Arriving on VOD this Tuesday, October 24th is Ryan Gregory Phillips’ sci-fi/horror mash-up Shortwave, which explores the phenomena of shortwave radio signals, and the dark and deadly secrets that they can carry along various frequencies. The film stars Cristobal Tapia Montt, Juanita Ringeling, Kyle Davis, and Sara Malakul Lane, and follows a couple (Montt and Ringeling) as they try to rebuild their lives after their daughter was abducted, but their new home is somehow tied into her abduction, and we see how the introduction of shortwave communication brings some harsh realities into the light.

Daily Dead recently chatted with Phillips about Shortwave, and he discussed blending genres for his ambitious feature, the integral part sound design plays in the film, as well as collaborating with his Dp Lucas Gath, and more.

In the first moments of Shortwave, young mother Isabel (Juanita Ringeling) steps away from her daughter to make a quick trip to the ladies’ room, and returns to find her child gone and the town mysteriously empty. A couple of years and one suicide attempt later, she and her husband Josh (Cristobal Tapia Montt) have just moved into a remote “smart house”, complete with iffy locks and talking brain, in the hopes that a change of scenery will help with Isabel’s steadily deteriorating mental state.

Shortwave is upcoming sci-fi/horror produced by Tony Mancilla and Lindsay Lanzillotta, two of the producers of Sitges winner The Invitation (review). The film is about to begin its festival run with a premier at Dances With Films in Hollywood on Saturday June 4th.

In the film, a couple loses their daughter in a peculiar disappearance and is trying to move on. But after moving into a new home, a particular shortwave radio signal brings about oddness.

Shortwave is the directorial debut of Ryan Gregory Phillips and stars Juanita Ringeling, Cristobal Tapia Montt, and Kyle Davis and features Jay Ellis, Nina Senicar, Sara Malakul Lane.
