Recently, a former American Idol contestant made headlines as she filed a lawsuit against the ABC show. It’s not the first time the competition has landed in hot water in the last 20 years. Here’s more on the lawsuit, plus other American Idol scandals and controversies that have haunted the singing show since it began in 2002.

Last year, a gaming live-streamer named Normandy Vamos auditioned for American Idol Season 20. She left an impression on judges Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Luke Bryan with her unique fashion sense and high-pitched speaking voice that changed into a deep, soulful sound as she sang. Vamos earned a golden ticket to Hollywood but later claimed she was uninvited. Her audition also went viral.

Though 10 former "American Idol" contestants who are African-American are trying to sue the show for $25 million, minimum, a piece, Season 11 finalist Jermaine Jones doesn't think they're going to get very far. In a new interview, he calls the former contestants' attempts to justify "Idol's" alleged racism "ludicrous."
"I think they are going a little overboard," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Some of these cases are over 10 years old. What have you been doing since the show that you feel you deserve $25 million?"
The lawsuit alleges that the producers of the hit Fox reality show are conducting a "cruel and inhumane plot" that dredges up old arrest information to make the African-American contestants look like "violent criminals, liars and sexual deviants." On January 16th, American Idol returns for its 12th season – and it won't take fans very long to see that the Fox staple has shaken things up radically. Who could blame the Idol team for taking risks? So here’s the thing about Phillip Phillips’s potential winner single “Home.” Last night, it reminded me of two different songs (aside from the Edward Sharpe song that is also called “Home,” and every track from the Mumford & Sons album): a song whose verses go “Ho! Hey!” and another song with a chorus that goes “I belong to you, you belong to me, you’re my sweetheart.” Well, it turns out those two songs are the same song, it’s called “Hey Ho” by the Lumineers, and the intro package to tonight’s finale is set to it. Even the music supervisors of American Idol have stopped trying to pretend Phillip won’t run away with this. The proper show begins with a giant, unnecessary group number, as the top thirteen (minus Phillip and Jessica and also Gentle Recidivist Jermaine Jones) take on Bruno Mars’s “Runaway.” Everyone is in white,...

Dubious claims dropped faster and more frequently during American Idol‘s Top 6 performance show than J.Lo’s legendary backside in her latest music video. I don't need to hear most Queen songs ever again. It's like Journey. Boring straight people feel cool for liking Queen and Journey, and we have to tolerate their late-onset realization of Freddie Mercury's immortality or Steve Perry's splendor like humorless chaperones. I just choose to ignore both catalogs now. Ugh. But rules are rules: If I had to perform this week on Idol, I'd choose "Under Pressure" for my Queen song (and totally key up the "Pushing down on me!" melodrama) and Jody Watley's "Looking For A New Love" for the Whatever song. I just want an excuse to wear a killer hoop earrings and coo "Hasta la vista, baby" to prudes like Skylar Laine. You understand.
Onto the rankings! The kids took on both a Queen song and a random song, and a few of them were startlingly good. That includes one mini-balladeer with chutzpah galore.

So here we go! It is time to really seriously say good-bye to someone tonight, as the judges have used their save and we have to get this thing finished by August. With only five weeks left for American Idol, the competition is heating up for the remaining seven contestants.
Last night, they performed songs from "now" and "then." Now, the judges' save has been used, so, as Steven said in the intro, "there are no more safety nets."

We are down to nine hopefuls. Do you think we could maybe get down to business and knock this show down to 90 minutes? No. No, we can’t. Two hours tonight. Listen: I am enjoying this show, and I would love significantly less of it.We begin, as ever, with Importance. Were you aware that our top nine were all once children? With a special dream? Well, it’s true. We are treated once again to Deandre’s Music Man moment, as well as childhood performance footage of Jessica Sanchez that might have been shot on an iPhone 4. “But did you know that your dream ... ” — shots of fallen Idols Erika van Pelt, Jeremy Rosado, and Gentle Repeat Offender Jermaine Jones — “came at a price?” Yep. Yeah, I think we’re all clear that there will be only one winner here (except for the people who don’t win but still...

One more singer bit the dust this week on American Idol. If you don't want to know who was eliminated, read no further!
Following a night of tunes from Billy Joel's catalogue, Jessica Sanchez and Colton Dixon emerged triumphant as the judge and fan favorites with Deandre Brackensick, Erika Van Pelt and Heejun Han making up the bottom three this week.
'American Idol' Names Their Top Ten Finalists
Van Pelt was eventually called out for elimination, leaving the 26-year-old to sing I Believe in You and Me by Whitney Houston for a chance at redemption, but the judges ultimately declined to use their save on the Rhode Island-native.
On a lighter note, Steven Tyler's Aerosmith bandmate Joe Perry took to the stage for a surprise rendition of Happy Birthday in honor of Tyler's 64th next Monday. Steven's daughter Liv and grandson Milo could be seen in the audience cheering on the Idol judge...

I'm not entirely sure whether or not to be excited for Billy Joel week on American Idol. I like some of his music, but his best songs are the ones that heavily feature the piano, so I'm curious to see how this will translate to a singing competition. My song suggestions caused a bit of a stir in the comments, but mostly because I flippantly called Billy Joel a creep. To backtrack, the music is the important thing here and I'm not sure if musically, this is the right theme for a bunch of teenagers. It appears that the people who love Billy Joel don't think these kids can do him justice, and the people who don't care for his music don't want to hear ten covers of it. Another thing I'm curious about is P. Diddy mentoring on Billy Joel week, but stranger things have happened.
I'm glad I...

That’s right — the hip hop artist and music mogul just announced on twitter that he’ll be assisting mentor Jimmy Iovine as the kids tackle the songs of the legendary piano man. “Set your DVR!!” Diddy tweeted, “I’m guest mentoring with Jimmy Iovine on American Idol Tonight!!”

Welcome back to another round of EW.com’s American Idol Power List — in which I attempt to predict how America will vote for the finalists and you all disagree with me and post your own ranking, and it’s okay because none of us plebes are fortune-tellers and the only being who knows exactly what will happen is celestial mouthpiece Ryan Seacrest.
Remember: I’m just predicting how America will vote and — to some extent — how the contestants might do this week.

Although Shannon Magrane was sent packing on last week's episode of "American Idol," the 16-year-old Tampa, Florida, native has no hard feelings about her early elimination.
On Monday (March 19), Magrane stopped by the MTV Newsroom and reflected on her fun, if brief time on the "Idol" stage.
"It's hard, you never know what America is thinking," Magrane admitted. "It's crazy, but I loved it. It was a great learning experience for me. I loved every minute of it."
During her final performance, Magrane took on Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day," which received relatively positive remarks from the judges. But in the end, that wasn't enough to save her from elimination. And while "Idol" judges usually advise contestants to stay away from Carey's power ballads,...

Capping off an emotional week on American Idol, voters eliminated 16-year-old Florida finalist Shannon Magrane on Thursday night’s results show. Magrane’s send-off came following the disqualification of co-finalist Jermaine Jones from the competition due to outstanding arrest warrants and apparent failure to come clean with show producers about his criminal record. In a conference call with reporters Friday, Magrane said she and her fellow Idol contestants were just as surprised as America while learning about Jones' departure in their dressing rooms. "All our jaws dropped to the floor," she said. The teen said she feels
