While we’re not going to believe just anyone who says Steven Spielberg’s upcoming spin on “West Side Story” is terrific, maybe we ought to believe musical legend Stephen Sondheim. Probably Broadway’s greatest composer, well, ever, Sondheim also wrote the lyrics to the original 1957 Broadway version of “West Side Story” (with a book by Arthur Laurents and music by Leonard Bernstein). So while he’s never one to “tout my own work,” as he joked on last night’s “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” he assured audiences that Spielberg’s new movie is indeed excellent.
“It’s really terrific,” Sondheim said of the film. “Everybody go. You’ll really have a good time. And for those of you who know the show, there’s going to be some real surprises.”
Sondheim said that’s because of Pulitzer Prize-winner Tony Kushner, who has received two screenplay Oscar nominations...

Play it cool: The official trailer for Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake has finally arrived, months after the first look at the 20th Century Studios release debuted during the 2021 Oscars.
Unlike that initial glance, which utilized “Somewhere” from the legendary musical, the new trailer starts and ends with newcomer Rachel Zegler, as Maria, singing “Tonight.” In between, the trailer offers glimmers of the plot, which should be familiar to everyone who has seen the 1961 original and Best Picture winner. Here’s how 20th Century Studios and Disney describe the forthcoming feature: “‘West Side Story’ tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City.
In addition to Zegler, the cast includes Ansel Elgort (Tony), Ariana DeBose (Anita), David Alvarez (Bernardo), Mike Faist (Riff), Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino), Ana Isabelle (Rosalía), Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank), Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke), and original star Rita Moreno.

Rita Moreno was one of the stars of 1961’s “West Side Story” movie, but Steven Spielberg had to convince her to return for the director’s upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical.
“I almost wet my knickers. I couldn’t believe this was Steven Spielberg on the phone, whom I so admired,” Moreno told USA Today in an interview published on Saturday. “But then I had the courage to say, ‘I don’t think I could do a cameo. I think it would be a severe disservice to this movie — it’d be a distraction’. And he said, ‘No, no, no. This is a real part. Tony Kushner wrote this part for you.'”

Harry Hamlin claims that he was close to playing Indiana Jones, but lost the role to Harrison Ford because of an audition with Steven Spielberg that did not go as he expected.
In an interview with Page Six, Hamlin says that he met with Spielberg in 1978 alongside Stephanie Zimbalist, who was auditioning to play Indy’s companion, Marion Ravenwood. Spielberg told the two actors that George Lucas, executive producer on “Raiders,” was going to be late for the meeting and, strangely, asked them to make a chocolate cake while they waited for Lucas to arrive.
“He closed the door and left and we were standing alone in this kitchen,” Hamlin said. “I said, ‘Stephanie, have you ever made a chocolate cake?’ And she said, ‘No…'”

20th Century Fox released a first look image Saturday of actress Ariana DeBose in the role of Anita for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming “West Side Story.”

Directed by Richard LeMay (Blood Bound) Dementia 13 is a remake/redux/retelling of Francis Ford Coppola 1963’s original, which is notable for a) being one of Coppola’s early forays into directing; and b) being produced by Roger Corman.
This remake, which stars Julia Campanelli, Ana Isabelle, Marianne Noscheze, Channing Pickett, and Christian Ryan; and is written by Dan De Filippo (Shockwave Darkside) and Justin Smith (The Boy, Ominous), follows an old-money family still dealing with the death of its youngest daughter several years later…
While honoring the daughter’s death, a long con, an axe-wielding serial killer, and a vengeful ghost all coalesce in the same night to target the family. Everyone in the family has a secret, nobody wants to face what they did, and for someone to survive, the truth needs to come out – sooner than later.

The new Dementia 13 trailer shows that some children won’t stay submerged.
Chiller Films has dropped the trailer for the upcoming retelling of Francis Ford Coppola’s atmospheric 1963 debut film Dementia 13, which was produced by independent movie maestro Roger Corman.
“A vengeful ghost, a mysterious killer, and a family where everyone has a secret converge in one night of terror,” the official synopsis promises.
The reimaging was directed by Richard LeMay (Blood Bound, Naked As We Come). Dementia 13 was written by Dan DeFilippo, who wrote the screenplays for The Invaders and Chilling Visions: 5 States of Fear) and Justin Smith (SiREN, The Boy).
The original movie told the tale of Luana Anders a scheming young woman who murders her husband and infiltrates his disturbing family’s stately, out-of-the-way mansion on a lake in Ireland. Her plans are interrupted by an axe-wielding lunatic who stalks and hacks up the family.
