Baba Lenga is quite a character. When the unassuming bathroom attendant played by Dipo Ola is first introduced, he’s just trying to get through his thankless shift spraying cologne and handing out towels next to the toilets. He takes his job seriously, but not so seriously that, when push comes to shove, he will let a couple of hard-partying coke-heads snort a few lines. But a switch gets flipped when Baba spots that same couple in the back alley, and the aggro dude is getting a little too forceful with his hired “date.” It’s then that we see Baba’s dark side, and soon after we learn where it came from: This current U.K. bathroom attendant is a former child soldier from the Congo. His past is haunted, his secrets are black as night, and all he wants is to chase the light bursting from this adoring...

Showtime is moving Ethan Hawke’s The Good Lord Bird later in the year – a shift designed to put more context around the abolitionist miniseries as the focus sharpens on the issue of systemic racism in the U.S.
The Hawke drama was originally intended to premiere on August 9 but will now move its launch to October 4 in a slightly earlier slot – 9pm rather than 10pm.
The series, which is based on James McBride’s award-winning novel, is told from the point of view of Onion (Joshua Caleb Johnson), a fictional enslaved boy who becomes a member of John Brown’s motley family of abolitionist soldiers and eventually finds himself participating in the famous 1859 raid at Harpers Ferry. Brown’s raid failed to initiate the slave revolt he intended but was a key instigating event of the Civil War.

Showtime Moves Comey Miniseries to Before Presidential Election Following Cast and Producer Backlash
Showtime has officially moved the premiere date for its miniseries about former FBI Director James Comey and his tumultuous relationship with President Donald Trump to prior to the presidential election.
The move comes after backlash from the cast and crew, expressed in a letter written by series writer and director Billy Ray. In the letter, Ray said he was told that the decision to air the two episodes after the election was “made at the very highest levels of Viacom.”
“We all were hoping to get this story in front of the American people months before the coming election. And that was a reasonable expectation considering that we’d been given a mandate by the network to do whatever was necessary to deliver by May 15,” Ray wrote.
His and the cast’s wishes have now been granted, as the series will air over two consecutive nights on Sept. 27 and 28. News...

TV has never been more beautiful, more daring, and more dramatic, and that’s owed to the new level of talent being given a chance to redefine what might be possible within this medium today. Since the dawn of the 21st century, we’ve witnessed an incredible array of directors (some native to TV, some fleeing the fluctuating feature film world) come to episodic storytelling to discover its potential.

Charlie Brooker’s terrific Black Mirror Christmas special with Jon Hamm & Rafe Spall tells three very human tales of tech paranoia…
This review contains spoilers.
Charlie Brooker’s been hiding something. Beneath that hugely entertaining mantle of misanthropy and idiocy-skewering invective, beats the charitable heart of a man who wants us all to care a little bit more. If there’s a lesson to White Christmas - a trio of Black Mirror stories about the consequences of loneliness and ostracisation - it would be to stop, think, and empathise.
White Christmas’ first story introduces us to Matt (Jon Hamm, whose matinee idol good looks cast him perfectly as the kind of swaggering, smug Yank an intensely British drama like Black Mirror would instantly mistrust). Alongside his day job, Matt runs a seedy side-line as a pickup artist coach and wank conductor to a voyeuristic choir of online pervs.

Back in 2010, Bill Kelly sold his sci-fi script Timeless, which at one point had Philip Noyce attached to direct. Four years later, the project is finally set to find its way in front of cameras, and a new director has been named. Read on!
Per Deadline, UK director Carl Tibbetts is now in the director's chair, after recently making his feature debut with 2011's Retreat.
The story tracks a twenty-something surfer who sets out to build a time-travel machine after his wife dies in an accident. He taps a young Harvard physicist to help make the impossible a reality.
New financier Nicolas Veinberg and Defiant Pictures have come aboard, and Sunil Perkash (Salt, Enchanted, Premonition) will produce alongside Veinberg and Lucas Jarach. Relativity Media, which made the initial spec deal, is circling for domestic distribution.
Shooting is set to begin next spring in Gran Canaria, Spain, with casting currently under way.

Review Ryan Lambie Feb 19, 2013
Charlie Brooker's Black Mirror takes a nightmarish turn in its second episode. Here's Ryan's spoiler-filled review of White Bear...
Warning: the following contains spoilers.
"I think, with a lot of dramas, people come back to them hoping to see the same characters, and be assured by the same characters every week. You know what you're getting most of the time when you tune into a drama. What we always hoped with Black Mirror is that you don't know what you're getting..."
So said writer and series creator Charlie Brooker in a recent BAFTA Q&A, which took place after a private screening of series two's opening episode, Be Right Back. Of all the Black Mirror episodes we've seen so far, White Bear fulfilled that remit outlined above; its horror-infused drama leaves us unsure whom we can trust or what will happen next, and its last act is truly gut-wrenching.

In Carl Tibbetts’ debut film as a writer and director, he paints a portrait of a modern couple thrown into the most primitive of situations. While vacationing in a remote island cottage they had come to some eight years prior, Martin (Cillian Murphy) and Kate (Thandie Newton) are confronted with the true horrors of humanity when Jack (Jamie Bell) arrives to disturb their peaceful getaway.
The film starts out quietly, as Martin and Kate are delivered to their destination by Doug (Jimmy Yuill), the owner of the cottage, and they go about “enjoying” themselves. There is so much tension in these early scenes between the couple that I wondered why they would isolate themselves further from the world in an attempt to heal their collective wounds.
A wounded soldier (Jamie Bell) is found on the beach one morning by Martin and brought back to the cabin against Kate’s wishes.

Plot: Following a marital tragedy, Kate (Newton) and Martin (Murphy) return to a cabin located on an isolated island where they previously vacationed. However, upon rescuing a wounded young man named Jack (Bell), they soon find themselves ensnared by the stranger’s mysterious agenda.
Characters isolated in a remote setting and threatened by a force outside of their control has been a staple of the thriller genre since Agatha Christie first penned And Then There Were None in 1939. In the years since, the locations have evolved (summer camps, the ocean, space ships), but the threat often remains the same: an individual or collective entity picking the characters off one by one. It is an ideal archetype for preying on our fears; what could be scarier than inhabiting a location in which we don’t belong,...

I have to be honest; Retreat is not an easy film to review. The reason being is that this is a film best seen with as little prior knowledge as possible and it is rather difficult to discuss and review the film while remaining as spoiler free as possible. I shall do my best to not reveal much in terms of the plot, but you best just go check this film out, because it is a damn good one.
Retreat comes from co-writer/director Carl Tibbetts, this is his debut and I have to say for a debut this man knows his stuff! Usually you can tell when a film is someone’s first behind the camera, but not here. The film felt like it came from a seasoned veteran and that really speaks volumes in terms of Tibbetts talents and what he crafted here.

Director: Carl Tibbetts.

Retreat is a misnomer; this is a vacation from hell! Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton and Jamie Bell star in this film from first time director Carl Tibbetts. How did he get such a great cast on his first film? This holiday involves murder, infection and marital strife. Throw in a recent miscarriage and you have a grumpy time all round. Luckily there are some soft moments early, with the action begining in first third of the film. Released October 21st, Retreat is a psychological thriller that plays with the truth and viewers' perceptions of reality.
Kate (Newton) and Martin (Murphy) are dropped off at an isolated island for some soul searching and relationship mending. Kate is withdrawn, while Martin is oblivious to the issues at hand. Then, their quiet retreat is invaded by a private of the United Kingdom army. He is cut and bruised.

The Conspirator; Retreat; Mother's Day; Screwed; George Harrison: Living in the Material World
Considering the star power he still wields both in front of and behind the camera, it's extraordinary that Robert Redford's latest (admittedly preachy) drama The Conspirator (2010, Universal, 12) managed to come and go almost unnoticed in UK cinemas. The first salvo from the American Film Company, which has a remit to make "historically accurate" dramas, this solidly constructed and surprisingly engrossing affair concerns the kangaroo court set up in 1865 in the wake of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Called to defend the demonised Mary Surratt (Robin Wright) in whose boarding house the killers allegedly hatched their plot, Union war hero and upcoming lawyer Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) is forced to question his political loyalties, learning along the way that civil liberties are not to be disposed of lightly.

Steven Soderbergh turns his hand to the epidemic thriller with Contagion. Here’s Luke’s review of a film that’s spreading across cinemas in the UK...
It seems odd that over the course of the last month we have seen the release of Perfect Sense, Carl Tibbetts’ low-key three-hander Retreat, plus the ever-reliable Steven Soderbergh’s comparatively immense effort Contagion. Each, in its own way, attempts to portray the effect of the threat of global pandemic at the grass-roots level of the fractured inter-personal relationships of ordinary people, and each has something distinctly its own to say on the matter.
Yet while the British efforts operate creatively within the immovable confines of stringent budgets, Contagion boasts $60m production values and an ensemble cast as bulbously corpulent with A-list names as any Sodebergh has yet assembled. It is a shame, therefore, to report that Contagion, despite glimpses of promise, is...

The following is a reprint of our review from Fantasia. Writer/director Carl Tibbetts certainly didn't spare himself any narrative hurdles for his debut feature "Retreat." In fact, one could argue that it's nothing but narrative hurdles. The single setting film tosses together a psychological thriller, marital discord, sexual tension, an airborne virus and someone who may just be totally insane in a hearty stew that is unfortunately still somewhat flavorless. Curiously both overstuffed yet still empty, "Retreat" tries to be too many things at once and ultimately winds up having very little to show for the effort. When the film…...

A dramatic three-hander with a cast that belies its low-budget, Retreat stars Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton as Martin and Kate, a married couple whose relationship is on the rocks. In order to get their heads round a recent trauma, they head to a remote island in a bid to rekindle a lost spark of intimacy, staying in an isolated cottage a good boat journey from the mainland. They don’t have a particularly good time of it though, with the electricity generator failing and the Cb radio (their only contact with the mainland) malfunctioning soon after they arrive, and this bad time is made considerably worse when Jamie Bell turns up as Jack: a bloodied and mysterious soldier with a gun and Earth-shattering news about a global pandemic that’s killing everyone.

Filmmakers have continued to push boundaries and find new innovative ways to elicit the emotions of fear, disgust and horror from viewers. Since Alfred Hitchcock directors strived to provoke viewer’s nightmares, hidden fears, revulsions and terror of the unknown. Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, others have focused more on a plot about morbidity, serial killers, a disease/virus outbreak, surrealism and more. This year we see vampires, outbreaks, poltergeists, aliens, zombies, and psychological horror/character studies featured on our list.
What is considered to be a horror film has varied from decade to decade. These days, the term “horror” is applied to films which display more explicit gore, jump scenes/scares or supernatural content whereas early horror movies were largely based on classic literature of the gothic/horror genre, such as Dracula, Frankenstein, The Phantom of the Opera, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Sleeping Beauty (18)
(Julia Leigh, 2011, Aus) Emily Browning, Rachael Blake, Ewen Leslie, Peter Carroll. 101 mins
The outer limits of the service industry are explored in this strange anti-fairytale, as a student submits her unconscious body to the desires of sagging, wealthy old men. There's no prospect of a prince coming in any sense. Bravely elusive and surreally detached in the manner of Kubrick or Buñuel, it's occasionally spellbinding.
Real Steel (12A)
(Shawn Levy, 2011, Us) Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Dakota Goyo. 128 mins
Can Jackman train a robot to fight while reconnecting with his estranged son and his old flame? Or will this family-friendly amalgam of Rocky and Transformers subvert the formula of every fight movie ever?
The Three Musketeers (12A)
(Paul Ws Anderson, 2011, Ger/Fra/UK/Us) Logan Lerman, Matthew Macfadyen, Milla Jovovich. 110 mins

Billed by its writer-director Carl Tibbetts as a “claustrophobic psychological suspense thriller”, Retreat is a taut three-hander with an impressive cast even without considering its low budget. The leading trio are more commonly glimpsed in blockbusters these days with Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Inception), Thandie Newton (Mission Impossible II, 2012) and Jamie Bell (King Kong and the upcoming Tintin) all signing on for an intense four week shoot on location in a remote part of North Wales. Released to cinemas today – prior to a Blu-ray/DVD release on Monday – What Culture was invited to the set of the film just over a year ago, where we spoke to the principle cast and their surprisingly calm first-time director.
Tibbetts, a London-based former editor, appeared unflappable when we spoke, strange given that he was nearing the end of his first feature film. The movie and the shoot were described as “intense” more than once,...

Martin and Kate (Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton) are a thirty-something couple holidaying on a tiny remote island off the coast of the west coast of Scotland. A destination they’ve visiting in the past to escape their busy London lives, this trip represents an attempt to heal a broken marriage, caused partially by the loss of their child at birth.
At first their idyllic rented cottage offers the possibilities of that secure and intimate sanctuary they long for (even if the generator in the basement proves to be a little haphazard), but within a day of two, their peace is shattered in the form of an injured military man (Jamie Bell) named Jack. He appears to have rowed over from the mainland all by himself and alarms them with news that something terrible has happened back in civilisation, and they must do everything they can to bombard themselves from it.

A neat, tense thriller from a first time director that provides a decent role for Jamie Bell
Here is a workmanlike suspense thriller directed and co-written by newcomer Carl Tibbetts. Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton play an anxious couple making a tense return to an utterly secluded island; this is to be a "retreat" for them, a place to heal their emotional wounds. The Cb radio which is their only means of contacting the mainland goes dead, and then they encounter a sinister stranger played by Jamie Bell, who has a terrifying story to tell. Is it the truth? Or is it a manipulative lie? This is a neat, well-crafted three-hander, making good use of its location; it really is a meaty role for Bell, who lets rip in what might be his most eye-catching part since Billy Elliot.

Firstly, don't be fooled by the UK quad poster (adorned with biohazard insignia) and casting of Cillian Murphy - for better or worse, Carl Tibbetts' debut feature Retreat (2011) is in no shape or form a suitable partner piece to Danny Boyles' infected horror 28 Days Later (2002). Cillian Murphy is no stranger to the apocalypse. Having already survived an outbreak of a rage-fueled virus in "28 Days Later," the "Inception" and "Batman Begins" star is once again returning to a deadly wasteland in "Retreat," the Carl Tibbetts-directed thriller from Samuel Goldwyn Films hitting theaters on October 21, 2011.
Murphy stars alongside Thandie Newton as Martin and Kate, a couple who seclude themselves on an isolated island in the aftermath of a great personal tragedy. But their quiet journey for peace and introspection is rudely interrupted by the arrival of Jack (Jamie Bell), a mysterious stranger who washes ashore with dark tidings: if he's to be believed, a devastating airborne disease has broken out and is sweeping across Europe.
In this exclusive red-band clip from "Retreat," watch as Martin and Kate do their best to literally keep their heads on straight as Jack threatens their lives in the face of great terror.

Carl Tibbetts' Retreat ought to be better than it is, which is not to say it doesn't have its good points. It's a solid, well-made piece of work, an impressive debut feature and boasts a name cast contributing some memorable performances. Still, Retreat suffers from an odd flaw; it's hell-bent on setting up an atmosphere of nail-biting suspense, and it tries to do this by constantly bringing up a question about what's actually going on. But - trying to avoid spoilers - the question the film is posing and the question any attentive viewers will probably be asking are not the same, and it means Retreat never really becomes the terrifying little chamber piece it wants to be.Martin (Cillian Murphy, Inception, Batman: The Dark Knight)...
