With Ryan Gosling's 34th birthday on Nov. 12, we're looking back on his time in the Hollywood spotlight. He's been winning hearts and weakening knees for two decades, charming fans on screen and off with his witty one-liners and swoon-worthy smirk. Back in the early '90s, he captured the crowd's attention at a talent show before bringing his smooth moves to The Mickey Mouse Club. From there, Ryan became a teen heartthrob, a romantic leading man, and a fan favorite so lovable that people actually petitioned for him to be People's 2011 Sexiest Man Alive. Most recently, Ryan became a dad. Actually, let's rephrase that - Ryan is officially a hot dad. In honor of his approaching birthday, go all the way back to Ryan's adorable days on the Disney channel to see his heartthrob evolution from adorable crooner to Hollywood's hottest Dilf. Chicago – “Blue Valentine” director Derek Cianfrance is happily married now with two young children, but the road getting there was turbulent and sometimes still is. While that’s real life, romance films often end with the lucky guy getting the pretty girl and them living happily ever.
By contrast, “Blue Valentine” is often much more, well, blue. More important, it’s just genuinely real. The romantic drama feels somewhat like a fly-on-the-wall documentary (Cianfrance’s primary experience is in TV documentaries) even though it’s not billed or scripted that way. It understands the true dichotomy between our happy and heavy hearts. The film, which was released on Blu-ray and DVD on May 10, 2011, is one of the best movies of 2010 that didn’t win an Oscar.

Here Oscar-winner Robert Benton interviews Derek Cianfrance. The piece was originally printed in the Fall 2010 issue. Blue Valentine is nominated for Best Actress (Michelle Williams).
As a child, Derek Cianfrance always worried his parents would divorce. When he was 20 his fears were realized. Both upset as well as curious about his own emotional antennae — how he somehow sensed discord in his parents’ relationship — Cianfrance decided to tackle the subject head-on with a movie. After gaining notice in the indie community with his debut feature, Brother Tied, in 1998, Cianfrance got to work on Blue Valentine, a storied film in the New York production community on account of its 12-year, 66-draft journey to production.

Blue Valentine Directed by: Derek Cianfrance Written by: Derek Cianfrance, Cami Delavigne & Joey Curtis Starring: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Faith Wladyka There's not a whole lot happening with the relationship film. From annual Jennifer Aniston comedies to requisite art house dramas, there hasn't been a real innovation in far too long. Blue Valentine takes a crack at it, employing a unique combination of techniques and a back and forth bittersweet narrative, but it still falls squarely into the latter camp. Tremendous credit is owed first and foremost to its cast. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams play characters at the beginning and end of a relationship, and the difference couldn't be more stark. The pair is essentially pulling double duty, and the juxtaposition between past and present is what makes Blue Valentine unique. We meet the pair now: Gosling with a cigarette crutch and Williams with a defunct imagination. The spontaneous...

Ryan Gosling thinks men and women have different reasons for getting married. The "Blue Valentine" actor, who was most recently romantically linked with Michelle Williams, his co-star in the movie, is unsure which sex is more romantic and changes his mind every day.
On whether he believes the line he wrote for his "Blue Valentine" character that "guys are more romantic than girls", he said, "You know, I change my mind every day. That day, I believed. But men aren't planning their weddings from the time that we're six. We're putting them off as long as we can, and I think we get married for different reasons."
Ryan, 30, also admitted working with six-year-old actress Faith Wladyka changed his opinion of children because he admits he isn't normally a fan of kids. He said, "I don't really like kids! I don't. Faith is different; she's not a jerk. Most kids never...

One of the most buzzed about films at both the Sundance and Cannes film festivals this year, and stirring up an equal storm due to the MPAA’s controversial decision last week to slap the film with an Nc-17 rating, Derek Cianfrance’s ‘Blue Valentine‘ is a film that demands your attention, but it should be for its former praise rather than the outrageous latter decision levelled against it.
‘Blue Valentine’ begins with Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy’s (Michelle Williams) marriage already in flux; their antagonism towards each other manifests in passive-aggressive acts rather than snide words, and their only common ground seems to be the intense love they share for their daughter, Frankie (Faith Wladyka). In juxtaposing this, the apparent end of their relationship, with flashbacks to the intense, bright-burning love that defined the beginning of it, we observe in devastating terms how even...

Ryan Gosling has suggested that his Blue Valentine sex scenes with co-star Michelle Williams "felt real". In an interview with The Observer, Gosling noted that he doesn't agree with the significant edits that were made to the film's erotic sequences in order to appease Us ratings board the MPAA. "The sex felt real - it wasn't sexy or 'a sex scene', and that's why we got into trouble," he said. "You shouldn't be penalised for doing a good job." Gosling also revealed that he and Williams spent a lot of time with their on-screen daughter Faith Wladyka (more)...

Ryan Gosling grew up in the limelight with Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake. By 18, though, he'd had enough. Now, after a string of slow-burn indie movies, he has found himself in a new wave of smart, low-key leading men and has genuine Oscar hopes. But can you be a Hollywood heartthrob without selling out?
"I'm interested in love and the lack of it," says Ryan Gosling, "and the crazy things we do to get it." This, he thinks, is the central theme that runs through his films. Gosling looks very sad and tired as he talks about love, but that's probably because he's been discussing it all day, sat in a rather cold, dark hotel room. Today has been an interview marathon as he's in London briefly to promote his new film, Blue Valentine. We're sat uncomfortably side by side, staring at an empty sofa and the blank wall behind it.

Could this guy get any hotter?
While promoting his latest movie, Blue Valentine, hottie actor Ryan Gosling was asked by film critic Peter Travers to sing the first song that popped in his head.
After all, he was on The Mickey Mouse Club and currently sings in a band. He's musical. So, what song did he sing?
"My Little Pony" -- a song that he says costar Faith Wladyka can't stop humming. He even prefaces the video with a disclaimer that he'll probably forget the words.

For 12 long years, writer/director Derek Cianfrance kept on believing in his script for Blue Valentine, never giving up until he saw his vision realized on the silver screen. His persistence and resolve - and his willingness to rewrite, rewrite, rewrite - have paid off, with a critically beloved film that's currently ranked 93% on RottenTomatoes.com, no small accomplishment. The story is simple: we see Dean and Cindy (Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams) fall in love and decide to raise a daughter (Faith Wladyka) in rural Pennsylvania, and then six years later we see that what that relationship has evolved into, and we watch its painful, devastating end. The quiet devastation - more like a slow death than an explosive finish - feels utterly real, which makes it all the sadder. The performances are raw and intimate (the MPAA famously overturned the film's initial Nc-17 rating), and the characters feel...

Title: Blue Valentine Director: Derek Cianfrance Starring: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Mike Vogel, Faith Wladyka Lately, there’s been a paradox happening in films. For the last few years, critics and film enthusiasts complained how they were missing the days when a film would take their time with a story. Characters would be fleshed out and the focus would center around the trivial moments of the story. Just imagine if Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen tried to apply this practice. It would be delightfully terrifying. So Blue Valentine comes in and actually takes a shot at painting the entire picture. A detailed back story on the two main characters is executed and the audience will [...]...

Blue Valentine is such a mannered, affected piece of filmmaking that in its early minutes, I wasn't sure I'd be able to survive it. A prematurely aged Ryan Gosling, wearing an aggressively receding hairline -- the character he's playing appears to be 27 going on 62 -- is roused from an armchair snooze by his young daughter, who informs him, with the kind of solemn urgency that kindergarteners pull off so well, that the family dog has gone missing. Gosling's Daddy Dean, an unlit cigarette dangling from his lips, scoops the girl into his arms (her name is Frankie, and she's played by a grave charmer named Faith Wladyka) and the two head out into the family's scrubby yard on a search mission.

The consistently remarkable actors deliver, as always, bravado performances in one of the best films of the year!
It may not be 3-D or have the Hollywood star wattage of other films this holiday season, but the small and intimate Blue Valentine is without doubt one of the best films of 2010. The disgustingly talented Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams take center stage as Dean and Cindy, at once deeply in love and later weathered and frustrated as the film cuts back and forth between the two extremes. Through the brilliance of director Derek Cianfrance’s script, written with Joey Curtis and Cami Delavigne, the film manages to be wholly honest and never gimmicky or cliche as it examines the relationship of this ultimately doomed couple.
Gosling is, as always, fully committed in his portrayal of Dean, whose initial lovestruck dopiness develops into nagging insecurity as the film progresses. Though he...

Blue Valentine was my favorite film of the year for the week that I saw it and I will never watch it again. It was like having someone sandpaper my soul. It's a hauntingly effective work, one that defies encapsulation. Because at times it's a relationship drama, at times it's comedic, at times it's typical indie romance, at times it's straight up rom-com, and at times, it's a tragedy. It's so real, it's such an honest portrayal of two people who come together and tear apart. It's not like two pieces of driftwood in a riverbed -- there's no drifting. This is like a Band-aid being attached with superglue being torn off and reattached. There will be many folks who just hate the ever-loving shit out of this film, and that's absolutely understandable, because when they say blue, they don't mean Blue Christmas blue but the blue-violet bruise of a fresh attack.

The Bfca have revealed their "Critics Choice" nominees and Black Swan looms like an evil tutu'ed shadow over the competition with a record breaking 12 nominations. True Grit and The King's Speech were second with 11 nominations each, indicating that the Bfca voters really do like the films they've just seen the most. The Bfca has long been known (and celebrated and reviled) as being obsessed with predicting the Oscars. It's a curious character quirk for an awards body that ought to be concerned with establishing its own voice and one that would be a smidgeon more respectable, even as pure punditry, if they'd only limit their acting categories to 5 nominees like the Oscars do. When individual pundits are judged on their predictive power, they aren't allowed extras, you know? But ah well.

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams sat down to answer questions at the NYC Variety and Altoids-sponsored screening of Blue Valentine yesterday. The duo talked more about the difficult experience of filming dark scenes, and Michelle said that she even called her best friend Busy Philipps for support after a particularly emotional take. Ryan and Michelle have been tirelessly promoting their film on the East Coast this week at multiple events including a luncheon with their young costar Faith Wladyka and a viewing at the Museum of Modern Art. Ryan's been making headlines for more than just his outstanding performance in the movie, though, due to his puzzling relationship with Blake Lively. Ryan Gosling posed with his onscreen family, Michelle Williams and Faith Wladyka, as well as their director Derek Cianfrance at a special Blue Valentine luncheon in NYC today. The event was hosted by The Weinstein Company, and the whole crew had a lot to celebrate since they won their appeal to bring the movie's rating down from Nc-17 to R yesterday. Ryan and Michelle have had a full week promoting the film on the East Coast, including at Tuesday's premiere, where Blake Lively was spotted sneaking in the side door. She stuck by Ryan's side for the afterparty, and this afternoon he addressed the rumors of romance. Ryan said of Blake, "She's an incredible actress; she's a good friend," and when asked more generally about relationships in the industry, he quipped, "You're not allowed to have friends in this business." Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, wearing an Azzaro minidress, gazed into each other's eyes and greeted the crowd at a special Museum of Modern Art screening of Blue Valentine in NYC last night. The adorable twosome were joined by their onscreen daughter Faith Wladyka, who got to get glammed up with Ryan and Michelle in Cannes earlier this year, as well as their director Derek Cianfrance. The evening wasn't only for the cast, however, since Blake Lively was spotted quietly sneaking in to check out the film. The Gossip Girl star is no stranger to the city's red carpets, though this appearance will likely bring back up the rumors of a romance between her and Ryan. The two were spied on a Disneyland ice cream date earlier in the Fall, but at that point her rep said they were just friends. Since then, Blake split with Penn Badgley, while Gosling is still swinging single.

There have been many movies made about couples falling in love and many made about couples falling out of love. Few films have dared to brave showing both. But that's precisely what Derek Cianfrance's "Blue Valentine" does, offering a raw, real portrayal of a young couple as they take the first tentative steps toward love—and then showing them six years later, when everything has fallen apart. It's a devastating, emotional journey, and Cianfrance is aided by two of the best actors of their generation: Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. As Dean and Cindy, the pair goes from passionate and young to jaded and aged in the blink of an eye—literally, thanks to the juxtaposition of scenes from the past and present. The pair transform themselves physically, adding weight and, in Gosling's case, losing hair. But the actors also change internally, beautifully capturing the resentful silences, the meaningful glares,...

Sorry, everyone. In case you were under the impression that you know how to have a good time, the cast and crew of Blue Valentine want you to know their good time is even better. Ironically, the flick is sort of a downer, but you’d never know it judging from the head-tossing laughter shared by all at the special Robert DeNiro-hosted screening of the film this weekend.
In addition to all the adults having a raucous time, Ryan Gosling palled it up with his young co-star Faith Wladyka again—you may recall that they were looking pretty adorable together at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, and this time was no different. Yep, our ovaries still love him. For more photos of the event, click through our gallery!

Imp have debuted a wistful new poster for The Weinstein Company’s Blue Valentine.
Directed by Derek Cianfrance, Blue Valentine stars Michelle Williams, Ryan Gosling, Mike Vogel, John Doman, Ben Shenkman and Faith Wladyka.
Blue Valentine centers on a married couple, Dean and Cindy, and their relationship over a number of years by shifting between different time periods. Problems with the marriage center around Cindy’s ambition, juxtaposed to Dean’s contentment to center his life around his wife and child.
The Weinstein Company are actively challenging the Nc-17 rating that was slapped on Blue Valentine by the MPAA.

That “Blue Valentine” would receive an Nc-17 rating from the MPAA is mystifiying. The scene that earned the indie film such a harsh designation involves nudity but doesn’t show any genitalia (whereas naked men were ubiquitous in the R-rated “Jackass 3D”). It is violent, although more emotionally than physically. Elsewhere, there’s one instance of the use of the “C” word (which also made an infamous appearance in the R-rated “Kick-Ass”). The Weinstein Co., which is distributing the film, is appealing the decision, but that the ratings board reacted so strongly to “Blue Valentine” speaks to its dramatic power — it is disturbing, the scene in question particularly.

HollywoodNews.com: Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams’ new film “Blue Valentine” has just released the poster for the film that also stars Mike Vogel, John Doman, and Faith Wladyka.
“Blue Valentine” is an intimate, shattering portrait of a disintegrating marriage.
On the far side of a once-passionate romance, Cindy (Michelle Williams) and Dean (Ryan Gosling) are married with a young daughter. Hoping to save their marriage, they steal away to a theme hotel. We then encounter them years earlier, when they met and fell in love—full of life and hope.
Moving fluidly between these two time periods, Blue Valentine unfolds like a cinematic duet whose refrain asks, where did their love go? Framing the film as a mystery whose answer lies scattered in time (and in character), filmmaker Derek Cianfrance constructs an elegant set of dualities: past and present, youth and adulthood, vitality and entropy. The rigor of his...

The Weinstein Company will appeal the MPAA's Nc-17 rating given to the drama Blue Valentine last week. This is a natural move since this rating greatly reduces the chance of the film seeing on a wider scale. In a statement, Harvey Weinstein said the following: "We are taking every possible step to contest the MPAA's decision," "We respect the work of the MPAA and we hope, after having a chance to sit down with them, they will see that our appeal is reasonable, and the film, which is an honest and personal portrait of a relationship, would be significantly harmed by such a rating." The film is directed and written by Derek Cianfrance. Starring are Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Mike Vogel, John Doman, Ben Shenkman and Faith Wladyka.

The ladies couldn't stop showing love for Ryan Gosling last night at his premiere of Blue Valentine during the Toronto Film Festival. He arrived solo, looking dapper in his shades and gray suit, but soon he scooped up his young costar, Faith Wladyka, for a photo op. Ryan and other people involved in the movie followed up their screening with an afterparty, where Ryan was again a hot commodity saying cheese with producer Lynette Howell. Ryan's leading lady, Michelle Williams, wasn't able to join in on the love fest, unlike her appearances with him at both Cannes and Sundance earlier this year. Michelle and Ryan were together, though, for a recent photo shoot in Canada and the hot results of their efforts are on display in October's W. With Cannes's final weekend approaching people are probably leaving town. At least that's the way it happens at other festivals. The only thing exciting left (unless there's a late breaking hit or polarizing cause) is the awards and the first ever Queer Palm which could go a few different ways. But here's a few more tweets and eye candy treats for you.

Their new movie Blue Valentine earned great reviews so far at the Cannes Film Festival - but costars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling have everyone on Croisette talking about something else: whether or not they're a real-life couple. In the drama, Williams and Gosling, both 29, play a couple trying to prevent their marriage from falling apart. But the stars looked anything but troubled at Tuesday's photocall, where the actor squeezed Williams's hand affectionately. Later, just before their big premiere, Williams clasped Gosling's hand on the red carpet, and the two remained hand-in-hand while walking into the screening. They were equally...

When you are a handsome celebrity like Ryan Gosling you sometimes have to come up with creative ways to battle the ever-present paparazzi. Luckily, Ryan found his perfect weapon: pint-sized co-star Faith Wladyka. Ryan and Faith played around on the Harlee Yacht during the Blue Valentine dinner at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday. Ryan Gosling, we are helpless and unable to function after all this cute overload you’re responsible for. It was bad enough when you were dating Rachel McAdams and you took your Notebook love off the screen and into our hearts making us think you were The World’s Most Perfect Couple™ , but now that we’re all a little older and wiser and that much closer to our child-bearing years, you are truly killing us. Only a very smooth operator could appeal to our maternal instincts this way, posing with your tiny Blue Valentine co-star Faith Wladyka so lovingly on the red carpet. Not to mention how cute you are with co-star Michelle Williams, too. You’re good, Gosling. You’re very good.

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams had one more round of posing for the cameras last night before heading into the party following their big Cannes premiere of Blue Valentine. Their young costar Faith Wladyka was there with Ryan and Michelle after their afternoon photo call with director Derek Cianfrance, and Rachel Bilson put on a leopard print dress to join in on the fun. It seems as though Ryan and Michelle are happy to be in each other's company while doing promotion, and the project has had a great reception since its Sundance debut - there's even Oscar buzz starting already for both Michelle and Ryan. Be still our hearts. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams clasped hands this evening at the Cannes premiere of Blue Valentine. Earlier in the day the duo killed us with their photo call chemistry, and now there's even more eye candy. He traded in his more casual daytime look for a sharp tux while she glowed in her flowing gown. Could all the hand-holding please mean something - kidding, mostly. Ryan and Michelle clearly have a dear affection for each other, and we can't help but dream that it could translate into a real life love. Ryan and Michelle were once again joined by their onscreen daughter Faith Wladyka, whom Ryan twirled around during her big red carpet moment. He's so cute and playful with his 6-year-old costar, whose dress held some fairytale wisdom to celebrate the unconventional love story. Harvey Weinstein came out to honor the film, which his production...

Ryan Gosling squeezed Michelle Williams close at a photo call for Blue Valentine at Cannes this morning. Michelle's short blond hair stood out in the sun and may have another chance to shine if she actually ends up playing Marilyn Monroe. Mr. Gosling was so stylish right down to his Summery white shoes while she was perfectly precious showing off those stems in high wedges and a short dress. This isn't the first film festival for the adorable onscreen duo, who already made the rounds at Sundance, after which their movie was picked up by the Weinstein Company. They were joined by their pint-sized costar Faith Wladyka, who was lucky enough to get lots of attention from Ryan and even got to try on his sunglasses. There is something amazing about watching Ryan and Michelle's affection for each other, and after falling in love with the movie back in Park City,...

The cast and crew of "Blue Valentine" made the premiere in Park City look like a family affair. Attending were the film's stars Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, Jon Doman, Mike Vogel and Faith Wladyka. Also in attendance was the film's director Derek Cianfrance, who was joined by his producers Jamie Patricof, Lynette Howell and Alex Orlovsky.
Told in both the past and the present, the narrative of "Blue Valentine" revolves around the disintegration of a once-happy couple's (Gosling and Williams) marriage and their last attempt to re-capture the magic that they once shared.

Well, it was only a matter of time before news of this acquisition came out of Park City. Blue Valentine is one of the most praiseworthy films of this year’s Sundance and, on a personal note, is by far my favorite of the festival hands down. I guarantee that whenever this film gets its release, all you will be hearing theatergoers talk of is Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, and Blue Valentine (not to mention the adorable Faith Wladyka). Now that it has a distributor that is…

Blue Valentine is a movie about two halves of a relationship: the first moment you fall in love with someone, and the realization that comes when everything is over and there's no chance of recovery. This is an extremely painful film with undeniably powerful performances from both Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. They go through both physical and emotional transformations during the five year period of the film: Williams from shy and adorable to cranky, dour and 15 pounds heavier, and Gosling shifts from charming blue-collar loverboy to disconnected father with a receding hairline.
The story is nothing new: boy meets girl and then loses girl, but this is about what takes place between the cracks. Relationships might begin virtually overnight, but it takes time for them to die, and that's where Blue Valentine turns tragic. Told in flashbacks from when they first meet to the death throes of their love,...
