Update: More than 300 Jewish creatives — including eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, “SNL” star Sarah Sherman, actor and documentarian Alex Winter and “Seinfeld” writer Larry Charles — have added their names to the list of signatories of an open letter in support of Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech.
The number of signees now sits at 455, having more than tripled since Variety first published the April 5 letter, which criticized the attacks on Glazer for being a “dangerous distraction” from the mounting death toll in Gaza while also contributing to the “suppression of free speech and dissent.”
New additions also include Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” co-writer Arthur Harari, veteran U.K. producer and Oscar winner Jeremy Thomas, “Girls” co-showrunner and co-writer Jenni Konner and “The Hunger Games” writer and director and four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross. Many members of the Israeli film community have also signed the open letter, including Oren Moverman, Nadav Lapid,...

Who doesn’t love watching a series that tells the true-life (or at least somewhat true-life) stories of real people? That’s what HBO’s hit series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” provides for NBA fans, Angelenos and TV viewers alike.
“Winning Time” doesn’t feature any of the real-life people that the series depicts, though some of the actors bear striking resemblances to their counterparts.
The show has a massive cast, with Quincy Isaiah (Earvin “Magic” Johnson”), John C. Reilly (Jerry Buss), Adrien Brody (Pat Riley) and others taking center stage as leads. There were also newcomers who stepped onto the court as guest stars for the second season, included Joel Allen as Kurt Rambis, Jay Davis as Byron Scott, Quentin Shropshire as James Worthy, Matthew Barnes as Mitch Kupchak, Darryl Reynolds as Robert Parish, Andrew Stephens as Kevin McHale and Larry C. Fields III as Eddie Jordan.

Michael Stipe, Chvrches, and Coldplay are just a few of over 60 artists who’ve contributed to the 2023 iteration of EarthPercent’s annual Earth Day compilation album. Proceeds will benefit the Brian Eno-founded charity’s grant giving program, which directly benefits organizations fighting the ongoing climate crisis.
Stipe — a frequent eco-advocate — contributes the track “Give Me a Hand,” a moody art-pop number featuring guest vocals from folk singer and disability advocate Gaelynn Lea. Meanwhile, Chvrches reunite with their pal Robert Smith of The Cure for a rendition of their song “How Not to Drown,” recorded live at the Brixton Academy. Coldplay tap H.E.R. for another live track, this one being their ballad “Let Somebody Go” at the River Plate.

Writer-director Dan Mirvish takes all kinds of chances with “18 ½,” a wayward, very pedestrian film set in the early 1970s against the background of the Nixon administration. “18 ½” attempts to be part cloak-and-dagger thriller, part romantic comedy, part screwball comedy, and part mood piece, and its plotting is slapdash, to say the least.
Willa Fitzgerald (“Reacher”) plays Connie, a young and uptight secretary whose job it is to transcribe audio tapes for the US government. We first see Connie in a car as she listens to a radio report about the tapes that Nixon made and how there is an 18 ½ minute gap on one of them; there is a slow zoom out from her face as the male voice on the radio drones on and some music on the soundtrack starts to seep in, and all this layering seems to be preparing us for a paranoid mystery of some sort.

I know Ben Platt predominantly from his major role in the Broadway musical Dear Evan Hansen and his comedy role in Pitch Perfect, but he’s a good actor with a bright future at his feet, and small independent drama Broken Diamonds appealed to me. With Platt playing Scott, a twenty-something writer who plans to move to Paris to focus on his writing, he encounters a hurdle in the form of his father passing away and his sister, Cindy, who struggles from mental illness, being temporarily injected into his life on a wider level.
It’s a really well acted film and director Peter Sattler (Camp X-Ray) does a wonderful job at keeping the camera on the emotions of his actors, a fly on the wall to the proceedings. It’s a nicely written movie,...

Living in the modern world is hell.
That’s the point made, over and over, in the new anthology series “The Premise,” an FX on Hulu original. This show’s five half-hour vignettes, each written or co-written by show creator (and former “The Office” actor/writer) B.J. Novak, examine concerns of this historical moment: Topics include bullying and income inequality, the general public’s relationship with fame, the self-serving nature of allies to social-justice movements, and addiction to social media.
It’s this last one that gives the game away. Most of the episodes feature lengthy, clumsy bits of dialogue or monologue that feel ripped from the daily concerns — and the ranty, discursive way of talking at, not to, one’s followers — of social media. And one, about a woman (Lola Kirke) who can’t figure out why she’s attracted a troll who comments negatively on her seemingly perfect Instagram posts,...

Sean Patrick Small will instead play Bird. Bird is described as a basketball star who hates the spotlight; preferring instead: Budweiser, ratty jeans, and brutally, ruthlessly destroying his opponents on the court. He and Magic Johnson, who have been pitted against one another since their legendary NCAA championship duel, continue their rivalry for the next decade.
Additional castings include: Olli Haaskivi as Phil Knight, the founder of Nike; Rachel Hilson as Cindy Day, the girlfriend of Magic Johnson; Newton Mayenge as Jim Chones, a veteran NBA forward; and Jon Young as Brad Holland,...

The FX network seems to be in the anthology market to stay. After the recent release of Ryan Murphy’s latest “American Horror Stories” series, actor B.J. Novak is entering the genre with his new series, “The Premise.”
Here’s the synopsis according to FX: “‘The Premise’ is a bold and provocative half-hour anthology of standalone stories about the times we live in. The curated collection of character-driven episodes challenges our shared morality tales, choosing art over argument, as it engages with the most relevant and meaningful issues of the modern era.”
The first trailer for the series dropped on Friday and includes several of the A-list actors that will be telling Novak’s various stories. “Dear Evan Hansen” actor Ben Platt will be doing an episode playing a “white, woke, twenty-something ally to social justice causes” who discovers his poorly filmed sex tape provides evidence against a police officer in a disputed incident.

With his new FX anthology series The Premise, creator B.J. Novak looked “to say something simple and sincere” about some of the most compelling issues of our time, “exploring an idea thoroughly and moving the hell on.”
“I wrote these scripts and said, ‘These are stories about our time, the way I see them,'” Novak shared during the show’s TCA panel on Friday. “It was really about, how do we tell the stories of our time by looking them in the eye and having fun with them?”
The Premise is a generally comedic collection of “one-of-a-kind stories,” which Novak pitched to FX as “The Twilight Zone without the sci-fi,” or “Black Mirror without the dystopian technology.”
In its first season, the show will tackle such topics as gun violence, allyship, social justice, social media, bullying, revenge, racial and immigration issues, celebrity, sex, incentives, and religion, putting its own unique twist on each.

B.J. Novak’s FX on Hulu anthology series “The Premise” aims to bring humor to some of the most serious topics of our time — like gun violence — though some of its pauses are for deep thoughts and not belly laughs.
Friday, at FX’s second (of three) Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour days, reporters got the first look at the show’s trailer. The sneak peak starts off on one squirrelly fella’s “worst sex tape ever,” one that could actually bright to justice police misbehavior taking place in the background. A little later, Lucas Hedges, as an international pop star, offers to have sex with whomever ends up valedictorian of a local high school. Suddenly, studying is all the rage.

There’s more plucking acoustic guitar in “Broken Diamonds” than can be heard in your average coffee shop — one of innumerable indie filmmaking clichés employed by “Broken Diamonds,” the story of a wannabe author, his schizophrenic sister and the crossroads they find themselves at when their father dies. Penned by Steve Waverly and directed by Peter Sattler (“Camp X-Ray”) with a dogged attention to cornball conventions, , whose overdone theater-kid turn further dooms the material’s stabs at humor and pathos. Consequently, the prognosis — for both its theatrical (July 23) and VOD (Aug. 23) releases — looks dire.
On the eve of a move to Paris to try his hand at writing a novel, Scott (Platt) has his life upended when his dad dies, leaving him in charge of caring for his volatile sister, Cindy (Lola Kirke), who hears voices, acts unstably and has been a lifelong center-of-attention burden on Scott. Exclusive: Adam McKay’s HBO L.A. Lakers drama series is rounding out its cast. Mike Epps (The Upshaws), Carina Conti (The Last Tycoon), Max E. Williams (Dreamland) and Mariama Diallo (Random Acts of Flyness) will recur in the series based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s. McKay’s Hyperobject Industries is producing.
Written by Max Borenstein, the fast-break series chronicles the professional and personal lives of the 1980s Lakers, one of sports’ most revered and dominant dynasties — a team that defined its era both on and off the court.
Epps plays Richard Pryor, the prolific and boundary-breaking comedian who lived the Hollywood dream, sometimes in excess.
Conti portrays Paula Abdul. Before she was a decade-defining pop star, Paula Abdul was just a high school student from the San Fernando Valley, moonlighting as the innovative choreographer for the Laker Girls.

Noted high schooler, Ben Platt, is shedding his youthful look to join a film, “Broken Diamonds,” that has him shockingly play a character that is actually age-appropriate. But the surprising transition from teen to grown man is helped along by the fact that he stars opposite noted adult, Lola Kirke.

Eugene’s (Finn Cole) father used to say about their Bismarck home, “This place is cursed.” It didn’t matter that it’s where he and his wife Olivia (Kerry Condon) settled with a bunch of other families. He simply never thought any good could come from trying to make a life there. So he left. Olivia and Eugene stayed. Dust storms swept through the land destroying crops, farms, and hope. And the banks arrived with foreclosure after foreclosure. Olivia Baker eventually became Olivia Evans, her new husband George (Travis Fimmel) became a deputy sheriff, and along came little Phoebe (Darby Camp) as they still struggled to survive. That’s all before a dangerous outlaw entered the frame with a $10,000 bounty that everyone saw as solution.
