Documentaries centered around the fashion world — in particular, the often-enigmatic designers that power it — have become a powerful subgenre in the nonfiction space for a decade and more.

Designer Thom Browne has long been admired as an American classic, but has more recently become a red carpet fixture and the object of obsession of Hollywood’s A-list. Two-plus decades after his very short pants suit provided a menswear companion to the iconic Dvf wrap dress, Browne is seemingly everywhere — from the kitchens of “The Bear” to the ubiquitous stairs of the Met Gala.

This year marks his own turn in the doc seat with “Thom Browne: The Man Who Tailors Dreams,” which premiered as a special presentation for last week’s DocNYC film festival. The film, currently seeking distribution, is directed by Reiner Holzemer. No stranger to the high fashion world, Holzemer has turned in nonfiction projects on designers Dries Van Noten and Martin Margiela.

The proliferation of documentaries, television series and feature movies about fashion brands and designers is a testimony of the powerful omnipresence that fashion has asserted in contemporary culture. It is a blessing and a curse.

Fashion has never been so dangerously popular and ubiquitous in our lives; that is not a surprise, considering that the richest people in the world are members of fashion elites — the Arnault, the Pinault, the Prada, to say a few — and that fashion designers like Marc Jacobs and Kim Kardashian live the well-documented life of princes and princesses, in golden cages and ivory towers. Everybody wants to be a designer, a stylist, a celebrity dressed in fashionable clothes who gets a ticket into the Met Gala.

In Thom Browne: The Man Who Tailors Dreams, German documentarian Reiner Holzemer, whose recent work has included films on the fashion houses of Dries Van Noten and Martin Margiela, tackles a designer with an instantly recognizable aesthetic but an aversion to introspection. That makes Browne a somewhat distant subject, an enigma, as one friend and colleague describes him. He prefers to keep the creative spark tucked away inside his head and let his garments speak for themselves.

But wow, can those clothes talk. In workrooms and especially in extensive footage of runway shows that freely mix the oneiric with the whimsical — all of it coordinated down to the most minute detail — this great-looking doc spotlights collections that fuse impeccable construction with eccentricity and cheeky humor to beguiling effect.

Hulu has today announced that the UK original series In Vogue: The 90s will premiere on Friday, September 13, with the first three episodes, followed by the second batch of three episodes on September 20.

The series will be available exclusively on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland, on Hulu in the U.S., and in select other countries on Disney+.

The Thom Browne class of Met Gala 2024 group includes Cynthia Erivo, Rebecca Ferguson, Gigi Hadid, model Alton Mason, NBA pro Ben Simmons, Jaden Smith, Steven Yeun and — making a rare red carpet appearance together — Queen Latifah and her partner, choreographer/producer Eboni Nichols.

Met Gala veterans Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo hit this year’s cream and mossy green carpet in looks subtly inspired by their November movie adaptation of beloved Broadway musical Wicked. The subtle inspiration in question? Pink and green accents.

The more understated of the two, Grande, wore a white Loewe mother-of-pearl gown designed by creative director Jonathan Anderson. The 24-year-old “Espresso” singer, known for her flirty, feminine style, stepped out in an elegant black-bodice ball gown with a dreamy pastel and white skirt by Oscar de la Renta, according to Vogue.

The pop starlet opted for a fresh, glowing makeup look by celebrity makeup artist Carolina Gonzalez. According to a release, the inspiration for the look was “delicately fierce.” Carpenter and Gonzalez also used Cetaphil cleanser, eye serum, face serum and hydrating lotion for her skin prep, paired with Cetaphil lotion on her body.

Designed by creative director Demna Gvasalia, the Oscar-winning star stepped out in a 1950s-inspired white double silk bustier and flared skirt over frayed layers of black silk organza to mimic feathers. The original gown was inspired by the ruffled dresses worn by flamenco dancers, a nod to Balenciaga’s Spanish heritage.

Straying from her typical Met Gala ensemble, Kim Kardashian stepped out in a cozy meets couture look.

The reality star and brand mogul wore Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano. The designer created a haute couture ensemble comprised of a pale grey cashmere cardigan, a couture corset rewoven from antique silver brocade and a skirt tooled with silver metal.

The luxury fashion brand said the look was meant to evoke lace, flowers, leaves and sprigs alongside silver chain and floral motifs cut from mirror fragments. The silhouette was “inspired by the symbiotic love-affair between Elizabeth Taylor and her jewelry,” according to a release.

Along with Mindy Kaling — who walked the Metropolitan Museum steps in flowy Guarav Gupta — actress and fashion star of the moment Demi Moore wore one of the most sculptural gowns of Met Gala 2024.

On a night when a number of stars played it safe — see Donald Glover in a brown suit — Moore went all out in a custom dress by British-American designer Harris Reed Vogue livestream co-host Ashley Graham called one of “the biggest outfits I’ve seen all night.”

The outspread black dress features large pink-and-white flower imagery and black arrow-like spikes. Moore assured Graham, however, that it wasn’t heavy. “Actually, it’s not heavy at all,” said the actress, cheekily adding, “Feel my hips. They’re soft. Mindy Kaling turned heads at Monday’s Met Gala red carpet when she stepped out in a beige sculptural gown.

The multi-hyphenate wore a custom gown by Indian designer Gaurav Gupta. Kaling referred to Gupta as a “genius” in an on-the-carpet interview with Vogue.

“It makes me really happy to rep such talented geniuses who happen to be from my community,” Kaling said to Vogue of her gown and her jewelry, which was also created by an Indian designer.

The Bear’s breakout star, who has become a fashion darling with a series of custom looks during awards season, teamed with Loewe for a custom floral, backless column dress. The halter-neck gown was covered in a hand-painted, hand-embroidered floral lace and accessorized by 3D appliqué flowers delicately placed to look in bloom.

In an interview with Vogue, Edebiri said that of her options this year, this “was the one that spoke to me the most.” Her stylist, Danielle Goldberg, then relayed that it also was the creation that Loewe designer Jonathan Anderson was most stoked about.

“That really locked that in for me, in my heart,” Edebiri added to Vogue. “The level of craftsmanship that it took to make this dress is so beyond. Looking into those details, taking that into consideration, it just amplifies that feeling for me.

“Water” singer Tyla arrived in sand for her first-ever Met Gala red carpet.

Working with stylist Katie Qian, the South African singer wore a custom sculpted Balmain gown that represented “the sands of time,” she told La La Anthony on the red carpet. “We really wanted something out of the box for this year, it’s my first time at the Met.”

The Grammy-winning artist paired her Dune-esque dress with water-inspired jewelry by John Hardy, including yellow gold earrings with aquamarine, yellow diamond and blue topaz; and two yellow gold pave rings. The global superstar and Met Gala co-chair, who has official duties at the event alongside Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Hemsworth, turned up early for fashion’s biggest night and turned heads in a bespoke Maison Margiela Artisanal look by John Galliano.

Per the house, Galliano created a bespoke haute couture look composed of a midnight blue barathea wool smoking jacket with black grosgrain lapels and red silk ribbon inseam lampasse. He accessorized the look with black leather gloves, black silk socks and a midnight blue foam hat enveloped in midnight blue stocking material as well as a black barathea wool flower bouquet. He paired the suit with black leather custom-made Tabi boots worn with spats that were created by Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela.

Though it’s not visible from the look below, Margiela reports that underneath it all, he’s sporting a custom black satin corset.

Opulent to outrageous, elegant to excessive, Monday night’s Met Gala red carpet was equal parts star-studded and visually stunning. Then again, with Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth as the evening’s co-chairs, how could it not?

Simply doing a literal red carpet for a red carpet event isn’t enough anymore. Especially when it’s a party as big as the Met Gala.

Each year, the Met Gala rolls out a new carpet design that’s inspired by the theme of the evening.

This year, the star-studded crowd, which includes co-chairs Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth, is walking up steps that are covered in a cream color with mossy green accents along the sides.

The design choice is in keeping with the dress code of the 2024 Met Gala, “The Garden of Time,” which is inspired by a J.G. Ballard story.

Meanwhile, the sides of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s storied steps are lined with greenery-covered barriers between the stars and photographers and reporters, and the walls are painted with forest scenes that look like they could be out of an old masters painting.

The 2024 Met Gala is set to take place tonight (May 6) in New York City.

Cardi B says the strategy remains the same for every Met Gala appearance: “Be iconic.”

The Grammy Award-winning rapper and her stylist Kollin Carter — recently featured on the cover of The Hollywood Reporter’s Top Stylists issue — have been in prep mode for months as she has emerged as one to watch on fashion’s biggest night thanks to head-turning appearances that date back to 2018.

“We’re always thinking ahead,” Cardi told THR in late March during a brief interview inside Sunset Tower, site of a celebration for Hollywood’s top image makers. “I feel like the Met Gala is almost like going to the Grammys. It’s very nerve-racking, and even though we make it look so easy, we really be so nervous.”

American original Thom Browne delivered another series of inventive looks for the annual Met Gala, and Variety can reveal exclusive portraits of his Hollywood-heavy guest list.

Pedro Pascal’s hot streak continues.

The 48-year-old actor, who is coming off the buzz worthy first season of HBO’s breakout hit The Last of Us, turned up at Monday night’s Met Gala in a red-and-black custom look by Valentino. Pascal traded in that vintage Los Angeles Lakers shirt he’s been re-wearing (sustainability is always en vogue) for a look from the house’s fall winter 23/24 black-tie collection. It featured a red double wool oversized coat with scarf, red poplin oversized shirt, black wool shorts, black silk faille tie with gold metal v, paired with black socks and combat boots. Along with multiple gold rings on separate hands, Pascal finished his look with slicked-back hair and a megawatt grin (seen below).

It’s not Pascal’s first rodeo. The veteran actor also snagged an invite to fashion’s biggest night in 2019, when the theme was Celebrating Camp: Notes on Fashion.

Monday night’s Met Gala paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, and Margot Robbie found a special way to honor the late legendary designer in her own way.

The Oscar nominated star and über producer — fresh from an appearance at CinemaCon in Las Vegas where she promoted her upcoming film Barbie alongside Ryan Gosling — wore a black Chanel gown that featured a see-through corset with gold detailing. The dress, designed by Lagerfeld during his long tenure with the iconic French fashion house, was originally worn by supermodel Cindy Crawford in 1993.

During a red carpet chat with La La Anthony for Vogue, Robbie elaborated on the look. “I’m wearing Chanel, this dress was worn by Cindy Crawford in 1993. They remade it for me and it’s obviously a Karl design. I feel really great in it, actually,” explained Robbie.

A longtime Chanel ambassador, she then briefly shared about her relationship with Lagerfeld.

On a night where the Met Gala red carpet started off far more sedate than in past years — with many guests wearing beautiful but tasteful vintage designs by the night’s honoree, the late Karl Lagerfeld — Lil Nas X turned up the outrageous factor.

Wearing not much beyond a metallic booty-baring Dior Men thong and silver body paint encrusted with pearls and crystals, the boundary-pushing recording artist looked otherworldly, finishing off his outfit in a mask that called to mind both Venice carnivals and a Choupette-esque cat, thanks to the whiskers. “Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited the 3 of us to the Met Gala,” Williams revealed on Instagram Monday.

The 23-time Grand Slam tennis star attended the annual fundraiser with husband Alexis Ohanian, with whom she shares 5-year-old daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. Styled by Kesha McLeod, Williams wore a pearl- and tulle-embellished Gucci gown with Tiffany and Co. jewelry and a bejeweled headpiece by Lelet New York.

“Our new addition, there’s three of us here,” Williams told La La Anthony on the red carpet. “I’m good, I’m feeling good now, I can breathe. I’m not hiding!”

Anna Wintour has organized and presided over the Met Gala since 1995, but this year’s edition must be pretty special for the Vogue guru as she turned up to the event arm-in-arm with Oscar nominee Bill Nighy, seemingly confirming those romance rumors.

In the 2004 advertising campaign for the iconic Chanel N°5 perfume, starring Nicole Kidman and directed by Baz Luhrmann, the Australian-American actress wore a custom Chanel pink silk tulle dress, with a lengthy, four-meter round train. At this year’s Met Gala, an homage to Chanel’s iconic designer Karl Lagerfeld, Kidman wore the same dress just shy of 20 years later.

At the 2023 Met Gala red carpet, stars including Cardi B, Doja Cat, Jared Leto and more paid homage to the late Karl Lagerfeld (and his pet cat, Choupette), who is the subject of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s latest Costume Institute fashion exhibit.

The museum’s annual fundraiser was co-chaired by Penélope Cruz, Michaela Coel, Roger Federer, Dua Lipa, and Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, who has organized and presided over the event since 1995. Titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” this year’s Costume Institute collection honors the life and legendary career of the late designer who passed away on Feb. 19, 2019, and features more than 150 pieces including sketches.

Met Gala guests often have embraced outrageous custom looks inspired by exhibition themes, like 2019’s Camp: Notes on Fashion. But affection for Lagerfeld the man and a love of his work may result in a carpet tilted more toward elegance than costume.

Every year, the Met Gala co-chairs are among the first to arrive at New York’s A-list affair, and this year was no different as Dua Lipa and Penélope Cruz are already in the building — both in vintage Chanel couture.

Dua Lipa is outfitted in Chanel couture from 1992, a long corseted dress in ivory wool tweed from the house’s haute couture fall-winter collection, the same one worn by supermodel Claudia Schiffer. She accessorized the look with Chanel shoes and a necklace in platinum with a diamond of over 200 carats and diamonds (cut in the proportions of the famed Tiffany diamond) along with a ring in platinum with diamonds of over 9 total carats and Tiffany & Co. Fashion’s biggest night is always one to remember.

Celebrities descend upon The Met steps every first Monday in May to bring their fashion A-game for a different theme each year. Sometimes, in an effort to be memorable, stars will go above and beyond for their outfits, at times resulting in the year’s most outrageous looks.

This year, the Met Gala theme honors the late Karl Lagerfeld, who died in 2019. The dress code simply reads “In honor of Karl,” leaving it mostly up for interpretation for the celebrities attending — and their stylists. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute curator Andrew Bolton says he hopes guests will celebrate “the spirit of Karl, and hopefully, everyone will come out in vintage Chanel, vintage Fendi, vintage Chloé.”

Vogue‘s Anna Wintour will steer the event, alongside Michaela Coel, Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer and Dua Lipa, who all serve as her Met Gala co-chairs.

Last year, it took 275,000 bright pink roses to adorn the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the Met Gala, the biggest night in fashion and one of the biggest concentrations of star power anywhere.

It remains to be seen how the museum’s Great Hall will be decorated come the first Monday in May, but one thing is not in question: those entering it will look spectacular. The theme centers on the late designer Karl Lagerfeld, who made an indelible mark on luxury fashion in his long career at Chanel, Fendi and elsewhere. It is a theme not without controversy — Lagerfeld was known for contentious remarks about everything from #MeToo to curvy bodies.

The 2023 Met Gala will celebrate the work of Karl Lagerfeld, it was announced Friday.

The German-born couturier was known for his time at Chanel, Fendi and Chloe before his death in 2019 at the age of 85.

The Costume Institute Benefit, also known as the Met Gala, will take place on Monday, May 1, 2023, in keeping with the star-studded event’s first Monday in May tradition.

The theme, as usual, is also borrowed from the spring exhibit running at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 2023 the Costume Institute will present an exhibition titled Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.

The exhibit, according to the museum, will focus “on the designer’s stylistic vocabulary as it was expressed in through lines—aesthetic themes that appear time and again—in his fashions from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.” Additionally, the show will highlight Lagerfeld’s “unique working methodology.

Last Friday, to escape the New York heatwave, I decided to revisit The Costume Institute’s extensive two-part exhibition, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion and In America: An Anthology of Fashion, which turned the Met’s American Wing over to nine directors: Martin Scorsese, Tom Ford, Chloé Zhao, Radha Blank, Sofia Coppola, Janicza Bravo, Autumn de Wilde, Julie Dash, and Regina King. For the exhibition, curated by Andrew Bolton, the filmmakers conjured up scenes mainly inspired by American domestic lives and installed in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s period rooms ranging in time between 1805 and the teens of the 20th century.

As the Met Gala sets its return to the first Monday in May, the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced plans for the 2022 spring exhibition themed “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.”

The Met curators, led by Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu curator in charge of the Costume Institute, have enlisted eight film directors —- Janicza Bravo, Sofia Coppola, Julie Dash, Tom Ford, Regina King, Martin Scorsese, Autumn de Wilde and Chloé Zhao — to help bring the exhibition to life.

“Anthology” is the second of a two-part presentation saluting designers and dressmakers who worked in the United States from the 19th to the mid-late 20th century. It follows Part One, titled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,” which opened in September 2021.
