Filmmaker Jonathan Krisel has been roped into direct ‘Pokemon Detective Pikachu’ sequel. Jonathan Krisel, co-creator of ‘Portlandia’, is in negotiations with Legendary Entertainment to direct the sequel to the live-action ‘Pokemon’ movie from 2019. Chris Galletta will write the script, reports Variety.
Krisel co-created, wrote and executive produced IFC’s sketch comedy show ‘Portlandia’, which starred fellow co-creators Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein in a multitude of oddball situations around Portland, Oregon.
He also co-created, wrote and directed FX’s ‘Baskets’, starring Zach Galifianakis as a rodeo clown. Previously, Galletta wrote the 2013 coming-of-age comedy ‘The Kings of Summer’.

Jonathan Krisel, I choose you! A sequel to 2019’s live-action film “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu” is in the works at Legendary Entertainment, and the studio is in talks with the “Portlandia” co-creator Krisel to direct, IndieWire has confirmed.
Chris Galletta (“The Kings of Summer”) wrote the script based on the original film directed by Rob Letterman. However, a source tells IndieWire that no other talent deals have closed yet, including for Ryan Reynolds, who voiced the beloved yellow, electric mouse Pokemon in the original film. “Detective Pikachu” also starred Justice Smith, Kathryn Newton, Bill Nighy, Ken Watanabe, Suki Waterhouse, and Rita Ora. Though Deadline, which first reported the news, says Reynolds is still expected to play a part in the sequel.
Though the original film, which was released by Warner Bros., grossed $449 million worldwide, development on a sequel had stalled, with the film’s star Smith at one point even suspecting a follow-up would never happen.

Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel is preparing for trouble and is ready to make it double while negotiating to shoot the live-action Pokemon sequel to 2019’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu. Chris Galletta is writing the script, and sources believe Ryan Reynolds, who voices Detective Pikachu in the original film, will be involved in the sequel.
Rob Letterman directs the 2019 original film, starring Reynolds as Detective Pikachu, Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith, and Kathryn Newton. Nearly four years removed from the original, a "Detective Pikachu" sequel is finally moving forward at Warner Bros. Though it does seem like we're going to get a mostly new team behind the camera. As for in front of the camera? More on that in a moment. For now, what we know is that Jonathan Krisel, the co-creator of "Portlandia," is in negotiations to direct the sequel. This news comes courtesy of Deadline, who reveal that Chris Galletta ("The Kings of Summer") is also on board to pen the screenplay. So things seem to be moving along.
Rob Letterman ("Goosebumps") directed the first film, which finally brought the world of "Pokemon" into live-action. Rather than go with an Ash Ketchum-centric story, Warner Bros. opted to adapt the "Detective Pikachu" video game in a bit of a left-of-center move. It's also one that worked, as the film earned generally favorable reviews...

Warner Bros has set Portlandia director and co-creator Jonathan Krisel to helm its feature film Sesame Street, Deadline has confirmed. The live-action film based on the iconic kids series (now at WarnerMedia sibling HBO) will be a musical, according to Variety, which broke the news.
Krisel is coming off his Portlandia wrapping an eight-season run on IFC TV in March. The series he co-created with Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, who starred, won four Emmy Awards and was nominated its last four seasons for Outstanding Sketch Comedy Series. Krisel was Emmy-nommed three times for directing.
Sesame Street, which features Jim Henson’s puppet creations from Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch to Bert & Ernie, departed PBS after 45 years in 2015 after signing a new deal with HBO. The studio has been trying to find ways to build a movie out of the franchise ever since. It is working with Sesame Workshop on development.

In case you haven't heard, Arnold Schwarzenegger is smashing shit up for charity. Specifically, he’s using M47 Patton tank and destroying things to support the After-School All-Stars charity. And why not, right? You can enter for a chance to win, hang out with Arnie, get in the tank with the action superstar and crush something too. There's a high probability that this will be the best day of your life. Cigars included. In conjunction with Omaze, the After-School All-Stars and Arnold, a video has been released to promote the charity. The clip was directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts, the filmmaker behind “The Kings of Summer,” the short, “Successful Alcoholics” and the upcoming live-concert tour documentary “Nick Offerman: American Ham.” We’ve also got his exclusive director’s cut of the clip which is significantly cooler than the one released today. If there’s one thing that coming of age films remind us of, it’s that life as a teenager can be a difficult time. They also remind us of a time when we thought we knew so much more than our parents, that what they deemed best for us was often seen in a negative light at such a young age. Of course, most teens aren’t going to take the radical step that the three main characters of The Kings of Summer take (running away to live on their own and be independent), but what youngster in a situation like theirs doesn’t have such a thought drift across their mind, however briefly?
Joe (Nick Robinson) is a teen living with his dad whose mother passed away some time ago. Ever since, his dad, Frank (Nick Offerman), has not been the same. He’s constantly getting mad with...

A terrific coming of age story finally lands in UK cinemas. Simon checks out The Kings Of Summer...
There's a real tinge of the wonderful Stand By Me to the excellent The Kings Of Summer. Both films centre on maturing teenagers trying to find their place in the world (or at least thinking they know where that place isn't), and both films strike emotional chords regularly, without ever being too cloying about their storytelling.
The Kings Of Summer has a smaller ensemble to work with, and is - comparisons acknowledged - a piece very much with its own identity. At the centre is Nick Robinson's Joe, who's struggling to free himself from the control of his father. But this isn't a traditional nasty father story, rather that his dad, played by the brilliant Nick Offerman, has troubles and tragedies of his own, that...

Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts; Screenwriter: Chris Galletta; Starring: Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, Moises Arias, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Erin Moriarty; Running time: 95 mins; Certificate: 15
The spirit of Stand By Me lives on in The Kings of Summer, a poignant and frequently hilarious coming-of-age film about three teenage friends yearning for freedom and independence. Remember those school summer breaks when the holidays seemed to stretch on forever and anything seemed possible? This is that movie, and anybody with fond memories of long, hot summers will get a kick out of Jordan Vogt-Roberts's big screen directorial debut.
Nick Robinson is at the centre of the film as Joe, a shy and awkward high-schooler who's at an emotional distance from his father Frank (Parks and Recreation's Nick Offerman). His mother died several years back and older sister Heather (Alison Brie) is engaged and flits in and out of the house. Joe has...

We are now officially half way through the year and so I’ve asked our staff to vote for their favourite films released thus far. Hollywood blockbusters may have disappointed us, but thankfully we can always rely on independent filmmakers to create some truly inspiring films. Rounding out the special mentions is Terrence Malick’s To The Wonder, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, and Cate Shortland’s Lore – all missing the cut by a couple of points.

Fun has become a slightly forgotten commodity in the summer blockbuster, with many studios and filmmakers now inspired by the efforts of directors like Christopher Nolan to be as grim as possible. Two young boys, looking for adventure and a place to call their own, set off into the wilderness and learn a lot about themselves, adulthood, and the complexities of life in the process. This isn’t a new narrative, by any stretch, and its one that has repeated over centuries in popular culture. There is perhaps no better example of the “young boy in nature” story than Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and the novel is the high water mark against which many stories in this vein must be measured.
Every summer seems to herald a number of undercooked, over-exaggerated “trend” pieces about patterns in the films of the summer and about what that says about our culture as a whole. Rest assured, this is not another one of those. Rather, it is an examination of two films that tell similar stories in drastically different ways and with varying levels of success.

Chicago – Real summer movies shouldn’t be about superheroes or overwrought science fiction, it should be about long days working that trigger in the animal soul that awakens a sun-warmed spirit. Writer Chris Galletta and Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts crown “The Kings of Summer.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
The film harkens back to an innocence of escape, with a desire to develop a separate identity during the sometimes painful adolescence years. In the hands of Galletta and Roberts, this film becomes absurd and symbolic – sometimes overreaching in both arenas. It is the cast of the three “escapees” that bring the ideals expressed to life and wear them as badges of honor. Surprisingly (and in opposition to its “R” rating) the actors provoke an innocence behind all their decisions, counter-reacting to parental guidance in both legitimate and off-putting ways. Although it has elements of realism, the filmmakers decision to pour on the quirkiness tampers that truth a bit.

The Kings of Summer
Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts
Written by Chris Galletta
USA, 2013
It is a blessing and a curse to be a teenager with a wayward imagination, the former because even the most mundane objects in life can be imbued with some sense of mystery and wonder, and the latter because the more fantastical you make the world, the more let down you’ll be when reality sets in. Joe Toy, the protagonist of the delightful and surprising new film The Kings of Summer, is one such teenager, attempting to assert his masculinity in a world that has become too constricting, too rule-driven. Like most cocksure kids, he’s carefree and overconfident up until the moment that he’s pulled down to Earth once more. Because so much of The Kings of Summer ends up being filtered through Joe’s eyes, there are radical shifts in tone, but shifts...

We all remember those moments from our childhood when we wished we could run away from home. We didn't know what we would do, or how we would survive. We just knew we were smarter than our parents, and we had to get out. That thought is what drives the main characters in The Kings of Summer. The indie darling that delighted fans and critics at Sundance (when it was called Toy's House) opens in Austin theaters on Friday, and it offers lessons and laughs that could benefit and amuse both teenagers and parents.
Joe Toy (Nick Robinson) and Patrick Keenan (Gabriel Basso) are your average everyday high-school freshman. They have chores, are interested in girls and are extremely annoyed at their parents pretty much all the time. Joe's conflict stems from living with his father (the great Nick Offerman) in the wake of Joe's mother's untimely death. Occasionally, his...

Chicago – With Memorial Day behind us, thoughts return to the beginning of summer. Writer Chris Galletta and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts have created a coming-of-age film about that particular seasonal ritual, featuring young actors Moises Arias, Nick Robinson and Gabriel Basso as “The Kings of Summer.”
The film harkens back to an innocence of escape, with a desire to develop a separate identity during the sometimes painful adolescence years. Arias, Robinson and Basso portray friends who literally hide in the woods, away from oppressive family situations and civilization itself. In the process, they discover what is really important within the energy of their own experience. Galletta and Vogt-Roberts have spun a loose, fun and quirky summer film, complete with issues of parental relationships and teenage angst.

Every blockbuster summer movie season needs a few small, independent films that take viewers away from the explosions, the apocalypse, or never-ending string of sequels. The attempts to out-obliterate each other prove to be disappointing and failure after failure can be taxing those looking for that fleeting movie thrill in an action film. Seasoned movie buffs pace themselves with a smaller scaled story, to get in touch with a movie that has some charisma and some humanity that doesn’t need to be found smoldering in a zombie apocalypse. Last summer it was Moonrise Kingdom, a typical Wes Anderson film that was just as absurd as it was wonderful. It was the ideal candy break from what has become an annual slugfest at the box office. This year, that film could be The Kings of Summer.

Ah, nature. The great outdoors. The wild, green, yonder. As a child, there’s nothing more liberating than the thought of building your own house in the middle of nowhere, escaping your parents, responsibilities, and the societal bullshit that cages you like some immature, domesticated animal. Well, there’s that, and the fact that you can just hang out with your buddies 24/7 acting like morons and drinking beer. Either way, The Kings Of Summer is a remarkable little “coming of age” story which follows three boys and their outdoorsy adventure into growth, bonding, self-discovery, and childhood wonderment – one we all wish we could have lived out.
Joe (Nick Robinson) lives with his single, bitter father Frank (Nick Offerman), Patrick (Gabriel Basso) lives with his overwhelming parents (Megan Mullally and Marc Evan Jackson), and Biaggio (Moises Arias), well, nobody really knows that weird little man’s deal, but they’re all sick of their “repressed” lives.

It might not have the lyricism of "Mud," the eccentricity of "Moonrise Kingdom" or the angst of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," but "The Kings of Summer" brings its own strengths to the table, from the oddball wit of Chris Galletta's screenplay to a charming ensemble cast that includes vets like Nick Offerman and Mary-Lynn Rajskub as well as a slew of young TV talent. This big-screen debut from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a delightful spree, a goofy lark and the perfect hot-weather diversion for audiences who want summer movie...

Stand By Me: Vogt-Roberts Recalls the Boys of Summer with Enjoyable Debut
Creator and director of the Comedy Central series Mash-Up, Jordan Vogt-Roberts manages to make an amiable debut with The Kings of Summer (retitled from the original Toy’s House during its Sundance 2013 premiere), a film that manages to recapture that nostalgic glow of teenage angst and discovery despite revolving a bit too heavily on numerous instances of grating quirk so redolent of the coming of age drama. While its trio of teenage protagonists outweigh their welcome in its final developments and you may be left with the desire to see more of the expert players assembled for its adult cast, Vogt-Roberts has a made a warm and thoughtfully observed portrait featuring a lovingly drawn host of characters.

Nick Offerman plays Ron Swanson on the beloved NBC series "Parks and Recreation," but that doesn't mean he's actually Ron Swanson. (Sorry, Internet.) The 42-year-old actor has 71 credits on his IMDb, ranging from "ER" and "The West Wing" to "Miss Congeniality 2." Not every character he plays loves bacon and woodworking. (Even though Offerman himself does love woodworking.)
Take Offerman's Frank Toy in "The Kings of Summer." The coming-of-age comedy, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival with the title of "Toy's House," features Offerman playing an overbearing dad with a love of Monopoly and a penchant for creating angst in his son, Joe (Nick Robinson). After one particularly fierce row, Joe runs away from home with two of his friends to build and live in a house in the middle of the woods.
Ahead, in a long and raunchy conversation with Offerman, we learn what life is like when you're...

Previously titled Toy’s House, The Kings of Summer premiered at Sundance at the start of the year, and earned brilliant reviews as a wonderful coming-of-age comedy, powered by terrific performances from its young leading cast.
The film crossed the Atlantic for Sundance London last month (where I saw and loved it), and you can read our review here. Having spent the past few months on the festival circuit, it’s about to be released in the Us next weekend, and Funny or Die have debuted a very red-band new trailer for the film.
Premiering to rave reviews at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, The Kings Of Summer is a unique coming-of-age comedy about three teenage friends — Joe (Nick Robinson), Patrick (Gabriel Basso) and the eccentric and unpredictable Biaggio (Moises Arias) – who, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land.

Now this is more like it. I saw a film at Sundance this year called "Toy's House," and I walked away smitten with the film's sense of time and place and with the wonderful young cast. Chris Galletta's script is smart and funny, and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts managed to make it all feel real, like something captured instead of something created. The main trio of kids in the film, played by Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso and the one-of-a-kind Moises Arias, all do excellent work, and they get great support from an ensemble that includes Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Angela Trimbur, Kumail...
