Spiders are disgusting. No matter their size, shape, or genre —sometimes they're tiny and realistic. Other times, they're large and anthropomorphic. Regardless of their type, spiders have been a fixture of genre cinema since its beginning. In 1957's "The Incredible Shrinking Man," the titular shrinking man (Grant Williams) battled a giant spider while adjusting to dime-sized life. Early roots of folktales and mythology abound with symbolic spiders. Arachne, a Greek weaver, defeated the Goddess Athena in a weaving contest, subsequently condemning herself to a life of eternal weaving as Athena transformed her into a spider. There are arachnid roots and depictions throughout history, most benevolent, though all deeply meaningful.
In contemporary canon, spiders have become more menacing, threatening, and squirm-in-your-chair disgusting. Likely rooted in the quotidian experience of arachnophobia, filmmakers have wasted no time exploiting the basest of fears to make their projects even more frightening. Most spiders are relatively harmless.

The upcoming Paramount Network comedy series “Emily in Paris” is headed to Netflix.
Variety has learned that the series will debut exclusively on Netflix this fall rather than the basic cabler. The series is created by and executive produced by Darren Star with Lily Collins starring as the titular Emily in addition to producing.
“Emily in Paris” was one of few scripted series set to air on Paramount Network in the near future. The network’s only current scripted original is “Yellowstone,” which debuted its third season back in June with a fourth already ordered. Earlier this year, Paramount Network aired the Afghanistan war dramedy “68 Whiskey,” which is still awaiting word on a second season. The network is also expected to air the Michael Chiklis-led drama “Coyote” this year, though no premiere date has been set at the time of this publishing.

The Entertainment & Youth Group includes Paramount Network, MTV Studios as well as TV Land, which airs Star’s popular comedy series Younger.

As we are now about halfway through the Broadway season, and there are currently 12 productions of plays set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative types, the opening, and (where applicable) closing dates.
“My Name is Lucy Barton” (opens January 15; closes February 29)
In this stage adaptation of Elizabeth Strout’s 2016 novel of the same name, the story follows the title character, who, unsteady after an operation, awakens to find her mother sitting at the foot of her bed. She hasn’t seen her in years, and her visit brings Lucy back to her desperate rural childhood and her escape to New York. As she begins to find herself as a writer, she is still gripped by the urgent complexities of family life.

Even before the great James Cromwell arrives at the punchline of a decrepit dirty nun joke, or the incomparable Jane Alexander gets to a vibrator bit exhausted seasons ago by Grace and Frankie, Bess Wohl’s affable, unremarkable marriage comedy Grand Horizons has its “something borrowed” locked down. The “something new,” on the other hand…
Opening tonight (at the Second Stage’s Helen Hayes Theater) in a spit-shined and smartly cast Broadway production directed by Leigh Silverman, Grand Horizons moves with a confidence that comes close to convincing. You’ll root for it even while you’re trying to place where, exactly, you’ve seen each scenario before.
Alexander and Cromwell play a comfortably retired couple who, after 50 years, suddenly decide to call an end to the bland, bored, practiced routine of their mostly silent marriage. “I think I would like a divorce,” says Alexander’s Nancy, capping a nicely choreographed,...

A few holdouts aside, the gay TV show has mostly gone the way of the gay bar. Acceptance and equality come at a cost — when you’re finally allowed in the club, there’s no more need to make your own. Like the tragic closing of storied San Francisco gay bars Gangway or The Lex, gone are the days of solely gay shows like “Queer As Folk” or “The L Word” (pending reboots). Television no longer has to cater solely to gay audiences in order to tell nuanced gay stories.
Enter the next chapter of “Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the City,” which picks up 20 years after its last installment and doesn’t miss a beat. Though the mini-series was highly controversial when it first aired on PBS, Netflix’s continuation feels like a warm embrace from an old friend; an unconventional marriage between rose-colored nostalgia and progressive identity politics.

The 72nd Annual Tony Awards are taking place Sunday evening in New York at Radio City Music Hall, with “Mean Girls” and “Spongebob Squarepants” topping the nominees list at 12 nominations each. Winners of the 63rd annual Drama Desk Awards were revealed on June 3 during a ceremony at the Town Hall in midtown Manhattan that was hosted once again by Michael Urie. As with the Outer Critics Circle Awards, these kudos also consider both Broadway and off-Broadway fare. To that end, the Broadway production of “The Band’s Visit” was ineligible, save for its sound design which was deemed to be new and won with these voters.

Exclusive: Mean Girls led the field by winning eight prizes, including Favorite New Musical, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child won Favorite New Play in the 18th annual Broadway.com Audience Choice Awards.
The winners were announced today ahead of a cocktail reception for winners set for May 24 in Manhattan. The list of winners (see full list below) overlaps to some degree with the Tony Award nominees. But because they were determined by nearly 21,000 fans voting in a Broadway.com survey, there are some notable departures, with The Parisian Woman winning twice and Lobby Hero‘s Chris Evans also getting on the board.
The 22 competitive categories include areas not covered by the Tonys, such as Favorite Long Running Show. This year that honor went to Dear Evan Hansen, last year’s winner for Favorite New Musical. Before Hamilton broke the streak last year, Favorite Long-Running Musical had gone to...

“I took this job because it was a great new challenge for me,” reveals Ariana DeBose, the star of “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical.” “It gave me an opportunity to do something I’ve never done in a way I’ve never done.” The actress recently received a Tony nomination for Featured Actress in a Musical for tackling this new challenge. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
DeBose embodies ‘Disco Donna,’ one of three different versions of Donna Summer in the new Broadway show. The multi-talented performer has a great admiration for the disco diva. She first learned of Summer’s music through her mother. “My Mom and I used to ‘Donna Summer-cize’ in our living room,” she admits. Think jazzercise but with synths.

Shortly after the nominations for the 72nd Tony Awards were announced on May 1, Gold Derby contributing writers Sam Eckmann and David Buchanan chatted via webcam about their first impressions of the Musical categories (Watch our analysis above).
“Mean Girls” and “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical” both earned a whopping 12 nominations each, and while Sam thinks both of those shows will see a competitive boost from their nomination tallies, he and David still think “The Band’s Visit” is the frontrunner despite falling one nomination short of its two main competitors. Even if “Mean Girls” doesn’t win the top trophy of the evening, Sam and David both think Tina Fey could take home the award for Best Book, though David warns that “just because it’s chock full of jokes does not a Best Book make.”

Every year, the featured acting races at the Tony Awards prove to be the most daunting to predict. Those high-school girls who laughed themselves silly at Tina Fey’s 2004 movie “Mean Girls” are now old enough to take their own teenaged daughters to this bouncy musical adaptation of that girly movie. The show’s high fun factor comes as no surprise — its undying theme of high-school-as-living-hell lends itself to the gaudy excesses of the Broadway musical form. You can’t have too much pink or too much bitchery in a show about pretty, popular “Apex Predators” (as one of the witty songs would have it) who pounce on their helpless prey and leave their victims traumatized for life.

At least one of the characters in Broadway’s Mean Girls would describe this musical adaptation of Tina Fey’s 2004 not-for-teens-only film comedy as absolutely fetch. And fetch it is, whether that word ever happens or not.
Vibrant, beautifully sung and visually splendid, this funny charmer – book by Fey, music by Jeff Richmond and lyrics by Nell Benjamin – broadens the original Paramount movie – a bar-raiser for teen flicks – to full musical comedy scale without sacrificing any of the mordancy and compassion that made a superstar of Lindsay Lohan and a generational descriptor of the title.
Directed and choreographed by The Book of Mormon‘s Casey Nicholaw (and produced by, among others, Lorne Michaels, who surveyed this preview performance with the same inscrutable, puckered expression caught occasionally by the cameras of Saturday Night Live) Mean Girls, at the August Wilson Theatre, stays true to the plot (and well-remembered jokes and catchphrases...
