Jim Tweto, a pilot who starred in Discovery‘s reality documentary series Flying Wild Alaska, has died. He was 68. Tweto and his friend Shane Reynolds, a hunting guide from Orofino, Idaho, died Friday, June 16, in a small plane crash near the coastal village of Shaktoolik, Alaska. Jim Tweto, known for his starring role in Discovery’s Flying Wild Alaska, died in a small plane crash Friday, Alaska State Troopers said in a statement. He was 68.

According to the trooper’s report, Tweto and passenger Shane Reynolds, a hunting and fishing guide from Orofino, Idaho, crashed about 35 miles northeast of the coastal village of Shaktoolik.

“The Cessna 180 aircraft was witnessed taking off but not climbing and then crashing,” the statement read. State troopers were initially notified of an Sos activation at 11:48 a.m. and then reports of a plane crash.

Troopers who responded from Nome recovered the two bodies, according to the report. The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating the crash.

Tweto and his family-run airline, Era Alaska, were the center of the Discovery Channel series that ran for three seasons from 2011-2012. The show followed the family as they battled Alaska’s weather...

Jim Tweto, the bush pilot featured in Discovery Channel’s 2011-2012 series Flying Wild Alaska, died in a small plane crash Friday near the coastal village of Shaktoolik, Alaska. He was 68.

Also killed in the crash, which occurred shortly after takeoff, was his passenger, a hunting and fishing guide named Shane Reynolds of Idaho.

“I didn’t think anything could hurt this bad,” wrote Tweto’s daughter Ariel Tweto on Instagram, adding, “He died doing what he truly loved and is now with uncle Ron up there soaring.”

According to Alaska State Troopers, the Cessna 180 was seen taking off around 11:48 a.m. Friday but apparently had difficulty climbing and soon crashed. The village of Shaktoolik is about 125 miles east of Nome.

Troopers recovered both bodies, and the National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.

Filmmaker Cj Wallis has announced that his company Margrette Bird Pictures is beginning pre-production on a documentary chronicling the late rapper Mac Miller.

Miller died in September from a mix of fentanyl and cocaine, according to a toxicology report from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. His death was characterized as accidental. Miller had struggled with substance abuse in the past and often referred to the problems in his songs.

The star of Discovery Channel's "Flying Wild Alaska," Ariel Tweto, spoke with "Extra's" Terri Seymour, about her solo flying adventure (that will air on the season finale), and said, "Well, I'm standing here right now, so I lived."

Ariel Tweto is so cute she's almost cartoon-like. With a petite frame and an infectious giggle, the 'Flying Wild Alaska' star was a bundle of energy when we hung out to talk about Season 2 (premieres Fri., Oct. 28, 10Pm Et on Discovery). Actually, energetic doesn't even begin to describe her, as our journey through a wide range of talking points proves.

Born Ariel Eva Tuadraq-Atauchaq Tweto, the Eskimo firecracker from Unalakleet, Alaska, struggled to get her pilot's license all through Season 1 in the hopes of taking flight for her family business, Era Alaska, an airline that services the barren land and extreme conditions of the Alaskan wilderness.

"I'm still working on it!," she promised, before launching into one of her many endearing stories -- which are fascinating but, admittedly, not altogether relatable for anyone in the lower 48 states. Like how to properly cook swan.
