After unexpectedly inheriting a mysteriously abandoned coastal property, Ben (Matt Whelan) packs up his family and travels to explore the place, bewildered about why his mother, Linda (Holly Shervey), had never mentioned its existence. However, her reason for secrecy soon becomes clear when the family accidentally frees the ancient, long-dormant creature that had terrorized the entire region for generations—including Ben’s own parents.

Jules (Luciane Buchanan) and her husband Ben (Matt Whelan) run a pet shop. It means they can be together as a family, with daughter Reia (Zara Nausbaum) helping out and even dog Archie doing his bit, but business isn’t great, so when they learn that Ben has re3ceived an unexpected inheritance, they wonder if it might be the solution they’ve been looking for. At first the overgrown, poorly preserved house doesn’t look as if it will be worth much, but when they see what’s at the back of it – a broad, steep-banked hidden cove on the highly desirable Oregon coast – they realise that they may have struck gold. They don’t make the mistake of moving there themselves – horror film risk number one – but do decide to stay there for a few days whilst they clean it up. Then Ben makes a different classic horror film mistake:.

Set in 1978, The Tank opens with Ben getting some news about his deceased mother. It appears his father left her coastal property in Hobbit’s Bay Oregon that she never told anyone about. He also finds out that rather than dying in a car accident, his father and sister drowned in said bay. Of course, you or I know better than to go near something like that because it never ends well. Ben, of course, packs up his wife Jules and their daughter Reia (Zara Nausbaum; The Other Side of Heaven 2: Fire of Faith) and goes to check it out.
Writer/director Scott Walker does throw a switch at viewers by having the house actually look like it’s been abandoned for decades. Boarded up, weathered, and overgrown with vines and other vegetation on the outside,...

Writer/Director Scott Walker (The Frozen Ground) evokes the ’80s creature feature for his sophomore film, The Tank. A simple, self-contained premise serves as the foundation for a creature effects showcase. While unique creature design and effects by Weta Workshop make for a compelling centerpiece, the simplistic storytelling undermines it by undercutting the tension and stakes.
Ben (Matt Whelan) and his wife, Jules (Lucianne Buchanan), run a small but bustling pet shop that doubles as daughter Reia’s (Zara Nausbaum) playground. Jules’s extensive knowledge of animals might come in handy when Ben learns that he’s inherited coastal property that has sat uninhabited like a dark family secret for decades. As the family travels to the estate to investigate and explore Ben’s inheritance, they unwittingly wake a long-dormant threat that’s terrorized the land and Ben’s ancestors for generations.

James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” swept the 21st annual Ves Awards Wednesday night in an unprecedented wave of dominance in every category, winning nine of its record-breaking 14 nominations, including the top photoreal feature, and the newest category, The Emerging Technology Award, for its innovative water toolset.
Although the prestigious visual effects honorary society has not been a reliable Oscar bellwether in recent years — picking the VFX winner only twice in the last six years — this now looks like a lock for the “Avatar” sequel.
Hosted by Patton Oswalt at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (from Netflix) — the favorite to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar — won the top animation trophy and took home three awards; Amazon’s “Thirteen Lives” snagged the supporting prize, and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” grabbed the episodic prize and also took home three awards.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” came out on top at the Visual Effects Society’s 2023 Ves Awards, held Wednesday evening at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
The James Cameron epic set a Ves record this year with 14 nominations in nine different categories, and it set a record for wins by coming out on top in every category in which it was nominated. By contrast, the original 2009 “Avatar” received 10 nominations and won five awards. The previous record for wins by a film was set by “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” at the first Ves Awards in 2003, when it won eight awards. (The show had fewer awards then than it does now.)

All3Media’s New Zealand production company South Pacific Pictures and Toronto-based Shaftesbury are co-producing the show, which will bow in 2020. The project was created by bestselling author Sarah-Kate Lynch, who is also the lead writer on the series. Peter Stebbings (“Wynonna Earp”) will direct.

“Narcos” has never been a simple show to process, especially for someone not embedded in this universe — there are many players, many complications, speaking in many languages, operating decades ago.
But it is one of the great examples of shows that have improved thanks to the opportunity to grow and evolve, and Season 3 continues that journey with an investment in human storytelling.

Pablo Escobar may be dead, but life goes on for Netflix’s Narcos series.
In fact, soon after the fallout of season 2, the online streamer went ahead and ordered a two-season renewal, thereby ensuring its hit crime saga will be with us until at least 2018. That’s a resounding vote of confidence for a show that’s now beginning to mosey into uncharted territory, but as today’s all-new trailer reveals, Pedro Pascal’s DEA agent Javier Peña is back, and he has the Cali Cartel firmly between his crosshairs.
In a post-Escobar world, the Drug Enforcement Administration has turned its attention toward that cartel and its so-called Four Kings: Damian Alcazar as Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela, Francisco Denis as Miguel Rodriguez Orejuela, Alberto Ammann as Pacho Herrera, and Pepe Rapazote as Chepe Santacruz Londono. Together, that foursome begins to spread its tentacles to New York City, and its up to...

The real-life figure that powered the first two seasons of “Narcos” may be gone, but it looks like the crime drama is already well on its way to another target.
Netflix released its first full look at Season 3 of the DEA-centered period show, which starts Pedro Pascal as Javier Peña, an agent who’s on to his next major investigation. This season, Peña has his sights set on the Cali Cartel, headed by a quartet of powerful ringleaders.

A departure from the pursuits of Pablo Escobar that highlighted Seasons 1 and 2, this trailer hints that Peña won’t be alone in this new fight. Standing up the cartel’s involvement in local law enforcement and national politics will mean getting help from both U.S. and Colombian task forces.
The network just had a big hit with another dark crime series, Jason Bateman’s “Ozark.” Co-starring Laura Linney, the first season focused on the unintended (and inevitable) consequences of money laundering, especially on the fabric of a family. For fans looking for more before Season 2 of that show becomes a reality, this seems like an ideal fix until then.
Pascal’s fellow “Narcos” Season 3 cast members also include Kerry Bishé, Michael Stahl-David, Damián Alcázar, Miguel Ángel Silvestre, Hélmer Herrera, and Matt Whelan.

American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story, the new 10-part docuseries on Amazon Prime, asks us to imagine its subject as the Don Draper of gentlemen's magazines. From humble origins, Hefner ascends the hierarchy of mid-century media, aided by a potent alchemy of ambition and chiseled instinct. He is – for the most part – amoral, though not without specific convictions. Stirred by Alfred Kinsey's seismic 1948 report, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male, he determined in his junior year of college that sexual taboos were not merely hypocritical, but fundamentally damaging. American popular...
