Confirmed! DC's Deadliest Fighter Was Just Crowned In The Most Brutal Fashion
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Black Canary: Best of The Best #6The battle to determine the true champion of the DC Universe has finally ended, leaving one hero to claim the title. The fight wasn't easy, and proved to be more brutal than any comic fans expected, but there is no denying it: Black Canary has defeated Lady Shiva to claim the crown as DC's best fighter.

The dramatic victory arrives in the final issue of Tom King and Ryan Sook's stellar Black Canary: Best of The Best, chronicling the prize fight seen around the world, in which former Justice League leader Dinah Lance stood against Lady Shiva, famous as the world's most deadliest assassin. While squaring off against the most skilled killer on the planet would be doom for some, Black Canary went the distance to beat Shiva to a pulp, and put her down for the count.

90 Years Of Canon Will Be Realigned With New History Of The DC Universe
Image
Throughout the vast history of DC Comics, there has been a plethora of reboots to the canon, and exponentially more additions to character's development and backstories. With stories and characters that aren't too far from being one hundred years old, they're bound to get a bit convoluted. Crisis on Infinite Earths, Infinite Crisis, New 52, and Doomsday Clock all rebooted the DC Comics universe to some degree. Multiverse stories that take place outside the main universe and Earth Prime are also considered canon because the multiverse is considered canon. You dive too far into that, and it can definitely become confusing.

Mark Waid is here to set the record straight.

In a new series called New History of the DC Universe, Mark Waid is going to establish exactly what is canon to the heroes we know and love over at DC. He sounds like he's incredibly excited about the project too.

DC Comics Is Finally Giving a Few Forgotten Justice League Stars a Bit of Much-Needed Respect

Warning: contains spoilers for Black Canary: Best of the Best #1!

DC Comics is finally giving some forgotten Justice League stars some much-needed love. As the DC Universe’s premiere superhero team, the Justice League has had many different incarnations, as well as a host of spin-off groups. One of these spin-off teams was the Justice League Task Force. Appearing for a brief period, the Task Force finally gets a shout-out in Black Canary: Best of the Best #1.

Black Canary: Best of the Best writer Tom King is currently in the midst of an epic run on Wonder Woman.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #1 is written by Tom King and drawn by Ryan Sook. Seemingly, the entire galaxy is preparing for Black Canary’s mixed-mma match with Lady Shiva. Absolute Batman Makes Arkham Asylum Even More Terrifying, Turning the Prison Into the Stuff of My Nightmares
Image
Warning! Spoilers for Absolute Batman #3!The DC Universe has many scary locations, but few are as miserable and as awful to me as Arkham Asylum. Home to some of the worst villains that Batman has ever faced, Arkham Asylum has a reputation for creating more villains than it rehabilitates. It's never been a good place to be in the main universe, and now we know that it's even worse in the Absolute Universe, as we've all learned that Arkham Asylum has gone global.

Many things are different in the Absolute Universe, but one of the most horrifying changes, in my opinion, was revealed in Absolute Batman #3 by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta. In this issue, Alfred reveals the existence of the Arks: black-site prisons run by governments all over the world. The first was known as Ark A and was in Santa Prisca. Now, it looks like the largest of...

Sorry, Batman But You Would Get Your "Ass Kicked" If You Stepped Into DC's New Grudge Match
Image
When it comes to hand-to-hand fighting, Batman is one of the greatest in the DC Universe - but at least one person is better. There are very few characters who can stand up to his mastery over martial arts, but there are a few who are better than him, and DC is holding a grudge match between two martial artists who would absolutely destroy Batman if he tried to step into the ring.

In an interview with Polygon about his new series with Ryan Sook, Black Canary: Best of the Best, Tom King discusses just how dangerous Lady Shiva is and why Black Canary will have to be the "best of the best" to go up against her. King states that, as the title implies, the comic is about only the best fighters that DC has to offer, and unfortunately, Batman just doesn't make the cut:

I mean, the book...

Black Canary's New Story Ties DC Comics to Rocky and Yes, the Choice Was Very Intentional
Image
The DC Universe has a lot of great stories in it, but Black Canary's latest adventure finally gives the grand world a classic story in the vein of Rocky. Right now, Dinah Lance is in the fight of her life and one comic writer explains what it brings to the Dcu.

Black Canary: Best of the Best writer Tom King spoke with Polygon about his miniseries and discussed the inspiration behind his story. King fondly discussed his fascination with fighting movies like Rocky and his work in crafting a story that captured the magic of his favorite films.

Tom King: I love the announcers. I wanted to make a comic in the tradition of these great fight movies like Rocky and Raging Bull, which is just a genre of films that I enjoy. I was like, How could a comic capture that? One of my favorite comics that I ever did,...

After 30 years, Batman has finally acknowledged an unlikely character’s hand in helping him at his lowest point. Bane breaks Batman’s back during the Knightfall event, taking Bruce Wayne off the table. While Azrael defended Gotham in Batman’s absence, Bruce traveled the world seeking to regain his focus, and one hero in particular helped him, and they get a shout-out in Black Canary: Best of the Best #1.

Black Canary: Best of the Best #1 is written by Tom King and drawn by Ryan Sook. The issue is set against the backdrop of a once in a lifetime fighting match between Black Canary and Lady Shiva, to determine who is the best hand-to-hand combatant.

DC Just Gave Us the Most Realistic Superhero Fight Ever
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Black Canary: Best of the Best #1!I have a deeper appreciation for DC Comics' newest miniseries, thanks to my time as a sports commentator. There aren't many who divide time between reviewing comic books and working in education, let alone was a restling announcer and commentator. All of which gives me a unique appreciation for DC's newest 'battle for the title.'

My experience in calling action in the ring offers a different kind of perspective on Black Canary: Best of the Best #1, the first issue of Tom King and Ryan Sook's six-part miniseries which, for me, is a late contender for the best single comic book issue of the year. Among several other strength, I was utterly impressed with the authenticity of the dialogue written for the commentators of the central Lady Shiva vs. Black Canary fight.

Black Canary: Best Of The Best Interview: Tom King & Ryan Sook Discuss Their WWE-Inspired Comic (Exclusive)
Image
This interview was originally published on TheRingReport.com.

Black Canary is a comic book character who has earned a reputation as one of the most lethal hand-to-hand fighters in the DC Universe. Combined with her trademark Canary Cry, she's a force to be reckoned with and is widely considered one of DC's best hand-to-hand combatants.

This Wednesday, November 27, award-winning writer Tom King and artist Ryan Sook place Black Canary in the match of the millennium in the new six-issue series, Black Canary: Best of the Best.

In that, the superhero will go one-on-one with the villainous Lady Shiva to decide who is truly the, well, best of the best. There's much more to the story than that, of course, with the in-ring action - that's right, this is no normal superhero battle - juxtaposed with flashbacks chronicling the original Black Canary's story and Dinah being trained for this fight by her mother.

Batman villain [Spoiler] makes surprise appearance in The Penguin episode 4
Image
We're officially halfway through The Penguin, HBO's DC limited series which takes place one week after Matt Reeves' The Batman. I was definitely looking forward to watching this show, but it's blown my expectations out of the water. Not only is the storytelling great, but the performances from Colin Farrell as the titular character and Cristin Milioti as Sofia Falcone are fantastic. The Penguin is already one of my favorite shows of 2024 and I know I'm not alone in that opinion.

The fourth episode, titled "Cent’anni," picks up during the final events of last week's episode, "Bliss," showing us how Oz managed to escape the Maronis and leave Sofia all alone. We get to see the events through Sofia's eyes and that continues with flashbacks to a decade prior when her father was alive, showing us how she ended up in Arkham to begin with.

Warning: Spoilers for The Penguin episode 4 are below.

10 Best DC Comic Stories That Defined The 2000s
Image
First established as National Publications in the 1930s, DC Comics has accumulated an impressive history of comic book stories, thanks to characters like Batman and Superman. Every decade has brought its own unique style to the industry, and nowhere has that been as true as for DC. Where some decades were marked by grim and gritty tales, others were more experimental. When it comes to the 2000s, DC underwent a period of optimism, revivals, epic sagas and fan-favorite creative teams.

Where the 2000s were viewed by some as a slump for Marvel Comics, DC's books from the era have been looked back on almost unanimously as one of the publisher's best eras. Although the company had its share of misses and forgotten stories, few decades in comic history have been as memorable as DC's winning streak at the start of the 21st century. Many of these stories remain some of the company's best-sellers even today.

Black Canary: Best Of The Best Writer Tom King Talks WWE Inspiration And Why It'll Make You "F***ing Cheer"
Image
The DC Universe has plenty of badass hand-to-hand fighters, but later this year, Black Canary will set out to prove herself the best there is at what she does in a new six-issue limited series.

Titled Black Canary: Best of the Best, Dinah Laurel Lance will set out to prove she's no longer the DC Universe's second-best fighter when she goes head-to-head with Lady Shiva. To train for that fight, it's said the hero will receive training from the likes of Batman, Wildcat, and her mother, the first Black Canary.

Tom King and artist Ryan Sook (X-Factor) are tackling a comic which has all the makings of a great movie. Given his involvement in the Dcu - he's currently working on HBO's Lanterns - we can't discount the possibility that will eventually happen.

King's work has proven highly adaptable, with a Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie in the works at...

Joker Crowned This Criminally Underrated Gotham Villain "The Worst Person I Ever Met"
Image
Great White Shark, aka Warren White, is considered the worst person in Gotham by Joker and other villains. White's experiences in Arkham Asylum transformed him from a corrupt stock trader into a terrifying villain. The Great White Shark has ties to the supernatural, and made a demonic deal to torture Gotham's other villains in the afterlife.

While most fans of Batman would consider Joker his most despicable enemy, even the Clown Prince of Crime admits he's only in second place. To Joker, there's only one Arkham villain who is truly vile, and a worse person than all the freaks and killers who haunt Gotham's streets. Despite multiple Gotham villains from the A-list to the Z-list considering this person the worst person in Gotham, he's had precious few appearances, easily qualifying as the most underrated of Gotham's many evil-doers.

The villain in question is the Great White Shark, aka Warren White.

After all, the Man of Steel is considered to be one of the strongest beings in the DC Universe as well as one of the big guns of the Justice League. But when his abilities are officially categorized, it appears that Superman isn’t in a league of his own.

Future State: Legion of Super-Heroes #2 by Brian Michael Bendis, Riley Rossmo, and Ivan Plascencia finds the titular team on the brink of destruction, but what’s really interesting is data provided about the one and only Bouncing Boy at the start of the issue. Presented in Interlac, the alien text classifies Superman as having an “omega power level” – a possible expansion of the “mega-power” classification given to the hero Naomi in Justice League #63 by Bendis, David Marquez, and Ivan Plascencia.

"Planet Gotham": Batman's Ultimate Achievement Is the Perfect Ending to His Story
Image
While his Justice League allies Superman and Wonder Woman will live for centuries and potentially even millennia, Batman's appeal has always been that he's a mortal hero, and one day he will die. By raising a family of heroes, locking up deadly villains, and using his vast fortune to uplift Gotham, Bruce Wayne hopes to leave behind a heroic legacy - one he won't live to see, and will need others to carry on. Little does the Caped Crusader know the scale of what's coming.

In DC's Legion of Super-Heroes #1 - by Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook - fans get a close look at the 31st Century of the DC Universe. While time is always in flux, the series confirms this as DC's most stable future - the world that the heroes of the present will leave behind if they continue on their current paths. As Jon Kent's...

Batman Gets His Own Pokémon in Fanart DC Shouldn't Ignore
Image
It's no secret that Batman is at his best when he operates with a sidekick, and while his work with the various Robins has been successful, DC shouldn't ignore the fact that the Caped Crusader would be nearly unbeatable if his partner/sidekick was a Pokémon.

In a recent tweet, professor and comic book artist Mike Becker posted an awesome mash-up of Batman and Pokémon, where the Dark Knight's "boy wonder" is replaced by a menacing but slick-looking bat-like Pokémon.

Alt U Batman concept design pic.twitter.com/IME3mvM69V — Mike Bex (@mikejbecker) April 14, 2023

The image brings to mind just how suitable a Pokémon would be for Batman. Besides having all the skills and abilities that Batman always wanted in a sidekick, a Pokémon comes with an added benefit. Unlike a human, it is much harder to kill. Moreover, as a sidekick, a Pokémon can only reach its full potential through training,...

Flash's Barry Allen & Wally West Should Have Each Other's Rivals
Image
The two most iconic heroes to wear the Flash mantle, Wally West and Barry Allen, each have their own nemesis, but it would be more fitting it they were to switch villains. There are so many iconic villains in the DC Universe that contrast to their heroes: Joker and Batman, Lex Luthor and Superman, Wonder Woman and Cheetah. Rarely is it the case that a hero's iconic villain is actually better suited to another hero, but that's exactly the case with Reverse-Flash and Hunter Zolomon.

Barry Allen and the Reverse-Flash have had a horrifying rivalry throughout comic book history. While Barry has mostly just tried to be a hero and do what he can to save people, he attracted the attention of Eobard Thawne, who eventually became the Reverse-Flash and dedicated his life to ruining the life of Barry. This has made Reverse-Flash an incredibly dangerous villain that has time...

Nightwing Isn't the Definitive Robin, & One Fact Objectively Proves It
Image
Nightwing is often viewed as the definitive Robin and, by definition, Batman's most iconic sidekick, but further proof can dispute such an idea. Dick Grayson was introduced into the DC Universe as both the first Robin and Batman's first sidekick.

With Dick being the first Robin, it's understandable why so many people associate him most with his early days, but he's been so distanced from that role by now that it's hard to justify him as the definitive holder of the Robin mantle. Nowadays, readers are more likely to associate Dick with the name Nightwing than with Robin. Even as far as being Batman's sidekick, he's been long removed from that role as he's spent much of the past few decades going solo. Plus, prior to becoming Nightwing, Dick had already distanced himself from Batman for quite some time as a member of the Titans.

Joker's Psychic Virus Is Officially Deadlier Than Darkseid's Anti-Life
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for Dark Crisis: Worlds Without a Justice League - Batman #1!While Batman has been battling Joker for decades, it's rarely been suggested that the Clown Prince of Crime is truly as dangerous as Darkseid and his Anti-Life Equation. Joker has been a bane to almost every single hero he's ever come across. His rivalry with Batman has lasted over eighty years and the horrors Joker has visited on Batman and his allies are almost too numerous to count, from killing Jason Todd, to stealing all of Bruce Wayne's fortune, to shooting Batgirl and torturing her father. This isn't even mentioning the times Joker has gone up against Superman or any of the other heroes who protect Earth. However, while Joker is undeniably sadistic, one wouldn't think he's anywhere near a threat on the level of Darkseid or some other galactic-level villains.

In the current DCeased: War of...

Future State is the Next Evolution for DC’s Legion of Super-Heroes
Brian Michael Bendis
This article contains spoilers for Future State: Legion of Super-Heroes #1

Never let it be said that Brian Michael Bendis doesn’t know how to keep busy. The prolific writer has had his hands full since coming to DC in 2018. Arriving with much fanfare on both Superman and Action Comics, Bendis also relaunched Young Justice, co-created a new DC mainstay in Naomi, wrote the excellent Batman: Universe, shepherded the Event Leviathan mini, and more. All of these books introduced new characters, re-tooled existing ones (such as aging up young Jonathan Kent to his mid-teens), and set various wheels in motion throughout the DC Universe.

And in the midst of that he also rebooted the team with the largest roster in all of comics, the one that brings with it the most complex web of continuity, the one that requires the most amount of worldbuilding by virtue of its 31st century setting.

Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher in Justice League (2017)
What Does Future State Mean for the DC Universe?
Ben Affleck, Jeremy Irons, Amy Adams, Henry Cavill, Jason Momoa, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher in Justice League (2017)
It’s somehow almost 2021, which means the DC Universe is about to enter its Future State, the big two month crossover that kicks off the new year by pausing its regular line, and diving deep into the wild, varied timelines and parallel universes for new angles from fresh creators. And we are happy to have your exclusive first look at the February covers and solicitations for the Justice League family of books.

Since half the fun of solicits is trying to piece together what’s happening in the book from the 50 words and a cover, we decided to engage in some wild, semi-informed speculation on what might be coming from DC’s event.

Let’s get right to it: Future State has a very strong Seven Soldiers of Victory vibe.

The original Seven Soldiers were briefly a superteam from the ’40s, brought back sporadically whenever a comic needed a nostalgia boost,...

What to Expect From DC's New Legion of Super-Heroes
Mike Cecchini Sep 30, 2019

Don't call it a reboot. Brian Michael Bendis tells us all about the new version of the Legion of Super-Heroes in the DC Universe.

The Legion of Super-Heroes have been absent from the DC Universe for far too long. The team of youthful heroes from a variety of worlds around the galaxy has long been an essential piece of DC and Superman mythology, but every now and then, they need a fresh start. After all, as our present changes, so must the future. And DC's Legion of Super-Heroes is in the process of a high profile fresh start courtesy of Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook. With a story that began in the main Superman title and continues through the "future history of the DC Universe" limited series Legion of Super-Heroes: Millennium, and finally in a brand new Legion of Super-Heroes ongoing series in November, DC...

Superboy Joins the Legion of Super-Heroes
Jim Dandy Jul 9, 2019

It's official! Superboy will be part of the DC Legion of Super-Heroes reboot.

The return of DC's best super-team is going to feature even more of the best heroes when Legion of Super-Heroes: Millenium #1 hits in October. Also Superman and Lois's son from the present is being shot into the future to join the Legion after being aged to his teen years via time dilation.

"Jon Kent is joining the Legion" is probably a little more sexy than "Look at this dope Element Lad redesign" but that's the beauty of this Ryan Sook-drawn cover to issue 2 of Legion of Super-Heroes: Millenium. It's a great storytelling image that has so much going on in the background, I could stare at it for hours trying to pick out all the different parts of it. Element Lad is Jan Arrah, the last survivor of the planet Trom with...

DC Legion of Superheroes Reboot Details Revealed
Jim Dandy Jun 13, 2019

The Legion of Superheroes finally returns to the DC Universe this September!

After nearly five years away from comics with only a scant cameo to show for it, the Legion of Superheroes, the best superteam in the entire DC Comics stable, is finally returning.

In September, a two issue introductory series that will serve as a guide through all of DC's various future timelines begins. Legion of Superheroes: Millennium will be written by Brian Michael Bendis with art from an absurd lineup of creators. The story begins with a newly immortal character who learns to deal with her longevity through the course of the 1000 years leading up to the formation of the Legion.

Here's the official synopsis, courtesy of DC Comics:

The series focuses on a most unlikely tour guide to the 31st century, a familiar face to DC fans who finds herself suddenly immortal. As...

‘Superman: Action Comics Vol.1 – Invisible Mafia’ Review
Written by Brian Michael Bendis | Art by Ryan Sook, Patrick Gleason, Yanick Paquette, Wade Von Grawbadger | Published by DC Comics | Format: Hardcover, 160pp

The devastating repercussions from the Man of Steel graphic novel still reverberate as Metropolis enters a new age as The Daily Planet teeters on the brink of disaster; and a new criminal element has made its way onto the streets of Superman’s hometown.

Superman: Action Comics Vol.1 – Invisible Mafia is the first volume in the new Brian Michael Bendis era of Action Comics, having taken over the title following his debut with the Man of Steel mini-series. As he did with the Marvel Universe, Bendis’ role at DC was clear – revitalise Superman and make him relevant in the pages Action Comics in much the same way he did the Avengers.

That revitalisation of Marvel, in particular with New Avengers, is actually what got me back into comics as a whole.
