Warning: Major spoilers for The Winter King episode 8 and The Warlord Chronicles books below!
The Winter King episode 8 takes a different approach to magic, implying it may not exist within the show's world. Nimue's "curse" in the show is revealed to be a lie, suggesting that magic is not real and she has no true magic abilities. While Merlin's visions may hint at the existence of magic, the show overall presents magic as underplayed and not a prominent feature.
The Winter King episode 8 suggests the show is taking a radically different approach to Merlin and the use of magic compared to the original King Arthur legend. While MGM+'s adaptation of Bernard Cornwell's Warlord Chronicles novels has been labeled as something of a Game of Thrones successor, it's very much setting its own course. The clash between Pagans and Christians threatens his plans for unity even further. Morgan goes to Powys to negotiate peace but instead witnesses Gorfydd executing Bishop Bedwin, escalating tensions between the kingdoms.
The Winter King episode 8 proves to Arthur that it's not easy being the unofficial king. It might be a job he never really wanted, but Arthur (Iain De Caestecker) is showing a natural knack for being a leader. The Winter King is a fresh and brutal adaptation of the King Arthur legend set in the Post-Roman Dark Age of Britain. The show combines the high-stakes politics of Game of Thrones with the intimate set pieces of the Arthurian legend. Executive producers Julie Gardner and Lachlan MacKinnon discuss the show's authenticity, the portrayal of female characters, and the casting of Stuart Campbell as Derfel.
The legend of King Arthur gets a fresh and brutal new take with The Winter King. The Winter King episode offers a new, grounded take on the origin of Arthur's sword Excalibur, stripping away fantastical elements. Arthur finds Excalibur at his mother's grave, making it his own by sharpening it and using it in battle. Warning: Major spoilers for The Winter King episode 1 below!
"The Winter King" sets the stage for an epic fantasy show, combining Arthurian legend and historical fact in a gripping narrative. Arthur's banishment by his father is rooted in his illegitimate status and the belief that he failed to save his brother's life. Derfel's forbidden romance with Nimue and his secret warrior training pave the way for future conflicts, while Merlin seeks out Arthur to save Britain from the evil future King Mordred.
The Winter King's first episode reinvents the legend of King Arthur and sets the pieces in place for a dramatic first season. The Winter King is the first novel in Last Kingdom series creator Bernard Cornwell's The Warlord Chronicles, which also consists of Enemy of God and Excalibur. These novels combined Arthurian legend with historical fact and stripped back on the more overt fantasy elements of the tale.

It seems unkind to mark down any drama that tries to find its way through the continuing tensions in Northern Ireland, but the problem with BBC One’s Blue Lights is that there’s no one to really root for. All the characters in the story are either loathsome or pathetic, with some a mix of both. It does tend to mirror the politics in the province in recent times, incidentally, but that’s not really the point.
Blue Lights is the story of three probationary officers in the Police Service of Northern Ireland (Psni), Grace Ellis, Annie Conlon and Tommy Foster, played with a kind of uncharming naivety by Sian Brooke, Katherine Devlin and Nathan Braniff, respectively. They spend much of their time getting stoned (not in the nice way) and being derided and mocked by their colleagues, who seem to resent the idea that anyone would actually want...

If you’re eagerly awaiting the release of Seven Kings Must Die – the final feature-length instalment of The Last Kingdom, airing on Netflix this April – you might be wondering what will fill the epic battle-filled hole in your TV viewing schedule once it’s all over.
Good news: the answer could be Bad Wolf’s new show The Winter King, which will air on Itvx. This brand-new historical fiction TV series has more than just the Middle Ages setting in common with The Last Kingdom: they’re also both based on a series of Bernard Cornwell novels. This time, however, instead of Saxons vs. Vikings, The Winter King will tell the story of the legend of King Arthur:
“Once upon a time, in a land that was called Britain, these things happened.”

More than 100 key figures from the UK film and TV industry have signed a letter urging the UK government to take “immediate action” against Iranian authorities for “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights” in their response to the wave of public protests that erupted last year.
The industry leaders, including Barbara Broccoli, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Edgar Wright, are calling for the UK government to “actively campaign to stop the violence used against the protesters in Iran, including an immediate stop to all executions” and “demand the release of all political prisoners in Iran.”
“Enough is enough. If the global community, which the UK is an active and influential member of, does not act firmly, these atrocities will continue,” the letter reads. “We need to sincerely support the people of Iran in their fight for justice and freedom.”

A growing number of figures from the film and TV industry in the U.K. have signed a letter urging British politicians to support the people of Iran as the country faces global condemnation for executing several of those involved in the wave of protests that erupted last year.
The letter, instigated by British-Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari, calls for members of U.K. parliament to actively campaign for Iran to stop violence against protesters and end all executions, to hold Iran accountable for the “gross violations of human rights and women’s rights,” and to demand that Iran releases all political prisoners.
Among the almost 100 names to have signed the letter, which is still circulating and gathering attention, are Olivia Colman, Martin McDonagh, Jessie Buckley, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Brett Goldstein, Jonathan Pryce, Hugh Bonneville, Richard Curtis, Gillian Anderson, Felicity Jones, George Mackay, Edgar Wright and Hayley Atwell.

Spoilers for Gangs of London season 1 and 2
The first season on Gangs of London hit in 2020 right at the start of lockdown, it came out of nowhere and blew viewers’ minds. Meanwhile, Elliot Carter (Sope Dirisu), an undercover cop, is trying to infiltrate the Wallace/Dumani empire by becoming Sean’s right hand man.
Power struggles and betrayals come thick and fast – if you need a recap of what went down we’ve got you covered.

It may be a few weeks before the second season of Gangs of London — the ultra-violent crime series created by The Raid filmmaker Gareth Evans — lands on AMC+ in the U.S., but U.K. audiences can now watch the latest blood-soaked, body-count amassing thrill ride through the British capital.
Launching on Comcast’s Sky on Thursday (the first season broke records for the Sky Atlantic channel in 2020), Gangs of London season 2 — once again produced by Pulse Films and Sister — follows a similar theme of rival kingpins and crime families colluding and colliding in their bid for control of London’s underworld, often through the most violent means possible.
“For season 1, we all mucked in together and tried to put in everything that we loved and believed in to raise the genre mix in a family saga like this, and we hoped it would go down well,...

Brutal British crime drama Gangs of London is back for a second series on Sky Atlantic and Now, with a release date of 20th October in the UK and 17th November in the US, and it’s looking as dark and gritty as ever.
When the explosive first series launched in April 2020, this story of the turbulent power struggles of London’s criminal underworld – centring on the Wallace family and various other international gangs – was an instant hit, at the time becoming Sky Atlantic’s second-biggest original drama launch behind Chernobyl. As dramas go it’s a thrilling powerhouse of a series, full of epic fight scenes and twisty narrative, and certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted gore-wise.
Now it’s back for a second series, fans will certainly be looking forward to seeing their unanswered questions resolved, as well as being introduced to new players in this savage power game.

Singapore Bans ‘#Lookatme’
Singapore has banned the release of “#LookAtMe,” a feature film by local director Ken Kwek. The InfoComm Media Development Authority said that the film exceeds film classification guidelines because it denigrates a religious community. Supposedly based in true events, the film depicts a man who is offended by a pastor who preaches against homosexuality, but whose behavior contradicts his teachings. The protagonist’s viral video about the aberrant priest lands him in jail, causing the man’s gay identical twin to fight for justice.
“#LookAtMe,” premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival and local media report that the film has been selected for next month’s Singapore International Film Festival. But the Imda ruling means that it cannot now be shown in any form in Singapore unless Kwek is successful with an appeal.

In this new “ripped from the headlines” thriller, an intrepid reporter goes deep, deep undercover to get to the heart of a controversial story. Oh, and there are no car chases or meetings in dark alleyways. But there is the “dark web”. That’s because, in the most modern take on the “get the truth out there” suspense saga, the heroine never really leaves her modest London “flat”. She’s online, and we’re watching her on her very own computer desktop as she bounces from social media sites to search engines to video “tele-chats”. Still, the danger is very real, along with the truly disturbing subject. And the whole thing truly hinges on the believability of the reporter’s fictitious Profile.
The year is 2014. As the monitor screen “fires up”, we hear the “key clicks” entering a search request for news stories concerning women from the US and Europe...

Arriving in theaters this Friday courtesy of Focus Features is Profile, the latest Screenlife endeavor from Timur Bekmambetov that follows an investigative journalist (played by Valene Kane) who finds herself caught up online with a charismatic and dangerous Isis recruiter (Shazad Latif), who believes that she’s a young woman looking to join his cause in Syria (you can read my review Here).
During the recent press day for Profile, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Kane about taking on the role of the reporter who finds herself in very dangerous circumstances as she embarks on this hugely important story highlighting the horrifying reality of the online recruitment of young women by terrorists. During the interview, Kane discussed why she wanted to take on her challenging role in Profile, her experiences collaborating with Bekmambetov and other members of the project, and the weight that she felt tackling the...

Timur Bekmambetov’s portrait of a screen-to-screen relationship is timely, although it mostly scratches the surface
Expanding the digital-age subgenre of films entirely told on computer screens from the personal (“Searching”) and the supernatural (“Unfriended”) into the geopolitical, “Profile” is a tense on-camera thriller based on a real-life case dealing with international terrorism.
In 2014, French journalist Anna Erelle, using a fake identity, established a pretend romantic relationship with an Isis jihadist via Skype. The objective was to learn about their tactics to recruit and transport young European women into Syria. Her hazardous ordeal is documented in the book “In the Skin of a Jihadist.”
For its cinema transmutation, the online conceit of this high-stakes story is at once pertinent to how we regularly interact with others and, given the ongoing pandemic that’s led many to swear off video chats, also visually tedious. Watching a movie unfold in full on...

In 2015, French journalist Anna Érelle published In the Skin of a Jihadist: Inside Islamic State’s Recruitment Networks. In order to investigate Isis recruitment tactics, Érelle posed online as a teenager who had recently converted to Islam. She was courted by a man named Bilel, who claimed to be a high-up member of Isis living in Syria. Unexpectedly, in 2018, her story was turned into a feature film that takes place entirely on a computer screen, in the vein of Unfriended and Searching.
Three years after its Berlinale premiere, Profile is finally hitting cinemas and while it’s unclear why it took this gripping film took so long to see the light of day, it certainly feels particularly relevant now that we’re all living our lives on our desktops. As Profile director Timur Bekmambetov told Deadline a few years ago, “There is no way to tell a story about today...

Over the last few years, filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov has become synonymous with Screenlife cinema, producing projects like Unfriended and Searching, and now he’s at the helm of a tech-immersive film of his own: Profile. Something I’ve always appreciated about Bekmambetov’s films—whether it’s the ones that he’s producing or directing—is how he forward-thinking he is when it comes to utilizing technology in the world of film (one of my favorite examples is Hardcore Henry), and with Profile, he proves that there’s plenty of drama to be found online as he manages to crank up the tension throughout this engrossing and harrowing terrorism thriller.
Based on the novel In the Skin of a Jihadist by Anna Érelle, Profile is centered on a struggling journalist named Amy (Valene Kane), who’s barely keeping it together in her everyday life—she doesn’t seem particularly invested...
