Okatsuka (co-screenwriter and lead actress) and Cory Zacharia...

Like Littlerock, writer-director Mike Ott's previous film, Pearblossum Hwy focuses on twentysomethings who are unwillingly stuck living in a secluded California desert town. Economic limitations weigh heavily upon their situations because without decent employment opportunities they cannot afford to move elsewhere. Besides, no matter how much they hate it, this is where their only family roots are grounded... Anna (Atsuko Okatsuka) lives with her aunt (Sumiko Muto) and uncle (Mio Takada). They are traditional Japanese adults who stress the importance of studying and working hard. Anna is preparing to take the U.S. citizen exam and she works at uncle's nursery, but her first priority is raising enough money to visit her ailing grandmother in Japan. We can only assume that the paychecks from the nursery are not enough to cover Anna's airfare to Japan, so it comes as no surprise when her other occupation is revealed. Anna hates...

The AFI Film Fest (11.01-11.08) have announced the line-ups for our favorite sections at the fest in the Young American selections and New Auteurs section and they’ve managed to stack up on titles that are amongst the year’s best and which in the case of two films were mysteriously passed over by the likes of Telluride, Tiff and Nyff. Michel Franco’s After Lucia (see pic above) and Antonio Campos’ Simon Killer will be making the Los Angeles premieres accompanied by the best title to come out of the Main Comp at this year’s Cannes edition in Sergei Loznitsa’s In the Fog. This trio will be joined by a trio of gems that recently premiered at Tiff in: Maja Miloš’ Clip, Gabriela Pichler’s Eat Sleep Die and Tobias Lindholm’s A Hijacking. In the Young American Selections we find some filmmakers (Sean Baker and Amy...

Title: Littlerock Writer-director: Mike Ott Starring: Atsuko Okatsuka, Cory Zacharia, Rintaro Sawamoto, Roberto Sanchez, Brett L. Tinnes, Ryan Dillon A nicely photographed and initially intriguing character study of a road trip gone awry, and a sibling pair of foreign travelers waylaid in a land foreign to them, “Littlerock” quickly fumbles away any sense of delicate engagement, and ends up a collection of posed and meandering down-tempo moments in search of an inciting incident or clarifying signifier. Pleased with itself more than it ought to be, the movie seems to believe or feel that dawdling for dawdling’s sake is in the end its own kind of precious artistic statement, a fact only underscored...

"The sleeper hit of the 2010 film-festival and indie-awards circuit, Mike Ott's moody micro-budget Littlerock patiently observes the California road trip of college-aged Japanese siblings Atsuko (Atsuko Okatsuka, also the film's co-writer) and Rintaro (Rintaro Sawamoto)." Karina Longworth in the Voice: "En route to Manzanar (the filmmakers leave viewers to draw on their own knowledge, if any, of what that destination portends until the film's very end), their car breaks down in the tiny desert town of Littlerock, where they soon fall in with a local crowd of young layabouts."
"Amid the keggers and daytime bike rides is plenty of drug use, an overdue loan, and a menacing alpha-male bigot (Ryan Dillon)," notes Bill Weber in Slant, "but Ott uses the threat of violence as a mere layer of mood, keeping his focus on the mutable, and often unspoken, themes of identity and the nature of attempts to explore and redefine it…...

Tonight at the Hsbc offices in midtown was the Ifp’s Independent Film Week launch party. Attending were participating filmmakers, several of our 25 New Faces, and many folks from the New York production community. But flying in from L.A. were Mike Ott and Atsuko Okatsuka, whose Littlerock — winner of the Filmmaker-sponsored “Best Film at a Theater Playing Near You” Gotham Award — premieres today at Cinema Village. Read Ray Pride on the movie here, and then check out the film. It’s highly recommended.

Hitting theaters in New York this Friday and expanding in September, Variance Films has premiered the trailer for Mike Ott's "Littlerock," which last December won the Gotham Award for "best film not playing at a theater near you." That's about to change. The second feature film from Ott, this heavily improvised film follows a Japanese brother (Rintaro Sawamoto) and sister (Atsuko Okatsuka, who also co-wrote the script) who find themselves ...

Littlerock gets it. An awful lot of writers treat the formative experiences of your teenage years (young love, self-discovery, all the rest of it) as life-changing moments that don't mean a thing in the long run. While that's grounded in truth - how many old girlfriends or college buddies are you still in touch with? - far too many of them turn this observation into something patronising. Don't worry, they say. I was young once. I thought I was something special. You'll get over it.Littlerock is different. Mike Ott's sophomore film tells the story of two Japanese teenagers, brother and sister Rintaro (Rintaro Sawamoto) and Atsuko (Atsuko Okatsuka). They've stopped off in the small town of the same name on their way to make a...
