★★☆☆☆ American actor Paul Walker has carved out a career that largely consists of driving cars and being both fast and furious. Playing firmly within type, Walker returns to screens this week in Mukunda Michael Dewil's Vehicle 19 (2013). Alongside an international cast including Naima McLean and Gys De Villiers, Walker plays Michael Woods, a reckless ex-con determined to change his life for the better in an attempt to save his relationship with an estranged girlfriend. Unfortunately, a mix-up at a Johannesburg car rental company leaves Michael stuck with the wrong car and distressed hostage Rachel (McLean) in the boot.
Michael quickly becomes embroiled in a hot pursuit when he is chased across Johannesburg by a dangerous, corrupt and powerful Detective Smith (De Villers). Unable to go to the police and having already broken parole, Michael not only has the hostage's life to save, but he must also save his own...

Star Trek Into Darkness | Mud | A Hijacking | The Reluctant Fundamentalist | Our Children | Deadfall | Vehicle 19 | Village At The End Of The World | Journey To Italy
Star Trek Into Darkness (12A)
(Jj Abrams, 2013, Us) Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg. 132 mins
Those cinemagoers won over by Abrams's first Star Trek movie (even if they can barely remember it now) won't be disappointed with this finely tuned follow-up, which deftly balances action crises, sci-fi repartee and the ongoing Kirk/Spock bromance, but adds enough surprises to keep things interesting, largely by way of Cumberbatch's shifty supervillain.
Mud (12A)
(Jeff Nichols, 2012, Us) Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Reese Witherspoon. 130 mins
Another distinctive, beguiling southern parable from Nichols, this time tracking the friendship between two boys and the mysterious fugitive they find down by the river. It's like a mix of Stand By Me, Night Of The Hunter and Terrence Malick.

I know what you’re thinking: “Oh great, another movie in which Paul Walker drives fast in a car!” But wait, whilst Vehicle 19 does see everyone’s second-favourite Fast & Furious franchise star get behind the wheel of a car, this film is a whole different kettle of fish for Mr. Walker… Yet another in the line of “one man, one location” movies that have followed the successful release of Buried, the film takes it’s tale on to the roads of Johannesburg as Walker finds himself in the middle of mystery, knowing exactly as much as the audience does – that he’s definitely in the wrong rental car!

"You know what's more powerful than a mean bastard with too much power? A man with nothing to lose." Ketchup Entertainment has debuted the official Us trailer for Mukunda Michael Dewil's Vehicle 19, the thriller about a guy who gets into the wrong rental car. We already featured a trailer for this in January, and while it doesn't look amazing, it looks quite action-packed and thrilling to watch. Paul Walker stars as the unlucky driver who lands in South Africa looking for a girl and ends up choosing the wrong car, picking up Naima McLean along the way. This new trailer gets intense by the end, but really makes me want to see it. Mukunda Michael Dewil’s Vehicle 19 is an action-thriller based in South Africa that takes place entirely within the confines of a vehicle. It is the third project of that ilk – using the one-location setup – from producer Peter Safran, who also backed the 2010 Sundance breakout Buried (read our review) and the largely-ignored Atm.
The story involves Paul Walker as a recently-paroled American inadvertently given the wrong rental car, housing a mysterious woman named Rachel (Naima McLean) with key evidence for a trial concerning police corruption. That means Walker not only have to navigate a place he’s unfamiliar with, but do so while avoiding a fleet of crooked cops (and their cars) in order to deliver Rachel to the prosecution.
You get all that from the above trailer, but there’s little to no indication of the film’s conceit (ie. a ...

Car rental companies, eh? If they’re not trying to charge you for unnecessary extras, fobbing you off with a wonky Gps or landing you with a lemon, they’re giving you the wrong car, one tied to a massive criminal conspiracy. All right, so perhaps not so much with that last one usually. But that’s the situation Paul Walker finds himself in in the trailer for Vehicle 19.Walker plays a man who arrives in South Africa after being paroled, intent on working things out with his ex-wife. When he realises he’s been given a minivan instead of the sedan he reserved, he decides to just go with it. But then a mobile phone stashed in the vehicle sends him a text. And he finds a gun. And a young woman tied up behind the back seats…Turns out our hero has unknowingly stumbled into a plot...

“Vehicle 19″ is one of those “contained thrillers” — that is, its big gimmick is that we, the audience, only knows/sees what the main character knows/sees at any given time during the film. You know the drill — Ryan Reynolds in a coffin, Stephen Dorff in the trunk of a car, and now, Paul Walker behind the wheel of a rental vehicle. It’s apparently set inside and around the car (though it seems to take some liberties in this regard) following Walker’s character as he tries to get himself out of a major jam involving guys with guns and a girl stuffed into his back seat. Good luck there, fella. Here’s the first trailer for “Vehicle 19″, from writer/director Mukunda Michael Dewil. A foreign traveler (Walker) unknowingly picks up a rental car that will tie him to a web of corrupt local police. The film also stars Naima McLean,...
