Shawn Johnson has been rooting for bestie Mallory Ervin since before they even met. Tasked with judging the 2010 Miss America pageant, the Olympic gymnast found herself pushing hard for the bubbly Miss Kentucky title holder. "I didn't even know you and I wanted you to win," Johnson recalled to her pal in their joint Zoom interview with E! News as they sat side-by-side in the athlete's Nashville-area pad. "I voted you as the winner." Though the gold medalist and the contest's fourth runner-up—who live just minutes apart—didn't officially connect at the time, "We bumped into each other in...

The Afghanimals, aka Leo Temory and Jamal Zadran, and Rachel Reilly are competing on “The Amazing Race” for the third time, and if either team wins Season 31 — Rachel’s racing with her sister, Elissa Slater — it’d mark a first, because no one who’s been on “Race” three times has won the $1 million yet.
Granted, there’s not a lot of people who’ve raced thrice. The Afghanimals and Rachel are the eighth, ninth and 10th people to do so. Season 24, which aired in 2014, was the first season to feature three-timers, but the third time was definitely not the charm for those seven. They are:

There are several things that have to be discussed in this recap of Friday (December 19) night's "Amazing Race" finale, but I want to get this out of the way: I don't think Brooke was wrong to be pissed off to see The Candy Girls arrive at the Manila airport after the last Leg and I don't think Adam was wrong to say that he was frustrated. When I talked to Phil Keoghan about the rash of episodes in which teams didn't go home this season -- Four out of 11 episodes -- he said that people were universally excited by the ending of the last Leg, because it was something they had never seen before. True. What they hadn't seen before was a team get spared from elimination at the end of what was, for all intents and purposes, a Leg despite finishing last, only to be immediately rewarded with an Equalizer at the airport,...

As a TV critic, I often feel that good shows don't have a big effect on me. Obviously, the great ones do. But I also find that the ones that I initially dislike are also the ones that I end up thinking about the most, long after they're over, wondering why they touched a nerve for me in the first place. How can something that inspires such a strong opinion possibly be all that bad? I thought about that question a lot while watching the new episodes of The Comeback. When it first premiered in 2005, I didn't love The Comeback,...

There she is, Miss America. Miss New York Kira Kazantsev came out on top Sunday night, taking home the beauty pageant's tiara after showcasing her beauty, brains and very hip talent. Here are five things to know about the 23-year-old stunner: 1. She's living the American dream. Kazantsev is the daughter of Russian immigrants who moved to the United States from Moscow before she was born. Though she represented New York in the pageant, she was raised all across the country, from San Francisco to San Antonio. "Living in different places gave me perspective on what matters most: people," she says in an Overture video.

Whether you love them or wish they'd stop talking about Dave's age, his Achilles and the evils of Brendon & Rachel, you can't deny that Dave & Connor were deserving winners for this "Amazing Race: All-Stars" season. After having to self-eliminate from their first season after Dave's injury, the father-son team won a whopping six Legs -- they'll be taking tropical vacations together for years to come -- and never really faced any serious jeopardy. Did they do anything impressive in that Final Leg to win? Not really. But they got to Phil Keoghan first and that's all that matters. In the process, they became the first parent-child team to win "The Amazing Race" and Dave, as he mentioned so frequently, became the oldest individual winner. In their exit interview, which finally concludes my spring reality exit interviews, Dave & Connor discuss their comfortable "Amazing Race" triumph, Dave talks about his age and...

Does anybody still remember the "Amazing Race: All-Stars" finale? My apologies. I'm apologizing both for how long it took me to get to these exit interviews -- Last week was a bear -- but really I'm apologizing because you still remember what was almost certainly the dullest finale in the 24-season history of the Emmy-winning juggernaut. Brendon & Rachel probably haven't forgotten the finale. That's because they made it all the way to the last Leg of "The Amazing Race" for the second time and, once again, finished in third. And this time, they didn't really do anything wrong. They got a bad cab driver. Yes, they got a little bit lost wandering around the Mirage in Las Vegas, but they were already behind the other two teams entirely because of their cabbie in a Leg that didn't feature a single challenge that allowed teams to wreath themselves in any glory at all.

"Amazing Race" host Phil Keoghan really wants to do an "Amazing Race" reunion. I mention this, because in the two times I've talked to Keoghan in the past couple years, that is the only repeated point. "Survivor" has reunions after each season and Keoghan would like "The Amazing Race" to follow suit. Keoghan and I got on the phone last week to discuss the upcoming conclusion to "The Amazing Race: All-Stars," a season that is heading towards its conclusion on Sunday (May 18) night with Jen & Caroline, Brendon & Rachel and Dave & Connor still in the running for the big prize. We talked about the biggest story lines surrounding each of the remaining teams. Is Dave's quest to become the oldest "Amazing Race" winner a notable one? Are Brendon & Rachel capable of actually being underdogs? And should we be dismissive of the Country Blondes because of the amount of assistance they've gotten from other teams?...

Where have all the Cowboys gone? Well, on last week's "Amazing Race: All-Stars," they were U-Turned by Afghanimals Leo & Jamal, forcing them to perform a second Detour in Seville and effectively eliminating Jet & Cord for the third time on the CBS reality favorite. With their high spirits, stubborn independence and frequently faulty sense of direction, Cowboys Jet & Cord have long been favorites for "Amazing Race" fans and this latest season was no different. As the other teams bonded and bickered, the Cowboys continued to be Lone Rangers and, as usual, that worked out pretty well for them. Jet & Cord won the season's first Leg (and promptly handed over their second Express Pass to Jen & Caroline who, miraculously, remain in the Race) and added one first and four second place finishes. That put a big target on them, which is why Leo & Jamal U-Turned them, rather than sticking with their...

As I interview The Globetrotters, they're doing what they do best: Trotting the globe. Nate "Big Easy" Lofton and Herb "Flight Time" Lang were eliminated from "The Amazing Race" All-Stars" on last Sunday's episode. It was the third time they've been on "The Amazing Race" and the third time they've gone home without winning, which you'd think would sting for a pair of basketball players who, by nature of their professional affiliation, never lose. Actually, you probably wouldn't think that if you've paid attention to Flight Time & Big Easy, who have earned the right to compete thrice on "Amazing Race" by virtue of their unflagging enthusiasm and their eagerness to entertain both viewers at home and every passer-by at every international location. Flight Time & Big Easy like to make people smile when they're on "The Amazing Race" and when they're not being followed by CBS cameras, they're usually still on the road making people smile.

If you ask me for a preference between Country Blondes Jennifer and Caroline, I'll always go with punchy, pint-sized Caroline, she of the reliable zingers and ace comic timing. But Jennifer had the smartest observation in Sunday (March 30) night's "Amazing Race." Musing on why this season has been difficult, Jennifer noted, "Nobody makes mistakes." That's not exactly true. Natalie & Nadiya couldn't find a wedding dress shop in China over several hours and they went home. Mark & Mallory went back to get Mark's bag and they went home. Joey & Meghan didn't tell their driver to stay at a Roadblock and they went home. And last week, Margie & Luke couldn't get tickets for a good flight leaving Kuala Lumpur and they went home. At least in the early-going of this "All-Stars" season, it hasn't been that nobody's been making mistakes, but it's certainly been the case that, generally speaking, it's been nearly...

On Sunday (March 23) night, Margie & Luke had one of those rough "Amazing Race" Legs that happen every couple seasons. They started near the back of the pack and after an unfortunate flight situation they were in dead last as they reached Sri Lanka, many hours behind the other teams. Even though Brendon & Rachel faced a SpeedBump in the Leg, Team "Big Brother" made a successful travel gamble and pulled even with the other teams. Margie & Luke never got close enough to even see another team at a challenge, much less stick around. That actually made for a relaxed Leg for the mother/son team, who were in their third tour of "Amazing Race" duty. Sunday (March 23) night's installment of "The Amazing Race" came down to one decision made in the first 15 minutes of the episode. I'm not saying there was a "right" answer or a "wrong" answer in the moment, but the choice was made early and once it was made -- incorrectly, as it turned out -- there was nothing left to the episode and what followed was a 45-minute anti-climax. That's too bad, because this was perhaps the first episode of the season that was well-structured in terms of Detours and Roadblocks, featuring difficult tasks that had the chance to shake things up in terms of team placement. I write "had the chance to," because they didn't. This week's Top 4 was last week's Top 4. And last week's Top 4 was 3/4ths of the previous week's Top 4. We've had five Legs so far, which means 20 Top 4 finishes. The teams now in the Top 4 have *15* of those finishes.

So far, this “Amazing Race: All-Stars” season has frustrated me a bit. I didn’t love the huge gap between the first and second flights in the premiere, nor that we had an entire episode determined by wandering around looking for wedding dresses. I also didn’t love that this past week’s episode saw six teams get an insurmountable three-hour advantage based only on taxi-based luck, leaving the remaining three teams with a no-margin-for-error window to avoid elimination. Not surprisingly, as frustrated as I’ve been, Joey Graceffa & Meghan Camarena are even more disappointed. Team YouTube spent finished in next-to-last in the first Leg and, with very little room for advancement, started the next two Legs in last. Unable to get on that first flight out of China, there were left running against John & Jessica and Brendon & Rachel. Last Sunday’s Leg came down to a simple mistake: At a Roadblock,...

I suppose that certain factors on "The Amazing Race" are out of the control of the producers. If your teams are in China and you're determined to get them to Malaysian Borneo, if there are only two evening flights, there are only two evening flights. And if there's a three-hour gap between the arrival of the two flights, then there's a three-hour gap between the arrival of the two flights. And if there are only six tickets available on the first flight or perhaps only three tickets available on the second, then that's just what it is. But if you then design a Leg in which the Roadblock is a straight-forward one-at-a-time task and the Detour includes at least one option that requires basically no effort at all, you've constructed a Leg in which six teams have almost limitless margins-for-error and the other three teams have no margin-for-error at all...

Doing "The Amazing Race" with somebody you know and love certainly doesn't mean you're going to get along. Duh. Facing the unique pressures of a televised race around the world, we've watched married couples, best friends, siblings and parents-and-children get lost in squabbles both petty and significant. Usually after the fighting is over, the partners profess to continued love and the relationships, either by blood or by choice, can be expected to continue as before. It's part of the charm of "The Amazing Race." This All-Stars season, though, "The Amazing Race" bucked formula. When Bopper had to bail on the season just hours before it began, Mark was allowed to race with Mallory, of Gary & Mallory fame, already a two-time contestant. This happens every year, so I should stop complaining about it. Amazing Race 24 All Stars eliminated Mark Jackson & Mallory Ervin in episode 2 tonight. Tonight's show, kicked off with the teams, learning they had to go to the Chen Clan Academy in another part of China to get their first clue for this leg of the race. From there, the teams ran into a Road Block challenge, where they had to correctly build a motorized child car and deliver it by taxi to the correct location to get their next clue. Jennifer and Caroline were able to convince Jet and Cord to give up their 2nd express pass to them, because they had no clue how to build the motor car, plus Jet and Cord thought that was a good move because Jennifer & Caroline immediately burned the 2nd express pass out of play. Meanwhile , Mark and Mallory ran into trouble when Mark left his backpack somewhere, and had to go find it.

One of the unique aspects of The Amazing Race that makes it such enthralling television compared to other tamer reality shows is that the audience fully feels the frustration of the teams from thousands of miles away. And while this episode's toy car assembly and feather-ball rallies are hard to watch, nothing is quite as aggravating from this episode for viewers as the desperate saga of Mark and Mallory retrieving the male Kentuckian's lost backpack.
Ideally, the teams that lose should be the ones who do poorly on Detours and Roadblocks. In a perfect Amazing Race world, if you do well in the challenges, you should get further ahead in the race. But of course, the outside circumstantial factors are often the ones that screw teams over the most. Too bad for Mallory that she has to lose because of Mark's incompetence.

Normally the first team eliminated on "The Amazing Race" ends up being pretty anonymous, because it's just too hard for producers to give quality time to so many players in a crowded premiere episode. Say what you want about All-Star seasons or the specific All-Stars this season, but very few people were ambivalent about Twinnies Natalie & Nadiya Anderson, who earned fans and haters alike for their first season, which included a contentious money incident, some smart U-Turn strategy and lots and lots and lots of yelling. On Sunday's "Amazing Race" premiere, though, only the yelling was in evidence and even that was half-hearted after a while. Natalie & Nadiya got an early advantage getting on the first of two flights to China, but struggles in a wedding district saw them fall from first to last. By the time they started bickering at the top of the Canton Tower over ferris wheel cars,...

"The Amazing Race" has had twists that sent teams home before leaving Los Angeles, but no Racer has ever gone less distance than William "Bopper" Minton. Sunday (February 23) night's "Amazing Race: All-Stars" premiere began with a sad twist for Team Kentucky. Bopper, a fan favorite who cheered for partner Mark through an arduous, health-testing Bollywood challenge in their first season, began experiencing internal pain the night before the Race was set to begin, was diagnosed with an inflamed pancreas and was told he shouldn't Race. Instead, Mark was paired, seemingly out of nowhere, with fellow Kentuckian Mallory, making her third appearance on the show, but her first without father Gary. That's the narrative as presented by "The Amazing Race" on Sunday. On Monday morning, I talked with Bopper about his medical condition, how he handled it and how the show handled it. Season 24 of "The Amazing Race" started on Sunday (February 23) night with an episode that inverted the show's ideal momentum. There was a shocking, sad and emotional twist before we got to the opening credits, but then 50 minutes later, the episode concluded without any cursory effort at creating suspense or tension. And the editors couldn't have created tension even if they wanted to, as the "All-Stars" season began with a purely designed Leg featuring two needle-in-a-haystack -- not especially big haystacks, either -- plus a Roadblock that failed to inject even an iota of difficulty into the game. For a season that was already plagued by skepticism regarding the "favorite" status of several of the team selections, this was not an ideal premiere, now was it? I'd love to have more to talk about from Sunday's hour, but it wasn't well-suited for recapping, either. I'll do my best after the break,...

It looks like there is some drama brewing behind the scenes of the Miss America 2014 beauty pageant.
Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, was allegedly tape-recorded calling Miss America Mallory Hagan as "fat as [bleep]," according to Page Six.
Davuluri allegedly said it in her hotel room after she was crowned Miss New York on July 16, and a fellow contestant was in the next room and recorded the comments, along with other allegedly offensive remarks made by others.
"Davuluri invited friends back to her hotel room after her win. A girl in the next room overheard their conversation, and was so offended she decided to tape part of it," a source says. "A friend of Davuluri was supposedly heard making racist remarks, and Davuluri is allegedly heard on the tape blasting Miss America, 'Mallory's fat as [bleep].' Who says ink can’t be classy!? Miss Kansas started to change the way we see pageant contestants on Sept. 11, taking the stage in a bikini that put her sizable tattoos on display. What a game changer!
The Miss America pageant isn’t always the first place you look for edgy contestants, but Miss Kansas Theresa Vail, 22, is beginning to change that perception.
Theresa Vail Reveals Tattoos During Miss America
Theresa, who is also a member of the Army National Guard, took the stage at the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City, N.J. on Sept. 11 and proudly flaunted her true colors — and ink! In a skimpy red bikini, Theresa let judges and the entire audience see her torso tattoo — an inscription of the Serenity Prayer — as well as the U.S. Army Dental Corps insignia that’s inked on her left shoulder during the first round of Miss America preliminaries.

In the digital age, flirting online is the easiest way to go about it. Especially if you're Miss America. All of those appearances you've got surely leaves little time for dating. Maybe that's why the current Miss America, Mallory Hagan, is doing a little mutual flirting over Twitter with "The Bachelorette" contestant Kasey Stewart.
It all started when Stewart sent out a tweet, writing, "It's the worst feeling ever when you hold the graham cracker in the milk a second too long and it breaks off." Just a normal run of the mill tweet, addressing a problem everyone has had at some point in their life. That is, until he got a reply from Hagan, who says, "Don't go losing that swim suit physique, Mr. America."
Fans might remember Stewart won a "Mr. America" competition on "The Bachelorette," which saw Hagan judging alongside bachelorette Desiree Hartstock and Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford.

It’s always great when I get to walk into the mansion and let the guys know that it’s time to pack their bags and hit the road. We stayed at the beautiful new Revel hotel.Brad got the first date this week and it didn’t exactly go well. You could quickly see that he and Des had no connection. Des is big on chemistry,...

Miss America Mallory Hytes Hagan set tongues a wagging with her bikini bod when she hit the beach in Maui with Miss Hawaii, Skyler Kamaka. But the commentary wasn't what you might expect.
After wowing the 2013 Miss America pageant judges with her swimwear physique, detractors dissed Hagan for appearing to have put on a few pounds since the competition.
Mallory went straight to "Anderson Live" to answer to the insults, reminding haters that life is not a beauty pageant. "I think that I'm human," says Hagan. "I like to equate getting ready for the Miss America pageant as kind of like getting ready for a little boxing match. We get in shape and then afterwards, life goes back to normal."
Hagan also cites the busy schedule her position demands as a reason she looks like a regular 24-year-old woman in a bikini. "I think a lot of people don't realize...

The 24-year-old blonde beauty and former Miss New York is responding to various tabloid reports that she's packed on the pounds since winning the Miss America crown back in January, admitting that it's not always easy keeping her fabulous bikini figure. "I think that I'm human…and I'd like to equate getting ready for the Miss America pageant, you know, to getting ready for a boxing match," she said during a recent appearance on Anderson Live. Even on vacation, Miss America winner Mallory Hytes Hagan dominates the swimsuit competition. While on her national tour, the Brooklyn-bred beauty took a breather from the media campaigns and relaxed poolside in Hawaii with some of her friends. Hagan took off her tiara and opted for a stylish straw hat to compliment her hot pink bikini. Last month, Hagan answered some tough questions and tap-danced her heart out, grabbing the title of Miss America. Since then, she's been traveling the country to advocate the importance of education and raising money for the Children's Miracle Network. But that's the hard part. Meanwhile, the newly-crowned Miss America rocks a two-piece like it's...

Miss America Mallory Hagan put a lot of work into winning that crown last weekend—and she knew the journey wouldn't be complete until she had strutted her stuff in a bikini. And she was Ok with that. Asked how it felt to have so many eyes upon her in that scantily clad state (which, of course, is expected of all the Miss America hopefuls), Hagan told E! News, "The feelings are just knowing that my life is going to change." "It's something that I started working for when I was 13," the 24-year-old former Miss New York said in a sit-down at the NBC Experience Store in New York's Rockefeller Center. Miss New York Mallory Hytes Hagan, 23, was crowned the 2013 Miss America on Saturday (Jan. 12) -- but this New York representative started out as a Southern belle.
Hagan says she moved from Alabama to New York City as soon as she turned 18 because she "needed to find [her]self."
"I just knew that the energy of NYC was something that I really loved," she tells the AP. "I was always a little more liberal-thinking than my hometown. And I just knew that I needed to get out for a little bit, and I needed to find myself."
And find herself she did, accomplishing a goal she's had since she was a young girl.
"We're super excited, super exhilarated, super proud of her. We're not extremely surprised, either," says her father, Phil Hagan.
Upon winning, Hagan receives not just the crown, but a $50,000 college scholarship and a year as a spokesperson and role model.

But Mallory Hytes Hagan is more than just a pretty face who tap-danced her way into the judges' hearts on Saturday. Here are five things to know about the new Miss America: 1. Modern Day Rags to Riches? At 18, Hagan moved to New York with only $1,000 in her pocket. "I just didn't know that $1,000 wasn't enough money," she told People. "I look back at my parents now for letting me do it and I think, 'Are you crazy?'...

It was an unusually active Saturday night thanks to two NFL playoff games on Fox and CBS and this year's Miss America pageant on ABC.
The 8.3 million viewers who tuned in to see Miss New York, Mallory Hytes Hagan, win the 2013 Miss America title makes it the most watched edition since 2004 (the pageant aired on TLC in 2006 and 2007 and on Cmt from 2008-2010).
But the news isn't all good: the pageant's adults 18-49 rating dropped 11% year-to-year from a 1.8 to a 1.6.
And the audience is still puny next to the 30.8 million who watched CBS' NFL overrun from 8-9 p.m. Et, in which the Baltimore Ravens defeated the Denver Broncos to advance to the Afc championship.
Or the 29.3 million viewers Fox averaged directly against Miss America from 9-10 p.m. Et, thanks to the Nfc playoff match-up of the victorious San Francisco 49ers taking on the Green Bay Packers.

Brooklyn, New York native Mallory Hytes Hagan, 23, was crowned this year's Miss America -- beating out Miss South Carolina Ali Rogers and Miss Oklahoma Alicia Clifton, who placed second and third respectively.
Hagan tap danced to James Brown's Get Up Off That Thing and answered a timely question about armed guards in schools – stating that violence is not the proper way to end violence – to clinch the win Saturday night in Las Vegas.

It’s appropriate that the Miss America pageant, that charmingly vestigial celebration of beauty and bikinis, has been taking place in Las Vegas since 2006, and even more appropriate that, in this year’s competition, the first batch of perma-smiling contestants introduced themselves from the city’s Neon Museum. That’s because, like the museum, the pageant is an institution dedicated to honoring the long-standing tradition of American kitsch, a veritable trunk show of spangles and baton-twirling and everything else that makes this country so wonderfully weird. And it’s all brought to you by Amway, that quintessentially American business that...
