Every Major Shirley Jackson Movie And TV Show, Ranked
Image
Author Shirley Jackson was a unique trailblazer in American fiction, crafting horror stories that weave supernatural elements with stories about grief, trauma, and mental illness. Over her lifetime she published six novels and more than 200 short stories, along with two memoirs, but surprisingly there have been only five film and television adaptations of her work. Plenty of others have been inspired by Jackson, of course, but only four films and one TV series actually seek to adapt her work in some way, to varying degrees of success.

There's something to appreciate in each of these works because the source material is so rich, but some Shirley Jackson adaptations are far better than others. So, let's take a look at them from worst to best, starting with the earliest adaptation: the 1957 Hugo Haas noir film "Lizzie."

'The Conjuring' and 'The Nun's Farmiga Sisters Could Not Have Their Characters Meet on Screen for Legal Reasons
Image
As The Conjuring franchise comes to an end with the upcoming sequel,The Conjuring: Last Rites, horror fans still have many questions about the arc that will serve as the conclusion of the Warrens' demon-busting journey. However, if you thought that Vera and Taissa Farmiga's characters would finally appear together on-screen, we got bad news. Vera's Lorraine Warren and Taissa's Sister Irene are not set to meet on Last Rites, and there's a very good reason for this.

Director Michael Chaves spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the sisters in real life having their character arcs converge in the upcoming movie, and while it was thought to be a possibility at some point, it is just not happening. Apparently, it is due to some legal issues related to the "true" stories that back The Conjuring's plots:

"I was really craving more of a connection, to be totally honest, between The Nun and the Warrens.

‘The Gilded Age’ Teases Marriage and Upheaval in Season 3
Image
HBO is promising more high-society unrest in season three of The Gilded Age.

The network has set a June 22 premiere date released a first teaser for the drama’s forthcoming season. The teaser shows Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) sticking to her “too much is never enough” ethos and preparing to marry off her daughter, Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) — a prospect which, judging by Farmiga’s expression in a few shots in the minute-long clip, doesn’t excite Gladys very much.

Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), meanwhile, expresses an opposite view: “Some people want to marry for love. I know I do,” she says — to which her aunt Agnes (Christine Baranski) replies, “I don’t understand.” Watch the teaser below.

The season logline for season three of The Gilded Age reads, “Following the Opera War, the old guard is weakened and the Russells stand poised to take their place at the head of society.

Why ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3 won’t be eligible for any Emmys this year
Image
After an 18-month break, get ready to give a warm welcome back to Bertha, Marian, Agnes, Ada, and the rest of The Gilded Age gang. Season 3 will premiere the first of eight episodes in June, HBO announced today, six months after Season 2 wrapped on Dec. 17, 2023. Instead, Gilded Age Season 3 will compete at the 2026 Emmy Awards.

Everything We Know About ‘American Horror Story’ Season 13 & What We Want to See in the “Final” Season
Image
There’s at least one more season of American Horror Story on the horizon and details about the upcoming Season 13 are starting to come in.

It’s difficult for any television series to sustain itself for a dozen seasons, but American Horror Story has experienced a particularly fascinating trajectory that’s often more chaotic than it is creative. Regardless of one’s opinion on American Horror Story – its current state or the series in general – there’s no denying that it ushered in a new wave of anthology storytelling that’s still popular a decade later. There’s been an increasingly blasé approach to American Horror Story seasons that it’s sometimes easy to forget about the tremendous pomp and circumstance that surrounded the early seasons and how each year’s theme would be teased and revealed like a major event. American Horror Story’s production and promotion has become more perfunctory,...

The Warrens May Be Gone, But The Conjuring Franchise Is Just Entering “Phase Two”
Image
The Conjuring: Last Riteswill bring the story of the Warrens on the big screen to a close, but that doesn't mean that the Conjuring franchise is coming to an end. The head of New Line, Richard Brener, was eager to discuss the future of the series in a recent interview. This year's sequel will mark the end of an era for the horror blockbuster hit. But Warner Bros. and New Line are aware that a continuous investment in the series could create profits for both parties for years to come. Here's what Richard Brener had to say regarding what fans can expect out of The Conjuring after the release of Last Rites:

It’s testing through the roof and we’re only at the director’s cut, the 10-week part of the movie where you’re normally very, very scared about the status of your film. We’re very early in the process,...

Even though we now have an entire franchise based around the legendary hitman John Wick, otherwise known as Baba Yaga, we cannot forget about the first time he graced our big screens. The first in the series premiered over 10 years ago and, at most, had a 30 million dollar budget. The movie informs us about his dead wife, Helen, right away through flashbacks as well as through John’s own grief. She knew that he would end up feeling alone, though, and arranged for him to receive a beagle puppy. The bond between a man and his dog (no matter how healing and heartwarming) did not last very long, unfortunately.

The 35 Highest-Grossing Movie Franchises Of All Time
Image
2024 guaranteed the promising future of successful franchises such as Deadpool and Planet of the Apes but also might have sealed the fate of other franchises, such as in the case of Madame Web's box office flop and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga's disappointing opening weekend. While some may complain there are too many sequels and reboots in theaters, the reality is that film franchises will exist as long as they’re successful.

Movie studios produce entertainment, but ultimately, their goal is to make money. If a film is financially prosperous, chances are a second and third will succeed, too. If audiences embrace certain movies and characters, giving them more of what they want makes sense. This approach has undoubtedly resulted in some dreadful sequels but has also birthed some excellent and beloved film series. After all, the highest-grossing franchises of all time didn’t get to the top by being mediocre.

10 Excellent Thriller Books You Can Read In A Day
Image
By incorporating mystery, intrigue, and unreliable narrators, thriller books have been capturing audiences' attention for many years. Plenty of the best movies and TV shows within the genre have drawn inspiration from novels, especially those that are easy to read in a single sitting. Sometimes, picking up a book that features a long plot with heavy world-building can be too much. It can be better to read something that can be finished quickly, reaching an exciting conclusion without delay. This doesn't make these novels any less interesting or complex, as there's still plenty of opportunity for misdirects within their pages.

Plenty of thriller books have wild endings, revealing the killer or the unexpected twist that throws the rest of the story into sharp relief in the final moments of the story. While thrillers don't necessarily have to follow the events of a murder mystery, this is often the premise as...

The Gilded Age and The Boys spinoff Gen V add cast members ahead of new seasons
Image
You might think that The Gilded Age, HBO's mannered period drama about feather-light conflict between members of the upper crust in 1880s New York City, doesn't have anything in common with Gen V, a spinoff of The Boys where college students get their heads lasered off by sociopathic superheroes. And you'd be right...except for one thing: both of them are greatly expanding their casts ahead of their new seasons: that's season 3 for The Gilded Age and season 2 for Gen V.

Let's start with The Gilded Age, which counts the likes of Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denee Benton, Taissa Farmiga, and Harry Richardson among its cast. Deadline reports on six new cast members coming aboard for season 3, some of them playing real-life figures from the time:

Dylan Baker (The Good Wife) is Dr. Logan, who treats super-fancy high society familiesKate Baldwin is Nancy Adams Bell, the older sister...

‘The Gilded Age’ Season 3 Adds Dylan Baker & 5 More to Cast: Everything We Know So Far
Dylan Baker
The Gilded Age Season 3 is currently in production in New York. Fans got their first glimpse of Season 3 footage in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it clip in an HBO teaser dropped on August 4, showing Bertha (Carrie Coon) and Marian (Louisa Jacobson) and more in the new episodes. And the series has slowly been announcing more new cast members as production presses on. Recent casting updates reveal that the women’s suffrage movement and Bertha’s family history will both be topics this season, and more historical figures are going to be depicted. One character description also hints that there will be scenes set in England for the very first time. Could that be because Gladys (Taissa Farmiga) marries the English Duke of Buckingham after all? The Good Wife‘s Dylan Baker, Broadway’s Kate Baldwin, Michael Cumpsty of Severance, John Ellison Conlee from Boardwalk Empire, Bobby Steggert from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,...

Season 8 of American Horror Story, Apocalypse, confirmed theres a connection between many (if not all) of the shows seasons, but there are other subtle parallels between some seasons and characters.

Ryan Murphy Wants Original Cast Back for American Horror Story Season 13
Image
Ryan Murphy has been taking some much-needed time off from his American Horror Story anthology series that started back in 2011 and continues to run today. The hit series began with a bang in the first season, AHS: Murder House, starring long-time AHS actors Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Dennis O'Hare, and Jessica Lange. Peters' and Farmiga's love story helped sky-rocket the mature-themed show into popularity with fans old and young. The initial hype for the series did not slow down as actors like Emma Roberts and Sarah Paulson joined the recurring cast. Now, after twelve seasons of new characters and eerie settings, the Glee creator has revealed that he wants to take the series back to its roots.

Writer, director, and producer Murphy took some time off from the viral series to focus on his new FX show Grotesquerie. With the series now airing, the TV powerhouse has stated that he's...

Ryan Murphy Considering Bringing Og ‘American Horror Story’ Cast Back for Season 13
Image
Ryan Murphy certainly has his executive-producer hands full — his shows Monsters, 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, American Horror Stories, American Sports Story, Doctor Odyssey, and Grotesquerie have all launched new seasons in recent weeks. But where’s the next American Horror Story season? Fall 2024 is only the second AHS-less fall since the FX show’s 2011 premiere. Season 12, dubbed Delicate, ended in April, and there’s no airdate for a 13th season. Scream not, horror fans. Murphy and FX chairman John Landgraf assure fans that Season 13 is coming, and it might involve a big cast reunion. Murphy tells Variety he hasn’t “really landed” on the Season 13 idea yet, though there’s “a couple things in contention.” And, he says, he often thinks of “the original gangster cast,” i.e. Season 1 stars Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O’Hare, and Jessica Lange. American Horror Story's Highest-Rated Season Shows Why Season 13 Must End The Show
Image
American Horror Story popularized the horror anthology genre, but 13 seasons after the show debuted, it's time to call it a day. When AHS first aired in 2011, the show delivered an outstanding, compelling series, with incredible actors that just worked. However, when the show delivered a second season, with some of those same actors returning, and a brand new exciting premise which delivered that same horror and anticipation to an even greater extent, it broke the standard format.

Of course, there were anthology shows before AHS, but its influence in popularizing this kind of storytelling and variety is undeniable. All of that said, the show appears to have it's peak early in the runtime, and now it's struggling to recapture the magic in the latest seasons. Since the show is already renewed for a 13th season, perhaps that should be where they call it a day, and lay the show to rest.

10 Gross American Horror Story Scenes That Will Stick With Us Forever
Image
This article discusses extreme violence.

American Horror Story has never been afraid of pushing boundaries, and each season has featured some of the most shocking and disgusting moments on television. The latest season, titled American Horror Story: Delicate, alone contains the series' signature blend of horror and drama that represents themes of modern fears in gross ways that include but are not limited to mutilation, vomiting, and bloody murder. All seasons of American Horror Story have done a great job of creating moments full of shocking visuals that create tension and make some scenes even more disturbing.

The anthology show includes problematic character relations that can reveal horrifying lengths individuals will go to for specific situations, body horrors that can be almost too unreal when the series wants to take a more supernatural turn, and realistic gore that focuses on atmosphere and storytelling to conjure up tension. The results are...

Why We Have Always Lived In The Castle Would Make A Better Miniseries
Image
The 1962 mystery novel We Have Always Lived In The Castle was adapted into a movie in 2018, but the story would make a better miniseries. The book was written by American author Shirley Jackson, who's most known for her controversial short story "The Lottery" and horror novel The Haunting of Hill House, which was adapted by Mike Flanagan for Netflix. We Have Always Lived In The Castle is told through the point of view of Mary Katherine Blackwood, or Merricat, an 18-year-old girl who lives with Constance, her older sister, and Julian, her ill uncle, on the Blackwood estate.

Six years before We Have Always Lived In The Castle starts, a horrible tragedy killed the trio's family, leaving them to live alone in the house and isolated from the rest of the world. It's revealed that Merricat and Constance's parents and brother along with Julian's wife were victims in a mass murder.

Alexandra Daddarios 5-Year-Old Horror Movie On Streaming Is A Must-Watch Before Mayfair Witches Season 2
Image
Alexandra Daddario's starring role in Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches may be her most high-profile horror role, but this five-year-old movie might be her best swing at the genre. Daddario plays Rowan Fielding in the series, a neuroscientist who discovers her connection to a long line of witches. While the AMC series has received a mixed reception from critics, Mayfair Witches does a good job fleshing out the network's adaptation of Anne Rice's Immortal Universe. This is in part to Daddario, whose performance is a stand-out aspect of the show.

Alexandra Daddario is no stranger to the horror genre, with the actor appearing in everything from slasher flicks and demonic thrillers to scary comedies and gothic dramas. It's the latter that stands out as arguably Daddario's best work in the genre, making it an ideal watch for fans waiting for Mayfair Witches season 2. Her 2019 horror film almost works as...

The Bling Ring Review: Sofia Coppolas Satire Of Fame-Obsessed Teens Remains A Relevant Time Capsule
Image
The Bling Ring captures the superficial materialism and celebrity culture of the 2010s. Sofia Coppola uses sharp satire to explore the allure of fame and hollow material desires. Emma Watson's performance as Nicki Moore adds layers to a cast of mostly one-dimensional characters.

Looking back on Sofia Coppolas satirical crime film The Bling Ring more than ten years later reveals how much the world of celebrity has changed. While young peoples need for external validation means this story of fame-obsessed teenagers robbing celebrities' houses will always be relevant, it also points to a bygone era of consumerism and tabloid culture where Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan were practically Hollywood royalty. With the power of hindsight, The Bling Ring is a unique time capsule of the 2010s that unfortunately fails to explore its subject with the level of depth needed to be truly compelling.

‘The Gilded Age’ Costumes: A Display of Wealth, Power and Sophistication
Image
“The opera is where society puts itself on display,” says Carrie Coon’s character Bertha Russell in “The Gilded Age.” She is correct, but in HBO’s period drama set in late 19th century New York City, society is always on display and nearly every scene is a showcase for the luxe sartorial indulgences of the elite.

Created by “Downton Abbey” mastermind Julian Fellowes, “The Gilded Age” is a soapy saga in which old money begrudgingly rubs elbows with the nouveau riche. The 1880s were a period of rapid industrialization, political corruption and an ever-widening gap between the wealthy and the poor. And from the series’ very first episode, costume designer Kasia Walicka-Maimone wanted to capture the spirit of excitement that defined the era. “There were those giant socio-economic differences that were visible daily on the street,” she said. “The ladies of means, the ladies who had money, it was their town,...
